2030; an increase of more than 270% from itscurrent value of AUS $570.4 million.

Nature-based and adventure tourism are clearopportunities that leverage the region’s naturalassets, proximity to Sydney (3hr 20min) andinternational air access into Newcastle (1hr20min).

Nature–based Tourism is often called out as thefastest growing Tourism segment globally, hasinherently higher–value per visitor than moremainstream forms of Tourism, and is notablymore resilient to the periodic downturns thatimpact Tourism due to economic, societal, health or environmental reasons… the overallpotential for nature–based, eco and/oradventure Tourism to help grow a country orregion’s Tourism sector, whilst simultaneouslyreducing the negative economic, environmentaland societal impact of the more mainstreamtypes of Tourism, is clearly significant.Over the past two decades, both Nature andAdventure–based Tourism have developed tobe part of the fastest–growing segments withinthe Tourism industry. As far back as 2004, forexample, Nature–based Tourism was estimatedto be growing three times faster than theTourism industry as a whole.Looking ahead to 2035, the upper estimatedrange of US $101 billion would make theNature/ Adventure– based Tourism sectorlarger than Australia’s current combined

international and domestic Tourism industries. To put it mildly, there is clearly potentialavailable to be unlocked … a study in 2009 byTourism Research Australia found that aninternational Nature–based Tourist spent AUS$5,898 per trip compared to the averageinternational tourist spend of AUS $3,614 pertrip – a 63% increase.

Not surprisingly the natural environment andrural setting (of the township of Gloucester inparticular) are primary motivators for visiting.Lead activities tend to be outdoors focused:

• Visiting national parks 21% (+12pts vs.NSW state average of 9%)

• Bushwalks/rainforest walks 31% (+21ptsvs. NSW state average of 10%)

• General sightseeing 28% (+3pts vs. NSWstate average of 25%).

‘The Gloucester Region ... (will look to) ...maximise the benefits of sustainable Tourismgrowth, whilst retaining its distinct ruralcharacter and appeal. The key outcome is ...(intended to be) ... an improved quality andnumber of Tourism facilities, products andoperators ... with the overall aim of GloucesterTourism being to drive greater numbers of thetargeted market segments to visit Gloucesterand to encourage longer stays and higherspend...’

Location - Gloucester Region.

The Gloucester / Barrington Tops region isrenowned both domestically andinternationally as one of Australia’s leadingNature and Adventure-based Tourismregions. With the MidCoast Councils’ recentdecision to rebrand the regionsamalgamated tourism offering to “BarringtonCoast”, Barrington Outdoor AdventureCentre (BOAC) is perfectly positioned toleverage the regions external marketingdrive.

The Gloucester Region - home to the famousBarrington Tops… is located in theBarrington Coast and Upper Hunter regionsof New South Wales, covers an area of2,950 sq. kms and is home to a population ofaround 5,061 15 (4,877 in the 2011 Census).

It is a rural community located in a fertilevalley bordered by the Bucketts and MograniRanges to the East and West. The Regionstretches from the Stratford in the south;through Gloucester and Barrington; with the

National Parks of Barrington Tops,Curracabundi and Woko making up theNorth and West of the Region. The main population is centred onGloucester… and is surrounded by almost3,000 sq. kms of rugged terrain incorporatingfarmland, hills, forests, rivers and streams.A number of important river systems dissectthe Region from west to east, rising in theBarrington Tops (a world heritage listedwilderness area that dominates the Tourismoffering of the Region) and flowing eastwardto the sea via the Manning River. The threeprincipal rivers are the Avon, Barrington andGloucester.

The rainforests of Barrington Tops NationalPark are of international significance; formingpart of the Gondwana Rainforests ofAustralia World Heritage Area listed by theNational Trust since 1975 as a declared‘significant heritage landscape’ stretchingfrom Booral in the south to Barrington in thenorth. Carved out of ancient volcanic flows, the park rises from near sea level to over

1500m and protects one of the largesttemperate rainforests in mainlandAustralia, along with a host of diversehabitats.

Growth Potential of the Regions NatureBased & Adventure Tourism sector.

The NSW Government has recentlyannounced a record $193 millioninvestment in tourism and major eventsin its 2017-18 State Budget. It includes acommitment to regional NSW: “Visitationto rural and regional areas will continueto be driven by a record $43 millionfunding commitment over four yearsannounced in 2016 to drive innovativeindustry reforms such as theestablishment of six DestinationNetworks across NSW.”

[Which means that there is a] potentialto grow the Barrington Coast TourismIndustry to over AUS $1.55 billion by
