Home from home with Bluebells Nursery Jo Al-Tarafi, the manager of Bluebells Nursery in Partridge Green, knows exactly what parents are looking for when it comes to finding the right pre-school childcare for their children: a real home-from home environment where highly qualified and caring staff tailor care to each individual child’s needs.

Add to this their unique rural environment and flexible approach to hours (full, part-time and emergency care) and Bluebells Nursery really does have a winning formula.

“We pride ourselves on the partnerships we develop with parents in the care of their children and we work hard to maintain the routine that the children are used to at home” explained Jo.

The early years practitioners at Bluebells aim to do all they can to help children have the best possible start in life and en-courage them to develop a love for learning. We understand that parents play a vital role in supporting their children’s learning and development and this is why we ask parents to be involved with the nursery as much as possible.

Having a clear understand of a child’s interest through both nursery and home life enables us to understand and support each child’s individual development pathway.

The baby room, which takes children as young as three months, is a small and homely environment, decorated in neutral, calm and warm colours. Babies can start as young as three months and they stay in the baby room until they are around two years old. The nursery has introduced ‘heuristic play’ for the baby room and Kira Bryant, the Deputy Manager explained more about this exciting approach: “It’s all about letting children express their natural curiosity about day-to-day household things they find around them. As babies de-velop, they want to feel, taste and think about objects. As they grow into toddlers their curiosity grows too and they want to find out what they can do with the objects, for example stack them, knock them down or post them through a hole. It’s all great fun for the child, but at the same time it’s strengthening their cognitive development, muscle control and hand/eye co-ordination.”

When children reach the age of two they graduate to the Oak Room which is a warm space decorated in neutral colours to complement the outside garden area. The room has an open layout that is subtly separated into different areas including a craft area, a computer for developing ICT skills, a cosy corner for relaxing (or even snoozing!) and a book corner. The focus in the Oak Room is on free-flow play and any structured activities are based around the interest of the children. But what really sets the nursery apart is its outdoor space. The secure garden is simply enormous and the older children have huge amounts of fun playing with the climbing frame, the natural willow dome, the play house and the all-weather sandpit. When the ground is really wet underfoot there is also a large patio play area. The Nursery also has direct access to a large meadow which is perfect for ‘bug hunt’ expeditions during the summer months. “We know that children love being outside and we are so lucky to have such fantastic outdoor facilities” said Jo. “We have extended the free-flow play the children currently enjoy in the Oak Room to include the garden as well, which is a really exciting development.”

Jo or Kira and the rest of the team look forward to welcom-ing you and your child into the Bluebells Nursery Family.

Phew! We did it! And by we, I mean St Peter’s Year 6, Mrs Nikki Lee and many other St Peter’s children and their teachers - with a little help from us at BN5. This August issue is very, very special to us - for the first time EVER we’ve handed the BN5 reins over, and what a safe pair of hands they turned out to be!

Please take time to read the articles, written and created by these talented children under the guidance of the magnificent teaching staff at St. Peter’s. We feel very privileged to have worked with them all, their writing is witty, lively and descriptive; their topics interesting and their artwork shows imagination and some wonderful talent.

Our cover was designed by year 6 pupil Freya Taylor-Lester, pictured below with her teacher Nikki Lee. We loved Freya’s design, it captured the brief; “School’s out for Summer” perfectly. Thank you to Seawhite of Brighton in Partridge Green for giving Freya a personalised art pack as her prize.

Have a wonderful summer holiday - especially all you teachers!

HENFIELD SCHOOL FETE PUTS FLYING SCOTSMEN IN A SPINSt Peter’s school fete brought out hundreds of visitors in June who were entertained by the ‘Flying Scots-men’ wheelbarrow team. As well as swirling kilts, water-bombs and wheelbarrow skirmishes, the good-humoured antics wowed an enthusiastic crowd. Pony and donkey rides, a fire engine, bouncy castles, pen-alty shoot-outs, table games and children’s activity displays were highlights. “We had brilliant weather and raised a good amount for school funds,” said PTA chairman Richard Lucy. Children and parents led a procession down Henfield High Street before the start of the fete.Mike Beardall

NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN UPDATEWork on Henfield’s Neighbourhood Plan is progress-ing well. It remains on schedule to proceed to referen-dum in the middle of 2015. Neighbourhood and Hous-ing Needs surveys were delivered to all properties in the parish and summaries of the completed forms are now available. So too is a ‘State of the Parish’ report which brings together all the evidence to date. These documents are all on www.henfieldhub.com with reference copies available in the Parish Office and Library. Meetings for public examination of pos-sible sites for development are being held in August. Look out for details of these on the Hub and on public noticeboards in the village.

