Sil Lyra, an Olympic coach at the 2004 Olympics in the modern pentathlon, will teach your kids the principles, strategies and movement of fencing. Known as “physical chess,” fencing improves hand-eye coordination, concentration, physical fitness, confidence, self-esteem and respect. YOUTH MOUNTAIN BIKE SCHOOLMountain biking is a lifelong sport and is perfect for the natural surroundings we find ourselves in each day living here in Boise. Boise Parks & Recreation is proud to partner with the Southwest Idaho Mountain Bik-ing Association (SWIMBA) to help teach basic riding skills, safety, bike maintenance and riding etiquette. All classes are designed to improve young riders’ con-fidence, fitness level, strength, coordination and a life-long love and appreciation for mountain biking. To help ensure everyone has a positive experience please be sure to bring your maintained bike, helmet, gloves,

sunglasses, water bottle (camel packs are great!), a snack, and proper dress for the weather. Classes will meet at the SWIMBA bike shed (next to tennis courts) at Fort Boise Community Center.

PARENT & CHILD 6-8 YRS + ADULTTogether, you and your child will learn the basics of mountain biking as well as develop fitness, strength and coordination. And you’ll both have also a lot of fun! YOUTH TENNISTEN & UNDER TENNIS 6-8 & 9-11 YRSChildren ages 6-8 can learn the game of tennis using modified tennis balls and smaller courts to allow for easier learning. Balls are lower in compression: they bounce lower and don’t move as fast. This gives kids time to get to the ball and helps them develop optimal swing patterns. LAWN & LANDSCAPEDave Beck will give an overview of important topics related to growing a beautiful lawn. We’ll talk about turfgrass growth, physiology, and affective cultivation strategies for different grass types common in Idaho. Beck is responsible for the care and maintenance of more than 300 acres of turf in city parks.Landscape architect Toby Norton will provide background on landscape design, including orientation, hydrozones, and proper plant placement. ROSES & IRRIGATIONThis course will cover all the important tasks involved in the care of roses in the Boise area. From proper pruning techniques to selecting the right plant for the job, Andrea Wurtz will review the basic steps involved to produce beautiful healthy roses. Wurtz is a master gardener and certified landscape technician who is responsible for the care of Kathryn Albertson Park and all the roses in Ann Morrison Park. Dan Falconer will teach a short course on how to use your irrigation system to efficiently water your garden and landscaping in our dry Idaho climate. We’ll discuss sprinkler maintenance and design and comparisons of different types of emitters such as drip, spray heads and rotors.
