I had the pleasure of meeting the very charming Peter James at the opening of the Henfield Tennis Club pavilion in June this year when he spoke about his new book due to be released in October. It’s a ghost story, based in a big haunted house just outside Henfield. It seemed a perfect opportunity for us to feature Peter in the October issue of BN5 magazine and give local readers an insight into Peter’s writing and love of Sussex.

Peter is a big supporter of the local community and we know he’s hugely popular with many fans in the village. If you’ve ever read his books you’ll recognise local place names and even local characters, the new book will be no exception. Steyning Bookshop have arranged a book signing, talk and Q&A with Peter at Wickwoods on 6 October, you’ll be able to collect your own copy of The House On Cold Hill before the official release date.

The great work of the Henfield Community Partnership is being celebrated on page 32, their achievements are numerous and have made a great difference to the whole village. Thank you to all those who have worked so hard, and congratulations on reaching 10 years, here’s to the next ten! Particular thanks go to Tony Jackson who has led the group and worked so tirelessly, he has been pivotal to HCP’s success. We wish you well as you move on to work with other village organisations.

Enjoy beautiful Sussex as the seasons change and please stay in touch with your news and events.

THE KNIGHTS CELEBRATE 50 YEARS OF FAMILY CRICKETFifty years ago on the first Sunday in August 1965 the Knight family met on the north side of Henfield Common, and after a picnic, played cricket. The seven brothers and two sisters had been brought up at East House on the Common. The first Sunday in August was chosen because in those days the August Bank Holiday was held on the first Monday, so no there was no work the day after the cricket match! The first bat was made by my father (James Knight) from a scrap plank of timber and he also made some stumps, which are still in use today. In this 50th year we enjoyed the usual fine weather on 2 August when a 25-a-side cricket match was played after the picnic was over. We are now looking forward to 7 August 2016 when we shall all meet again on Henfield Common.Fred J Knight

SAMMY FOSTER TO JOIN WEST END HIT BILLY ELLIOT MUSICALWe are delighted to announce that Sammy Foster will join the West End cast of the internationally award-winning Billy Elliot the Musical at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London. Sammy is scheduled to join the show in September to perform as Sharon Percy alongside the central character of Billy Elliot in Mrs Wilkinson’s ballet class. Sammy is thrilled to re-joining the cast that she previously danced with as the smallest ballet girl four years ago when she was 9. She said: “I’m very excited to be back on the Victoria Palace Stage. It’s such a powerful show… I always wanted to come back as one of the older girls.”

BLACK FOREST AUTHOR TO VISIT FULKINGLeonard Holder, the author of ‘Selina of Sussex 1818-1886’, is to give a talk starting at 2.30pm in Fulking Village Hall on the afternoon of Thursday 29 October. The book is a religiously inspired historical novel. The heroine is Selina Page (from whom the author is descended) who was born in Ripe during the period when the Wesleyan evangelical awakening of the eighteenth century was still being strongly felt throughout Sussex. The book is full of interesting facts about the countryside, farming, wildlife, and rural customs in nineteenth century Sussex. The author was born in Brighton but today he lives in the Black Forest in Germany. He will speak about the book and the local history that underlies it. Copies will be available and there will be an opportunity to chat with the author over tea and biscuits after the talk. For more information see http://fulking.net/selenaofsussex/

HENFIELD PARISH COUNCIL NEWSI find it hard to believe that it’s almost a year since I took up my post as Henfield Parish Clerk – where did that time go? There have been many projects to tackle during that period, such as the major tree surgery works carried out at the end of last year

to ensure that our footpaths remain safe to walk along, 33 new street lighting columns erected throughout the village to replace the old worn-out versions and the new High Street Christmas lights which received a favorable response. In addition, work on the Henfield Neighbourhood Plan has continued apace and by the time you read this report the result of the village referendum will be known, which will affect major planning decisions throughout the village for the next 20 years. A series of drainage works to reduce flooding on the A281 across the Common has been completed, thanks to the funding provided by West Sussex County Council under its Operation Watershed project. There was also the small matter of the District and Parish Council elections in May, the Summer Fayre in July and the installation of grit bins throughout the village to assist with inclement winter weather. A busy year for the Parish Council, but one in which a lot has been achieved! A vacancy has arisen on Henfield Parish Council due to the resignation of Mrs Elizabeth Taylor and Horsham District Council has approved the co-option of a Councillor. Firstly let me take this opportunity to thank Liz for her excellent work on the Council and in particular for Chairing the Plans Advisory Committee for the past four years and her invaluable assistance helping to produce the Henfield Neighbourhood Plan. If you are interested in applying for the position of Councillor on Henfield Parish Council, please either email the office ([email protected]) or drop us a brief letter, stating why you think you should be considered for the role. ST PETER’S OPEN WEEKAn exciting school year has started at St Peter’s and we have welcomed our new children into our two Reception classes. One of the realities of school life is that even before the autumn leaves have even fallen from the trees, we are already planning for our new Reception intake for next September! If you have a child who will be 4 before 1 September 2016, then you will soon be needing to consider where you would like your child to start their primary education. If you are considering applying for a place with us, then you are welcome to come along to one of our open week tours so you can meet the staff and children and hear about our plans for the future. Please phone Alice in our school office for a convenient appointment – 01273 492447, or alternatively email on [email protected]. Our open week runs from Monday 9 November – Friday 13 November. We look forward to welcoming you.