STAN’S BIKE SHACK Stan’s Bike Shack was conceived from a passion for cycling, coffee and cake and is ideally located on the Downs Link at Bines Road by Homelands Farm, in Partridge Green. With a simple objective to deliver gourmet coffee and homemade cake, Stan’s Bike Shack is a family friendly location to meet before riding out, or a place to rest and refresh weary limbs where you can enjoy the company of friends. Cycling, coffee and cake have become natural partners and considered by cyclists as a tasty reward for miles covered and calories burned. Everyone is welcome at Stan’s Bike Shack, whether you prefer to ride or walk. Either way the Downs Link

offers easy access to the South Downs National Park, countless bridleways and footpaths, historic towns and villages, and places of interest. Stan’s Bike Shack is ideally placed for road and off-road cyclists to drop in for rewarding coffee and cake before heading out across Sussex, or south towards the challenging climbs of the South Downs. And once you reach the top of the Downs there awaits further reward from spectacular views of Sussex-by-the-sea.If you are not a coffee lover then Stan’s Bike Shack serves a range of tea to suit all tastes, sumptuous hot chocolate and a selection of soft drinks too. If you’re hungry and in the mood for something savoury we have a good selection including Panini’s and sand-wiches, all made fresh daily on the premises. We also carry a range of popular energy drinks, bars and gels to help cyclists on their journey. Stan’s Bike Shack is delighted to introduce Mick Jones, an ex-GB Olympic athlete and Gold medal Commonwealth Champion who is our very own Coach Mentor & Sports Injury Therapist. Mick is highly regarded in GB sporting circles and can design and deliver training and coaching programmes for all levels of competitor up to international and Olympic standard. CHARITY 20/20 CRICKET MATCH WON BY WHITE HART TEAMA new Henfield charity cricket Twenty20 competition to raise funds for Henfield Cricket Club saw the tro-phy lifted by a White Hart team in June. The pub team won with just one ball to play against Henfield’s village eleven. “It was a brilliant evening to help raise money for the cricket club,” said Gyles Culver, landlord of The White Hart, who donated the trophy. Other fund-raisers on the evening included a barbeque and a bar.

JANET ANGELA POUND, 10 FEBRUARY 1935 – 1 JUNE 2014Janet was born and lived in the district of Barnet dur-ing the Second World War. She got her love of horses from her father and with her sister Pat always had po-nies to ride. She married Maurice in 1960 and the four children started to come along. We moved to Steyn-ing in 1963 and when the children started to show an interest in riding she was in her element. Always a hard-working and loving mother Janet also became a second mother to many overseas children that she fostered to boost the family coffers. We moved to Henfield in 1976. As an active member of the WI she had an outlet for her other talents of upholstery, silver jewellery, and jam and preserve making. When the kids started to leave home, a career as a B&B lady followed and continued until arthritis curtailed these activities and those of using her working dogs on two local shoots. So as wife, mother and grandmother to nine, this lovely lively lady will be sadly missed. The family would like to thank everyone for their kind thoughts at this time.Maurice Pound

THREE PEAKS – DONE! Congratulations to the team of seven intrepid HART responders who climbed three mountains and raised £2,000 for HART within 24 hours. Their actual time was 23 hours and one minute – an incredible feat considering they also stopped to assist a climber in difficulties. With them was lucky mascot Ted the Fire-man bear given to them by the fire crews organising the challenge.Anne Dewdney, one of the HART team, said: “This was a real team effort. We stuck together all the way, resting and eating in the minibus between the three climbs. We were delighted to complete this very de-manding challenge in such a good time.” As well as Anne, team members were Claire Greenfield, Sandra Parsons, Martin Tooth, Kas Fletcher, Josh Westlake and Mark Skilton. Sponsors were solicitors Griffith Smith Farrington Webb, Sean Preston of Southdown Truck and Crane and Gyles Culver, landlord of the White Hart.

