FROM THE RABBI’S DESK (GUEST POST)My sister in law, Shayna Goldberg, who lives in Alon Shvut near where the boys were kidnapped, shared her reflections upon attending the tragic funeral for Eyal, Naftali and Gil-ad z’l this week. I found her words incredibly powerful, inspirational and worth sharing:

“Are they dead?” Asked my 8 year old Tuesday morning after we gathered our children in our bed and told them that we have “something very sad to tell you.” “Who? Naftali?” asked my 4 year old with big open eyes because of course he knows the names of all three boys. He has been davening for them every day in gan. (My 6 year old can tell you their mothers’ names as well.) Meanwhile our 10 year old who had been to the rally on Sunday night buried his face in the pillow bracing himself to hear the horrible news that he knew was about to be shared. When his worst fears were confirmed he asked us if Hashem has a plan that somehow this is for the good. He himself returned from the rally with new found feelings of closeness to his chiloni counterparts. “They really are a big part of our Am” he told us that night.

My 4 year old wants to know if it was the Romans who killed them. “No”, I tell him “other very very bad people.” But as if he somehow understands the inherent message of Maoz Tzur and V’hi Sheamda he often confuses the “Romans”, the “Mitzrim” and the “Naatzim.” I quietly thank G-d that he has no name for or sense of our current enemies because I don’t want him to develop a fear or a hatred for those he often sees around him. My children have a lot of questions. The same questions we all have. Why? How could this happen? Why would Hashem want this? What should I daven for now in my tefilah ishit because this is what I have been thinking about for the last couple of weeks? We tried to answer what we could and explain to them that we don’t always understand but that our tefilot were not a waste…and then we hugged them and cried…and got them dressed for their first day of camp and sent them on their way. They absorbed the news, processed it each in their own way and then continued on with what they were scheduled to do. Late that night when I returned home from the funeral and went to kiss my kids in their sleep my 10 year old stirred and asked me with his eyes closed “Ema, was it very meaningful?” Yes, I answered.

Yes, it is meaningful to be part of a nation where thousands upon thousands of people came from across the country, walked miles from where their buses unloaded them and then stood hours in the hot sun to be there to comfort and to honor strangers that they had never met.

Yes, it is meaningful that in the heat, squished together, no one pushed, shoved, even raised their voice. People fainted and others rushed to help. Water bottles were shared, snacks were given away from those who brought extra to those in need. Cell phones were passed around when batteries died.

Yes, it is meaningful to sing words of Tehillim and tefila that have been said in every generation by Jews all over the world and feel like somehow we continue to find the strength to have emuna in terrible times.

Yes, it is meaningful to see and hear three bereft fathers recite kaddish together and still be able to praise Hashem’s name after everything they have gone through.

And yes, it is meaningful to be here, to live here, to raise children even right here in Alon Shvut, right now. Where else would I want to be but here? In a country where you feel cared for and loved by and connected to complete strangers because they are your people and together you share a crazy history and a common destiny. Together you cry and daven and sing. Together you hope for a happier time, a better day. And together you know it will come because our morality, our humanity, our decency, our care and kindness and deeply held beliefs and commitments are intact. Our children know it, they feel it, they couldn’t be prouder to be in Israel and to feel a part of this very special people in a very special land.

“Ema, Was

it Very Meaningful?”

BOCA RATON SYNAGOGUE DERECH ERETZ STATEMENTIn the spirit of our mission “Valuing Diversity and Celebrating Unity,” we believe that a community is built on the collective engagement of individuals representing differing perspectives, whether religious, political, or social. As Boca Raton Synagogue is an environment where all of its members and visitors need to feel valued and welcomed, members are required to comport themselves in a manner which reflects mutual respect and a sense of inclusiveness. In our Synagogue, we value debate about pressing issues. This is consistent with the American democratic tradition. Our sages saw the value of arguments conducted L”Shem Shamayim,“ for the sake of heaven, believing that great minds who engage in respectful debate will arrive at better solutions. They valued and welcomed alternate views, as do we. “Derech Eretz,” good and proper conduct, and mutually respectful dialogue are core values of the Synagogue community. These create a “safe place” for inspiration and spiritual growth, the central purpose of the Synagogue. It is a violation of Jewish law and ethics to use harsh language (vitriol) to demonize or to marginalize people with whom one may disagree. Uncivil expression reflects negatively on our Synagogue as well as on the individuals who engage in such behavior. Boca Raton Synagogue expects its members to act and to speak with kindness and sensitivity to others. It is only in this fashion that a strong, vibrant, and harmonious community can be created and maintained. Adherence to this policy is a requirement for membership in good standing at the Boca Raton Synagogue.

