Welcome to Bolingbrook, a wonderful place to live, work, and play! As you travel Bolingbrook’s main thorough-fares, you will see lush landscaping, playful sculptures,

and sparkling fountains. Venture into our neighborhoods and you will find tree-lined boulevards, manicured parks, and well-groomed homes. Attractive industrial and commercial buildings help define our borders, and upscale retail developments bracket the town.

Our location at the juncture of several interstate highways makes us a major hub for travel and transportation and provides conve-nient access to all the attractions of nearby Chicago and beyond.

Explore a little further and you will meet our residents. Bolingbrook’s earliest residents were pioneers who no doubt understood the value of “location, loca-tion, location” when they chose to put down roots within the Indian Boundary, a 20-mile corridor of land defined by the 1795 Treaty of Greenville as a “safe passage” for settlers to travel from Fort

Dearborn (later to become Chicago) to the Illinois River.Here in the 21st century, Bolingbrook continues to benefit from its strategic location. Situated just 35

miles southwest of Chicago, at the crossroads of Illinois Route 53 and both I-355 and I-55, and with easy access to I-80, Bolingbrook’s ideal location has been critical to its growth.

At the time of its incorporation in 1965, Bolingbrook was little more than a “bedroom community” for Chicago. However, that proximity led to the construction of the many distribution centers that have turned this stretch of highway into a “distribution corridor.” The ease of distribution has helped bring many other businesses to Bolingbrook. As new companies have moved here, their employees followed, opening the market up for a host of other businesses and services.

In recent years, Bolingbrook’s prime location has also been instrumental in bringing us such retail outlets as IKEA, Bass Pro, and The Promenade Bolingbrook, as well as our long-awaited hospital. Add this to the many other advantages that set this community apart, and Bolingbrook has become a destina-tion in itself.

in providing “visitability” to those with disabilities. This term means that a person in a wheelchair visiting one of our new homes can have full access to the dwelling’s first floor. In Bolingbrook, this translates into no-step entries, raised outlets, lowered light switches, and doorway openings that are 32 inches wide to accommodate the

use of wheelchairs, crutches, and walkers. This also includes bathroom walls that are reinforced so that grab bars can be

installed and bathrooms themselves that are spacious enough to allow the door to be fully closed with

a wheelchair inside.

The adoption of this policy was spearheaded by Bolingbrook resident Edward Bannister, a former president of the Coalition of Citizens with Disabilities of Illinois, working with the full support of the Village administration. In Bolingbrook, there are no barriers to the American Dream for those with physical limitations.

Maintaining the American DreamBecause Bolingbrook takes pride in its community, we have an

active code enforcement division as part of our police department. The men and women who issue building permits and patrol our streets are dedicated to the safety and well-being of our residents. Their job is to ensure that the townspeople in Bolingbrook live in housing that is adequately built and properly maintained, which enhances the appearance of our neighborhoods and the property values of our residences.

Whether it’s new innovation or expansion, Bolingbrook’s economy continues to grow. Entrepreneurs have found a community where business can flourish, and corporate

partners have embraced the “pro-business” spirit our governing bod-ies and staff emulate. Wherever you travel in town, you will find busi-nesses building, growing, and thriving.

In 1986, when our current Village administration took office, fewer than 200 business licenses were issued. Contrast that with the more than 1,200 business licenses issued in 2009! In 1986, there were just 115,000 square feet of industrial space in town. In 2009, we have surpassed 29,000,000 square feet of industrial space — with nearly 35 million square feet anticipated at build-out. Annual retail sales have exploded, and Bolingbrook has become one of the premier hospitality destinations in suburban Chicago. And as a result of that growth in business, more than 23,000 jobs have been created.

The Promenade BolingbrookThe Promenade Bolingbrook is a full-service “lifestyle mall” that

opened in spring 2007 at the intersection of I-355 and Boughton Road. This upscale 1.1 million-square-foot Forest City development is anchored by Bass Pro Shops and Macy’s and includes familiar retailers such as Barnes & Noble, Jos. A. Bank, and many more.

Diners can sample the tasty fare of Gordon Biersch Brewery and Restaurant, Francesca’s, GoRoma, Islamorada Fish Company at Bass Pro Shops, or bd’s Mongolian Grill. Bar Louie features a martini bar with an extensive selection of unique libations, while Salad Creations, Home Plate, and Johnny Rockets provide express service. Auld Dubliner Irish Pub provides authentic cuisine and live music.