The Three Peaks challenge entailed climbing Ben Nevis (Scotland), Scafell Pike (Cumbria) and Snow-don (Wales) within 24 hours, transported to each by three volunteer drivers (all responders) – Dave Fletcher, John Rodrigues and Heather Kingdon (who is with PART, Partridge Green Area Response Team). Mark Skilton’s Henfield company DSA Products do-nated £200 to the walkers. Nadia Cowdrey, partner at Griffith Smith Farrington Webb, said: “Everyone here in the office is very proud of the work HART does and think this is a tremendous achievement. HART makes a huge difference to the community in and around Henfield.” To donate: www.henfieldresponders.org.ukMike Beardall

‘TEENIE’ FUNDRAISER RAISES THOUSANDS FOR HOSPITALHenfield ladies Jayne Heritage, Claire Jor-dan, Jackie Webb and Michelle Taylor hosted a special fun-draising event at the South Lodge Hotel on Friday 4 July in memory of Michelle’s younger sister Martine Barthram who lost her battle against breast cancer in November last year. The Martine Memorial Fundraiser team is go-ing to create a special reflection room and garden at Worthing Hospital to be used by other cancer patients who need to spend a little time away from the hustle and bustle of the treat-ment and consulting areas. The fundraisers will also be making a donation to the Winston’s Wish founda-tion, a charity that supports children bereaved of a parent. It was a poignant and fun evening that had a ‘jewel’ theme, and was supported by many local businesses and people. Jen Allmond of Bay Tree Trading created the beautiful floral table displays with bejewelled vas-es and tealights. 100 guests enjoyed a Pimms recep-tion, a three-course dinner and live music from Jason Paris, Ella Gardner and The Soundhouse. But it was the live auction, conducted by the witty Brian ‘Bet-tsy’ Betts, and a ‘Diamond Dip’ raffle that helped raise the money. White Mischief donated a generous star prize which had guests digging deep for Diamond Dip tickets. And the auction included many ‘not on the high street’ type items including an Afternoon Tea and Tour with Nick Herbert MP, signed football shirts from Brighton & Hove Albion and Manchester United, and a specially created jewel themed cake from Kaylees Cakery topped with a Swarovski necklace.Michelle, Jayne, Claire and Jackie are so grateful to all of their generous patrons and prize donators which included so many of the Henfield High Street busi-nesses. The final total has yet to be calculated (at the time of publication) but exceeds £8,500. See their Facebook page www.facebook.com/martinefund for more information.Michelle Taylor

THE BIG BROWNIE BIRTHDAYOn Saturday the 21 June 900 brownies descended on the Amex stadium for Sussex Central’s Big Brownie Birthday sleepover to celebrate 100 years of Brown-ies. Both the Henfield Brownie packs attended and one of the Brownies made her Promise in the stands. While there, the Brownies took part in all sorts of ac-tivities including a training session with Albion in the community, a challenging climb up Spider Mountain, an inflatable assault course, circus skills, fairground stalls and crafts. In the evening there was a disco be-fore everyone settled down in the stands to watch the film monsters university on the big screens. The next morning each brownie got to ice a Brownie birthday cake followed by some campfire singing to round off an exciting and fun filled weekend which was enjoyed by all and will never be forgotten. Visit www.girlguid-ing.org.uk to get involved and help us on our way to the next 100 years.

ASHURST COUNTRY FAIR AND FUN DOG SHOWThis years’ country fair and fun dog show will be held on the Recreation Ground from midday on 31 August. There will be a silent auction, wellie wanging, raffle, archery, kids activities and lots of country stalls selling delicious locally sourced produce. Great food will be available throughout the afternoon from the sizzling BBQ, cool ice cream stand and tea stall. There will be a bar with locally brewed beer, re-freshing soft drinks and freshly made Pimms. Stalls are welcome by arrangement – please call 01403 710585. All proceeds will go to the new Ashurst Vil-lage Hall.

