Welcome to our October issue. Our cover image shows the very talented cast of Terra Nova, which is being performed at the Henfield Hall from 16-18 October. We went ‘behind the scenes’ to find out how HTC and director Trevor Hodgson were tackling the challenge of staging such an emotional and historically significant play. Read about it on page 26 and don’t leave it too late to get your tickets!

We decided to tackle the subject of dementia in this issue, but had reservations about how we were going to get the important information across in an interesting and engaging way. We were fortunate to meet two local couples who are so positive, so inspiring and so energetic that they put a whole new light on the subject. We hope you enjoy reading their stories on page 38.

Next issue will be our 100th! We’re looking forward to celebrating everything great about our village - and we have decided to produce a very special 100th edition Henfield 2015 calendar, with important local dates in a colourful & usable format. We aim to raise lots of money for HART in the process - BN5 are funding the production of the calendar and have some generous local businesses supporting it. EVERY PENNY of the £6 purchase price goes directly to HART. We hope you’ll support our aims to make our 100th issue a very special one and say a big ‘thank you’ to our lifesaving village charity at the same time.

Enjoy October.

HENFIELD NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN UPDATEIt was encouraging that the two public meetings, held in August, at which presentations were made about sites for possible development and inclusion in the Neighbourhood Plan (NP), were so well attended. These sites had either been put forward by landown-ers or (in the case of brownfield land), identified by the NP Housing and Development Focus Group as worthy of consideration. The NP Steering Group has now assessed these sites in the light of the presenta-tions and taking into account other relevant factors decided which ones to put forward for possible inclu-sion in the draft plan. Open events will be planned for October at which residents of the Parish will be able to assess the work of the Steering Group and submit comments on sites that remain in the process before a draft plan is produced. As the dates of these events have yet to be arranged, please look out for details on the Henfield Hub, the Parish Council website, in the library and on public notice boards in the village and in Small Dole.

HENFIELD GARDEN CLUBOn Tuesday 7 October we welcome Steven Edney to the Henfield Hall to tell us all the latest news from the Secret Gardens of Sandwich in Kent, where he is Head Gardener. The three-and-a-half-acres of or-namental gardens are encircled by the old stone city walls and were originally devised by Sir Edwin Lu-tyens with the help of Gertrude Jekyll. Unfortunately in December last year the gardens suffered from a tidal surge which caused a great deal of damage includ-ing the loss of trees and rare plants due to salt wa-ter damage. Potted plants floated away and garden sheds were also damaged. Steven and his team are still working to resolve all the problems the flooding caused. Our talk starts at 7.30pm and tea or coffee are available beforehand. Non-members are wel-come, entrance £3. For more details please contact our Membership Secretary, Linda Beresford [email protected] 01273 492497.Margaret Hollingsworth

HENFIELD CYCLING DUO ‘STORM’ TO FINISH FOR CANCER CHARITY Two Henfield cyclists completed a storm-lashed Lon-don to Surrey bike ride to help raise around £1,000 for CLIC Sargent, the children’s cancer charity. Tracey Prescott and Adrian Hillman also completed the Pru-dential 100 Olympic cycle route last year - but this year it was shortened to 86 miles because of the stormy weather. “Due to the horrendous weather Leith Hill and Box Hill were closed,” said Tracey. “But it was still a tough course and we tackled the infamous Newlands Cor-ner hill in dreadful conditions. Having completed the whole course last year it was more mentally and physically challenging cycling through floodwater and driving rain.” Over the years Tracey, Adrian and mem-bers of their 777 Fundraising team have raised many

EMILY’S TRIP TO UGANDA I have recently returned from my International Guid-ing trip to Uganda and have had a brilliant time. There were 14 senior section guides and 4 leaders on the trip. During the first 2 weeks, we were project working for the Quicken Trust. This consisted of doing manual labour in the mornings and then playing with the chil-dren in the afternoon. Our whole group was split into 3 so we rotated amongst ourselves as to what work we did throughout the day. In the morning, we would either help build a maze mill, paint a library in the High School or do agriculture: digging, fertilizing and plant-ing soya and maize. In the afternoon, we would ei-ther play with the orphans or teach literacy lessons at the primary school. Each of the groups also had the chance to participate in ‘The Development Chal-lenge’, this is where we visited a family which the local community had chosen was most in need, ask them some questions and then spend 400,000 shillings (£100) on what we felt they needed the most. That was a real eye opener. The last 5 days of the trip were spent sightseeing. During these 5 days we had went on a Nile Boat ride tour, to the source of the River Nile, White-water raft-ing on the River Nile, to a number of markets and also an amazing African Safari in the Queen Elizabeth na-tional park. I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped me fundraise and gave so gen-erously at my various events, that I was able to go on a trip of a lifetime to Uganda. Emily Berrett