HENFIELD BROWNIES GO TO GUERNSEY (EVENTUALLY!) On Thursday 13 August, 22 Brownies, 10 Adults and a toddler set off for Guernsey. Unfortunately our inbound plane was struck by lightning, resulting in a 10-hour delay to our flight! We must praise the Brownies for how well behaved they were during the delay. Heavy rain on Friday curtailed some of our plans, but we did manage to make candles, visit a German underground bunker, take a boat trip to Herm, enjoy a campfire with some local Guides and Leaders, visit Castle Cornet and join in their Fete D’Etai celebrations, go rock pooling and visit The Little Chapel on the way back to the airport. Our journey back was uneventful and before we knew it, we were home. We owe a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who contributed during our fundraising events that helped to give us a wonderful Brownie holiday.Natalie Denning

CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATIONA certificate of appreciation was today presented to local green grocer Jeremy for his long-standing support of Henfield and District Lions Club in their charitable fundraising efforts. This summer Jeremy supplied coconuts for our popular coconut shy for all three local village fairs, enabling us to raise well over £600 which we use to support local charities and good causes.Lion David Pryor commented: “Jeremy has been incredibly generous is supplying us with coconuts and we really wanted to show our gratitude in a tangible way.” Jeremy said: “All of us at Jeremy’s are proud to receive this certificate from the Lions.

We enjoy supporting them when we can. They work so hard for great causes, both national and local and raise money that really helps the village. Many thanks to David and all the Henfield Lions.”David Pryor

HENFIELD HAVEN NEWSAn open day held recently at Henfield Haven has marked another step forward in plans to hand it over to the community. The day was for local organisations, health workers and other groups to visit the centre and find out more about the plans for the building and the services to be offered. Agreement to transfer running of the centre is at an advanced stage and it is planned that the formal handover will take place before the end of 2015. The professional care staff at the Haven will be employed by Impact Initiatives, a Sussex charity who have been selected by the Partnership to run the day-to-day services.

As the Henfield Community Partnership has set up a Community Interest Company called Henfield Social Enterprise to manage assets such as the Haven on behalf of the community. ALL CHANGE AT WHITE MISCHIEFWhite Mischief has been trading here in Henfield for the past 10 years. We have successfully dressed over 3,000 brides from around the country, hundreds of bridesmaids, prom girls, mothers-of-the-bride-and-groom and lovely ladies that dance. In order to maintain our excellent reputation, which spreads both nationally and internationally, moving forward we will be concentrating on our core business of bridal gowns, bridesmaid and bridal accessories. In September (subject to planning) we will be consolidating the business back into one shop and the smaller shop (that we affectionately named Night Mischief), will become available to rent for another exciting business to open up in Henfield. Here’s to the next 10 years!Christine Marchant

FAMILY APPLE DAYWe would like to thank everyone who came along to support Henfield Club and Stokes on 29 August to raise money for the Youth Club. The chocolate apples were a great success and many parents will have had wet clothes to dry-out from the apple bobbing. The event would not have been possible without all those who generously donated prizes or their time to make the day a great success. In particular we would like to thank Swains, the BP Guild and all the helpers from the Youth Club and Henfield Club without whom the day could not have happened. John Rodriguez

YOUTH CLUB CELEBRATIONSHenfield youth club were very proud to have celebrated their 10-year anniversary in their new building in Deer park with around 200 friends, family, old and new members and supporters on 18 July. During the event Debbie took the opportunity to thank the Henfield Lions for their recent fundraising event and to officially open the newly revamped DJ box that was purchased with the money raised. The committee and staff thanked Henfield and all the local groups and individuals for their past and continued support. Without the support of our lovely village, the Youth Club would not be the thriving environment that it is. We hope that it is a service we can offer long into the future.Youth club is open during school term time: Mondays 7- 8.30 pm for school years 5,6,7 and 8; Tuesdays 6-7.30pm for ages 8-11 years; and Thursdays 7.30–9.30 pm for ages 11-19 years. 3 PEAKS CHALLENGE: WE MADE IT! What can I say… that was one of the hardest challenges we have ever faced. The whole team really pushed themselves and the sense of achievement after Snowden was huge… we made it! We were so proud of ourselves individually and as a team – we worked brilliantly together and the fact that we have raised just over £7,200 for the Spinal Injuries Association is the cherry on the cake!