In line with our recently published Derech Eretz Statement, we mention some examples of how we can be more sensitive towards others and create an even better community. • Please make an effort to return greetings and wish others a “good Shabbos”.• At the end of your silent Amidah/Shmonai Esrei, please refrain from talking while others around you are still Davening. If you have a Mensch Message you would like us to promote, please email us at [email protected]

PARSHAT BALAK SUMMARYBalak Approaches Bilaam. Balak sent messengers to ask Bilaam, a noted sorcerer, to curse the Jews. Bilaam asked the delegation to stay with him

overnight so that he could ask Hashem whether he could comply with their request. During the night, he was warned not to go with the men, so he sent them away.

A Second Delegation Is Sent To Bilaam. Thinking that a more tempting offer would prove effective, Balak sent a second delegation, a larger and more prestigious one, offering Bilaam great honors and rewards if he would cooperate. Bilaam, obviously motivated by personal greed, asked them to remain until he could again receive guidance from Hashem. This time he was permitted to go, but was told to speak only as Hashem directed him.

Bilaam’s Donkey. During the journey to Balak, Bilaam’s donkey saw an angel with a sword obstructing the path and so it turned aside. The impatient Bilaam struck the animal several times in an attempt to make it proceed. After the donkey protested this undeserved cruelty, Bilaam finally saw the angel for himself and was told that he was at fault by inwardly wanting to accept Balak’s offer. Bilaam offered to return home, but was told to continue on his trip and to speak exactly as Hashem ordered him.

Bilaam’s Speeches. Bilaam: delivered his first speech: “How can I curse the ones that Hashem has not cursed?,” he asked. “Behold, it is a people that lives apart and is not included among other nations.” Angered at Bilaam’s unexpected praise for the Jews, Balak took him to the top of Mount Pisgah, hoping for different results. However, Bilaam once again disappointed Balak, declaring that Hashem would not break his promise of blessing Israel. In response, Balak asked Bilaam to desist from either blessing or cursing the Israelites. Before departing, though, Bilaam foretold Israel’s sovereignty and the doom of Moav, Edom, Amalek, and other enemies of Israel.

The Sin Of The Jews. The women of Moav, advised by Bilaam, tempted the Jews to join in the worship of Ba’al Peor and to participate in idolatry and immorality. Moshe sentenced the sinners to death and a plague developed among the assembly. Pinchas, the son of Elazar the Kohein Gadol, witnessed a flagrant act of immorality between a Midianite woman and a Jew. Zealously defending Hashem’s laws, he executed the evildoers. The plague subsided, but only after 24,000 of the congregation had perished.

Questions1. What was Balak’s status before becoming Moav’s king?2. Why did G-d grant prophecy to the evil Bilaam?3. Why did Balak think Bilaam’s curse would work?4. G-d asked Bilaam, “Who are these men with you?” What did Bilaam deduce from this question?5. How do we know Bilaam hated the Jews more than Balak did?

Answers1. 22:4 - He was a prince of Midian.2. 22:5 - So the other nations couldn’t say, “If we had had prophets, we also would have become righteous.”3. 22:6 - Because Bilaam’s curse had helped Sichon defeat Moav.4. 22:9 - He mistakenly reasoned that G-d isn’t all-knowing.5. 22:11 - Balak wanted only to drive the Jews from the land. Bilaam sought to exterminate them completely.

In order to continue the upkeep of our Eruv, please send a donation as soon as you can. Checks should be made payable to Boca Community Eruv Inc. and sent to Boca Raton Community Eruv Inc 7653 London Lane, Boca Raton, Fl 33433. The Eruv needs your caring support…JUST DO IT!!

LEARNING FOR OUR BOYS All of us continue to be stunned and heartbroken over the news about our three precious boys recently murdered in Israel. The BRS family will be learning the entire Mishnayos in memory of these three holy souls and we hope to make a Siyum for their Shloshim on July 30. Please consider learning with a Chavruta, with your children or by yourself as an Aliyah for their Neshamot. To sign up for the learning, please visit shloshim.org and register your name; once you are registered, search BRS and sign up for the learning.