But The Promenade isn’t just a shopping center; it’s a pedestrian-friendly, open-air gathering place. Central to the mall is the Village Green, where music is in the air during Summer Concerts on the Green. Warm, sunny days will find children frolicking among

concrete hippos and playful water jets in the enclosed family area. Planters brimming with flowers dot the mall, and there is plenty of comfortable seating.

On frosty days, shoppers can stop by the blazing fire pit to toast chilly fingers. The holiday season finds Santa listening to the whispered wishes of children during the annual Festival of Lights, while shoppers experience a fantastic music and light show choreographed to the sounds of Trans Siberian Orchestra.

The Promenade’s newest edition, Gold Class Cinemas, offers the ulti-mate in Hollywood luxury. Owned and operated by movie production company Village Roadshow, the theater offers full menu and bar service, with unique cocktails and gourmet selections served to patrons enjoying the comfort of their oversized, fully reclining armchairs.

Weber Road CorridorOn the west side of town, where Weber Road, Veteran’s Parkway, and

Boughton Road meet, is another major retail hub. Intersections are lined with a variety of shopping choices, from national chain retailers to small local businesses. A second Meijer store is also located at this end of town, making Bolingbrook the only community in the United States with two Meijer facilities.

This stretch of Weber Road also includes what locals fondly refer to as “Restaurant Row,” home to a number of national restaurant chains as well as unique local eateries.

Economic Resources Spur Community’s GrowthOur population itself contributes to the success of local business

and industry as a workforce. Employers can find all levels of education, skills, training, and experience among our residents. The many local staffing agencies help bring those workers and employers together. Some of the biggest employers are Quantum Foods, employing nearly 1,000; the two Meijers stores, with a workforce of 800; and the Valley View School District, which employs roughly 2,600 people. The new Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital has also brought over 1,200 jobs to town, while the retailers within The Promenade Bolingbrook account for nearly 1,500 jobs alone!

Supporting this entrepreneurial spirit is the Bolingbrook Area Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Village of Bolingbrook. Over 600 members strong, the Chamber offers a number of events and activities that provide networking and business development opportu-nities. It is actively involved in helping businesses grow and thrive.

As you travel around Bolingbrook, you will see that among the most important factors that make Bolingbrook so dynamic is the strength and breadth of its business community. Home to global retail giants and mom-and-pop stores, international companies and home-based businesses, and everything in between, Bolingbrook has it all.

Valley View School District 365U

Educating more than 18,000 students, Valley View School District 365U, which serves both Bolingbrook and nearby Romeoville, has made it a priority to put

children first. Leadership starts at the top with a dedicated school board and Superintendent Dr. Phillip Schoffstall, who have all focused on transform-ing the district’s culture into one that, as Schoffstall says, “values education in and out of the classroom and places the interests of the boys and girls in our schools as its first priority.” This process has included employing high-quality school leaders who have the experience and initiative to provide learning opportunities to the district’s children.

New and renovated facilities complement programs and teaching. As we passed into the 21st century, the district undertook a huge project that started with building the new Bolingbrook High School, which opened in

August 2004. That same year, the former high school building was com-pletely renovated, becoming Brooks Middle School. By the beginning of the 2007–2008 school year, every school in the district had received a complete overhaul. This extensive allocation of resources shows a commitment to providing the best learning environment possible for our students.

The safety of our school populations is another top priority. The district’s safety coordinator has established a proactive program of training, devel-oped crisis response plans, overseen compliance with safety standards, and conducts ongoing safety audits of each school building. Partnerships with other agencies, such as the FBI and Homeland Security, have gained addi-tional support. These progressive safety programs are setting the benchmark for other school districts in Illinois.

Of course, none of this happens without the support of the communities served by the district.

August 2004. That same year, the former high school building was com-

“Valley View is fortunate that the community leaders have crafted and implemented a master plan of economic development that has made the school district the recipient of significant financial support,” says Dr. Schoffstall. “As Bolingbrook and Romeoville have grown, the district has become large enough with sufficient resources to provide a comprehensive education to our children.”

The majority of the school-age children in Bolingbrook are served by Valley View School District. However, as the Village grew, its bound-aries pushed into the Woodridge Elementary and Downers Grove High School districts to the northeast. Another far north neighborhood is in the Naperville 203 District. West of Naperville Road, some newer neighborhoods are in the Indian Prairie District 204, while some others are in the Plainfield 202 District that serves the far southwest side of Bolingbrook. These neighboring school districts maintain similar academic standards, providing a quality educa-tion to our students no matter which part of Bolingbrook they call home.

Fountaindale Public LibraryThe library isn’t just for books anymore.

