From Our President...

Dear Members,

It is hard to believe that my 2 years as president of this chapter is coming to an end.

I have enjoyed getting to know so many new people as I attended the many

wonderful events and exciting study groups over the last 2 years. I want to thank my

fantastic board and the wonderful members of our chapter for making the last 2

years so successful and enjoyable.

At the moment I am sitting in front of a Mosque in Kuala Lumpur. Kuala Lumpur has

a very diverse culture. It is made up of Indians, Chinese, Moslems and Christians.

They are very integrated and get along well. There seems to be a lot of respect for

each other and acceptance of each others differences. The one thing that really

bothered me is the fact that the only place Malaysians can not go is to Israel. If we

could open that door, how terrific it would be. It reminds me of Brandeis University,

where all of these nationalities co-exist together. If only the world could learn to

get along so well. Brandeis is helping to set the stage for academic excellence

and acceptance of diversity.

Brandeis is also a leader in sharing scientific research with other organizations so

that they can all work together. Our Sustaining the Mind campaign helps to support

other advances in Alzheimer's research, Parkinson's Disease research with the

Michael J Fox foundation and ALS research. It is another example of people

working together for a common cause. As universities, organizations and

foundations share information, think of the strength of combining forces. As we

learn to accept information from others, perhaps it will help us to respect them as

people and accept their differences as well.

I want to remind all of you that it is not too late to make a donation in support of

our Sustaining the Mind Campaign. Please send a check to me as soon as possible,

so that our chapter can make a significant contribution for the campaign.

(Rookie Shifrin 8116 Lone Tree Glen Lakewood Ranch, Fl 34202)

All of the money goes directly to the University to support their endeavors in

research for neuro-degenerative diseases.

Have a wonderful summer and be ready for new exciting study groups and

activities in the fall. Bulletins will be mailed to your summer address, unless you let

Ellen Klein know of any changes.

BNC MEMBER SURVEY - STUDY GROUPS

Thank you for taking the time to fill in this form. We appreciate your input and will use the information for planning the

Study Groups for next season.

Name ____________________________________________________________________

Email Address______________________________________________________________

What are your three favorite Study Groups?

Do you have any ideas for new Study Groups?______________________________________

Many people sign up for a Study Group and then do not attend. This can be a problem when planning for the size of the room

or the preparation time spent by the Leader or Speaker. (For instance, 40 people might register, 28 attend the first session, 19

attend the second session, 6 people attend the third session, etc.) We know that everyone gets busier as the season progresses,

plans change, you have unexpected company and so on.

Do you have any suggestions that might help to resolve this issue?

Would you help us by volunteering to be a Registrar? ______Yes _______No

If yes, is there a particular group?_________________________________________

Study Group Survey

We are happy to see many BNC members attending and enjoying our BNC Study

Groups. How lucky we are to have the opportunity to learn about so many different

topics and interesting people! As always, we welcome any suggestions so we continue

to improve our offerings.

Plans for summer Study Groups include:

∗ Reel Discussion June 25th, July 23rd, Aug 27th

∗ Knit Group July 9th and 16th (You will make a Sarasota Wave Scarf)

∗ Mystery Novels June 17th and Aug 19th

Watch for the email blast later in March to let you know how to sign up for these groups.

Our apologies for any inconvenience by members who attempted to attend GREAT

AMERICAN MUSICALS on February 21st. Everyone who was registered for this group re-

ceived an email canceling the session, but it was a problem if you decided to walk-in.

Since plans and commitments often change, we always want you to feel comfortable if

you decide to attend a group for which you have not previously registered. To avoid this

situation in the future, we will send an email blast to the entire membership if any session

of a Study Group needs to be canceled.

Diminishing attendance with each session of a Study Group continues to be a concern.

Again, we know that plans and commitments often change or you have unexpected

company (Doesn’t everyone want to visit Sarasota in February????). However, please

remember that the leaders and presenters spend a lot of preparation time and we

always want them to have good attendance.

A special thank you to all our Presenters, Leaders and Registrars!

