GREGG ALLMAN RECEIVES AMERICANA LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

On October 13, the Americana Music Association held its 10th annual awards ceremony, and Gregg Allman was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for

Performance. "When he sings we are given a glimpse of his soul," Keb Mo said when presenting Allman with the award, adding, "Gregg Allman has held the torch for traditional soul and the blues with his music." Allman humbly accepted and thanked his 94-year-old mother as well as the Allman Brothers, "those with us and those not." He later went on to perform "Melissa" to a thunderous

standing ovation.

Earlier this year, Rounder Records released Allman's triumphant and universally

acclaimed Low Country Blues – his first solo record in 14 years which debuted at #5 on Billboard's Top 200.

As a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band and in his own solo career, Allman has long been a gifted natural interpreter of the blues. His soulful and distinctive voice is one of the defining sounds in the history of American music.

Low Country Blues finds him putting his own stamp on songs by some of the blues giants whose work has long informed his own, from Muddy Waters and BB King to Buddy Guy and Magic Sam.

Da Blues is Everywhere !! People from the Nepali capital Kathmandu are swinging in the melody of the Blues music in the 5th Himalayan Blues Festival that kicked off in Kathmandu from Nov. 10. The festival had an

array of world class musicians from different parts of the world including Ireland, Germany, Australia, Russia, Sweden along with bands from Nepal performing in the festival.

The objective is to promote Blues music in Nepal and to integrate the Blues with the roots and

folklore of Nepal as well as to offer a different alternative from those that are generally presented during festival and cultural events,

according to festival administrators.

The festival which originated in 2007 has also been expanded to India promoting Himalayan Blues as an Asian Music festival. The festival,

which is very popular amongst the tourist, is also been supported by the Nepal Tourism Board and by the missions based in Nepal through cultural grants.

Matt “Guitar” Murphy … Still Delivering Murphy (left) trades licks with Cliff Goodwin

Ten years removed from a stroke that had doctors saying he wouldn’t be able to play again, Matt “Guitar” Murphy, 81, is proving age and injury can’t diminish his skill set. Guesting with the Shaboo All Stars at Hartford, Connecticut’s Black Eyed Sally’s in October, Murphy wowed the packed house with his fretwork. Murphy, who added the great guitar work to pianist

Memphis Slim’s 1950s albums, was given numerous opportunities to shine at Connecticut’s premier blues club. He was having such a

great time, in fact, that he even took a turn on the microphone for a portion of Jimmy Reed’s “Baby What You Want Me to Do.” However, for the most part Murphy – who raised his profile exponentially with a featured role in the 1980 “Blues Brothers” movie alongside John

Belushi and Dan Akroyd – stuck to what he does best, playing chords or sweet solos while David Foster and other members of the Shaboo All Stars handled the vocals. In addition, he and Shaboo guitarist Cliff Goodwin engaged in a friendly six-string shoot-out during Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode.” Murphy proved throughout the night that bent notes are merely one aspect of the blues. Amazingly fluid, his playing sometimes hinted at jazz. He also showcased his trademark speed, with some rapid-fire tremolo picking. Murphy’s continued top-notch musicianship is even more impressive given that the stroke he suffered affected

the entire right side of his body. It kept him off stage for some time, but he resumed playing in his hometown of Miami a few years ago. However, his reunion with former band mate James Cotton at last year’s Chicago Blues Festival marked his official return. Murphy’s latest release is titled Last Call at the 40 Watt Club, a 1986 live recording from the 40 Watt Club in

Athens, GA. (-- Excerpt from article by Kirk Lang, 11/7/11, AmericanBluesScene.com)

Preserving a Mississippi Juke Joint

As much as I enjoy griping about the failure to preserve chitlin’ circuit/black history landmarks, I am much happier to learn about a successful restoration. 100 Men Hall in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, was slated for demolition after sustaining damage in Hurricane Katrina. Thanks to the efforts of Jesse and Kerrie Loya, the Hall is back, looking sharp,

too. The structure dates to 1923, but the club that built it goes back to

1894, when it was organized as a debating society. In their by-laws, they stipulated that the organization could host entertainments as a means of raising funds, and the 100 Men Hall became a stop on the

chitlin’ circuit. The spot is once again hosting live entertainment, and you can stay looped via its Facebook presence. The Hall is also recognized with a Mississippi Blues Trail marker: www.msbluestrail.org/_webapp_3958572/100_Men_Hall Article by Preston Lauterbach, 11/10/11, AmericanBluesScene.com Preston Lauterbach is also the author of The Chitlin’ Curcuit and The Road to Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Heaven will have some new songs:

Reflections on Jerry Leiber By: Michael Wolf

Until the 1960’s, to quote Robbie Robertson, “the songwriter was the low man on the totem pole.” However, I have to disagree with Robbie as without great songs, great singers would be howling wordless sounds into the wind. I am an apt musician and singer. However, my

greatest source of pride has always been in the songs that I write. They are reflection and, at times, a diary of my life. It is with great

pride that other artists have covered my songs in live performances and, without jinxing it, some artists are considering recording them.