HELP REQUIREDCan anyone help please? A local lady who attends a club in Worthing called Buddy’s (every Thursday from 3-5pm) needs taking there and back from Henfield. Buddy’s is a great support for those with learning dif-ficulties and it’s a very important date in her diary and her chance to meet others. However, she has lost her transport and is very sad to be missing this date. We would love to help her out, even if you can just help once in a while. Please contact Fiona Ordidge at Henfield Medical Centre on 01273 492255 if you can help her. Thank you.

HENFIELD SUMMER SHOW 2015 - CAN YOU HELP?Henfield Parish Council is starting to consider the ar-rangements for the next Henfield Summer Show in July 2015. The Show is held on Henfield Common ev-ery other years and last years’ Show was proclaimed a success. This was however only achieved by a large amount of work done by relatively few volunteers. The Council now feels that if Henfield wishes to have a Show in 2015 there must be more involvement from people within the community in helping to organise the event. Volunteers are particularly needed to help with the physical work involved setting up the Showground on the Thursday evening and Friday leading up to the Show and on the Saturday, the day of the Show. With-out this help there are serious concerns as to whether this very popular event will take place in 2015. If you feel you can help please contact Mike Morgan on 492134 or the Council office on 492507.MISS POTTS

PACKED MEETING CONDEMNS MAYFIELD MARKET TOWNSDespite beautiful barbeque weather and a lure of a World Cup match, around 500 people crammed into St Paul’s Catholic College Hall in Burgess Hill for the Public Meeting on 20 June. There were so many peo-ple, that the hall was filled to capacity and some had to listen from outside. The panel of speakers included Arundel and Downs MP, Nick Herbert; Mid Sussex MP, Nicholas Soames; Mid Sussex District Councillor, Norman Webster; Hosham District Councillor, Brian O’Connell; Founder of LAMBS, Anthony Watts Wil-liams; Chief Executive of the Sussex Wildlife Trust, Dr

Tony Whitbread; Dr Roger Smith, Sussex CPRE and Kenneth MacIntosh from Hands Off Henfield. Nick Herbert told the crowd of his frustration with Mayfields’ persistence against a wall of local oppo-sition and the obvious unsuitability of the site. “The Mayfield proposal has no local support… It is on Greenfield land - Greenfield land that, as we saw over the winter, is prone to flooding… and it is nowhere near a railway station… This is therefore an entirely unsustainable proposal that will not fulfil the condi-tions for a new town, garden town, Garden City - call it what you will.”Planning Councillors Norman Webster and Brian O’Connell said both District Councils had dismissed the London-based company and did not support Mayfields’ new town scheme. “Mid Sussex does not support this proposal,” said Mr Webster. “It is not in our district plan which has a bottom up approach and has widespread local political support. It is not supported locally by Neighbourhood Plans either. It is developer led by a national company, and we see it giving no benefit to the local area.”Mayfields proposed 10,000 home settlement would have a devastating impact on the thriving village of Henfield, which has already suffered considerably at the hands of the Government Planning Inspectorate. Most recently, the Inspector overturned a local plan-ning decision by giving the go ahead for 160 houses on a greenfield site in West End Lane. For more information see www.lambs.org.uk LAMBS

If you LOVE FOOD but you’re short on time Cornerweighs in Henfield has the answer – a new range of lovingly prepared ready-meals with absolutely no nasties! LOVE FOOD is the brainchild of Henfield businessman Aaron Douglass who you may know from the successful Gastro Catering Company.

LOVE FOOD produces a range of handmade ready meals available through farm shops and independent stores. They also offer a home delivery service where they sell their ready meals alongside other Sussex produce. The range includes dishes such as ‘Traditional Lasagne’ and ‘Sussex Fish Pie’ as well as innovative dishes such as ‘Beef and Beetroot Curry’, utilising great Sussex produce such as organic Goodwood beef and Sussex Charmer cheese.

Every ready meal is made by hand by REAL chefs without machines, and all meat is local or at a minimum, British (except their chorizo which, of course is Spanish!). LOVE FOOD refuses to add colours, artificial flavourings or preservatives to their food. They are currently developing a range of delicious desserts and a children’s range of tasty ‘no nasties’ food.

LOVE FOOD is a finalist for ‘Sussex Food Producer of the Year’ - you can vote at www.sussexfoodawards.biz until 22nd of September, it only takes a minute and there’s no registration.