HENFIELD RUGBY CLUBWatching rugby during the World Cup, we are reminded that it is surprising that Henfield, with a population of 5,000, does not have a rugby club. Anecdotal research indicates that there are substantial numbers of players, ex-players and other supporters from ages 16 to 86 plus who may be interested in forming a club and / or supporters club. Are you one of those people?Henfield Leisure Centre has provisionally agreed

to act as a base and they will host a meeting on Tuesday 27 October at 8pm to discuss the idea. I shall be interested in your presence and your ideas at the meeting. If you are unable to attend or wish to put your ideas forward before this, please email me at [email protected] or call 01273 660213. Tom Asquith

FIND OUT ABOUT CARE It’s West Sussex Care Month this October so why not take some time to think about planning for care in the future? Planning for our future care isn’t something most us think about until it affects a loved one or until we need to consider for ourselves, but it may be useful to know what information and advice is available for when you do need support.

West Sussex Care Month is all about helping you to access information and advice to help you make the right choices. Whether you receive care, are caring for someone (including someone who has just come out of hospital), needing equipment, are a carer that needs support or would like a career in care, there is information that could help you. Look out for West Sussex Care Month during October, visit www.westussexconnecttosupport.org or contact 01243 642121 for more information.

CHANC’S NEWS It’s Autumn already, and the Chanctonbury Ring Morris Men have finished leaping around outside pubs for the Summer, and are heading towards their winter practice at the Woodmancote Village Hall. This can be as much fun as the summer and helped by a pint or two at The Royal Oak at Wineham afterwards. They welcome new men to come and talk to them on Wednesday nights from 8-10pm, whether potential Morris Dancers or musicians.

But there are still a few ‘outings’ for the men. On Saturday 3 October, they’ll be dancing ‘clog’ at the Harvey’s Brewery in Lewes helping to ‘roll-out’ the Old Ale from 12pm. Then on Saturday 17 October they’re dancing Cotswold at ‘Folk at the Oak’ from 12pm at The Royal Oak Wineham: come and try some Cotswold ‘stepping’ and stick clashing with them there. They are holding a ‘clogging’ workshop (£10) at Washington Village Hall on Saturday 24 October. You can also see the team dancing Clog in the Lewes Parade on Thursday 5 November. If you are a local man interested in trying ‘Morris’ then contact their Bagman Clive at [email protected] or call 01273 494377. Also take a look at Chanctonbury Ring Morris Men on Facebook and please ‘like’ us.

WANTED: POPPY COLLECTORS IN HENFIELDHenfield is a generous village, each year we punch well above our national weight in donations for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. Collections take place during the fortnight prior to Remembrance on 11 November. Last year the village raised an admirable £5,531: an increase on the 2013 figure by over £600!But sadly, many of the regular Henfield collectors are finding their duties a little more onerous as each year passes. The Henfield British Legion is looking for a few extra collectors to help. It only

takes a couple of hours to complete a door-to-door collection area: you can collect while you walk your dog, or even enlist the companionship of your children. The door-to-door collection areas available are: St Peter’s Meadow Estate; Henfield High Street; Springhills; The Hooks; London Road; Flower Farm Close; and Parsonage Road. If you can help you will be supporting all our ex-Service personnel at a time when they need us the most. Mike Morgan is the Poppy Appeal organiser and you can contact him at [email protected] or 01273 492134. Thank you in advance.Emma Osman

RAISING MONEY FOR CHARITY THROUGH BRIDGEThe Sussex County Bridge Contract Association recently held a charity fund raising event across the County, raising £375 that was donated to Henfield’s local charity ‘Know Dementia’. Our grateful thanks go to local resident Julia Simpson a key figure on the Committee of the Sussex Bridge Association for nominating ‘Know Dementia’ to be the recipients of the award. The County treasurer David Dalpin expressed his delight that the amount has gone to a worthy charity and was also a fitting tribute to the memory of the late Pamela Kelly. Pamela was a founder member of the Henfield Duplicate Bridge Society and held the key position of Congress Secretary for 25 years. During her time in that office she achieved unparalleled increases of teams competing in this popular annual event. Sadly in 2011 Pam was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and she died last year.Julie Kersey (on behalf of my family)

An Evening with Peter James Tuesday 6th October, 7.30 pm

Wickwoods Country Club, Albourne, BN6 9DY. Tickets £15.00 includes a copy of

his latest novel The House On Cold Hill .