Your contribution to our successful year is appreciated.

Book and Author LuncheonBook and Author Luncheon

We enjoyed a wonderful lunch and presentation at University Park Country Club on February 8th.

Karen R. Koenig, LCSW, M.ED., gave a very humorous and informative talk on Nice Girls Finish Fat,

Put Yourself First and Change Your Eating Habits Forever.

Toby Halpern and Florence Korchin, Chairpersons.

General Meeting General Meeting January 4th

Bravo, we did it! A heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped put our January General Meeting

together. We started with the creative flyer, followed by our timely emails, publicity ,bulletin,

registration workers, photographer and so very many generous hostesses. Together we worked

to create a great day for Brandeis and Ron McCarty, our guest speaker, who was impressed by

such a wonderful turnout. And, in turn, we were impressed with his presentation! A great day

was had by all.

ART IN THE AFTERNOON ART IN THE AFTERNOON January 8th

BNC members continue the Special Events Series of Art in the Afternoon on January 8 at Cafe Baci

with a stunning performance by Roxanne Fay as Gala Dali, beloved wife of Salvatore Dali.

The one act play touches on the secrets, fears, promises and lies of Dali's wife and most revered sub-

ject, as told through her fascinating relationship with the tarot cards, allowing Gala to speak without

apology.

Seventy members thrilled to her portrayal of this strong character after which we adjourned down-

stairs to the restaurant and enjoyed a great lunch of salad and Italian specialties. A great camarade-

rie enhanced our dramatic and culinary arts experience.

Janet Tolbert

We assembled for our second Art in the Afternoon at Cafe Baci on Tues., Feb. 12. John Goodman

gave an illuminating presentation of Richard Rodgers life and his music. We learned that early in

Rodgers career as a composer he collaborated with Lorenz Hart and they had many familiar hits,

such as "Babes in Arms" and the "Boys From Syracuse". Many well known songs came from this part-

nership such as "Falling in Love With Love" and "Here in my Arms". Later, Rodgers partnered with Oscar

Hammerstein and they produced some of Broadways favorite musicals, like "Carousel", South Pacific"

and "Oklahoma". John then played songs from many of these plays as we all hummed along with the

familiar tunes. It brought back memories to all of us of years past when we had seen these musicals or

heard these songs on the radio. After some questions and answers, we adjourned to have a delicious

lunch downstairs in the restaurant. It was another enjoyable couple of hours of history, music and

food. Ann

Can you take good pictures and transfer them digitally to the computer to be sent to some-

one? We are looking for several people who attend our events and can do this job. You may

only be called upon several times a year and only if you are planning to attend the event that

requires some pictures. If we have a pool of photographers, no one person will have to be re-

sponsible for photographing all events. Please email Rookie Shifrin at [email protected] or Ann

Friedman at [email protected] if you can help with this.

Donors to the Sarasota Chapter of the Brandeis National Committees's UNIVERSITY ON

WHEELS were hosted at a Pre Party at the lovely home of Helen and Jerry Spindler.

Our speaker, Dr. Don Katz, not only delighted the 36 attendees with his charm and

humor, he also regaled the group with his saxophone playing.

Chairs Fran Spring and Shari Paler declared the evening a success.

PUNTA GORDA ARCHITECTURE TOUR

For the 2nd year in a row a group of 55 happy BNC travelers took an Architecture and History tour

on Friday January 11 with Docent Harold Bubil, Architect Editor for Sarasota Herald Tribune, down

the road to Punta Gorda.

We learned of the deep history of this town an hour away from Sarasota where history is honored

and preserved. We learned of the extraordinary effort of the town after Hurricane Charley did its

devastation in 2004 and of the heroic efforts of restoration and rebuilding.

We toured the historic 1912 Freeman House, we walked the Historic District, we shopped at Fisher-

man's Village, and lunched elegantly at Opus Restaurant. During lunch we were further educated

by the President of the Chamber of Commerce with a slide presentation of the before and after

hurricane restoration. Once again Harold Bubil delighted and educated all of us.