Aaron said; “Cornerweighs is just a stone’s throw from my home on Henfield High Street and having lived in the village most of my life I am very pleased that we have a local store stocking our meals. Susie has been very positive about the product and is a pleasure to deal with. Her shop is well stocked and always looks great which means she keeps a loyal customer base. It’s a perfect location!”

Year 6 go

WILD on the

Isle of Wight!

After working incredibly hard for their SATs exams in May, the year six pupils enjoyed a well-deserved multi-activity residential course on the Isle of Wight. They were kept busy from breakfast to bedtime with a range of challenging adventures which encouraged team building and leadership skills. On their return they wrote about their experiences in their creative writing class, here’s just a few of their very descriptive stories of their week of fun!

TUNNEL TRAIL Like every morning on the Isle of Wight it was frantic! The whole chalet wobbled as we charged about like animals around the cabin. It was time for the first activity of the day. For me it was the worst of them all. Tunnel trail! As we staggered into the shadowy cramped room, adrenaline raced round my veins. My stomach churned my breakfast from this morning like a washing machine. My heart rate came to a halt as we began to enter. My elbows caught the sides of the tunnel and the pitch black before me led to a mysterious, forgotten nowhere.

FREYA TAYLOR LESTER

The tunnel mouth glared at me creepily as if it was daring me to go inside. The kind instructor’s words seemed distant and remote as I did the knee pad straps up. Soon the dreadful time had come. We all got onto our hands and knees and began to crawl. The entrance evily loomed over me and five awful seconds later I was in. The darkness was atomically overwhelming. It was like falling into a gigantic bath full of black treacle. It was absolutely pointless to open your eyes.AMON IDA-BOWERS

As I first crawled through the pitch black, claustrophobic tunnel I felt petrifyingly excited!

CLIMBING WALLI looked at the timetable and saw we were doing outside climbing first. I didn’t mind at all. But when we got there I looked up at the climbing wall towering over me and took a big gulp. My knees started to wobble, I realised I was terrified. I realised I was safe by leaning forward on my seat to show I couldn’t fall. So then I zoomed up like a rocket.IZZY GOVER

As I walked into a new chalet the sound of witty banter completely overwhelmed me, giving me a spark of joy.

TRAPEZEAnxiety churned in my stomach as I squinted at the 50 foot trapeze towering above me like a telegraph pole. “No” I thought. “No, no, no!” It was spitting by the time I started to mount the pole, it was trembling under me. I got to the top, having to untangle the rope a couple of times, my knees knocking together, my arms shaking. I took a deep breath as I hung in mid-air for a couple of seconds then victory flooded around me. I did it! I felt overwhelmed with joy, the feeling! Have you felt like that before?FABIA BUTLER LAPLACE

As I climbed up the lofty trapeze pole my legs turned into jelly. As soon as I reached the top my life flashed before my eyes. I jumped but fell, luckily I was holding onto my life. Natalie (who was our group leader for that activity) told me to let go of the bar. I was relieved about getting down.SOPHIA MYATT WELLS

ABSEILINGOn the abseiling wall I felt nauseous. They hooked me on like it will never let me go, like a python around my waist. I was on the edge, it was like I was going to fall off the edge of the world. Off I go. I slipped and fell face first on the wall for a minute. I was dangling by the rope. I was trying to get back to the wall. I push off from the wall and I was back on track. I finally got to the bottom and slipped and fell on my bottom. It was electrifying. But I still hate abseiling!ABBIE CLANCY

At the top of the abseiling tower I felt awesome. I hooked myself in, leant back off the as tall as the sky abseiling tower. Then she started to lower me down. I started my descent and I was super-fast so I got down to the bottom within seconds. It was so fun.LUKE FLETCHER

I felt dazed yet lost in my own thoughts feeling liberated that I conquered the abseiling wall.

CHALET FUNIn our cosy but messy chalet I was hiding under Fabia’s annoyingly stuffy pillows and duvet to make her jump. Izzy and Katy were in on it too. Izzy called Fabia in and asked her if she could get her scrawny old hairbrush. Surprisingly Fabia didn’t notice I was hiding. Fabia slowly bent down and was searching for Izzy’s hairbrush; then I suddenly sprung up and shouted “whhhoooo”. Fabia screamed for her life! She was screaming for 5 minutes: in fact it was only 30 seconds! Katy, Izzy and I were laughing hysterically for 1 minute. That was my favourite night!ROBYN ROOT

Year 6 go

10pm, Monday 4th August 2014

Please join us in Henfield as we commemorate this event.

