From the Vicar
Every Lent at St. Benedict, we change Sunday worship in some dramatic ways. We
rearrange the furniture, “choir style,” so that we face each other like Benedictine
monks in a monastery. We empty the font of water and fill it with sand. We take
away the altar platform and stand together around the altar in a crowd for
communion. We start worship with a confession (we do a long one on the first
Sunday of Lent! – the Great Litany). This year, we’ll also use the traditional language
of Rite 1 from the 1928 prayer book, too – it can be beautiful, and sometimes
strange.
Some folks cringe every Lent at these changes. But Lent is meant to be a time of
discomfort. This isn’t to punish ourselves but to stretch our understanding of God to
new places. Lent pushes our spirituality out of the comfort zone!
This year, on our website and in the narthex, you will find a little “how to” guide for
giving up (or taking on) something for Lent. This isn’t required, but it can be a
powerful way to commemorate the season. Is there a way to make yourself a little
more uncomfortable this Lent, not just at church, but in your daily or weekly life?
Giving up meat on Fridays, or every day? Giving up shopping once day a week?
Giving up alcohol? Taking on some spiritual reading?
You can be creative. One year, a St. Benedict youth gave up mascara! Last year, my
discipline was to drive the “long way” out of our subdivision each time I went
somewhere, to slow myself down.
Lent is a time to try to stretch the strength of our spirits and bodies and learn to fill
our empty places with God, instead of other stuff.
Rend your hearts and not your clothing. Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, and relents from punishing. (Joel 2:13)

Children’s Education
Classes meet after worship, from about 10:15-11:15am on the second and fourth
Sundays of each month.
Holy Moly Bible: Kids are divided by age group for crafts (Ruth & Sarah). Then all
ages will gather together for the Bible story and video (Jacqueline, Ruth, Sarah).
Holy Moly I, ages 4-6 (Ruth Denofrio), along green hallway.
Holy Moly II, ages 7-10 (Sarah Allcock), second classroom, blue hallway.
Sunday Youth Group: ages 11-16 (Rev. Adam Frieberg), first classroom, blue

Lent for Children
Sock and Underwear Drive
The Sunday School will collect underwear and socks for homeless boys and girls
living at Morningstar Mission, to be offered and blessed at the Maundy Thursday
service. Stay tuned for more info.
Create a “Jerusalem Mobile”
A gift to all families with young children. Cut out a picture with a scripture on the
back for each day of Lent, and use yarn or string to make a mobile that tells the story
of Jesus in Jerusalem.
Read the Bible Together
Suggested for kids age 4 and up: The Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story Whispers
His Name, Sally Lloyd-Jones, $10-17
Suggested for kids age 9 and up: The Story, ZonderKidz, $8-10

Lent for Adults Inquirers’ Class
Interested in learning more about your faith? in being confirmed or
baptized? in becoming an Episcopalian, or reaffirming your faith as
an Episcopalian? Come join a discussion-based class with Rev. Heidi
for people in all places on their spiritual journey. Meeting TBD
depending on participants.
Wednesday Bible Study – Romans
7:00 – 8:30 p.m. - The Rev. Adam Frieberg
Explore Paul’s magnificent letter to the Romans with Adam, who studied Greek in
seminary with a special emphasis on Paul.
Sunday Seminars -- meet after worship in the couch room The Gospel of John – Dick Bennett The Lenten Gospel stories are familiar to all of us! These specific Gospel stories
have been listened to by the Church for 1800 years. We will simply listen to the
Gospel and ask ourselves: "hear what the Spirit is saying to you"!

The Rite of Reconciliation (Confession)

Lenox.
Holy Baptism You are welcome to consider baptism for you or your child at St.
Benedict! Especially appropriate Sundays include when the Bishop will
be visiting with us (April 6), Easter morning (April 20), and Pentecost
(June 8). Contact Rev. Heidi to talk about dates and scheduling pre-
baptismal instruction.

Collect personal items for the men of Morningstar Mission.

The Episcopal Church of South Sudan
We will be taking donations for the churches of our
companion diocese, Renk, South Sudan as they minister to
the needs of refugees, orphans, the hungry, and the injured
as a result of the civil war. Give directly at
www.episcopalrelief.org.
Daylight Savings – “Spring Forward” Sunday, March 9
Daylight Savings returns on March 9. Sadly, this means we get one
less hour of sleep. But what an appropriate way to start the First
Sunday of Lent! Set your clocks forward one hour so you won’t be
late for church.

Contemplative Prayer Group Thursday, March 13, 9:00-10:30 am
Lectio Divina is listening for the still, small voice of God that personally speaks to
you while reading Scripture. The simple steps of this ancient prayer practice are read,
reflect, respond and rest – the four “R’s”. Read a Scripture passage slowly and listen
with your heart for a phrase or word that stands out for you. During a second reading
of the same passage, reflect on what touches you, maybe speaking that response
aloud or writing it in a journal. Third, respond with a prayer or expression of what
you have experienced and what it calls you to. Then, rest in silence after the reading.

Grace and Race Friday, March 21 – 6:30 p.m.
Join us for dinner and a movie on Friday, March 21, 2014 at 6:30 pm at St. Benedict.
The movie Traces of the Trade is about a prominent Rhode Island, the DeWolfs,
family who trace their involvement in the triangle of the slave trade. The Episcopal
Church has “enthusiastically” endorsed Traces of the Trade screening at the General
Convention and regional conventions. Come out and enjoy a wonderful dinner and a
thought provoking movie. Sponsored by Donnie and Donna Williams, and Grace
and Race.
Journey to the Holy Land December 26, 2014 – January 8, 2015 sponsored by the Peace and Justice Committee & Episcopal Peace Fellowship of the Diocese of Chicago
Take a trip to the Holy Land to better understand the complexities of the history and
of the conflict between the Palestinian people and Israel. We will visit the sites where
Jesus lived and died and from which Christianity developed its traditions. We will
also meet with religious leaders from all three faiths, as well as community organizers,
members of the United Nations and government organizations. The cost of the trip
will be $1400-1500/person, not including airfare and insurance. Deadline for
registration is May 1. Deposit of $500 is due June 1. Please contact Rev. Anthony

We had a successful planning meeting for our Sunday Seminar on February
2nd. We have planned several events throughout the year and hope that many of
you will join us in this worthy cause, especially the BBQ in August. If you have any

Congratulations, Donna Ialongo! The Rev. Donna Ialongo, our former priest associate, has been called
as the interim rector of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Glen Ellyn.
This is wonderful news for Donna and for St. Barnabas, whose
rector, Matt Gunter, left after he was elected Bishop of the Diocese of
Fond du Lac. Donna will leave her job at Northwestern College to
serve St. Barnabas full-time. This also means Donna won't be
available to serve as our supply priest during Rev. Heidi's sabbatical in
the fall, but the sabbatical team is confident we will find another wonderful priest to
worship and preach with us. Blessings to Donna in her new ministry!
