    HOMILY FOR PASSION/PALM SUNDAY

This last Sunday before Holy Week has always been known as Palm Sunday, indicating the celebratory manner in which Jesus was welcomed into Jerusalem. As often now it is referred to as Passion

Sunday because today’s gospel is the story of the or-deal Jesus would endure so soon after arriving in the Holy City. We listen to the horrible details of the arrest, trial, humiliation, and execution of our Lord. In this deluge of descriptions only one thing is neces-sary for us to remember and reflect on today and throughout this week we rightly call “Holy” – the Cross. The cross is the summary of all the scenes and sentiments of Passion Sunday. It was the brutal in-strument of capital punishment reserved for slaves, traitors, and terrorists in the time of Jesus. The cross offered not one shred of respect or dignity to the one nailed to it. The cross gave not a moment of relief to the agony of the one crucified, except for final release into death. And yet it is the central symbol of our faith tradition – not the palms, but the Cross. Jesus died on the cross and that act changed the whole scope of human destiny. It also changed the way we see the cross. What had been merely an evil instru-ment of inhumane torture now became the sign and symbol of the deepest, greatest love the world has ever known. Jesus gave a whole new meaning to the cross when He said, “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” And then He practiced what He preached when He laid his bleed-ing body on that wood. And that cross was hoisted into the air for all to see and concur, There is no greater Love than This. The cross is the focus of our prayer and penance this final week of Lent. How privileged we are to make the sign of the cross as we begin and end every day, every Mass, every prayer. May we never again make it casually without thought. How blessed we are to make the cross an essential part of our lives. Jesus said, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow me.” Did it not seem that the Passion reading came to a very quiet, somber, anti-climactic end today? The real climax is yet to come. Easter. The cross of Jesus shows us the way from death to life. There we shall see the empty cross and the empty tomb and know the fullness of Life and Love.
