Dear Home Watch Coordinator,

As a recipient of this newsletter you have taken an important and praiseworthy step to being an active citizen in reducing crime and anti-social behaviour on our streets. As the lead for Neighbourhood Policing in Bolton, I just wanted to say a formal thank you for that. In its basic context, the role of home watch has been with us since the dawn of human history. Looking out for our friends and neighbours is a core human instinct. You have merely taken that a stage further by receiving and giving information that helps us keep your patch safe.

We are in the midst of a recruitment drive for home watch coordinators. We want to galvanise the community behind crime fighting efforts and do our very best to attract a wide variety of people, with many different backgrounds, to where we need help the most. If you know anyone who wants to be involved please let your local officers know. Our aim is to create a ‘Bolton Wide Web’ of people who want to be involved in as much or as little capacity as they are able – the key part of this is to be involved. We have demonstrated as a country this year with the Olympics that volunteering can be fun and enriching. We need to apply that skill, energy and talent to the social challenges in and around where we live and work. As the police, we are an extension to your neighbourhood, we don’t sit outside of it, and we want to do as much as we can to support the good people of Bolton in looking after themselves and their property.

I look forward to working with you.

Superintendent Phil DaviesMSc., BA (Hons), CMgr, MCMI

Bolton Central are working hard to reduce theft offences in the town

centre over Christmas to ensure that we can all enjoy the festivities.

We recently had a spate of vehicle crime in Rumworth and officers

were placed on nights, this has proved successful with reductions

across the area.

With the darker nights we are advising home owners and commercial

premises to keep a light on at night to deter burglars.

As winter is now upon us we all need to be aware of the opportunist

thieves who steal your car whilst you are defrosting it. We need to get

this message out and not give out early Christmas presents.

Christmas is now near and I would also like to take this opportunity to

thanks you all for your help throughout the year.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Rumworth

There has been 1breported robbery, where two offenders approached a man having a cigarette on the doorstep of his home address. They demanded money but he told them to get lost, at which they caused damage to vehicle parked along the street.

There has been 1 reported burglary where entry has been gained by breaking the window.

There have been 2 reports of theft from secure vehicles during the hours of darkness. Both vehicles had items stolen that had been left inside.

There has been one reported theft of a motor vehicle whereby the offender was seen to stand by the vehicle for a few minutes, apparently talking on a mobile ‘phone. The vehicle was then driven off and found the following day.

Never leave items in view in parked vehicles. This makes it easy for thieves to target vehicles.

Town Centre

There has been 4 burglaries reported in relation to business premises.

There have been 3 reports of theft from persons. On 1 occasion the offender approached a person who had just taken money from a cash machine. They attempted to sell an item and were persistent in their method. During this time they snatched the money from the hand of the person who had just removed it from the atm. The remaining 1 relate to mobile phones being taken from bags.

There have been 4 theft from vehicle offences reported, all from secure vehicles. 3 relate to the removal of catalytic converters. All occurred during the day.

Never leave valuable items in loose pockets or in your back pocket. This makes it easy for pick pockets to remove items from these without you feeling it.

Halliwell

There have been no reports of burglaries to report this past fortnight.

There have however been 5 theft from motor vehicles. 1 was due to an insecurity on a forecourt whilst the owner was paying at the kiosk, a second was an attempt to take a catalytic converter from underneath the vehicle, a third relates to items being removed overnight from the back of a tipper truck and the remaining 2 were secure vehicles.

There has been one report of theft from a person, whilst they were at a petrol forecourt, their wallet was snatched from their hand.

Please advise residents in this area especially on Deane Rd and Willows lane to be more vigilant with their home and vehicle security.

Hopefully, the message regarding lighting plans for your homes, as the darker nights creep in, has been filtered out into the community. But recently we have been encouraging business premises to think about lighting plans also. A light left on might make a burglar stop and think that somebody may be in the building and could also assist with any capture on CCTV.

Another seasonal issue is theft of motor vehicle at this time of the year. We call them 'Ice bandits' - offenders will target vehicles left outside houses with the engine running while the owner returns to the house for some hot water, or a last slurp of tea! There is always an increase when the temperature goes below 0' so please spread the word 'don't be the next victim!'

Shoplifting is on the increase with meat and coffee very popular items for the thieves. We believe that these are being sold by the offenders who are door to door knocking and asking residents if they want some cheap goods. I think the vast majority of people will believe that these goods are stolen and refuse to buy them. However, we would be pleased to receive information on this. Again, please spread the word -report to police straight away, preferably with a description and direction of travel.

Thanks,