Page 22: BN5 October 15

Set in a Georgian mansion in a fictional village on the outskirts of Henfield, Peter James’s latest novel, The House On Cold Hill, is likely to induce chills of

fear down the spines of those brave enough to turn the pages. This is his first full-length ghost story for some years, a break from the Detective Superintendent Roy Grace books that have made him internationally famous. I had the opportunity to chat to Peter and find out what his new book is all about (no spoilers, we promise!) as well as have a chat about his passions for motor sports, food, animals and Sussex. I was most interested to hear that The House On Cold Hill was set near Henfield, did that mean that the house he currently lives in just outside Henfield is haunted? “No, we’ve not had any visitations yet! The haunted house I lived in was in Ditchling, but I’ve set the novel in a similar house just outside Henfield. A few local spots do feature; for example

the family in the novel visit the Henfield curry-house! I think local people will recognise some familiar landmarks,” said Peter.Peter is a prolific and hugely successful writer, with book sales topping 16 million worldwide and 15 books published in the last ten years. They’ve been translated into 36 different languages and as well as achieving critical acclaim they are incredibly commercial, achieving eight consecutive Sunday Times best-seller number-ones. By far his most popular character is Roy Grace, the Sussex Police Inspector who uses all means to solve the most gruesome and intriguing crimes. The books are intensely gripping with edge-of-your-seat roller-coaster plot lines, and the added thrill of spotting local place names and characters if you’re familiar with the Brighton area.Peter was born in Brighton and educated at Charterhouse School before attending Ravensbourne Art School to study film. He’s had a wide range of jobs and his first was as assistant to Jack Tinker, film critic for the Evening Argus. He has since been involved in writing or producing at least 26 films, not to mention his involvement with stage plays. I asked him who his dream actor would be to represent the young Roy Grace. “I think the wonderful Tom Hardy would play the younger Roy Grace perfectly, he’s a great actor. I would choose either Dominic West or Dougray Scott for the more mature DS Grace. We are currently casting for the stage version of A Perfect Murder, which is touring next year starring Shane Richie and Jessie Wallace.”

ARE YOU READY TO BE SPOOKED?

Page 23: BN5 October 15

When I speak with him he’s about to race at Goodwood Revival in a 1965 BMW 1800 Tisa - a vehicle which he was driving when it was shunted from behind at 90mph, resulting in several broken ribs. Undaunted, Peter had the vehicle re-built and continues to race. His wife, Lara, now holds a racing licence and appears to be rather competent - giving Peter a real run for his money!Peter is incredibly generous with his time and has supported many local causes, endorsing the Henfield Leisure Centre renovation project as well as being guest of honour to cut the ribbon at the Henfield Tennis Club opening earlier this year. He’s prolific in his support and patronage of local charities, including Brighton and Hove Samaritans and The Martlett’s Hospice. During his opening speech at the Henfield Tennis Club he mentioned how convenient the new pavilion patio would have been as a hiding place for a body. I asked him if he had discovered any other suitable crime venues for Roy Grace to investigate. Peter said, “Well, I am making a visit to a local car recycling business in Small Dole, but I don’t want to give anything away!”If you’re in the mood for mystery and brave enough to attempt sleep after tucking into bed with this particular good read, then don’t miss the House On Cold Hill. I have a feeling you will be turning the pages well into the witching hours. Just watch out for that ghostly shadow behind the door…Emma OsmanThe House On Cold Hill is officially released on 8 October alongside the paperback of You Are Dead. Peter will be attending a launch, book signing and Q&A on 7.30pm 6 October at Wickwoods Country Club, BN5 9DY hosted by Steyning Book Shop (01903 812062). Tickets are £15, including a signed hard-back copy of The House On Cold Hill (rrp £20).

Peter’s interest in the supernatural comes from some terrifying moments he experienced when he lived in that haunted house in Ditchling. Initially, he had dismissed tales of mysterious happenings as local fable and hearsay. However, over time, the house (which was once a monastery and stood on the site of a Roman villa) began to tell its secrets with increasingly regular appearances of the three resident ghosts. Many of the occurrences had no rational explanation, including white lights, sudden chills in the rooms and a visitation by a hooded monk who was witnessed by more than one person. Once, one of his recently published books, which had been displayed on a table in the atrium of the house spontaneously combusted; coincidence or a trick of the light on a nearby glass paperweight? Possibly, but Peter believes his ethereal visitors had a hand in the proceedings. Peter had been planning to write a novel based on this spectral home for some time. His Roy Grace character frequently uses mediums for his crime-solving and Peter’s own beliefs in the supernatural make these story lines credible and believable to readers. He is hugely supportive of Sussex Police, who he believes to be a truly unique force. “We’ve had a very enlightened series of Chief Constables at Sussex, ones who really ‘get’ the libertarian style of Brighton. The city is unique in having the combination of a dark and historic criminal underbelly whilst enjoying annual events such as Pride and the Naked Bike Ride. Where else would you experience such things! Policing in Brighton requires a different approach and Sussex Police achieve a great balance. I have witnessed policing as part of my research in many different cities all over the world and we are incredibly lucky in Sussex. In New York I witnessed a cop shouting at a poor elderly lady who was struggling to reverse into a parking space – quite a different approach!”Peter is an avid tennis player and keeps fit with his regular countryside runs. He loves to take his beloved dogs, Spook (a rather excitable labradoodle) and Oscar (a rescue dog named after Oscar Wilde) for long walks around the area. His favourite walk is part of the South Downs Way, across Devil’s Dyke towards Truleigh Hill with its magnificent views across Sussex. In one of his books a body is found at Springs Smoked Salmon in Edburton, the perfect crime scene, and DS Grace visits The Shepherd and Dog in Fulking. The area is an endless source of inspiration for his novels. His favourite local country restaurant is the Ginger Fox, just outside Henfield. Peter is a real food lover and one of his pleasures is introducing people to new and enjoyable restaurants through his regular review column in Sussex Life. “My very favourite Brighton restaurant has to be English’s. I once dined with a career bank robber there! It’s consistently good, so old-fashioned and quintessentially Brighton, an enjoyment from the moment you walk through the door.”Another pleasure is vintage cars, which he races.