That is why I was truly saddened to hear about the death of Jerry Leiber, of a heart attack, on August 22. I truly respect great songwriters and Jerry Leiber falls into that rarified atmosphere as a

writer of songs that will live as long as there is existence on this earth. I have covered many Leiber and Stoller songs throughout my career and am considering covering The Coasters “Down in Mexico” as I write this.

First up for your consideration is Jerry Leiber who in partnership with piano player Mike Stoller wrote a litany of songs. Consider just a partial list of artists that have covered their songs: Big Mama Thornton, Charles

Brown, Ruth Brown, Ray Charles, Screaming Jay Hawkins, T-Bone Walker, The Coasters, The Drifters, John Lennon, Brook Benton, Big Joe Turner, Michael McDonald, Johnny Cash and June Carter, Peggy Lee, Maria Muldaur, Hank Snow, and perhaps most famously, Elvis Presley.

Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller were folks like me who got the mojo fever of being influenced by the great artists of African-American music. In particular, they were students of the Blues and wrote some of the most interesting songs of the genre. The first song I heard by Leiber and Stoller was Big Mama Thornton’s version of

“Hound Dog” which I heard at the tender age of five while listening to Nashville’s WLAC (who had a late night Blues show) with the radio under my pillow.

What a great song! “You ain’t nothing but a hound dog, quit snoopin’ around my door.” When I heard Elvis Presley’s version of this tune, I was puzzled. It seemed like The King had altered this gritty Blues song and transformed it into a dog that couldn’t catch a rabbit as opposed to the original version that was about

a shameless gigolo. Jerry Leiber had expressed his disgust with the way his lyrics had been changed by Presley. He did say that the money he and Stoller earned from the sales of the record took a bit of the sting out of their disappointment.

Also for consideration is Ray Charles’ version of a not well known Leiber and Stoller song “The Snow is Falling.” Charles Brown’s version of their great tune “Hard Times” is enough to break your heart. If your heart is in the right place.

Their song “Kansas City” still gets folks’ feet tapping in any club throughout the world. Leiber and Stoller were also great producers and their production of The Drifters “There Goes My Baby” still stirs my lupine heart.

If you want to know more about the lives and career of Leiber and Stoller I recommend a read of the book “Hound Dog – The Leiber and Stoller Autobiography.” This book was written by Leiber and Stoller with David Ritz. Like a lot of David Ritz’s books, it is written in a conversational form. In addition, David Ritz has written great books about B.B. King, Etta James, The Neville Brothers and other great artists. All of Ritz’s books hold a cherished place in my library.

Rest in peace, Jerry. Thank you all of the songs and for the inspiration that you gave to me as a songwriter.

Opening Show: Sam Robinson & the Groove Elaters

Like so many before and so many to come, Sam Robinson's first consistent interac-tion with music came through going to church. Jamming with friends and writing rudimentary songs in high school eventually led to making a living playing the

smoke-filled bars of Winston-Salem and Greensboro. “…When I realized that this was what I wanted to do with my life, I just simply went out and did it anywhere I could," says Robinson. Playing dive bars, bonfires out in the country, frat parties, and opening for many diverse acts including the Roots, Perpetual Groove, and bluesmen Jimmy Thackery and Delbert McClinton were the training. In January 2010, Robinson released Five Gallon Groove featuring Oteil and Kofi Burbridge of Allman Brothers and Derek Trucks Band fame and Grammy-winning Gospel drum-

mer Calvin Napper. The album placed as high as #2 on the Homegrown Music Net-

work radio charts and #3 on the Jambands.com / Relix magazine radio charts.

Sam Robinson, a Winston-Salem native, has established himself as one of the premier guitarists in the Southeast. Like many musicians, he got his start playing anywhere he could get booked. Smoky corners in dimly lit bars and frat parties were typical venues. But it wasn't long before Robinson, 27, found himself gracing

center stage at Hollywood's legendary Roxy Theatre and playing with famed musicians such as Artimus Pyle of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Calvin Napper, a gospel drummer from Winston-Salem.

Robinson's new band, Sam Robinson and the Groove Elaters, is enjoying similar success, with popular live shows and upbeat personalities. "We're not the guys who hang out in the band room away from everybody," said Robinson. "Even the famous people who have come to play with us all hang out. It's more like we're mak-ing friends instead of gaining fans."

Doyle Bramhall Feb. 17, 1949 – Nov. 12, 2011

RIP Doyle Bramhall, Austin Blues Legend – ”Just heard my long time

friend Doyle Bramhall passed away last night in his sleep. We played a lot of

gigs together and had a lot of fun. I learned a lot from Doyle. "Welcome to

the band...They called another blues stringer back home." I will miss you.

RIP. --Jimmie V.

Bramhall & SRV in studio during the recording of “Life by the Drop”

July 22, 2011 at the Miller Outdoor Theatre in Houston

Doyle Bramhall, one of the legendary Austin drummers and a noted

songwriter, passed away the morning of Nov. 12 in his home in Alpine,

TX. He was 62. Unconfirmed reports on Facebook noted that Bramhall

had been under the weather for some time. He had recently had

pneumonia.

