August 2011 FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Members and Friends of the Hill United Presbyterian Church: In this life, it can be a challenge to consistently live as a faithful Disciple of Christ. However, living that life with Christ consistently is one of the most compelling witnesses to other people in this world as we seek to share Jesus’ love and good news. How can you and I keep a consistent life in Jesus Christ going? Let me suggest seven ways: 1. Daily prayer… 2. Daily study of the Bible even in very small
amounts… 3. Daily acts of kindness and love toward
other people… 4. Daily talking about Jesus’ love for us to
others… 5. At least weekly worship of God with the
people of God… 6. Regularly giving in a proportionate manner
of our money for the cause of Christ’s church and ministry, along with our talent and time…
7. Periodic study of Christian literature and readings…
This can be a way that, as Jesus says to us, we can “take up our cross daily and follow Him!” Blessings in following of Christ Jesus consistently! Grace to you and Peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, Pastor Clark Rev. Clark Sawyer

BIBLE READING FOR AUGUST REVEREND BARRY DAWSON HEADING
FOR OMAN
Barry Dawson, former co-pastor, and his wife Shelly will begin a new assignment on Sept. 1, 2011. Barry will be
serving as a missionary in the Sultanate of Oman in the Mid-East as a Reformed Church of America Co-Chaplain of the Protestant Church in Oman. This will be a partnership with the Anglican Church. Barry and Shelly will relocate to Muscat, Oman. Barry will be preaching, leading worship, teaching, and providing pastoral care. At a small group meeting on July 2nd, Reverend Dawson spoke of his hopes and anticipations in Oman, what he knows about the country, and his excitement to be called to this international ministry. Barry also spoke of his recent assignment in Tokyo, as well as past assignments in Paris, France, and at The Hague in the Netherlands. The Dawson’s son, Brad, is now 25 and works with the Peace Corps in Peru. Evan is 22 and attends Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, where he is pursuing a Master of Fine Arts degree. Bethany is 18 and will be entering Tulane University in New Orleans in August. The Dawsons request that members of the Hill Church pray for the Protestant Church of Oman and for their ministry over the next three years.. ~Jim Ihlenfeld
I would like to thank the congregation for the lovely cards sent to me this past month in honor of my birthday. ~Mary Bishop

Church World Service Mission Work Trip October 3-5, 2011
The dates for our mission trip this year are October 3-5, 2011. We have 2 women planning to attend. It is a worthwhile trip. On the 3rd, we leave early in the morning and take a stop at Fallingwater, where we will tour the house and grounds, and then have lunch at Penn Alps. Then we arrive at New Windsor before dinner. On the 4th and 5th, we work in the SERRV rooms or in the warehouse, sorting incoming items and preparing items to be sent out to
disaster and needy areas—many of them to disaster areas all around the United States. We travel by bus and take with us school kits or health kits made by our circles, plus rolled bandages, quilts, and also good used sheets to be used on hospital beds from our Willing Workers. Contact Kelly Provident or Bea Welch for more information.
WOMEN’S TEA
“THROUGH THE YEARS” On Saturday, September 17 at 1:00 in the afternoon, all women and girls are invited to a Tea. We plan to have a style show featuring the styles of the past century. As we are now celebrating our centennial year, it will be interesting to look back over the last 100 years and enjoy the styles as they have changed. We are requesting that anyone who may have
clothing (dresses, etc.) from the years gone by, and are willing to loan them for the show, please contact Bea Welch at 724-482-4834 or Carolyn Stutz at 724-287-4800. Also, dress forms would be useful for dresses too fragile to be modeled.
SERRV On September 17 and 18 (following worship services) SERRV items will be available for purchase. It’s been a few years since we’ve had these homemade items from artisans in third world countries.
“HOLY ESTROGEN”
FALL WOMEN’S RETREAT This Fall’s Women’s Retreat will again be held in Foxburg and is t itled “Holy Estrogen.” The retreat is lead by Carol McLeod. Join us for food, fun and fellowship in the Lincoln Hall just up from the Inn on Friday, November 4th, and stay in the beautiful Foxburg Inn, or come for the one day program on Saturday, November 5th. Watch the mail for your registration form. Forms are due by August 15th, and are also available on the Member and Visitor Information Bulletin board, or in the Church office.