For that reason, the library plays a signifi-cant role at the heart of the community — not just with education, but with the whole

spectrum of community life. In 2008, voters approved a $48 million referendum to build a state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly library in Bolingbrook. Slated to open in 2010, the new library will feature updated technology, expanded meeting and study areas, and an expansive col-lection of literacy and resource materials and will qualify for LEED certification. As impressive is the library’s commitment to provide continued services during the construction phase.

Higher EducationBolingbrook is ideally located so that our

residents can take advantage of the many options for higher education that are available in nearby communities. Benedictine University, Joliet Junior College, Governor State University, Lewis University, and others are all within easy commut-ing distance. Our proximity to Chicago provides numerous other choices for pursuing additional education or training after high school.

Right here at home, you can find a variety of cohort programs as well. Proposed by the administration is the addition of an “education wing” to the Bolingbrook Community Center. When the economies are in place, undergraduate and graduate courses will be offered through a number of institutions conveniently located on our town center campus.

Adventist Bolingbrook HospitalThe long-awaited Adventist Bolingbrook

Hospital (ABH), opened in 2007, was the first new hospital approved by the state of Illinois in over 25 years. The 138-bed facility features state-of-the-art technology and a basic phi-losophy of whole-person care.

Hospital CEO Rick Mace describes this approach: “Our hospital isn’t just in the life-saving business. We also treat the whole per-son and return them to their own life as soon as possible. When someone comes to our ER or gets admitted to the hospital, the things that are meaningful to them get interrupted and put on hold. We want to get our patients back to their personal lives and back to living life to the fullest.”

Part of this approach is helping patients who may need some additional support in returning to a meaningful life. Whether this means helping to reconnect with fam-ily, reaching out spiritually, or learning new ways to find meaning in life, the staff at ABH is there to meet the needs of each patient — mind, body, and spirit.

From the moment you cross the threshold at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital, the focus of over 500 doctors and nearly 300 other professionals on staff is your total patient

experience. For example, ABH features a no-wait emergency room with Level II trauma care. Unlike most hospital emergency rooms, where patients typically endure extensive waiting before receiving care, at ABH you are evaluated in triage immediately and then moved to the appropriate treatment room, where an intake specialist comes to you to complete your registration.

While in the care of ABH, your entire experience is personalized for you. From your treatment plan to 24-hour room ser-vice, the care you receive is designed around you and your needs. All rooms are private, and because ABH knows that patients fare better when loved ones are nearby, visitors are welcome around the clock — even in ICU — and each room has additional sleep-ing accommodations so that loved ones can stay close. There also is no age limit for chil-dren visiting, as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

Personalized care also means providing patients with the latest technology. Patient records are securely entered digitally and stored electronically in “real time,” making them instantly available to physicians and other professionals involved in each patient’s care. A patient’s doctor can even access

them remotely, and if necessary, send them anywhere in the world for additional con-sultation. ABH offers in-house 64-slice CT scanning, the latest in diagnostic imaging, and minimally invasive surgical techniques as well.

Children facing hospital treatment or a trip to the ER have special needs that are met at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital. Nurses fol-low the child through the emergency depart-ment and inpatient observation stay. Services are provided by physicians who specialize in the treatment of diseases in childhood, and the specially trained staff is available 24 hours a day. The décor of the Children’s Emergency Room is kid-friendly, and the equipment and supplies are kid-sized. ABH provides quality care, state-of-the-art technology, a dedicated staff specialized in pediatrics, and amenities designed to calm fears associated with medi-cal care.

In response to the explosion of local commercial and industrial growth, ABH’s Occupational Health Service enables local businesses to provide employees with injury treatment, physicals and drug testing. Edward Hospital & Health ServicesEdward Hospital & Health Services is a

full-service, regional health care provider offering access to complex medical specialties and innovative programming. The Edward Healthcare Center/Bolingbrook, located at

130 North Weber Road, offers immediate care, imaging, and the services of physicians from Edward Medical Group.

Edward Hospital has 278 private patient rooms. With 4,800 employees, including 1,450 nurses and a medical staff of more than 800 physicians, Edward is one of the largest employers in the region.

Edward has earned a reputation as a health care leader by providing advanced cardiac care, state-of-the-art cancer diagnosis and treatment, the latest imaging technology, care for critically ill newborns, minimally invasive surgery, in vitro fertilization, the newest clinical trials, and behavioral health services through Linden Oaks at Edward.

Edward Hospital, Edward Heart Hospital, Edward Cancer Center, and Linden Oaks at Edward are located just minutes from Bolingbrook on a 50-acre campus near down-town Naperville.