We are also working on additional opportunities to perform acts of kindness in their memory and we will inform you of them as they are finalized.

THURSDAY NIGHT SCHMOOZE This Thursday night, we have the true privilege to once again host Rabbi Naftali Kaplan, one of the great mussar personalities in Eretz Yisrael today, who will be in Boca delivering the weekly schmooze. Join us at 10:00 pm for 15 minutes of friends, good food, and some words of inspiration.

LATE MA’ARIVLate Ma’ariv at 9:30 pm will be on summer hiatus until further notice.

ASSOCIATE RABBIFor the past four years, our community has been enriched by Rabbi and Rebbetzin Moskowitz’s wonderful leadership, teaching, hospitality and pastoral care. The congregation unanimously voted last year to elevate Rabbi Moskowitz’s title to Associate Rabbi of BRS in recognition of his experience, talents and commitment. We look forward to his continued partnership with Rabbi Goldberg in working to make our community better and better.

ISRAEL UPDATE

SOCIAL ACTIONThe joy of celebrating 238 years of independence as Americans today has been overshadowed by the grief and anguish we feel in the face of the murder of Naftali Frankel, Gilad Shaar, and Eyal Yifrach. We must surely continue to pray for the families of “our boys”. We must also, however, continue to pressure the administration to stop funding the Palestinian Authority unity government which includes Hamas, the terrorist organization that PM Netanyahu said is responsible for their deaths. President Obama has expressed his “deepest condolences” to the families of the slain teenagers. He added, however, “I also urge all parties to refrain from steps that could further destabilize the situation.” It should be up to the Israeli government to determine the appropriate response to this heinous act of

terrorism. Call the White House 202.456.111 or write http://www.whitehouse.gov/ to express support for cutting off funding to the PA unity government.

JONATHAN POLLARDYour letters - the only ray of light in Jonathan’s dreary cell. Write to him today: Jonathan Pollard #09185-016, c/o FCI Butner, P.O. While working as an American civilian intelligence analyst, Pollard has admitted to passing classified information to Israel. Although even his most ardent supporters agree that he was in the wrong and

guilty, the nature and length of his imprisonment is disproportionate and unparalleled. Join a multitude of prominent politicians, officials from the national intelligence world, and the legal world who have called for Pollard’s sentence to be commuted. WARREN WEINSTEINThe 72-year-old Weinstein, Yisrael Yitzchak ben Hannah Faygel, was a consultant for the US Agency for International Development in Pakistan when terrorists broke into his home in 2011 and dragged him away. Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri has since claimed to be holding him. Weinstein made news in a just-released video in which he pleads for President Obama to help. No Jew should ever feel abandoned or forgotten. Please add him to your prayers.

It’s a High Holiday Service unlike any you have attended before–you can even sing along! These interactive services, in which the prayers and customs are fully explained, are designed to provide a meaningful experience to everyone who attends. Your High Holidays will never be the same.

This Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, approximately 2 million American Jews will attend High Holiday Services. Unfortunately, you may not be one of them. Why? Is it because:You do not understand the prayersAlthough highly educated and sophisticated you feel inadequate and illiterate in a synagogue settingThe sermons do not speak to youThe rituals make you feel awkwardFrequently, you leave the synagogue feeling guiltier than before you came so, it’s no wonder why you rarely come in, let alone come back!!

With this in mind, the Boca Raton Jewish Experience (BRJE) and the National Jewish Outreach Program (NJOP) has designed special “High Holiday Beginners Services” for you!Registration is open right now - for more information, please visit our website www.MyJewishExperience.org

Did you ever wonder? Why do we spend so much time learning Torah instead of doing mitzvot? School is a time to learn, but “Jewish School” should be about becoming a good Jew. A good Jew not only studies Torah but observes mitzvot as well. Why is it that in school we spend so much time learning Torah and comparatively so little time performing mitzvot, like acts of chesed? The answer really explains to us the role Torah learning plays in a Jew’s life. When faced with which is more important, Torah learning or performing mitzvot, most would say performing mitzvot. The truth is that the goal of the entire Torah is to understand God. That can only be done by learning. In school we aren’t merely picking up information when we learn, but picking up skills to know how to do learn by ourselves when we don’t have school. Those skills enable us to become perfect Jews.