A multi-denominational service will be held at St Peter’s Church at 9.15pm, all are very welcome. We will then proceed through the footpaths, with muffled bells, to the War Memorial in Cagefoot Lane. Please bring torches or protected candles.

At 10pm the lights and candles around the Memorial will be extinguished; the Last Post will be sounded, the Standard lowered and WWII veterans will light a single candle. After the Reveille and prayers for the fallen a commemorative wreath will be laid to conclude this simple ceremony.

Please join us for the service or at the War Memorial.

Many people get back pain, neck pain, or other musculoskeletal pains, and at times need help to cope with these. Back pain and neck pain

can be caused by many different issues, and finding the right way to relieve them is important. Most people endure one or more episodes of back pain in their lives. Approximately half of these people are likely to have a second episode within two years. Most back pain is mechanical. This means that the joints or soft tissues of the spine are damaged. It is not usually serious and does not involve nerves or a serious disease process. It may come on suddenly and resolve quickly. However, for some people it continues. Other types of back pain can involve nerves or damage to the discs and may result in pain radiating to the leg, pins and needles, numbness or even muscle weakness. The spine is made up of segments of bone called vertebra. Between these are discs and joints allowing movement and shock absorbance. These vertebrae are held together by strong ligaments and powerful muscles, and allow us to achieve many physical tasks, from playing strenuous sport, to dancing, gardening and much more. It is quite difficult to damage the spine, but when we do the source of pain needs to be identified and an effective treatment implemented.Where does Chiropractic fit into this?Chiropractors are trained to assess, diagnose and manage back pain, neck pain and many other joint, muscle or ligament problems. They undergo a minimum of four years degree-level training and are regulated by law requiring them to work within stringent ethical and professional

codes of practice. On visiting a chiropractor, the chiropractor will discuss the problem, take a history of the person’s current and past health issues, and perform a physical examination. This enables the chiropractor to establish the diagnosis. Sometimes further tests may be required including x-rays or MRI scans. After explaining the cause of the problem and the treatment options, the chiropractor may use hands on treatments such as gentle spinal manipulation or mobilization techniques. These treatments are designed to improve the movement of stiff or tight joints. Other treatments may include stretching, electrotherapy, acupuncture/dry needling and lifestyle advice. If chiropractic care is unlikely to help then the chiropractor may refer the patient to a GP or other healthcare professional. Some people with recurring back pain may benefit from regular, supportive chiropractic care to reduce the likelihood of further episodes. Chiropractic may also help migraines, headaches arising from neck problems, and other musculoskeletal pain.At Henfield chiropractic clinic we offer a free chiropractic check. This fifteen minute talk, introduces people to chiropractic, and helps decide whether chiropractic may help their pain. There is no obligation to take up treatment.John Pursglove, MSc (Chiropractic), BSc(Hons), DC, MRCC, Chiropractor. For more information contact Henfield Chiropractic Clinic, Furners Lane, Henfield, BN5 9HS, or call 01273 494680. www.henfieldchiroclinic.co.uk

It’s break time; the staff room smells of coffee and cake,In the midst of it all a big decision is at stake.Shakespeare? Fairy Tale? Or American dance and song? The bell’s about to ring; we haven’t got long!

But soon the clues are scattered about the school,A production of High School Musical is coming to the hall! The auditions are announced and preparations begin,Get out the microphone and start to sing!

Miss Page and Mrs Palma have decisions to be madeWho will play Troy or Gabriella or work backstage? The roles are cast and weekly rehearsals begin,Sleeves are rolled up and we’re getting stuck in!

There’s costumes and make-up; painting and props,This all-American drama is going to rock! The hall is alight with cheer-leading and songs,Behind the doors, painting and props are hurrying along.

Lots of deep breaths as there’s so much to prepare,“It’s the most amazing feeling being up there!”Nerves are jangling as the scenery is drying;“Don’t paint over the lines”, Mrs Searles is crying!

The weeks pass as preparations move on,“There’s not enough material for the final song!”“We need more mobile phones!” is the cry put out,“Has anyone got pom poms or an hour to spare?” they shout!