Supported Living OptionsWith the state-of-the-art health care tech-

nology that is available, as well as an aging population, the need for advanced rehabili-tation services and skilled nursing care has become more and more important.

Meadowbrook Manor provides both. In a warm, home-like atmosphere, rehab patients receive care, compassion, and sup-port on the road to recovery from conditions such as joint replacement and stroke. Teams of licensed and certified therapists, along with contracted physiatrists who specialize in rehabilitation and pain management, meet regularly to ensure that the highest level of care is provided.

Heri tage Woods is a brand-new assisted living facility that offers “apartment style” amenities combined with full-service nursing care and an extensive array of recreation activities. With a focus on the details, the staff at Heritage Woods is able to ensure a high quality of life for residents.

Additional Health ServicesBolingbrook is also rich in private prac-

titioners who serve the health care needs of Village residents. Physicians in and around the community specialize in all disciplines from head to toe: neurology to podiatry and everything in between. Government

Village Hall is at the heart of our campus-like Town Center. There you will find four of the six divisions of

our Village government: Executive, Finance, Community Development, and the Police and Fire departments. The Village is governed by a mayor, along with a board of six trustees who are elected at-large, ensuring that each member of the Board represents and answers to all residents.

Current leadership has been in place through a number of terms; our mayor, the Honorable Roger C. Claar, celebrated his 23rd year in office in 2009. This longev-ity has provided a period of stability and

unprecedented growth in the Village. Our leaders have anticipated growth with addi-tions to our infrastructure, following the Village Comprehensive Land Use Plan to maintain growth in a balanced and consis-tent fashion.

Bolingbrook Police DepartmentThe Bolingbrook Police Department

(BPD) has made great strides in establish-ing programs that involve police personnel with the community. By establishing rela-tionships in the community and interacting proactively, officers are seen by residents — both youth and adults — as positive role

Fire Prevention BureauBolingbrook Fire Department has a full-

time Fire Prevention Bureau. Their respon-sibilities include reviewing plans for new construction, inspecting new businesses for initial occupancy, and distributing fire pre-vention surveys to all schools, businesses, and places of public assembly. They also conduct inspections of fire alarm and sup-pression systems, perform annual inspec-tions of fire pumps at businesses where they are required, and investigate all fires.

Maintaining Bolingbrook’s Infrastructure

The 72,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art Public Works and Engineering facility is part of our Town Center campus. This distinctive prairie-style building houses the two divi-sions of local government that keep Village thoroughfares and other property attractive and well-maintained.

DuPage TownshipThe township is the oldest form of gov-

ernment in the state of Illinois, and ours takes an active part in the community. By law, they are required to perform three func-tions: general assistance, property assess-ment, and road and bridge maintenance. Our township also provides much more, including youth, family, and senior services; a food pantry; marriage licenses; and emer-gency assistance.

More Than Just GovernmentAlso located within the Town Center cam-

pus is the Bolingbrook Community Center, home of the Bolingbrook Area Chamber of Commerce and a variety of at-risk youth programs. This facility, recently donated to the Village by a local developer, is in the final stages of renovation and provides meeting and storage space for the community’s many nonprofit organizations, conference rooms, a child care space, a kitchen, and more.

Behind Village Hall is a beautiful park-like setting that provides the perfect location for a number of Village events. The building is also home to an impressive performing arts center, home to our own Theatre-on-the-Hill players. Summer concerts can fill the air with music.

Two-time recipient of the National Gold Medal Award, the Bolingbrook Park District hosts an annual outdoor paintball tourna-ment at the Bolingbrook Recreation and Aquatic Center (BRAC)that attracts participants and fans from all over the world. The 68,000-square-foot BRAC offers waterpark fun at Pelican Harbor. Residents will also find the fully equipped LifeStyles Fitness Center, along with a gymnasium and rooms for a full schedule of classes for every interest.

Across town, the Park District’s 46,000-square-foot Annerino Center features a climbing wall; LifeStyles Fitness Center II; a dedi-cated martial arts room; a spa area that includes sauna, whirlpool, and massage services; an arts and crafts room; a gymnasium; racquetball courts; and a competitive gymnastics area.

Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the comprehensive greenway and bike path system initiated by the Park District. Three major bike-ways — the DuPage River Greenway, the ComEd Greenway, and the Lily Cache Greenway — create more than nine linear miles of biking and walking paths that meander through prairie, woodlands, and along the east branch of the DuPage River.

