"We paint our families, we paint our

pain and illness. We paint our strength

and our medicines, our food and our

faith. We raise questions. We share

bitterness. We show what matters to

us. We paint the virus and we paint our

ways of staying healthy, of keepinghope alive. We paint what gives

meaning to our lives. We tell our

stories. When you look at our paintings,

we want you to listen with your eyes."

    WhAt Are body MAps ?

Body maps are life-size self portraits

which are painted using the outlines

    of bodies. These personal and

    powerful pictures of HIV-positive

    people tell stories about healing,

    stigma, discrimination but also

    support and vitality.

    the MAKinG of the exhibition

Our Positive Bodies An Exhibition of

Body Maps from Africa, Asia and

Europe is all about listening to affected

    people and understanding them.

The pieces on display arose from

collaboration between the Kenyan-German Technical Cooperation health

programme and the Art2Be art therapy

    project since 2006. HIV-positive

    people from Kenya, India and

    Thailand attended workshops where

they painted body maps. A workshop

also took place 2008 in Berlin,

    Germany, with support from the

    Deutsche AIDS-Hilfe e.V. (DAH).

    Workshops take place around the

world to enrich the exhibition with

additional body maps - within the

    framework of the International AIDS

    Conference 2010 in Vienna, too.

The use of art therapy allows simple

facts to be enlivened with personal

    stories and cultural contexts. This

"ability to experience" HIV provides new

insight and promotes the understand-ing of people living with this disease.