Children are involved from the front stage to the scenes behind,

Words to describe the tension are becoming hard to find.

Where ever you look in these last and final days,There’s singing, dancing and a whole new stage!

The boys are practising their basketball skills,Girls are cheering and shouting with loud shrills The leading characters are finalising their scenes,The props are ready and costumes are pristine.

The smiles on the faces of the excited cast,As they admire the work of the backstage class,The curtain is ready to open to the school,We can’t wait for St Peter’s rendition of High School Musical!

St Peter’s year 5 and 6 cricket team were victori-ous in the now infamous Henfield Cricket Team Tournament, held on the common last month.

Captain, Toby Bloomfield, led the team to a 51 run victory over Ashurst and an impressive 21 run win against local rivals Steyning. This is the fifth consecu-tive year that Henfield’s primary school team have beaten off local competition to claim the plate tro-phy. Impressive performances by all 10 players from St Peter’s were seen by a magnificent crowd as they enjoyed the summer sun. Bowlers, Otto Schluter; Morgan Standing; Josh Cridland; Cameron King and Ben Neale managed to see off many of the opposition batsmen with striking individual and team displays.Top runs were scored by Cameron, Toby and Imi Os-bourne who all scored in excess of 15 runs each, but one of the highlights of the day was the ‘diving’ ability of Sumi Slaughter whose acrobatics saved 6 definite 4 ball shots!Ben, Sid Hamilton and Rufus Crawley put in excep-tional fielding performances catching lofting shots and avoiding certain runs for the opposition. “The supportive crowd were extremely encouraging as the St Peter’s team started to pull away,” said one of two female team members, Imi. “Smiles were seen by everyone as 4s were being smashed across the field and wickets stumped” added Sumi. “All in all it was a funky-dory victory” giggled the girls as they returned to admire their gleaming trophy. Thanks go to Mr Chick, head of sport at St Peter’s; the volunteer umpires and all those involved in henfield Cricket club for their continued and much appreciated assistance on and off the pitch.Imi Osbourne and Sumi Slaughter.

Sizzling success for cricketers on the common

WHAT DO YOU DREAM ABOUT? Falling over.

“I always wake up with a start!”

After an hour-long interview with Jonathan Underwood of Hawthorn Veterinary Surgeries, 13 children from the St Peter’s gifted writers club

have written a feature article about his life. After ten years post GCSE of studying for his veteri-nary qualifications, Jonathan started his career down-under in Australia where treating kangaroos and par-rots was part of his everyday practice. A few years on from that, Jonathan has now settled into his role as the proprietor and vet in the Henfield and Partridge Green practices of Hawthorn Veterinary Surgeries. For most people, seeing cows give birth and being faced with poorly kangaroos would be enough to put you off working with animals ever again. But when asked how many animals he treats in a year Jonathan proudly calculated that if he sees approximately 25 in a day and he works around 250 days in a year, then he probably treats around 6,250 animals a year – phew! That aside, it still doesn’t mean that embarrassing moments escape him. In his early days of working he found it hard to remember all the names of his customers and introduced himself to be people he’d already met before! He also accidentally stabbed him-self with an animal vaccination once (but he asked us not to tell you!). Fortunately, Jonathan has a great sense of humour and can laugh at his embarrassing moments. His worst nightmare would be to lose an animal in his care – sometimes they can get upset visiting the vets and try to escape. No windows are allowed to be open! When asked if he could treat an elephant or an ant, he politely told us that he could possibly put an ant out of its misery, but an elephant would probably be a step too far in terms of knowing how to handle one. With three cats of his own at home, Jonathan is more than happy to stick to the ‘normal’ animals he gets to treat. Dogs are the most popular animal treated at Hawthorn’s, closely followed by cats. He didn’t men-tion how many of his favourite animal – a sheep – he had through the doors on a daily basis though! Jonathan has treated the pets of many famous people including actors, sportsmen and even singer Adele, who with her treasured little pooch and entourage of PR people, was a customer when she lived locally. She wore dark glasses to disguise herself, unbeknown that reception staff didn’t recognise her anyway! When talking about his many and varied customers, it is clear that Jonathan is a man dedicated to his work. He clearly considers the ethics of his role and told his reporters that he would always consider treating any animal that was put before him: he has treated iguanas, lizards, fish and the weirdest breeds of cats and dogs. And they say you should never work with animals or children!Interview and write-up by: Amon Iida-Bowers, Rufus Crawley, Robyn Root, Lily Piper, Alayna Corbett, Sophie Timmins, Emily Katz, Megan Blundell, Suzanne Finley, Matilda Lee, Cherry Ellis, Morgann Swaine and Donna Appleton.

