Message

Warm greetings to all!

On behalf of the Committee on Conventions of the Philippine College of Surgeons, I am privileged to invite you to our 75th Annual PCS Clinical Congress to be held at the EDSA Shangri-La Hotel, Mandaluyong City on December 1-4, 2019. With the theme “GAME CHANGERS IN SURGERY”, our Committee on Continuing Surgical Education has prepared a well-balanced program focusing on recent advances in Surgery. Several well-known foreign guest speakers who are the “big guns” in surgery have confirmed their participation and are going to share their expertise and experiences. Taking off from the ratification of our By-Laws last May, we will formally launch our three new commissions: Commission on Cancer; Commission on Trauma and

Injury Care; and the Commission on Surgery in Underserved Regions for Education. These will bring our College to greater heights and serve as a formidable political voice in the country. Expect also a fun-filled Fellowship Night for all of us to enjoy. Renew and reinforce your friendships with your surgeon colleagues while relishing the sumptuous dinner prepared especially for you. Congratulations to our Vice President Jose Antonio M. Salud as the Overall Convention Chair and to the various committees for working so hard to put this all together.

See you at the EDSA Shangri-La Hotel!

GEORGE G. LIM, MD, FPCS, FRCSEd President

Message

“In a world full of game players, the only way to set yourself apart is to be a game changer” – Matshona Dhliwayo It is that time of the year again when surgeons around the country come together for continuing surgical educational activities, sharing of best practices and fellowship during the culminating activity of the Philippine College of Surgeons through the support of the Philippine College of Surgeons Foundation. Game Changers in Surgery, the theme for this 75th Annual Clinical Congress from December 1-4, 2019, will whet one’s appetite for the latest information in various surgical topics presented by top international and local speakers. I also suggest for one and all not to miss the

fellowship night as it promises to entertain. Join us and get ahead of the game!!

General Objective: At the end of the convention, the participants will be able to have a deeper understanding of the concepts/techniques that changed practice in the different fields of surgery

Specific Objectives: After the different sessions, the participants should be able to:

a) Apply what they have learned in their clinical practice to provide the best

outcomes

b) Describe how the concepts and techniques changed and will change the landscape of surgical practice at present and in the years to come

Using the Program Planner The planner has been designed to facilitate your selection of programs so that you can take advantage of all that the Congress has to offer. It is divided into the following sections:

- Scientific Program - General Information - Registration Information - Meetings and Events - Hotel Information

The Plenary Sessions, Luncheon Satellite Symposium, Postgraduate Courses, General Sessions, Research Fora, Master Class Surgery, Cine Clinics, Workshops, and Specialty Sessions are described individually with some details. In the program at a glance, all the sessions and activities from Day 1 to Day 4 are listed chronologically. FACULTY DISCLOSURE STATEMENTS The College’s Committee on Continuing Surgical Education has a conflict of interest policy that requires the Congress faculty to disclose any real or apparent commercial or financial affiliations related to the content of their presentations/materials. It is not assumed that these financial interests or affiliations will have an adverse impact on faculty presentations. They are simply noted here to fully inform the participants. CANCELLATION OF SESSIONS The Philippine College of Surgeons reserves the right to change or cancel any of the scientific sessions listed in this program planner.

Modern Manila Tour for RETURNING VISITORS and FIRST TIME VISITORS

The "other side" of Manila is a modern metropolis that is gaining increasing importance as a major artery in the financial flow of the Pacific. Your tour begins with a drive through the Cultural Center of the Philippines Complex - a complex that lies on reclaimed land situated along Roxas Boulevard - entirely reminiscent of the glory years of the Marcoses. A drive through the complex starts with a glance of the fountain-adorned Cultural Center of the Philippines, the country’s seat of cultural awareness. Then move on to the Philippine International Convention Center and the Folk Arts Theater - favorite venues for both local and international events, concerts and performances. Adjacent to these structures are the Coconut Palace, a building made mostly of coconut materials, and the Sofitel Philippine Plaza, a deluxe hotel with a magnificent view of the Manila Bay. Proceed to Makati, the financial and commercial center of Manila. You will visit the famous Ayala Museum, whose core historical collections are the sixty handcrafted dioramas that chronicle the rich tapestry of Philippine anthropology. It also features a one-of-a-kind boat gallery showcasing miniatures of some of the watercraft that have contributed to the development of Philippine maritime trade and the colonial economy. Archaeological and ethnographic objects from the country’s northern and southern communities complement the historical collection. The Fine Arts collection features important works by three painters considered pioneers in Philippine art namely, Juan Luna, Fernando Amorsolo and Fernando Zobel. Your last stop is at the American Memorial Cemetery - perhaps the largest and most beautiful Armed Forces resting place outside continental United States. Departure from Edsa Shangri-La Hotel - 8:30 AM Estimated time of arrival at hotel - 4:30 PM Tour Itinerary: Depart hotel via Shaw Boulevard Rolling tour of CCP Complex – CCP/PICC/Folk Arts Theater/Coconut Palace

Drive through Mall of Asia Complex Guided visit to Ayala Museum (Time allotted for this museum: 2 hours) Lunch at Abe – Serendra, Bonifacio Global City Guided visit of American Memorial Cemetery Shopping in Greenhills Return to hotel

Important Reminder: Not included on a Monday tour is the visit to Ayala Museum because this museum is closed every Monday being maintenance day.

INVIGORATING TAGAYTAY (approximately 8 hours)

Your scenic 1-hour and 30-minute drive to Tagaytay will take you through the countryside passing through coastal villages, rice fields, fruit orchards and coconut plantations. Continue on to Taal Vista Hotel where you can view the smallest known volcano in the world, the Taal Volcano. The volcano has to be seen to be believed, but is best described as a volcano within a lake within a larger volcano. After lunch at Taal Vista Hotel, enjoy some free time to take in Tagaytay’s natural beautiful views, dramatic terrain and cool mountain climate. Included in this tour is a visit to the famous St. Joseph Parish Church popularly known as Las Piñas Church which houses the world renowned "Bamboo Organ”. In November of 2003, the Bamboo Organ was given the recognition as "Philippine National Treasure" by the National Museum of the Philippines being the only 19th century Bamboo Organ in the country that has survived and is still functioning. This unique musical instrument is composed of 1,031 pipes, and 902 of which are made out of bamboo while the rest are metal. Package inclusions: Transfers by private air-conditioned vehicle Buffet lunch at Taal Vista Hotel Visit to St. Joseph Parish (Bamboo Organ) Services of a licensed English-speaking guide Not included: Drinks during lunch Gratuities for the local guide and driver Other incidental expenses that might be incurred by the guest/s for the duration of the tour

The tour starts with a visit to historic Rizal Park, where the remains of our country’s national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, lie within the cornerstone of Rizal Monument. Tour heads on to the old walled city of Intramuros built during the Spanish colonial period. The first stop is Fort Santiago which served as headquarters of the military might of the Spanish, American and Japanese colonizers until its destruction in 1945. Tour then proceeds past the San Agustin Church, the oldest structure in the country which dates back to 1571. The next stop is Casa Manila, a reconstructed 19th century mansion replete with 16th to 19th century furniture and furnishings. The last stop is Baluarte de San Diego, the only battery directly facing the sea.