The Bolingbrook Park District also operates a nine-hole tourna-ment-style course, Boughton Ridge, which features a full-service res-taurant and banquet facility known as The Ashbury. Newly constructed in 2009, The Ashbury’s at Boughton Ridge provides a terrific venue for corporate parties and golf outings, as well as great pub-style fare.

Tucked away along the DuPage Greenway and DuPage River, Hidden Lakes Trout Farm is a peaceful 15-acre semi-wooded gem featuring four fishing ponds, a canoe launch, fishing piers, a bridge, and nature-interpretive signage.

For the true nature lover, the Park District has established a Department of Natural Resources. Its purpose is to initiate a public-awareness campaign to educate residents about the benefits of natural areas and wildlife, to manage and improve the Park District’s natural areas, and to plan a comprehensive schedule of environmental and interpretive programs. Recently opened is the LEED (Leadership

in Energy and Environmental Design) platinum-certified nature center, providing both recreational and

educational opportunities.

The Park District also maintains a number of different sports parksthat dot the community. Residents will find an assortment of lighted ball fields and tennis courts, football and soccer fields, basketball courts, play equipment, picnic pavilions, a skate park, a cricket field, and paved parking right in their neighborhoods. All told, the district maintains 975 acres of parks, including eight community facilities and 45 park sites.

There are other avenues for recreation and entertainment in town as well. Wilderness Falls provides two 18-hole miniature golf courses and batting cages for teams and individuals. Inside the clubhouse are the latest in arcade-style games and a party room for group events.

Ditka’s Sports Dome and Gonzo’s Tap and Grill, named after legendary Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka, is a popular hangout for sports fans. The dome provides an indoor driving range and softball and soccer facilities and is totally revamped in the fall into an impres-sive haunted house.

Rocket Ice Sports and Fun Center is an indoor skating facility offering a variety of programs such as hockey, figure and synchronized skating, and instruction to children and adults. Open skating sessions and party packages are also available.

DiningBolingbrook is also home to a full spectrum of dining establish-

ments, offering everything from hot dogs to a full-course gourmet meal and everything in between. National chain restaurants line up on what locals fondly call “Restaurant Row” on the west side of town, while other national and regional favorites and unique local eateries and cof-fee shops can be found at The Promenade and sprinkled around town. No matter where you live or visit in Bolingbrook, the food or beverage of your choice is not far away.

Our newest additions include Francesca’s at the Promenade, Cattleman’s Ranch, and Home Plate, all offering a variety of menu options. Long-time favorite Family Square provides 24-hour breakfast service along with traditional Greek-style family restaurant choices. Annete’s, a “Southern-soul food” restaurant, will open in 2010, and a brand new Portillo’s has been constructed just a block away. Whatever your palate desires, Bolingbrook has what you’re looking for.

Cultural AttractionsEvents on the Village Hall Grounds

Throughout the year, the park-like grounds behind Village Hall are teeming with residents enjoying the many activities hosted there.

In June, the • Village Picnic brings together fun, food, entertainment, and many local nonprofit organizations. June also kicks off the Park District’s Summer Concert Series at the •Performing Arts Center. This state-of-the-art theatre hosts a full schedule of guest performers, concerts, dance presentations, musi-cals, and stage plays and is home to our own Theatre-on-the-Hill Players.

The site is also host to the • Village Jubilee in August, a four-day event that includes carnival rides, games, a car show, and nightly entertainment. In August residents are uplifted at the • Joyfest, an annual event fea-turing the musical groups of several churches performing together. In December, the • Festival of Lights fills the night with holiday activities such as a live nativity scene, starlit horse-drawn carriage rides, and local storytellers recounting classic holiday tales, culmi-nating in the annual tree-lighting ceremony.

Other Cultural VenuesThose interested in aviation can visit the • Illinois Aviation Museum, currently housed in Hangar One at Bolingbrook’s Clow International Airport. For our youth, the Park District sponsors • DanceForce, an award-winning dance troupe that performs all over the area, while the local schools hold choir, band and thespian performances during the school year. DuPage Township and the Black History Awareness Club host an •annual Black History Month, celebrating the culture and achieve-ments of our African-American population. Those of Hispanic heritage enjoy the • Cinco de Mayo celebration in May, hosted by Westbrook Christian Church and Gente Unida, and celebrate Mexican Independence Day, sponsored by Future Heritage Organization in September, with folkloric dance, exhibits, and authentic Mexican fare. Our active local Pakistani-American Association holds a • Pakistani flag-raising ceremony and Taste of Pakistan in the summer to commemorate their cultural heritage. • Regional attractions: World-class museums, music, theater, and other cultural events are also just a short drive away in Chicago and other surrounding communities.