House of HealingExtraordinary treatment <> Remarkable results

FREE initial consultation

Well, in the early 90’s, with a deteriorating back condition and no solutions, I sought help by

training as an aromatherapist. It didn’t solve my back problem but it did give me a fulfilling career path for which I soon discovered quite a talent. As the years passed, I gradually added to my skills and knowledge base, first with counseling training, then a long three years becoming an Alexander teacher, followed by chakra therapy, hypnotherapy and Theta Healing. I’m currently still training and will qualify as a psychotherapist in two years time. After that, who knows…….?

As you can imagine, with all that experience behind me, my treatments will be nothing run-of-the-mill. I have developed a unique way of using all these various approaches in a fluid, integrated fusion to give you the best, most effective healing experience possible. And your preferences and wishes are at the top of the priority list.

In fact, my whole approach is a duet, a dialogue between myself and you, my client. Whilst I offer deep support, insight

Hello friends, My name is Jill. Welcome to my House –

and expert facilitation, my therapy is never imposed. I seek your involvement and input every step of the way. And in this way, you discover your own powers of self-healing, a sense of control over your own fate. This in itself, is enough to change your life forever.

You can tell, I’m sure, that I’m offering no quick fix (although I have witnessed miracles happen). But neither need the healing process be that lengthy. 10 or 12 sessions sees many people firmly on their road to freedom, after which, occasional visits keeps them from straying.

I am in the business of empowering people. I don’t want to keep you coming back, I want to set you free. If there is something in your life from which you would like to be free, then come and talk to me with no obligation. Perhaps our paths will join for a while. I do hope so.

You will be most welcome in my House – the House of Healing.

We’ve all been asked this when we meet someone for the first time. Our work – our career - is an incredibly important part of most adult’s lives. To many it’s central to their identity. Apart from paying the bills, people can derive an enormous sense of fulfillment from their work. Yet, many people are not completely satisfied with their career and want to change, but feel stuck. I work with people who are facing a range of career issues.

It could be about mid-life career change and feeling like you want something more from work; wanting to do something different or do something with more meaning, but aren’t sure what it is and how to go about exploring options.

I also work with clients who want to discuss issues that span both work and personal life domains. It could be that you’re juggling with work-life balance, a concept that many employers promote. But the concept of balance suggests that there is equal weighting to each part. Trying to manage your career, alongside your partner’s and bringing up children. These are significant challenges and it can sometimes feel that there is no balance.

I think work-life integration is a better way of looking at it. Given that many of us are tethered to the office through technology, sometimes it’s hard to switch off from work and it impinges on our home life. Discussing options can be helpful to come up with other strategies and redress the balance.

As a Career Strategist, I work with people thinking about some of their most important career decisions. This could be about talking through how you might make changes in your current role to move to the next level, or starting to explore a change in direction.

Having worked in the careers field for over 20 years as a headhunter, outplacement consultant and career coach I offer expert guidance and pragmatic solutions to get more from your career. If you’re interested in having a no-obligation introductory discussion then please get in touch.

The ingredients of this success include: the commitment and hard work of many volunteers; building a strong and supportive relationship with the Parish Council; listening to what people want for Henfield; good communication; and doing things that are achievable, not pursuing pipe dreams.Of these, close working with the Parish Council is paramount. Having regular reports, good communication and the active involvement of three Parish Councillors has ensured an excellent relationship, without which the HCP could not have achieved so much. The 2011-15 Community Action Plan was put together jointly by the HCP and Parish Council and a new joint plan covering the next four years will be issued shortly. This successful relationship is widely recognised as the exemplar for others to follow.Early on, it was important for the HCP to establish credibility and early successes included:

 Producing a series of leaflets describing circular walks around Henfield;

 Obtaining a grant from Viridor to help build a skateboard park which was opened in 2007;

Investigating services for older people and carers which led to issuing a booklet listing these services, since updated a number of times; and

Launching a community minibus service in 2007, with grants totalling around £140,000, offering dial-a-ride, outings and shopping trips, using a new minibus adapted for disabled use (the responsibility for this was transferred to Bluebird Community Transport in 2010).