M.A.D. CAMP 2011
A big thank-you to all the M.A.D. camp participants and helpers that made this year’s presentation of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” a great success! Reprinted from the MAD camp
bulletin is a letter from the Director, Kathy Sawyer:
About two days after MAD Camp 2010 ended, I started to think about the next one. It needed to be something bigger and more involving for this our Centennial Celebration year. As I went through a long list of possibilities, my mind and heart kept coming back to my favorite – “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat.” I thought and prayed about how we could possibly pull this off in the MAD Camp format – one week of five-hour days, given that it is a true Broadway show. I also thought and prayed about how we could possibly pull off something that needed a big cast, big costumes, big stage, big lights, big sound and so many young men to be available and talented enough to sing the very difficult parts. At every turn my mind was laying down obstacles, but my heart was singing a different tune. So, I decided to dream a little bigger, just as Joseph did. I decided to take a leap of faith, trust God and ask many others to leap with me. So many people from this congregation jumped in and helped in hundreds of ways! The cast kept growing. The seamstresses kept stitching. The builders kept building. The singers kept learning notes. What fun…what excitement…what a special week!! Thank you to everyone involved – YOU DID IT. With God anything is possible – so thanks for spending “an hour or two” with all of us who dreamed the dream together!

WORSHIP WITHOUT WALLS
Come join our family of faith, invite a guest or two, and give thanks and worship our Lord in the beauty of his creation during our annual Worship Without Walls service on Sunday, August 28, 2011 at the Oddfellows Shelter at Alameda Park. The Oddfellows shelter is a newer shelter built down the road past the playground, the pool, and the ballfield. You will recognize it by the white railing and its octagon shape. The Praise Team will lead us in song and our annual Church picnic will immediately follow worship. The Nurture Committee asks that you bring a salad or side dish to serve at least 10 people. The committee will provide hot dogs with a choice of toppings, desserts and drinks. If you plan to bring a hot dish, please provide an insulated container as there are no extra plugs to keep items warm. Serving utensils will be provided. Feel free to bring your own lawn chair to use during the worship service. Volunteers are needed to help with both the worship and the picnic—contact Kelly Provident (724-256-5908 or by e-mail at [email protected]) or Marcia McCaw (724-282-0995 or e-mail [email protected]) to help with preparations and cleanup.
RINGING IN THE FALL!
The Joybells and Jubilation Ringers will continue this fall for our second year! Both of these bell choirs will rehearse on a regular basis and are already scheduled to play for various worship services throughout the year. Children and youth do not have to have had experience ringing before….we will review techniques and music reading when we start!
The Joybells are for children entering Grade 3 through 6, and will rehearse Wednesday evenings from 5-5:30pm, beginning Wednesday, September 14. If your child is
younger than Grade 3, but has been a part of the Power Chord Academy, they may also join us!
The Jubilation Ringers is a group for youth Grades 7-12 and will rehearse Wednesday evenings from 5:30-6:00pm. We will begin meeting on September 14. I would like to involve
the youth in the decision making process of music we play, the techniques we learn and perform, and the future of the group! The Jubilation Ringers will also learn to ring solos, duets, and trios, and will often accompany the Chancel Choir when needed. ADULTS! Don’t forget the Memorial Ringers rehearse on Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30. Rehearsals begin on Thursday, August 25th. Be on the look out for more information in the monthly newsletters and mailings home. If you are interested in joining a group or learning more about any of the bell groups, please contact Tommy Walters by calling the church office or by email at [email protected] . ~Tommy Walters

God told Jonah to go to the great city of Ninevah to preach, but Jonah didn't want to go. He tried to run away from God by going in the opposite direction. He got on a ship. God caused a storm to come. It nearly sank the ship. When the men on the ship discovered that it was Jonah's fault, they threw him overboard into the sea, and the sea became calm. God had provided a large fish that swallowed Jonah. Jonah prayed to God from inside the fish and God heard him. He was in the fish for three days and three nights. The fish spit him out onto dry land. God again told him to go and preach to the people of Ninevah, and this time he obeyed. It was a very large city. Jonah told the people that they must repent or they would be destroyed. The people listened and believed. They were sorry for their sins and God forgave them. Jonah was angry. He didn't really care about the people of the city, but God loved and forgave them.

HILL CHURCH: OUR PRESENT – OUR
FUTURE … LIGHTING THE WAY FOR THE
NEXT CENTURY” Phase II of our centennial capital campaign is underway. During Phase II, we expect to repair, refurbish and upgrade our century old Church. Projects to be completed include: replacing flooring in various areas of the
Church, refurbishing our fellowship hall, replacing sanctuary lighting, and upgrading the Church’s electrical system. To date, 61 members of our Hill Church Family of Faith have pledged $120,112.00. $41,359.46 has been collected thus far. These gifts will help us to cover the approximately $140,000 needed to complete these necessary renovations. Hill UP Church Dear Members: Thank you so very much for the beautiful cards, notes, and flowers sent to me in honor of my birthday. I can assure you Marsh has been duly chastised for announcing my birthday and suggesting that since I am no longer driving, I could take to hitch-hiking ~ believe me, that will never happen! Seriously, I have been richly blest to have lived 94 years and to have been a member for 76 years of this loving, friendly congregation. Through many joys and sorrows I can truly attest to the beautiful hymn “Great is Thy Faithfulness Unto Me.” Thanks again, Ida Miller