HENFIELD CHESS CLUBA chess club has newly formed in the village and is playing in the friendly Henfield Club which generously donated the chess pieces and the board. Members of the Chess Club have organised it such that ev-ery member eventually gets to play with every other member. They readily admit that most of them played years ago and are now keen to refresh their skills and rekindle their love of the game. Not surprisingly they are keen to invite others to join them, whatever their level is. For details including when a game could be organised do come along to the Henfield Club or email [email protected]

BEWARE OF BOGUS WORKMENA local elderly couple were recently conned out of £7,000 by some bogus workmen who said they would clean their roof, but who then made off with their money without completing any work. Another elderly couple were approached and told that they could have their roof cleaned for £6,000, but they refused to give them any money upfront. If anyone has any information about these bogus workmen, or has been approached, then please call the Citizens Advice Bureau on their Consumer Advice line: 03454 040506. They are aware of the issue and are eager to find out more information.Henfield Parish Council

BN5 BIRDSOur glorious summer is over. Members of Henfield Birdwatch involved in the current area surveys have had enjoyable, sunny walks and seen many lovely birds. In the Woodsmill to Streatham Bridge area 50 species were seen on one walk alone and five species of raptors were seen on another: kestrel, hobby, spar-row hawk, buzzard and red kite. One of the highlights has been the number of turtle doves in the parish. This dainty dove is smaller and darker than a collared dove and slightly larger than a blackbird. It migrates from south of the Sahara to southern and eastern England, arriving in late April/May and returns between July and September. It has a dis-tinctive, gentle purring call. The turtle dove is on the Red List of conservation concern having decreased in numbers in England by 93% since the 1970s. The

Henfield parish is a hot spot for this pretty bird. The RSPB is leading a turtle dove survey in 2015 which covers Kent, East & West Sussex, Essex and Suffolk and Henfield Birdwatch is looking to be involved in the survey. This year Henfield Birdwatch members have been in-volved in an owl survey and we are looking at other species that we can survey from a conservation point of view. We have gathered thousands of records about Henfield birds since it was formed in 1998 and we are now embarking on a process of converting all these records to a system that can be shared by other bodies such as the Sussex Ornithological Society and the Sussex Biodiversity Record Centre. We feel that these records could be useful in the current pressure from housing development. Please remember if you intend to feed the birds this winter to keep the feeding station clean and to clear up any feed that becomes wet and mouldy. Bird baths should also be cleaned regularly and the best way to stop the water freezing over is to empty the bath when it starts to get dark and fill again the next morning – don’t put an additive in the water to stop it freezing.See www.henfieldbirdwatch.co.uk.Deborah Colgate

CLODAGH CHURCHILL, 1915 - 2014Clodagh lived in Henfield from 1970 to 2013, and will be remembered by many of the older residents for years she was the village chiropodist. She was born

in Belfast, came to England and trained as a nurse before the war. In 1939 she married and later trained as a chiropodist. She and her husband, Ran, came to Henfield in 1970 and bought a bungalow in Furn-ers Mead. She worked with Dr Squires, in Cagefoot Lane for many years and later was self-employed. Her husband died in 1979 and she continued working until the 1990’s but had to give up driving, sold the bunga-low and moved to Holm Garth. She used to say that during the 1980’s she knew most of the feet in the vil-lage! As she aged, she made use of Good Neighbours for shopping and the Link for many trips. Dr Derrett was her GP and Dorothy Newman looked after her home for years. From about 2010 she needed more help and was looked after by staff from Cherish Care. In 2013, with her memory fading, she moved to Croft Meadow care home in Steyning. She died there on 12 August having had a very happy 99th birthday a month earlier. She left strict instructions for her funeral and had a humanist cremation on 22 August.Eve Bendall

They raised a fantas-tic £907.30 for St Barnabas Hospice who cared for Harvey’s mum, Lisa, for eight weeks before she sadly passed away in May aged 42. We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who sponsored them. Adrian Hillman, Chan-telle Muzeen, Jo Rodway, Gail Way, Lottie Way, Amy Robertson, Zoe Standing, Sammy Clarke, Mark Ber-rett, Heather Campbell and Laura Smith would like to thank everyone who helped them raise around £1,800 for the British Heart Foundation and £1,500 for Hen-field Leisure Centre. The Leisure Centre has already put the money to good use, investing in new equip-ment for fitness classes.

