Gardenbordersdefineandcontainthelandscape.ThisyearwehavesoughttogobeyondourbordersbyincorporatingnativeFloridaecosystemplantingsandagricultureintonewgardenareastogiveabettersenseofplaceandconnectednesstoourregion.WearealsoplanningeducationalprogramsthatthatwillgobeyondourborderstoconnectwithnewaudiencesbothhereandthroughouttheState.

DesignMostnotablywastheworkwebeganinearly2013withlandscapearchitectThomasWoltzandhisteamatNelsonByrdWoltztodesignthegardenprojectsinPhaseIofouraward-winningMasterPlan.In2013,thisplanreceivedthehighestawardfromtheFloridachapteroftheAmericanSocietyofLandscapeArchitects(ASLA)–theFredericB.StresauAward.

Thisyear-and-a-halfdesignprocesshaspushedtheboundariesofourgardenbothfigurativelyandliterallywithplansforaChildren’sGarden,KitchenGarden,PollinatorGardenandFloridaWildGarden,aswellasanewcirculationpaththatwillprovidebetteraccessforall.

EducationWealsobegantoputafinerpointonourneweducationalpartnershipwiththeUniversityofFloridaInstituteforFood

&AgriculturalScienceExtensionService.Dr.CynthiaKlemmerwashiredasournewDirectorofEducationinSeptemberandhasbeenworkingtocreateaprogramcalledGardensforLife.

Thiseducationaloutreachprogramwillbringediblegardeningtoschoolsandcommunitiesinamulti-countyregion.Florida

ExtensionServicestaffwillhaveofficespaceattheGardenstoprovidetechnical,administrativeandlogisticalsupporttoschoolsandcommunities.Wewillalsobeofferingmoreeducationalopportunitiesonsitetoourmembersandvisitors.

The CarillonGeertD’hollander,ourfourthCarillonneurtoservein84years,completedhisfirstseasonwithusin2012-2013.Heistrulyamusicianwhorecognizesnoborderswhenitcomestocarillonmusic.Fromhisinnovativearrangementsandnewcarilloncompositionstoinstructingstudents,Geertisbringinganewlevelofexcellencetothecarillonprogram.Thissummer,hetraveledextensivelytoperformandconductmasterworkshopsintheU.S.andEurope.

The Gardens & Conservation“Beyondourborders”wasdefinitelythemantraforourhorticultureandconservationstaffthisyear.

Newplantingsexpandedourpaletteofnativeandbloomingplants.ApathontheTowerLawnwasreopenedaftermanydecadestogivevisitorsacloserviewofthebrassdoor.Ourbehind-the-scenesprojectsincludedexpandingthenurserytobegingrowinghard-to-findvarietiesofplantsforthefuturegardenexpansion.Weexperimentedwithbio-charandvermiculturetoimprovethesoilinplantingbedsaroundtheVisitorCenter,andpublishedthreeresearcharticlesinpeer-reviewedscientificjournals.

Ourdedicatedconservationteamexpandedtheirreachthisyearwithrareplantintroductionsatfourdifferent

sitesaroundtheState,inludingthefirstpopulationintroductionofacritically-endangeredplantontoprivatelands.Thetypeofresearchourteamisconductingonthemicrohabitatsofrareplantshasseldombeendonesoastopushtheboundariesofunderstandingofwhattheseplantsneedtosurvive.

Spring2013sawtheopeningofournew1.5-milePreserveTrailandpicnicshelteralongtheentranceroad,andanoutdoorclassroomwasbuiltnexttotheLakeWales

Beyond Our Borders

HighSchoolontheBokTowerGardensPreserve.Interpretivesignsandwildflowerplantingsattractedmanyvisitorstothistrailtoexplorebeyondthebordersofthehistoriccoregarden.

Retail Services & MarketingOurBluePalmettoCaféandTower&GardenGiftShopsetanewrevenuerecordagainthisyearbygrossing$1.14million.WereleasedtheRizzoliPresspublicationBok Tower Gardens: America’s Taj Mahal intimeforEdwardBok’s150thbirthday.Iwashonoredtoco-authorthisbookwitharchitectandartistKennethTreister,featuringphotographsbyDanForer.

Themarketingdepartmentcontinuedtoinnovateandextendtothefurthestreachesofcyberspace.Amongthisyear’shighlightswastheunveilingofanewwebsitewithfresh,“responsivedesign”technology,whichautomaticallyadjuststhelayouttothemobilephoneordeviceitisbeingviewedon.WeincreasedourinvestmentsinsocialmediamarketingandsecuredgrantsfromVisitCentralFloridatopromoteandadvertiseseveralofourmajorevents.

People, Events & ProgramsOurpassionatecorpsof375volunteersdonated48,034hoursofworkinallareasofouroperations.Wecouldnotaccomplishallthatwedowithoutthisincrediblevolunteerstaff.OurBoardofDirectorshavesteppedupthetotheleadershiproleinourdesignplanningandfundraisingefforts,whichismakingourfuturegardenexpansionareality.

Visitationfor2012-2013remainedstrongat149,226,andmembershipsreached4,407households.

Attendanceforourevents,programs,andPinewoodEstatetoursexceededallexpectationsthisyear.VisitationtoPinewoodEstatedoubledin2012-2013,andeducationprogramsmorethandoubledinparticipationto3,802students.TheBoktoberfestPlantSalereachedarecordhighof7,934attendees,andourweddingrentalrevenueexceeded$70,000.Wealsosawmanymoretourgroupsthisyear–attendancerosefrom5,574to6,225people.

ConcertUndertheStarsfounditsaudiencethisyearbypushingthemusicalgenreboundariestofeatureaneclecticmixof“jazzgrass”andAmericanamusic.

PhilanthropyOurvisionfortheGardenstostayrelevantandsustainablecan’tbeachievedwithoutreachingbeyondourborderstoinspirephilanthropy.StafftraveledfromMiamitoMainetocultivatesupportforthefuture

andtocultivatesupportforour$12millionPreserve the Legacy, Steward the Future campaign.Wehavemademanynewfriendsandrevivedmanyformerfriendshipsinourtravels,whichbodeswellforourfuture.

InOctober2012,IacceptedtheDutch-AmericanHeritageAwardonbehalfofEdwardW.Bokforhiscontributionstothiscountry.EdwardBok,asmanyof

youknow,waswell-knownforchallengingthestatusquoandpushingtheboundariesofconventionalthought.Asweenterour85thyearasapublicgarden,theboard,staffandIarehonoredtobestewardsandvisionariesofEdwardBok’slegacy.Weinviteyou,oursupportersandfriends,tojoinusin

continuingtopushbeyondthebordersoftheGardens.
