History

Eaton’s Pringle Switches have helped pioneer the devel-opment of high-quality electricalproducts for commercial andindustrial applications since1891. Eaton’s Pringle BoltedContact Switch was the first in the industry and is a standard in high-current switching applications. They are custom-built, are used inmany heavy-duty applications, and are suitable for use in ULT 891 switchboards.

1Why Our BoltedPressure ContactSwitch Works Better

• Conducts high current with greater efficiency than knife spring or butt contact devices.

• The bolted contact switchopens and closes easily.

• The operating mechanismcloses the switch bladesquickly and actuates a bolting mechanism thatapplies pressure to both thehinge and jaw contacts. Thisprovides current conductingefficiency equivalent to thatof a bolted bus bar.

• The entire switch boltingmechanism is non-magneticto ensure that inductiveheating can not occur in any of the switch components. This ensureslong-term switch reliability.

Charge-Before-Close(CBC) Electrical Trip

The CBC switch features the Pringle bolted pressure principle and can be manuallyor electrically tripped. Theswitch features a Quick-ActingStored Energy Mechanism. The spring is compressed bythe operating handle andreleased near the end of thestroke to provide quick, positiveswitching action independent of the speed with which thehandle is operated. A storedenergy latch mechanism andsolenoid trip release providessimple and economical electrical opening.

The CBC is operated by rotating the handle counter-clockwise to charge. Theswitch can be closed only afterthe opening spring has beencharged. After closing, theswitch can be tripped manuallyby a mechanical pushbutton or electrically by remotely sending a signal to the solenoid. During trip, there is no handle movement.

Quick Acting (QA)Manually OperatedThe QA switch features the Pringle bolted pressure principle with a quick-actingoperating mechanism. Theswitch operation is achieved via manual operation. Thespring is compressed by theoperating handle and releasednear the end of the stroke toprovide quick, positive switch-ing action independent of thespeed with which the handle is operated. The QA switchmechanism prevents teasing of the contacts.

Features and Accessories

• NEMAT standard terminal drilling.

• Provision for padlocking inOPEN position.

• 2-pole switches are same as3-pole, except right-handpole is omitted.

• Can be supplied in NEMA 1or 3R enclosures.

• Can be top or bottom feed.

Performance Standards

• 800 – 4000 A switches (UL 977).

TemperatureAll CBC and QA switches willcarry 100% of rated currentwithout exceeding 60°C rise at terminals. The maximumallowed ambient, when operat-ing at 100% rated load, is 40ºC.

No-Load Endurance• 800 A switches: 3500

no-load operations.• 1200 A switches: 2500

no-load operations.• 1600 – 2500 A switches:

2000 no-load operations.• 3000 and 4000 A switches:

1000 no-load operations.

Load Make-and-Break Ability• 800 – 4000 A switches:

3 load make operations at1200% of rating.

• 800 – 4000 A switches: 3 load break operations at600% of rating.

Load Make-and-Break Abilityat 200% of Rating• 800 – 1200 A switches:

100 operations.• 1600 – 2400 A switches:

50 operations.

Ratings/Withstand AbilityQA and CBC are 100% ratedusing Class L fuses. They arecapable of 12X Break and 6X Make and withstand andclose into currents having available currents of 200,000rms symmetrical amperes, atrated voltage.

The Class L fuses can clearfaults in one-half cycle or less, and the clearing time does not change with age/or load conditions. There is no calibration required — when a blown fuse is replaced with a new one, original circuit protection is restored.

Trip Solenoid (CBC Only)Solenoid is capable of trippingat 55% of rated voltage.

1Spring Mechanism The unique spring design is created by a series of concave-convex washers. The paired-washer springdesign provides a higherforce/distance ratio, making it easier to operate the mechanism. Should any pair of washerbecome inoperable for any reason, the entire springassembly will still be operableby means of the remainingpairs. This is unlike the situationif a coil spring were to fractureor fatigue.