HENFIELD PARISH COUNCIL NEWSHenfield Parish Council has agreed with the owner of the Parsonage Farm Track, which runs from Upper Station Road to Deer Park (by the Medical Centre) to take over ownership of this track. For many years resi-dents with homes backing onto the track have been concerned regarding the height and spread of trees at the side of it. (In last winters’ storms a large oak tree came down across the track damaging property). Once ownership has been transferred tree surgery work will take place in respect of a number of these trees, which should both reassure the residents and provide for the better long term management.

Come and celebrate the festive season either in our restaurant or function room. Whether a night out with friends, a family gathering or

OPPORTUNITIES FOR GARDEN TRAINEES AND GARDEN OWNERSLocal gardens now have vacancies for anyone who might be interested in improving their practical gar-dening skills. The ‘Work and Retrain As a Gardener Scheme’ (or WRAGS) provides men or women of all ages with the opportunity to work for two days a week for 12 months under the instruction of a garden owner or head gardener in a carefully sourced garden. The scheme is coordinated locally by Liddy Davidson who sets up placements, reviews monthly reports and vis-its the trainees twice during their training year. Regis-tration fees are charged to help with the costs of the scheme, which at present are £375 for trainees and £125 for garden owners and a training allowance is paid direct to the trainee by the garden owner. Liddy said: “It is a ‘win win’ situation as garden own-ers benefit from the help they receive from enthusias-tic and committed trainees who in turn gain practical experience to go on to various careers in horticul-ture”. The scheme is just one project offered by the national charity the Women’s Farm and Garden As-sociation (WFGA) and members can also benefit from very useful workshops and workdays, informative newsletters, tours of gardens in the UK and Europe and free members’ gatherings in local gardens. For more information about WFGA membership and WRAGS (whether as a potential trainee or garden owner) please see www.wfga.org.uk , call the WFGA office on 01285 658 339 or email Liddy at: [email protected] Davidson

Chatter-box was started by Anne Bland and Jean Whiting, who were at Tuesday’s celebrations with current team leader Olwen Denman. Other helpers and parents joined in the cheers when the cake, made by Olwen, was cut by helpers. Olwen said: “We are delighted to have reached this milestone and look forward to many years to come.” Chatterbox meets every Tues-day morning from 9.30 – 11.30am for children up to four and their parents and carers. LETTER TO THE EDITORBarely a dry sunny day seems to pass at the moment without the house being filled with the smell of burn-ing wood and garden material. Not pleasant espe-cially when washing has been left out to dry. Any win-dows left open causes the house to smell of bonfire for days on end! In the interests of being neighbourly, please consider using your green bin or taking larger amounts of waste to the tip.Chris Lane

‘COMMUNITIES AGAINST GATWICK NOISE & EMISSIONS’ Communities against Gatwick Noise and Emissions (CAGNE), was originally formed to protest against a new trial flight path over the parish of Warnham. Since then it has expanded to represent concerns from many more communities in West Sussex. CAGNE has evolved rapidly and now opposes a second runway at Gatwick Airport. Gatwick aims to be larger than Heathrow is today resulting in huge increases in air-craft above our homes, and new sprawling housing estates paving over the countryside to provide sup-port for an expanded airport. As for traffic, just imag-ine the extra congestion on the M23, M25 and local roads, threatening to bring this area to an economic gridlock. CAGNE are very concerned that a second runway at Gatwick would turn much of our rural areas into ‘Boroughs of Gatwick’ forever with a lack of af-fordable housing, GPs, hospitals and schools. We invite you to join CAGNE by visiting www.cagne.org and signing-up or follow us on Twitter @cagnegat-wick. CAGNE

HENFIELD CLUB RAISES MONEY FOR SCOUTSHenfield Club members organised a fancy dress BBQ on Sunday 24 August. This was accompanied with a raffle, a quiz and later some music. The money raised goes to the new Scout Hut appeal, which is steadily but slowly increasing its funds. The Scout Hut, as in-deed is the Club, is used by many in the village for other events such as the Gardens and Arts week-end. As the saying goes, every little helps. Credit and thanks go to many: those who donated the prizes; those who aired their old school ties and skirts; those who gave time to cook and serve; those who organ-ised and managed the quiz; and those who attended and gave generously. The Henfield Club is proud to organise such events as one of many that makes our village what it is. Councillor Mike Morgan, as Scout Hut Project committee member collected the cheque from Tracey Bates who came up with the format of the event, and organised it with flair and enthusiasm.Kenneth McIntosh

