AMAZING FACTS The Skeletal System• The largest bone is the pelvis or hip bone. It actually consists of six

bones joined firmly together.• The smallest bone is the stirrup inside the ear. It is hardly larger

than a grain of rice.

The Nervous System• The brain uses about 20% of the energy, although it only makes

up about 2% of our body weight.• It is estimated there are between 100 billion to 1 trillion nerve

cells in the brain. The Muscular System• There are about 60 muscles in the face. Smiling is easier than

frowning. It takes 20 muscles to smile and over 40 to frown.• The smallest muscle in the body is the stapedius, deep in the

inner ear. It is only 5 mm long and thinner than a cotton thread. It is involved in sound recognition.

The Circulatory System• The heart beats around 3 billion times in an average person’s life.• About 2 million blood cells die in the human body every second,

and the same number are formed each second. The Respiratory System• The highest recorded “sneeze speed” is 102 miles per hour.• The surface area of the lungs is roughly the same size as one side

of a tennis court.

AN INTRODUCTION

BODY WORLDS & The Cycle of Life—a remarkable educational exhibition from physician and pioneering anatomist Dr. Gunther von Hagens—invites you to consider the form, function and beauty of the human body through all stages of life.

As part of the internationally-renowned BODY WORLDS teaching collection—seen by nearly 41 million people across 4 continents—The Cycle of Life showcases the wonders of human development, demonstrates the complexity of our physical self and resilience and vulnerability of our bodies in distress, disease and good health. Visitors will marvel at the life processes that are captured in the exhibition and will leave with a new appreciation for the power we have to keep our bodies healthy throughout our life span.

This powerful lesson on the form, function, intricacy and beauty of the human body includes:• An in-depth look at all body systems • Insights into the effects of aging and

disease on these systems • Understanding the impact of healthy

lifestyle choices• And so much more . . .

“The opportunity to view the details of human anatomy in action is one that should not be missed. BODY WORLDS helps us to personally encounter and reflect on our own bodies and how we must pay attention to and care for them.”

Dr. Barth Wright - Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences – Department of Anatomy

“People are preoccupied with their bodies but they don’t know how they function. BODY WORLDS will give them access to the many miracles of the human body and help them understand their physical selves.”

Dr. Stanley G. Korenman, MD. UCLA Medical Center

PLASTINATION – WHAT IT IS & HOW IT’S DONE• Plastination was invented by Dr. Gunther von Hagens in 1977 at the University of Heidelberg,

Germany and has continuously been developed since.• Plastination is a technique that stops the decomposition of a deceased body and produces

solid, odorless and durable anatomical specimens for scientific, medical and public instruction without the use of glass barriers or formaldehyde.

• A whole-body plastinate requires approximately 1,500 working hours to complete.

You will examine over 100 individual plastinated specimens specifically curated for the exhibition, including 15 full-body plastinates made available thru a unique body donation program that ensures verified intent of living donor prior to death. For the complete illustration of the plastination process, visit UnionStation.org/CycleofLife