Although the HCP started off as an association this was not a workable structure when we came

Why does Henfield have a Community Partnership? It began following the issue of an action plan for Henfield in December 2004: having a plan is no

use unless things happen as a result. So after discus-sions with the Parish Council it was agreed to set up a Community Partnership (using a model that had been adopted elsewhere in West Sussex), designed to bring together all the key stakeholders interested in the future of Henfield. So in July 2005, the Henfield Community Partnership (HCP) was formed with volunteers and representatives from the three levels of local government on its management committee. As I had been involved in the latter stage of preparing the action plan I agreed to become the HCP’s first Chairman. Ten years later I stepped down from that role at our recent AGM, handing over the reins to Carol Eastwood.Looking back, none of the founder members imagined that we would have been able to bring about so many benefits to our community; something for everyone, whether young or old, in business or visiting, able bodied or disabled.

to start the minibus service. So in October 2006 we became a not for profit company limited by guarantee. This also made the HCP eligible for grants from a greater range of funders. Many of you may remember the launch of Henfield’s plastic bag free campaign in May 2008 which led to a large reduction in usage, and hence CO2 savings. So please continue to bring your own bags and re-use as much as possible.Keeping Henfield sustainable has been a key aim. We produced the Parish Design Statement in 2008, much of which has been incorporated into the recent Henfield Neighbourhood Plan. We supported the Parish Council in opposing speculative developments such as those on land east of Manor Close and in West End Lane. To help maintain a vibrant local economy we got grants for mapboards and High Street fingerposts and developed a visitor strategy that led to six recently published itineraries. Maintaining free car parking is also important, so for many years we have helped carry out parking surveys to analyse usage.A key action in the 2011-15 plan was to investigate ways of improving the provision of local information. This led to the launch in October 2012 of the Henfield Hub website funded by a grant from WSCC. Recognised as a leader in its field, the site has attracted over 75,000 visitors and received a

national award. An annual meeting run by the HCP’s action for older people’s group resulted in setting up a computer club to give help to those not familiar with computers. Our biggest achievement to date though is obtaining the agreement in March this year from WSCC to its Day Centre in Hewitts being transferred as a community asset under a long term lease. It will be re-opened shortly, under the name ‘Henfield Haven’ to provide a wide range of services. More information about what is planned can be found on the Hub and elsewhere. You can learn more about what the HCP has done at www.henfieldhub.com/hcp. For my part I feel privileged to have helped the Partnership achieve so much since 2005, working with many talented and dedicated volun-teers. Hopefully, you will feel inspired to get involved in the HCP’s second decade.Tony Jackson

At the beginning of the eighteenth century in the mountains of the Ardeche in France, a missionary priest, Father Peter Vigne, travelled the towns and

villages telling people of God’s great love for them. At Boucieu-le-Roi a few young women helped him in his work and on 30 November 1715, seven of them asked Father Vigne to give them a religious habit and a Rule of Life – our Congregation was born. The Sisters would teach the young, care for the poor and the sick, and pray especially before the Blessed Sacrament. The Sisters increased rapidly in numbers and before Father Vigne’s death in 1740, there were already 100 of them working throughout the towns and villages. But a dark period was soon to engulf France. With the coming of the French Revolution in 1789 the Sisters were dispersed and their property was confiscated. One Sister, Sister Ste. Croix, narrowly escaped the guillotine with the death of Robespierre himself. With the goodwill of Napoleon Bonaparte (we shall not mention Waterloo!) the Sisters regrouped and numbers increased rapidly. They opened houses in Italy and came to London in 1874. However, before the end of the nineteenth century a dark period was again faced by the Congregation in France. Anti-clerical laws legislated for the confiscation of property and the closing of schools. So many Sisters were left homeless that the Mother General of the time did not know where to place them.A young American widow, Mrs Maling-Wynch, had connections with a large castle-like house near Bramber. Her brother-in-law was leasing the property. She was a great friend of our French

Sisters and suggested that some of those thrown out from their schools should come to this house, The Towers, and establish a school. On 10 October 1903, five little French girls accompanied by the Sisters arrived at Bramber station and walked to Upper Beeding. They were our first Towers Sisters and pupils. Subsequently Mrs Maling Wynch became a Sister of the Blessed Sacrament herself; she had bought The Towers and gave the property to the Congregation. We have been here ever since that day, walking the paths of Father Vigne, telling young people of the love God has for them and educating them to take their place in the world.Sister Mary Andrew, The Towers Convent School

which won the National Operatic and Dramatic Association accolade of excellence. Since then he has been looking forward to doing some more directing and commented that: “this play offers a great opportunity to work with a really talented group of people both on and behind stage”.The Weir will be at The Henfield Hall from Thursday 15 to Saturday 17 October 2015, with performances starting at 7.45pm. The production is sponsored by The Henfield Club who also kindly allowed their bar to be used for the publicity photographs. Tickets are available from Henfield Furnishings on the High Street (01273 490080) from Monday 28 September priced £10 and £18.Martin Love Henfield Theatre Company presents four or five produc-tions each year including plays, musicals and pantos at The Henfield Hall, and in alternate years, an open-air production in one of the charming gardens in or around the village. It has almost two hundred members who get involved to varying degrees on stage or in one of the many support roles such as set building, front-of-house, publicity or back-stage. The members also enjoy regular social activities which make it one of the largest and most active societies in the village. See www.hen-fieldtheatrecompany.com for more information.

