Itcontains a lock of the hair of herancestress the Lady Mary Tudor,dau’t of King Henry VII, who mar’d1stly Louis XII, King of France and2dly Charles Brandon, Duke ofSuffolk. Her descen’t by the lattermarriage the Lady FrancesBrandon, dau’t of Charles Brandon,6th Duke of Suffolk became thewife of John Manners, Marquess ofGranby, eld’t son of John 3rd Dukeof Rutland. Mary Tudor died on 25June 1533 and was bur’d 22ndJuly at the monastery of StEdmondsbury. On the dissolutionof that house, her coffin wasremoved to the Parish Church. On6th Sept 1784 her tomb and itsleaden coffin were opened. Herhair, nearly 2 feet long, was foundin perfect condition, & this lockwas then cut off. The inscriptioninside the ring is a copy of that onthe coffin. Another lock, enclos’d ina locket was exhib’d at the TudorExhibition, New Gallery, London,1890. Francis Pierrepont Barnard, the author of theinscription, was an archaeologist, historian andnumismatist and how the ring came to be in hispossession is not known. However, the currentowner of the ring confirms it was passed downfrom his grandmother, Lady Elizabeth MontaguDouglas Scott, youngest daughter of the 7th Dukeof Rutland who had inherited it from her unmarriedsister, Lady Katherine Manners.

Barnard cites the Tudor Exhibition of 1890, held atthe New Gallery, London where another lock ofMary Tudor’s hair was displayed. This lock, number899 in the catalogue, is listed under “relics” andthe catalogue entry describes how in September1784 Mary Tudor’s tomb, in the Church of Bury StEdmond’s, was opened and “an act of sacrilegiousspoliation was committed”. The lead coffin,inscribed “Mary Quene of Ffraunc, 1533” wasopened and portions of Mary’s hair, purported tobe two feet in length and in perfect condition, wereghoulishly cut off by those present at thedisinterment, thus entering various 18th centurycollections, including that of Charles Blomfield,Alderman of Bury. A lock of hair was alsopresented to the Dowager Duchess of Portlandfrom whom it passed to the Marquess of Chandosand then sold with the Duke of Buckingham’seffects in 1848 to a Mr Owen of New Bond Street.
