1 Issue 82 November 2017 From Lesley: A BIG Thank – you! I would like to express my sincere gratitude to you all; for your kind words, all the lovely messages in my card and so many gifts! - I was overwhelmed by your generosity. I had lots of fun browsing in Hobbycraft to spend my gift-card and stocked up card-making supplies. I haven’t yet spent it all - a cunning ploy so I can enjoy another shopping spree on Christmas crafts. Thank you all again, Lesley x Our Next Meeting – Tuesday 12 th December In December, we will be having a Christmas Party with games, a quiz, a light-hearted performance by our Acting group, Xmas food, non-alcoholic punch, and other seasonal goodies. There will be a raffle and the December competition will be a game this month, called Naughty or Nice, no preparation needed. Jack Owen will be there with her delicious small (£5.50) and medium (£15.50) Christmas cakes for sale. Jack will be at our November meeting to take orders. WI resolutions shortlist Campaigns are a significant part of our WI organisation – it is 100 years since the first WI campaign, which focussed on the need for sanitary houses. The campaign process starts with WI’s from across the country submitting resolution proposals to NFWI in September each year. A representative from each WI Federation meet and select suitable resolutions – this year out of 68 proposals, 5 resolutions have been selected for us to consider. WI members choose the resolution they believe is best turned into a WI Campaign. This year’s resolution selection is: Positive Body Image in a digital age Stop female genital mutilation Raising awareness of modern slavery in the UK Mental Health Matters Healthier Mouth, Healthier Bodies Our WI will hold a voting session at our January meeting – each member can vote for one resolution. Look out for details in the November issue of WI Life. They are available on NFWI website and My WI. How will you vote? Bra Bank Since October 2015, BRWI have been collecting bras on behalf on the charity Against Breast Cancer. Bras that are in a good condition are sent to Africa; those that cannot be used are sent for textile recycling. So far we have sent 1600 bras to the charity and there are another 270 currently awaiting collection. If you would like to donate your unwanted bras, these can be given Bognor Regis WI THE BUZZ

I had lots of fun browsing in Hobbycraft to spend my gift-card and stocked up card-making supplies. to Lesley Guppy at a meeting or deposited in our Bra Bank which is located at My Sister’s House CIC (opposite Bognor Library). Thank you for your continuing support. My Sister’s House As you may know My Sister’s House is one of our selected charities for this year. Here are ways we can help them at the moment …

• At our November meeting please bring along donations of toiletries or sanitary products and/or a child’s gift up to the value of £4 (unwrapped). The latter will be for an event they are running on December 9th.

• They are a choice within the local Tesco’s ‘bags of help’ scheme this month – so please consider putting your plastic coin into the MSH compartment.

News from our Treasurer: Subscriptions for 2018 It is that time of year again. Membership fees for 2018 are £41.00 for Full members and £20 for Dual members. Our WI keeps £20 of this, the remainder goes to the NFWI and WSFWI. There will be envelopes available at our November meeting for your subscription. Please make cheques payable to Bognor Regis WI. If paying by cash, please secure the envelope so that the £1 doesn’t fall out. Please also complete the 2018 Membership information sheet enclosed within. Many Thanks Budget 2017/18 Attached to the Buzz is the Budget for this financial year 2017/18. If you have any queries about the Budget, do email me or contact me by phone before the next WI meeting on Tuesday 14th November. The Budget has been compiled assuming we will have 64 Full members and 3 Dual members leaving us with a surplus of £139. Celia Janering (Treasurer)

Correspondence via our website: A representative from the Citizens Advice Bureau in Bognor Regis got in touch asking for volunteers. We are aware that many of you are already volunteers, but some of you may be interested in what he has sent us regarding the sort of help they need …

Could this mean Me? Volunteering with us is a great way of giving help and advice to those in need. However, it also is good for the volunteer themselves – continuing to use existing skills, learning new ones, keeping mentally active, and ‘giving something back’ to the local Bognor community. So we are looking for people who can: * meet and greet clients at reception, * manage administrative tasks, * or become trained as a digital assessor or face-to-face adviser. If you are interested in volunteering with us, please apply via our website at: arunandchichestercab.org.uk/volunteering/ Registered Charity No. 1099640

Group News Christmas Craft Special: Barbara Foster writes: If enough members are interested in making a stunning table centre/wreath, I will be running a workshop on Tuesday 21st November, starting at 1.30pm. Numbers will be limited to 6 as sewing machines will be needed. If you are interested please sign up and I will contact you with the details. The table centre will be on display on Tuesday.

Walking Group: Arundel was the location for the last two walks – the longer walk took us to the Ghurkha Bridge which, following a storm, was rebuilt by the soldiers. The short walk at Swanbourne Lake surprised us with a very close sighting of a kestrel. It was sitting on a branch about 10 metres from us at eye level, as we were up on the lakeside bank. For next walks, see below - If you enjoy the countryside and walking, you are welcome to come along, just sign up at WI or contact Jan Marsden. Acting Up – Shakespeare we’re not! Our new activity group has responded to the expectation that they would put on a performance at our December meeting. They say: “Probably before we are ready to do so, and it may be our first and last performance! We hope it will give you as much laughter as we have had preparing for it! But, please, do not expect too much – enjoy it with festive spirit.” Although Acting Up will take a well-earned break, new members will be welcome in the New Year. Future dates will be advertised. Flick Chicks: There will be opportunities to see ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ and ‘Paddington 2’ over the next week.

SCIFFLe Group: Members of the SCIFFLe group went to Tate Britain, London on 10th November to see the temporary display on Special Effects pioneer Ray Harryhausen. They loved seeing the original models used for stop-motion work on films such as 'Jason and the Argonauts' and 'Jason and the Golden Fleece'; and were especially enthralled by the remarkable paintings and drawings which had inspired Harryhausen. Sue Austin writes: Monday 30th October we went up to Tate Britain to see the Ray Harryhausen exhibition .... it was AWESOME!!! Thanks to Karen for organising it.

If you have signed up for a group event, please let the organiser and/or hostess know in advance if you are unable to attend.

Edited by Kate Claisse – on behalf of Bognor Regis WI Committee. All submissions for the next issue to be received by Wednesday 6th December. Thank-you.
