The leader of Nigeria's Boko Haram Islamists Abubakar Shekauclaimed responsibility for a bombing in Nigeria's capital thatkilled at least 75 people, in a video message obtained by AFP onSaturday.

"We are the ones that carried out the attack in Abuja," Shekausaid in the 28minute video, referring to the deadliest attack everin Nigeria's capital which targeted a bus station packed withmorning commuters.

Seated with a kalashnikov resting on his left shoulder anddressed in military uniform, the insurgent commander spoke inboth Arabic and the Hausa language that is dominant in northernNigeria.

The message was delivered to AFP in a manner consistent with previous videos from Boko Haram.

The bombing at the Nyanya bus terminal on the outskirts of Abuja was the first major attack in the capital in two years.

Most of the insurgents' violence in recent months had been concentrated in the group's remote northeastern stronghold,where the military is waging an 11monthold offensive.

The attack in Abuja underscored the serious threat the Islamists pose to Africa's most populous country and topeconomy.

Shekau indicated that Boko Haram has fighters based in the capital.

"We are in your city," he said, addressing Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan.

Shekau has been declared a global terrorist by the United States, which has put a $7 million bounty (5.1 million euros)on his head.How are we doing?



Hours after the Abuja bombing, gunmen stormed a girls' school in the northeast and kidnapped 129 students, an attackalso blamed on Boko Haram that has sparked global outrage.

Fortyfour of the girls have escaped so far, according to officials, and the military has said it has launched a majorsearch and rescue operation.

Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud called on SudanesePresident Omer Hassan AlBashir Friday night, congratulatinghim on the successful surgery he has undergone as well as thelifting of US sanctions on the Sudan.

For his part, the Sudanese leader expressed thanks andgratitude to the king for his fraternal sentiments and to the Saudigovernment for the efforts exerted in order to back lifting thesanctions imposed on the African country.

The Obama administration took steps on Friday to lift a 20yeartrade embargo against Sudan, unfreeze assets and removefinancial sanctions in response to the east African nation’s cooperation in fighting ISIS and other groups.

The lifting of the sanctions, which date back to the Clinton administration, will however be delayed by 180 days toencourage Sudan to take further actions on improving human rights, resolving political divisions and military conflicts.

That leaves the final decision up to Presidentelect Donald Trump to implement the sanctions relief, a senior Obamaadministration official said.

“Sudan has long expressed a desire to get out from under sanctions, as well as other restrictions that the United Stateshas imposed on Sudan going back 20 years,” the official said.

“Over the past two years we have looked for a way to engage with Sudan in a way we could overcome some of the lackof trust of the past,” the official added.

Trump’s transition team has been briefed on the move, the official said, adding that the measures do not affect Sudan’slabel as a state sponsor of terrorism nor does it impact sanctions tied to Khartoum’s role in the Darfur conflict.

“We have briefed the transition team and provided information about this. We can’t speak to their intentions or what theyintend to do next,” the official said.

The sanctions relief is expected to impact businesses that deal with agriculture, importexport services, transportation,technology and medical equipment, and oil, the official said.

Sudan’s foreign ministry welcomed the move, calling it an “important positive development in bilateral relations betweenSudan and the United States.”

The ministry said it hoped further cooperation would allow Sudan to be removed from the US list of states sponsoringterrorism.

The United States first imposed sanctions on Sudan in 1997, including a trade embargo and blocking the government’sassets, for human rights violations and terrorism concerns. The United States layered on more sanctions in 2006 forwhat it said was complicity in the violence in Sudan’s Darfur region.