The Henfield Hall stage is buzzing with activity as the photo shoot for the October BN5 cover image gets underway. Henfield Theatre Company’s ‘official’

photographer, Neville de Moraes, is breaking every health-n-safety rule, teetering halfway up a towering stepladder as three members of the cast of HTC’s latest production, Terra Nova, do a convincing portrayal of making camp in sub-zero temperatures at the South Pole. This incredible story is a real page-turner (or seat-filler in this instance). The play is set during the final weeks of the journey to the South Pole and the return struggle of Scott and his team. Events occur just before the horrors of the First World War and within weeks of the Titanic disaster. It explores the 1,600mile

Terra Nova the epic story of Scott and his men

man-hauling trek to the South Pole, using reference to the diaries left by Scott and his men, and culminates in the tragic end to their return journey.Trevor Hodgson is the director of this production, which is likely to be another box-office smash for HTC (don’t leave it too late to get your tickets!). It’s his first outing as director and he has a personal interest in this fascinating story. Trevor explained: “Robert Falcon Scott and I share the same birthday. Since being taken to an exhibition about him in Oxford as a small boy I have been inspired by his life and expeditions to Antarctica. The story of an epic walk across a frozen wilderness in temperatures of –40c and below, with equipment (that although cutting edge at the time)

was no more than canvas and fur, would capture any child’s imagination and those stories have never left me. When the opportunity to stage such an exciting production came up I jumped at the chance.”Staging a play of such historical importance does come with complications. Trevor is almost obsessive in his attention to detail and he’s discovered that the team of amateur experts at HTC is more than capable of creating props, special effects, costumes, lighting and sound effects to make his ambitious ideas a reality. Costume manager Lyn Fryer said; “Working on Terra Nova gave us some interesting and unique challenges. Making the parkas look less than pristine left us dying them with tea (and starting again when they shrank!) and then reverting to spray paint, it was a good lesson in problem solving! Our aim was to give individuality to each character. Our team is always looking for people with vision, people who enjoy a challenge, because there’s more to the role than the construction of the costumes.”Trevor designed and commissioned a life-size and historically correct sled, crafted by local carpenter Doug Parrott. Touches like this make the job of the actors a little easier as they transport themselves back to those times of incredible change, at the outbreak of WWI. Tony Westwood, who plays Evans, said; “Having

authentic props and costumes makes it feel like true life for us and Trevor’s passion for the story has rubbed off on all of us. We feel the emotion of the play very deeply, it helps our performances enormously to immerse ourselves in the story of their hardships and incredible strength of their personalities. I really feel I am Evans when I’m on stage, we all have a deep affinity for our characters.”When the ship Terra Nova returned to England in November 1912 with the news that the Southern Party had perished, there was a worldwide outpouring of sorrow. A memorial fund was set up which raised money to pay the men’s widows and families. Enough money was raised to found an Institute in Scott’s memory; the Scott Polar Research Institute, which still carries out polar research today. The staging of this very moving play, in the year of the centenary commemorations of the start of WWI, is a fitting tribute to the men of the ill-fated expedition.Emma Osman There are three Terra Nova performances from October 16th-18th at the Henfield Hall from 7.45pm, kindly spon-sored by The Plough Inn, Henfield. Tickets are available from Henfield Furnishings now.

Frozen in time The Henfield Museum is very fortunate to have been loaned artefacts from the Scott Polar Research Institute in Cambridge. This exciting display will coincide with the performances of Terra Nova being staged by Henfield Theatre Company. The loan was organised by the Company and consist of objects and photographs from Scott’s ill-fated Terra Nova expedition to Antarctica. The museum is open on weekdays (except Weds) 10am - 12pm & 2.30- 4.30pm on Weds. On Saturdays it’s open from 10am - 12pm & 2.30 - 4pm. It will also be open prior to performances (and during the interval) of Terra Nova.

Autumn has definitely arrived and as the nights start drawing in there’s nothing better than cozying up in front of a real fire.

Here at Heritage Products our firewood, seasoned Sussex logs and kindling are perfect for burning in open fires, multi-fuel stoves, wood burning stoves, BBQ’s, fire pits, chimnea’s and other wood burning appliances. All the logs we sell are seasoned hardwood logs (including beech and ash along with other quality woods) and they burn slowly and efficiently providing great warmth and that distinctive fragrance that only a log fire can provide. From small logs suitable for log burners through to the larger ‘pub’ logs we have a log size to suit everyone.