The Henfield Theatre Company invites you to join them in a rural Irish pub for a drink with a few locals who have some very absorbing tales to tell.

Actually, apart from typical pub banter, the men in ques-tion are particularly trying to impress a young woman who has recently moved from Dublin. The Weir, a wonderfully atmospheric, one act play written by Conor McPherson in 1997, is to be performed by the company, at the Henfield Hall from 15 October. The play was first produced for the Royal Court in 1997 and it won the Olivier Award for Best New Play 1997-98. It was also voted by the National Theatre as one of the most significant plays of the twentieth century and, more recently, was similarly described by a Daily Telegraph critic as “one of the best plays of the past century”. Meanwhile, the men in the pub on whom we are eavesdropping, are telling more and more inventive stories until the wind is completely taken out of their sails by what the young woman has to tell them…The Weir is the name of the pub in which the play is set but there is also an interesting analogy between a channel for water and the way that the bar acts as a means of channelling the stories that might otherwise be lost. This is a superb play containing comedy, pathos, tragedy, a hint of the supernatural and some ripe language consistent with the setting! The director, Paul Woodcock, has been an active member of the Henfield Theatre Company for 12 years and, having appeared on stage in many productions, is a well-known face in the village. He directed the highly acclaimed production of The Ragged Trousered Philanthropist, in 2012,

If you are self-employed, taking time off work with a musculoskeletal problem can have a devastating effect on you and your family’s financial security, so getting back to work as quickly as possible is essential. That can seem impossible when you’re in pain and unable to complete your usual daily activities, but movement really helps. The Work Foundation recommends that early intervention is key to recovery, hastening your return to a normal, healthy lifestyle and limiting the negative psychological effects of an extended period of sick leave. How our osteopaths can help;• Fast access – our osteopaths are usually able to see you within a couple of days of seeking an appointment. As osteopaths are primary healthcare professionals you don’t need to be referred by a GP unless you are seeking NHS funded treatment or your health insurance provider insists that you see a GP first.• Treatment and advice – once they have assessed your condition an osteopath will usually begin treatment straight away. They can also provide advice on how to avoid making the condition worse or re-injuring yourself.• Inexpensive treatment – Many MSDs can be treated by osteopaths over a few visits. Treatment costs just £50/£40 per session, which compared to loss of earnings or productivity, is a worthwhile

investment to help you return to work promptly.• Fit notes – A fit note provides your employer with advice on what they can do to help an employee return safely to work. This may include adjustments to working conditions, such as reduced hours, a different work station set up, or recommending avoiding activities that may prevent or slow recovery, heavy lifting for example. Osteopaths are able to issue fit notes which will give employers this expert advice.• Onward referral – With your permission, we are able to share information about your health with other healthcare professionals, such as your GP. If your condition requires the intervention of another expert, we can provide a letter of referral detailing the diagnosis and any treatment that we have been able to provide, which may help you more rapidly get the help you need to return to health.

When it comes to challenges there’s one Henfield lady who has a bit of an addiction. Meet Tracey Prescott; serial fundraiser, fitness junkie and

champion of great charities and local causes. When Tracey celebrated her 50th birthday back in April, she thought she’d like to mark the occasion with an extra-special challenge. Aided and abetted by her friend Adrian Hillman, she came up with a plan – to complete 500 miles in her 50th year. Each of those 500 miles must be part of an organised fundraising event, either on foot or by bike. So far, she’s completed 285 miles, and I’d bet almost all of them with a big grin on her face! She’s donned a cycle helmet to complete 184 miles by bike (the London to Brighton night bike ride, the Brighton mountain-biking Big Dog and the Prudential Surrey 100) and she’s run a Rat Race and a Tough Mudder with the associated ‘fun’ challenges of scramble nets, water obstacles and even electric shocks. Her most difficult event to date has been the Oxfam & Ghurka ‘Trail Walker’ – when she, along with two friends, walked 62 miles across the South Downs within an incredible 22 hours – the time limit was 30 hours. All these challenges raise money for great individual causes, but her target is to generate

