United Way of the Bradford Area, Inc.

Dear Friends,This past year was definitely a year of transition for the United Way of the Bradford Area, Inc. As we thanked our outgoing President, David Krantz (now Immediate Past President) for his lead-ership over the past two years and said goodbye to our former Executive Director, Mandi Wilton-Davis, I took on the role as President and Paige LaBrozzi became our new Executive Director, all in the midst of Campaign season.

We had a phenomenal Campaign Team along with an outstanding interim office staff that supported our efforts and were able to make certain the UWBA’s 2018 Campaign was the number one focus. “Be the Change” was our campaign theme and because we had so many community members who support “change”, we were able to surpass our Bradford and Port Allegany goals. Our Smethport campaign fell short but we remain hopeful to turn things around in the coming year.

The UWBA implemented 2-1-1, (a com-prehensive information and referral system) in 2017 and has continued to support its efforts. This 24/7 service helps serve residents of McKean County. 2-1-1 aligns with our UWBA mission of improv-ing the lives in the areas we serve. It ben-efits any resident seeking assistance and it improves the efficacy of our non-profit service delivery system.

In May, the organization contracted Dr. Pauline Hoffman, Dean of Graduate Studies at St. Bonaventure University, to assist the UWBA staff and Board in developing a Mar-ket Research Analysis to determine the de-mographic details of our current donor base and investigate the demographic of new donors. Dr. Hoffman concluded her findings in July and provided the UWBA Board and Staff with recommendations to include in our decision-making going forward in our future planning process.

Through the work of our interim President, Kelly Case, along with our Campaign Chair, Theresa Funk and under the guidance of Ja-son Blatchley (BAHS Advisor), we relaunched the Student United Way at BAHS. These students volunteered their time and efforts to support our Newspaper Day, Business Blitz, Pizza Hut Fundraiser, Corn Hole Tour-nament and Soup Lunch. We are extremely excited that we were able to reignite this group of leaders again and are very excited about the impact these students will make on our community!

There are so many wonderful things hap-pening at the United Way of the Bradford Area, Inc. and this year we look forward to introducing some exciting new changes. We would like to thank all of you who continue to support the UWBA and our Mission. Whether you Give, Advocate, or Volunteer (or maybe all three), you play a key role in directly improving the lives of others and

United Way of the Bradford Area, Inc.

for that, we are grateful. It is because of you, we are able to provide funds to the Bradford, Smethport and Port Allegany communities and their programs to make lasting positive change in people’s lives.

Please continue to help us “Be the Change” and to always LIVE UNITED!

A Statement by Evergreen Elm“With the United Way funding, we at Evergreen Elm are able to offer a Sup-portive Living Program to some of those neighbors and friends. Some of them may now have a place to live, their medication is monitored, food is in their bellies, or the support and guidance they need to function successfully as a member of the community has been granted. The United Way has also made it possible for Evergreen Elm to implement a successful Therapeutic Aquatics Program for our Clients and Individuals showing a significant improvement to their mental and physical stability. Your contribution to the United Way helps Evergreen Elm, Inc. and organizations like us make an impact on the lives of the people you see in your day to day lives. We envision Bradford as a place where all thrive. United Way is reaching their goals and accelerating solutions because of you. Thank you for choosing to LIVE UNITED!”

A Statement by The Family Center

“The United Way works to support families in obtaining evidenced-based early learning

opportunities for children by supporting Parents as Teachers, a home-based early

learning program, and the Bradford Family Center’s Parent – Child group. “

Individual Donor Testimony “Why do you give to the United Way?”

“We contribute to the United Way of the Bradford Area because it strength-ens our community. Bradford is truly fortunate in that it is home to a wide variety of non-profit organizations that provide vital support and services to people of all ages and backgrounds, but in order to function at their optimal level, these organizations need the funding that United Way provides. Know-ing that United Way is ‘neighbors helping neighbors’, supporting it each year provides us with a tremendous sense of personal satisfaction knowing that our contributions have made a positive difference in the lives of others. And for that we are grateful, and it is why we continue to support the United Way of the Bradford Area each year.

Individual Donor Testimony “Why do you give to the United Way?”

“I have taught in the Smethport area for 40 years and have contribut-ed to the United Way all of those years. I continue to contribute to the United Way because I know that Smethport is a small community and we all work together to support each other.”

Lawrence Trulick, Smethport, PA

Statement From McKean County Historical Society“The McKean County Historical Society, located in Smethport, Penn-sylvania, is a volunteer organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the stories of McKean County. One of the purposes of the Society is to promote and encourage the interest of our community in its history and to also share that history with visitors. This is achieved through the museum and public programs sponsored by the Society. The Society is a nonprofit organization. The funding received from United Way is used to help us conserve artifacts so they can be used to provide displays, and humanities programs to tell our story.”

Statement from Hamlin Memorial Library“Hamlin Memorial Library uses United Way funds primarily for pro-gramming for our area youth. We use the funds for promotional items for our Summer Reading Program, such as bags, bookmarks, posters and t-shirts. The UW also under-writes entertaining and educational performers for the library, such as Jeffini the Magician and Sciencetell-ers. We also use the funding for our monthly Family Nights, which run October–May. The most popular of these is Make A Plate Night in Octo-ber, with 30-40 families attending. Each family receives one free plate that they create themselves, under-written by United Way. It’s safe to say that our programming would be severely curtailed without Unit-ed Way funding. It is an integral component of the library’s budget and allows us to provide services to our valued patrons.“

Statement From S.W. Smith Memorial Public Library

“The Port Allegany Campaign for the United Way sponsors family engagement

and early literacy in our community by funding Story Hour at the S.W. Smith

Memorial Public Library. Children and adults learn through play stations and

group activities at our library!”

Statement From Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services“Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services receive funding from the United Way of the Bradford Area to help with our prevention efforts in the area. The generous contributions from the community allow us to provide evidence- based programs that promote positive life skills in our schools. We are also able to provide education to the community groups. Without the support of the United Way, we would not be able to impact the large number of people we do.“

Individual Donor Testimony “Why do you give to the United Way?”

We give to the United Way because we feel strongly about support-ing organizations who help those right here in our community. Keeping donation money in our area means that those we know and care about can continue to take advantage of programs offered lo-cally, which is important to us.

211The year 2018 was the second year the United Way of the Bradford Area, Inc., helped to bring 2-1-1 to McKean County. For those unfamiliar, 2-1-1 is a comprehensive information and referral system that aids McKean County residents in finding services to meet their needs. How it works is, an individual can call 2-1-1, 24/7, and is connected toa person who then searches adatabase of agencies to bestconnect the individual to anagency able to meet their need(s).McKean County residents usingthe service can also text theirneed and zip code to 898-211or log on to pa211nw.org andsearch independently. Includedis statistical information on theuse of 2-1-1 in McKean County inthe last year, provided by 2-1-1Northwest.