However many logs you need, we offer a

range of different sized containers from small

nets up to bulk bags (equivalent

Keeping you warm

this winterto roughly 28 to 30 nets). You can also buy loose logs in quantities up to 3m³. With a weeks’ notice we can deliver throughout Sussex and the cost of delivery is included in the price. Jane and Karen can take your order by telephone or online, or if you prefer, you can come along to our wood yard to collect – James and Tony would be delighted to welcome you to our enchanting wood yard on the Knepp Castle Estate where you can also see our wide range of other garden related products. As well as our gardening and landscaping products (including topsoil, bark, mulch, fencing, chestnut stakes and hazel hurdles) we also have an exciting range of original and stylish garden accessories displayed in our wood yard. Some of these are featured on our Facebook page but nothing beats coming and having a good browse at our full range. To keep your garden elegantly illuminated we have beautiful Moroccan and Arabian style lanterns, as well as log candle and log candle burners. And for those of you who want to carry on enjoying your garden on autumn and winter evenings we have a range of stunning Kadai fire bowls. We also have hand-crafted

Tee pees (yes, you read that right, Tee pees!). These are made to order and are perfect if you are looking for a gift

for the person who has everything. We look forward to welcoming you!

A team from Henfield Community Partnership (HCP) is investigating how Henfield Day Centre, which is threatened with closure by West Sussex County

Council (WSCC), could be transformed into a thriving centre for the community. The Centre, which is on Hewitts (behind the Shell station), currently operates only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. It provides specialist care for people with advanced dementia who need a great deal of support. There is a clear necessity for such a service locally, as Henfield has an older population and the number of people suffering from dementia is set to grow. Furthermore, there is opportunity to make much better use of the building by offering a wider range of services on other days and perhaps in the evenings. With support from WSCC, the team is investigating taking over management of the building. The aim is to continue providing the existing care service and to extend the range of facilities to make the Centre financially viable.Around one in ten older people in England say that they are often or always lonely. Around one in ten older people in England say that they are often or always lonely. Henfield has 440 single pensioner households, representing 21% of the total households which compares with the national average of about 12%. Hence, social isolation is an even greater issue in our area. The HCP team is developing a plan for a multipurpose centre that would offer a range of health and wellbeing services. A care service for dementia sufferers would continue to form a core part of the rejuvenated centre but additional day care as well as clubs and activities for older people could also be offered. These activities could provide many more opportunities for older people to enjoy company, make new friends and stay engaged in society. Some of the ideas that have been suggested include music making, reading groups, quizzes, armchair games and gentle exercises. There might also be personal services such as manicures,

podiatry, hairdressing, and therapeutic massage. In the long run, these facilities would help people to stay active and healthier into older age and reduce the need for hospital stays or residential care.It is likely that a new social enterprise company would have to be set up by the HCP to manage the centre and possibly maintain the building. The principal care services would be provided by specialist organisations. Local businesses could get involved to offer personal services. One extra benefit would be an increase in local employment and volunteering opportunities.HCP is now seeking initial proposals from service providers who share this vision and who would like to work together to produce the best possible outcome for the community. A final decision by WSCC on whether to proceed with the scheme is expected in the New Year. Local support will be a key factor in deciding whether this proposal goes ahead. We would like to hear from residents on what services and activities you would like it to offer. Please drop us a line and let us know your views on [email protected] or [email protected] Jackson & Steve Bailey

Last month we had the privilege of meeting two lovely local couples who are dealing with early-onset dementia. Ron Duggin from Partridge

Green was diagnosed in 2010 aged 64 and Graham French from Henfield was diagnosed in 2007 aged 60. Their remarkable wives, Sue and Rosemary, are coping with the challenges that dementia presents with an incredibly positive outlook. Dementia is caused when the brain is damaged by diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease or a series of strokes. It is a progressive disease and the symptoms get gradually worse. Dementia has a huge impact on an individual’s life, as well as on their families and carers. Many people assume that it is an old person’s disease, but it is increasingly affecting younger and more active people. The two couples met us to explain how they are facing Dementia head on - continuing to live, laugh and stay active in the face of challenges which, to the outsider, could seem insurmountable.

Rosemary: It never occurred to either Graham or I that we might be affected by dementia in our lives. You always worry about cancer, but dementia was just not something we had thought about.

Rosemary: As a group we have organised loads of activities, most of which Graham and I just wouldn’t do on our own. We go on walks, picnics, outings, theatre trips, and meals out. It gives me things to look forward to and it’s enabling Graham to continue doing these activities, which we both loved before he was diagnosed.