£2,500 for two causes close to her heart. One is the Macmillan Cancer Support charity, in memory of a dear friend, Gary Dunk, who lost his fight with cancer in January this year. Gary has inspired Tracey with his positive attitude that anything is possible with the support of friends. The other is Henfield Leisure Centre. Tracey is a great advocate of fitness for all and the team at HLC has helped to train her in advance of her various challenges. “The Leisure Centre is a brilliant place, everyone forgets they are actually a charity,” said Tracey. “It takes a huge amount of money to keep the equipment up to date and provide all the classes and children’s clubs – so they really need our support. They’re in the middle of their big renovation project to add a soft play area, a new studio and a café to the building. Exciting times!”Five years ago it was a different story. Tracey was struggling with back pain and told that she shouldn’t run. But with physio and a good personal trainer (her sister Sammy!) she managed to strengthen her back and enjoys a high level of fitness today. Back in 2012 she took part in ‘777’ – where a team of runners ran 7 marathons a day for seven days, in aid of Henfield Leisure Centre and Clic Sargent for childhood cancer. “Staying fit

has really turned my life around. I’ve achieved things I’d never have thought possible and most of all made the most incredible friends. Anything is possible with the right people around you! I really do have Sammy to thank for all the motivation and help she’s given me,” said Tracey. If you’d like to help Tracey reach her target please go to www.uk.virginmoneygiving.com/777fundraisingIf you’d like someone to do a challenge with, Tracey is always looking for people to run / walk / cycle with! The pensions arena is forever changing, in this article I cover a few of the more recent changes.Tapered Annual Allowance - Those with

‘adjusted income’ over £150,000 will have their Annual Allowance (AA) cut from the 2016/17 Tax Year, creating a ‘get it while you can’ pension funding window this Tax Year. The standard £40,000 AA will be cut by £1 for every £2 of ‘adjusted income’ over £150,000 in a Tax Year. The maximum AA reduction is £30,000, giving those with income of £210,000 or above, a £10,000 AA. Carry forward of unused AA will still be available, but only the balance of the reduced AA can be carried forward from any year where a reduced AA applied.Adjusted Income - The ‘adjusted income’ of £150,000 test is broadly the total of:

Your income (without deducting your own pension contributions); plus

The value of any personal contributions made via net pay route, rather than relief at source

The value of any employer pension contributions made on your behalf.

The objective of this terminology is to stop people using Salary Sacrifice as a way of circumventing the Tapered Annual Allowance restrictions. Salary Sacrifice remains a tax efficient way to contribute though. The reduced AA won’t however apply where an individual’s income for the Tax Year plus the value of any income given up for an employer pension contribution via a salary sacrifice arrangement entered into after Budget Day (8 July 2015), is £110,000 or less.Pension Input Periods - to be realigned to the Tax Year - As a small step towards re-simplification of the pension rules, from 6 April 2016 all pension input periods (PIPs) will be aligned to the Tax Year. And it won’t be possible to change them. For the pre-alignment Tax Year (ie. the pre-Budget PIPs that either ended early on 8 July due to the Budget changes or had already ended earlier in 15/16 (ie. ended between 6 April 2015 and 7 July 2015)) there is an Annual Allowance (AA) of £80,000, plus carry forward from 12/13, 13/14 and 14/15. For the post-alignment Tax Year (9 July 2015 to 5 April 2016) there is a zero AA, but up to £40,000 unused from the £80,000 can be brought forward

Pensions update(plus any remaining carry forward from the years above). So someone who has had no pension funding/accrual for the 2015/16 Tax Year before 9 July 2015 has £40,000 to bring forward from the ‘pre-alignment Tax Year’ – plus any available carry forward from 12/13, 13/14 and 14/15. So they are in the same position as they would have been before the Budget. Anyone who has already had pension funding in PIPs ending between 6 April 2015 and 8 July 2015 can use any balance of the £80,000 (to a maximum of £40,000) in the period 9 July 2015 to 5 April 2016. Lifetime Allowance - An important factor to remember is that the Pensions Lifetime Allowance is still reducing to £1,000,000 in April 2016. Opportunities still exist to retain as much as a £1.5m Lifetime Allowance, although if/when announced, options to protect £1.25m should be more widely achievable. Alternatives to Pensions - Beyond April 2016, high earners will still want tax efficient ways to invest.Contributions to ISAs are limited to £15,240 each Tax Year. They are now fully transferable between cash and stocks/shares. ISAs can also now be left to a spouse/civil partner on death. There is no tax relief on input, but no tax on withdrawal and no age restrictions. Simplicity is a benefit.Enterprise Investment Schemes (EIS) and Venture Capital Trusts (VCT) are higher risk than Pensions or ISAs, but with significant tax efficiencies. 30% Income Tax relief, with proceeds free of Capital Gains Tax. Potential to roll over maturing investments for further tax relief. These are more complex and higher risk, with a vast number of products on the market, so taking independent financial advice is vital. This article has been written to provide you with general information only and does not attempt to give you advice on any particular investment or to recommend any particular investment to you. No action should be taken in reliance on this article, without consulting your professional adviser. EISs and VCTs are high risk investments and there may be no market for the shares, should you wish to dispose of them. You may lose your capital.
