the story of EL PIMPI Since it opened its doors in 1971, people from all walks of life have passed through El Pimpi. Situated on Calle Granada, in the city’s historic centre, the building was once the stables of the ‘Palacio de Buenavista’. Paco Campos & Pepe Cobos, founders of El Pimpi Afterwards the building became a convent and then a dance hall operating under different names. El Pimpi’s reputation grew out of its role as a meeting place for different artists and intellectuals from Malaga’s cultural scene. Its walls have witnessed all types of lively debates and soirées and its hallways have been visited by the most famous personalities of the day on their trips to the city. Many of them have signed the wine barrels in the main hall on their way through, the moment captured forever in the framed photos that have spread across the walls of the narrow passage by the bar and which thousands of visitors pass by every year. Antonio Gala, Miquel Barceló, Picasso’s family, El Cordobés and Antonio Banderas are just some of the many well-known faces that have been recorded for posterity while visiting the bodega. A place that famous journalist Manuel Alcántara called “Malaga’s Sistine Chapel”. The different rooms are named in honour of those greats who have shown the most affection for the bodega, such as The Picasso Loft, The Carmen Thyssen Room, The Antonio Gala Tertulia Room and The Patio of Gloria Fuertes. And where does the name ‘El Pimpi’ come from? The birth of ‘Malaca’ in the 9th century BC was thanks to the Phoenicians, who set up the first fish-processing factories here. They were followed by the Greeks, Romans, Visigoths & Byzantines before the city came under Muslim rule in 721 AD. Arabs, Berbers & Jews lived in Malaga and the Alcazaba citadel was built. After the fall of the Nazari Kingdom, the city converted to Christianity in 1487 under the joint monarchs, Isabel & Ferdinand. Over the next few centuries the city grew, the economy expanded & Malaga’s port became the second busiest in Spain after Barcelona. Iron smelting & textiles were big business in the second half of the 19th Century, along with the wine & sugar trades that spread the city’s fame internationally. The 20th Century brought with it many changes & the city adapted to a new reality. Malaga looks ahead to the 21st Century full of optimism, with many newly-completed infrastructure projects and a fresh focus on culture & tourism. Welcome to our city!