Living well with dementia

Sue: We do challenge ourselves to do new things - let’s do the things we can do, try things we’re not sure we can do (what’s to lose) and not worry about the other stuff. If it goes wrong we just laugh our way through it!

Rosemary

SueRon

Graham

Sue: After Ron was diagnosed I wanted to meet other couples in a similar situation – young and active and living with dementia. I was put in contact with Rosemary through the local Alzheimer’s Society and that led to the setting up of our own social support group which we’ve called De-active. There’s eight couples now in our group and we’ve all become very good friends.

Want to know more? The Alzheimer’s Society website www.alzheimers.org.uk has a wealth of information on dementia. Their lo-cal office is based in Horsham and services for people in this area include: a Dementia Adviser and Dementia Support Workers; two Carers Support Groups; the De Café; and the Oasis Sunday Club (respite care). For information contact the West Sussex Helpline on 01403 213017 [email protected] Dementia is a local charity based in Henfield and they organise a range of activities for those living with dementia and their families including: monthly drop-in information sessions in both Partridge Green and Henfield; family events; and a dementia friendly commu-nity choir in Henfield called Jazzled. They also support the Sporting Moments club, along with Horsham District Council. For more information call 01273 494300, email [email protected] www.knowdementia.co.uk Sarah Butler

Rosemary: There’s no getting away from it, in our group everyone’s husbands are going downhill. Graham and I used to cycle around the village, but one day he failed to stop at the end of Park road and went flying out into the high street on a busy Saturday afternoon! He finally found his brakes at Truffles - and that was the point when I decided that perhaps we ought to give up cycling! There’s no point getting upset about the things you can’t do anymore – you’ve just got to get on with it.

Rosemary: Usually nothing goes wrong when we are out on our group activities, but it does make it easier knowing that you have friends on hand to help out if it does. I’d also like to think that us being out and about and enjoying things gives other people a more positive view of living with dementia. Yes it’s difficult, but you don’t have to be stuck at home - you can carry on with your lives.

Sue: We’ve set up a weekly sports club on a Monday morning at Southwater Leisure Centre called Sporting Moments. It’s free and open to everyone living with dementia and their carers. Steve, the manager at the Leisure Centre, is brilliant and he arranges a variety of activities for us each week including curling, boxing, table tennis, skittles and badminton which we all take part in.

Rosemary: Every dementia is different and there is no one way to respond to someone living with it. Most of the people Graham and I meet when we are out are generally quite positive. The local shops in Henfield are particularly understanding, especially as Graham often forgets that he needs to pay for things – crème eggs are a particular favourite of his!

Sue: Dementia is still a taboo subject but things are slowly changing. Ron and I have never had a negative experience when we are out and about and I have never had to explain his condition to anyone.

Rosemary: Our De-active group has been hugely helpful to me. If you are feeling low or you are trying to deal with a crisis, there is always someone there to support you who knows exactly what you are going through.

Sue: Most of my support now comes from our De-active group. It’s a massive part of my life and I don’t know how I coped before we set it up.

Sue: We organised a De-active weekend away earlier this year, something which would have been unthinkable on my own! We travelled by minibus to an activity hotel in Devon and we all took part in a range of sporting activities including pistol shooting, bowls, badminton and snooker. The weekend was a brilliant success and all the hotel and activity staff were very supportive. Our husbands all had a great time and us wives really felt like we’d had a holiday – I actually felt relaxed!

• Take frequent breaks if you drive long distances or work long hours at your computer. Keep your head back, over your spine, to reduce neck strain. Try to avoid gritting your teeth. • Adjust your desk, chair and com-puter so the monitor is at eye level. Knees should be slightly lower than hips. Think about your posture when sitting at your desk, so that your can concentrate your mind on the work ahead.

• Avoid tucking the phone between your ear and shoulder when you talk. If you use the phone frequently, get a headset.

• Stretch frequently if you work at a desk. Shrug your shoulders up and down. Pull your shoulder blades together and then relax. Pull your shoulders down while leaning your head to each side to stretch your neck muscles. • Stretching the front chest wall muscles and strengthening the muscles around the shoulder blade and back of the shoulder can promote a balanced base of support for the neck.

Most neck pain is associated with poor posture on top of age-related wear and tear. To help prevent neck pain, keep your head centred over your spine, so gravity works with your neck instead of against it. Some simple changes in your daily routine may help. Consider trying the following:

I began my Tai Chi training at a time when I was suffering a back condition and therefore restricted to non impact exercise.