While in high school in Irving, TX, Bramhall joined The Chessmen with Jimmie Vaughan. The group

opened for Jimi Hendrix when he played Dallas. In 1969, he moved to Austin and formed Texas

Storm with Jimmie Vaughan. In the 1970s, Bramhall formed The Nightcrawlers with Marc Benno,

which also included Stevie Ray Vaughan on guitar. While in The Nightcrawlers, Bramhall co-wrote

the tune "Dirty Pool," which appeared on Stevie Ray Vaughan's debut album, Texas Flood. He would

write or co-write several other songs for the younger Vaughan, such as "Life By The Drop" from SRV's

The Sky Is Crying album. A solid drummer and a gravelly singer, Bramhall was a huge influence on

SRV’s vocal style.

Bramhall played the drums on the Vaughan Brothers first and final album, Family Style, and in 1994

he released his debut solo record, Bird Nest On the Ground, which included appearances from the

Vaughans and his own son, Doyle Bramhall II.

Bramhall was also a key cog in the blues renaissance that took place in Austin in the mid-70s. That

core group included Tommy Shannon, Angela Streheli, Lou Ann Barton, the Vaughan brothers,

and Benno, coalesced around Antone's, one of the first music venues to open on Sixth Street in

Austin and Austin's most important blues venue at the time.

Barbecue Any Old Time – Blues from the Pit

Various Artists (Old Hat Records)

There's a trifecta of blues music and its perfect accompaniments: “blues, brews and barbecues,” as the old saying goes! What is it about barbecue that makes blues extra-delicious to the ear?

Various enthusiasts of blues and 'cues are featured on “Barbecue Any Old Time: Blues from the Pit,” an appetite-inducing album of “Music for

Carnivores!” As typical with blues, there are plenty of double entendres and sly nods to other appetites. One's mouth will chuckle and/or water as one savors these 24 songs, each one a tasty treasure from before World War II

and the 1950's.

Each remastered song on “Barbecue” is short and sizzling, performed by ravenous mavens such as Barbecue Bob, Bessie Jackson, Brownie McGhee, Bo Carter, Georgia White and Blind Boy Fuller. Instrumentation

variously and gloriously includes the banjo, violin, 6 and 12 string guitars, steel guitar, piano, celesta, jug, harmonica, cornet, trombone, trumpet, clarinet, saxophone, string bass, brass bass, tambourine, washboard and drums. The CD comes with a 20-page, full color booklet that chronicles the spread of Blues and barbecue across America. It is complete with rare photographs, artist and song descriptions, and a full discography.

In the early 20th century, millions of Southerners moved from hard

-luck farms to the cities of the North and West. Jazz, blues and barbecue would eventually sweep the nation. In the Midwest, blues from the Mississippi Delta traveled Highway 61 to Memphis, then on to the Windy City, while the Piedmont blues of Georgia and the Carolinas rode the rails to New York City.

Low Down and Tore Up

The Duke Robillard Band (Stony Plain Records)

Wow! This is the Duke Robillard I experienced in 1984 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania – although at that time I believe it was a three-piece power trio that had energy out the ass!

Well, this isn’t a trio but it has the same ass-kickin’ energy, with the addition of

long-time band member Bruce Bears on keys and the amazing Sax Gordon on,

what else, sax. The recording techniques draw from old-school, sparse mike placement and modern recording equipment that will give you an idea how the masters might sound today. Gut Bucket with Caviar!! Take that, and how much younger Duke sounds vocally – so strong that I think he discovered a long lost

bottle of water from Juan Ponce De Leon’s fountain!!

The songs Duke picks out are mostly ones he heard as a youth; you know, the ones that sent him in his initial

gritty musical direction. Most are not songs that have become hits as covers over the years, but ones that deserve re-discovery. Simply put, Duke is a master at every style of guitar and on this one shows his early rough side with youthful abandonment. Put it on and turn it up!

This CD may be one of a kind! Pre-War Blues (1927-1942) with styles

including Country Blues, Jazz,

local blues calendar, and a variety of blues-related items of interest.

CBS is proud to call The Double Door Inn home. The Double Door Inn, winner of the 1994 Keeping the Blues Alive award from The Blues Foundation, is located at 1218 Charlottetowne Ave., Charlotte, NC (704-376-1446) Over the past 35 years, the DDI’s stage lights have shined on Willie Dixon, Koko Taylor, Lil’ Ed & the Blues Imperials, Marcia Ball, Saffire ~ The Uppity Blues Women, Lonnie Brooks, Eddy “the Chief” Clearwater, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Luther Allison, just to name a few. (And that doesn’t even include the countless local and regional performers who otherwise would not have had a stage to stand on.) Thank you, Double Door, for all your support for live blues, zydeco, reggae, Americana, and most of all, your support of the Charlotte Blues Society!