I soon discovered, however, that the Tai Chi postures flowing from one to another through controlled slow movements were gentle enough to be accessible to those of limited physical ability yet could be developed to a level where the movements could be practiced in a way to pose a significant challenge to the most demanding athlete. As my Tai Chi developed over the years I’ve realised that my practice has become a personal investment in myself – an investment in my future old age; by improving my coordination, my flexibility, balance control, together with a general feeling of well-being.How far one takes Tai Chi is up to the individual

and like any art form it can be practiced at a class just once a week, however, for me it has now become a way of life. How about you?Why not give Tai Chi a try and contact http://westsussex-taichi.co.uk

Get fit for life

The gym is not just for fit people and the Henfield Leisure Centre is the perfect place to get fit for life.We are extremely fortunate here in the village that

the Henfield Medical Centre and Henfield Leisure Centre are partners in the ‘Exercise on Prescription’ scheme. This partnership allows GPs to prescribe a subsidised 10 week course of exercise at the Leisure Centre to people with certain medical conditions including: arthritis, diabetes, chronic low back pain, coronary heart disease, obesity, depression and osteoporosis. If your GP has assessed that you are eligible for the scheme they will give you a prescription which will enable you to book an initial fitness assessment with Sam, the gym manager and qualified ‘Exercise on prescription’ coordinator. Based on this assessment Sam will then design you a personal gym programme, explain how the scheme works, show you around the gym and demonstrate how to use the equipment safely. The course is extremely safe and designed to build up your confidence and strength slowly. The prescription lasts for ten weeks and during this time it will be recommended that you visit the gym or attend a fitness class twice a week for around 30 - 45 minutes per session. You will need to wear light and comfortable clothing and pair of trainers or soft shoes for each session. Bring along a towel and a drink or water bottle (chilled water is freely available in the gym). You are more than welcome to bring along a friend or relative for moral support or encouragement, but you will find that all the staff at the Leisure Centre are all extremely friendly and approachable. There is a charge for the course (£12 for the initial assessment and £3 per session thereafter), but this is subsidised by the National Health Service. At the end of the ten weeks you will meet with Sam again so that he can monitor your progress and decide whether you need a further referral.

Once you have increased your fitness and confidence, you may want to start thinking about joining a fitness class. Exercising with a group is a fantastic motivator and a great way to meet with like-minded people. You don’t need to be Jane Fonda or Mr Motivator, you just need to get your heart rate up and enjoy yourself! There are a variety of different classes at the Leisure Centre which are suitable for a range of fitness levels and ages including: aerobics, circuit training, re-bounding, spinning, yoga, pilates, body blitz, pump & blitz, legs bums & tums and circle dancing. Sam or any of the other Leisure Centre staff will be able to advise you on which class would be most suitable for you. For more information about Exercise on prescription see your GP or contact the Henfield Leisure Centre 01273 494 984.Sarah Butler

We met Moira and her husband Peter at Henfield Leisure Centre where Moira was enjoying a GP referral session with Sam. Moira is incredibly determined to make a good recovery from her stroke three years ago. Peter explained that they moved to Henfield a year ago specifically because of the good gym facilities at the Leisure Centre and the GP referral scheme: “Moira has improved dramatically. She gains a lot of enjoyment from the sessions as well as increased mobility.” He went on: “She has sessions with Sam and the other personal trainers and we come for extra sessions on our own to complement these.” Moira added: “Everyone here at the gym is so open and friendly from the trainers to the fittest members – it’s not at all intimidating”.We wish Moira all the best with her ongoing recovery.

KEYMER HASLAM & CO

Just when you thought the PPI scandal had gone away the regulator has

told the banks to reopen 2.5 million cases for underpaying the compensation due.

The total amount that they have collectively underpaid to those who won their complaints is expected to be in the region of £1 billion. Meanwhile RBS have been fined £15 million for providing inappropriate mortgage advice to clients with their subsidiary Coutts being fined £206 million for providing poor advice to 15,000 of their clients. Not wanting to miss out on the action Santander have pre-emptively contacted their clients who were sold particular structured deposits suggesting they might have miss-advised them and they could be due compensation. All of this may be historical, with many banks having already sacked most of their advisers, but it may not be too long before they are re-hiring them ready to cause the next scandal – with Government blessing. One of the promises in the budget was that those now faced with a myriad of options as to how to take their pension benefits is that they would be entitled to free face to face ‘guidance’. The face-to-face element of this has already been removed however there are apparently comments from those in power that the

only organisations with the infrastructure to provide this guidance are the high street banks! To me this seems a bit like asking someone convicted of burgling your home to house sit for you. As many know from bitter experience they may hold themselves out as unbiased and acting in the customer’s best interest but only really care about their own bottom line. I fear that this guidance will inevitably lead to another misselling scandal with unwitting customers being ‘guided’ into unsuitable options from their limited range of poor products. The irony is that for most people who want an income from their pension pot little actually changes. The two broad options remain buy an annuity if you want an absolutely guaranteed income or assuming you are comfortable with investment risk take your benefits through pension drawdown if you would like to benefit from potential investment growth and have an asset to pass on to your family. These are big decisions - some people will be happy and able to research the best option for themselves. Others will want or need proper advice from someone acting in their interest. However, I’m not sure who this third group of those who need guidance from proven cowboys is.Richard Cohen, FPFS, Chartered Financial Planner

Whatever type of business you run, whether it is a limited

company, partnership, or whether you are self-em-ployed, it is important to know what expenses are allowable for tax purposes. This means claiming tax

relief on expenses incurred during the course of running your business. The general rule is that costs you pay with the sole purpose of earning busi-ness profits are allowable expenses. Please note that

Tax relief on expensesyou can’t deduct costs for non-business / personal pur-poses or for buying or improving fixed assets / capital items which last several years. Valid business expenses will reduce taxable profits, thereby reducing the overall amount of tax payable.VAT can affect the amount you include in your allowable expenses. If you are VAT registered, use the net amount (i.e. the expense less VAT) to reduce your turnover. However, you can only do this if the VAT on that expense is recoverable. If you aren’t VAT registered, use the total amount spent on the expense (including VAT). Listed below are some of the more common examples of expenditure:

Expenditure Deductible Not Deductible

Normal business expenses generally

Expenditure incurred wholly and exclusively in the course of business

Personal expenditure and all entertaining except staff

Capital items (i.e. items ex-pected to be used for > 1 year)

An annual Capital Allowance is available for most capital items (see below)

Freeholds and long leaseholds of most non-industrial premises

Computer Software If bought separately from hardware Otherwise, Capital Allowances available

Gifts to customers Gifts costing up to £50 & bearing business name Any gift of food or drink

Home Expenses Reasonable proportion of home running expens-es, depending on the extent of use for business

Standing charges for utilities and domestic ex-penditure not related to the business

Wages and Salaries Staff (including family where duties carried out) Self-employed drawings & gratuitous family wages

Telephone Business proportion of landline and all mobile Private element of landline and home line rental

Motor Expenses Business proportion based on mileage (self-employed/partnership)

Private element (self-employed/partnership)

Travel Expenses Business travel Travel between home and normal place of business

Subscriptions Professional subscriptions, relevant publications Items not associated with the business

Insurance Business related policies Life assurance, self-employed National Insurance, health and sickness insurance

Accountancy, legal and other professional fees

Fees for accountants, solicitors, surveyors, architects & other professional indemnity insur-ance premiums

Legal costs of buying property & large items of equipment; costs of settling tax disputes & fines

Advertising & business enter-tainment costs

Advertising in newspapers, directories etc.; mailshots; free samples; website costs

Entertaining clients, suppliers and customers; hospitality at events

Bank, credit card and other financial charges

Bank, overdraft & credit card charges; hire purchase interest & leasing payments. Alternative finance payments

Repayment of the loans or overdrafts or finance arrangements

Bad Debts Specific bad debts from unrelated parties General provisions

Food & Drink (subsistence) Moderate amounts only when working away Other (excessive) amounts

Depreciation and loss/profit on sale of assets

Depreciation and loss/profit on sale of assets are not allowable expenses

Depreciation of equipment, cars etc. Losses on sales of assets (minus any profits on sales)

Capital allowances are commonly claimed on items that you might use in your business over several years. Generally speaking, anything that you use in your business that has a useful life of over two years may qualify for an allowance. You can claim capital allowances for certain items that you can’t claim as an allowable expense; for example: plant and machinery (including cars, vans, computers and tools); and fixtures and fittings (including shelves, furniture and fittings). You can’t claim for things you buy or sell as your trade – these are claimed as business expenses. If you buy an item on hire purchase, you can claim a capital allowance on the original cost of the item, but the interest and other charges count as business expenses.Proper records should be kept and all expenditure should be supported by receipts and invoices. If you are VAT registered, you will be able to reclaim the input VAT on your business expenses. Remember that VAT can only be reclaimed if you have a full VAT receipt and a breakdown of VAT charged. The above list is not exhaustive and professional advice should be sought in the usual way. For further advice on this, or on other business issues, contact Paul Samrah on 01737 779000 or at [email protected]. Paul Samrah