It’s a vet’s life!

RED OAKSCelebrating life through a quality care home

Red Oaks, The Hooks, Henfield, West Sussex, BN5 9UY

WHEN ALL AROUND ARE LOSING THEIR HEADS…

For further information please call us on 01273 493043or visit www.barchester.com/redoaks

8 o’clock on a bright sunny Monday morning and the home manager calls for a managers meeting.

“In case of any kind or emergency Red Oaks has in place a Business Continuity Plan. This basically helps staff with guidance and next steps for almost every eventuality”

On this particular Monday morning, which was becoming increasingly less sunny we were asked to put the plan to test.

The scenario was that a chip pan had been left on overnight and had caused extensive smoke damage to the main kitchen. Of course this hadn’t really happened, but we had to pretend. The kitchen was of course out of bounds!

Without an oven to use we decided it was time for a BBQ, and with fresh food delivered and undamaged stocks from our freezer a bountiful feast of fish and meat was prepared. The residents were amazed and complimentary about how calmly the day was dealt with andhow little disruption there was. The best thing of all was that having to use paper plates meantNO WASHING UP!!!

PROMS IN THE PARK ONCE AGAIN VISITED RED OAKS. With favourable weather and beautiful surroundings people again turned out in their hundreds for the evening full of Pomp and Circumstance that we’ve come to expect.

Pimms flowing and flags waving, we really do live in a Land Of Hope and Glory!

It is a sad fact of life that tax affects everyone – and age does not exempt children

from paying tax. Even babies are liable if they have enough income! Like adults, children are al-lowed to ‘earn’ a certain amount each year tax free. Their Personal Allowance

for 2014/15 is £10,000, the same as adults. They will only pay tax if their income exceeds £10,000 in the Tax Year to 5 April 2015. Many children don’t have earnings as such of course, so their allowance is applied to their income from other sources, such as savings and investment income. If the return they get on their savings and investments is less than the Per-sonal Allowance, they won’t have to pay tax.Tax credits don’t reduce the amount of tax you pay; instead they are means-tested benefits designed to provide extra money for people bringing up children, workers with a disability or workers on lower incomes. They are separate from Child Benefit, upon which you may have to pay a tax charge if you or your partner’s income exceeds £50,000. There are two types of tax credit: Working Tax Credit (WTC); and Child Tax Credit (CTC). You might be eligible for one or both, but whether you qualify and how much you receive depends on both your household circumstances at the time you make the claim and your income in the previous year. To make sure your children don’t pay tax unneces-sarily, you should complete HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) form R85 when you open an account in their name. If you haven’t done this and your child is pay-ing tax for which they are not liable, you can reclaim it by completing form R40. You can get an R85 direct from your bank or building society. Alternatively, both forms are available on the HMRC website, www.hmrc.gov.uk

Be aware, however, that if you give your children mon-ey and it earns more than £100 a year before tax in interest (or £200 if both parents give money), all this income (not just the income over £100) will be taxed as if it were your own. The £100 limit applies to in-come from gifts from parents only, not from other fam-ily members. If income from your gift is likely to breach the £100 limit, then you should put your gifts in a tax-free investment. This can be a Child Trust Fund (CTF) if you opened one before December 2010, or a tax free Junior ISA. The 2014/15 annual limit is £4,000. Contributing to a pension on behalf of your child is another tax-efficient saving option, but be aware that your child cannot access the money until they reach the minimum age for drawing a pension. Up to £3,600 a year including tax relief can be paid into a pension for your child during the 2014/15 tax year. Because 20% tax relief will be added to any contribution you make, you only have to pay £2,880 to get the maxi-mum contribution paid into your child’s pension. The tax breaks associated with a workplace nursery could save you a substantial amount of money. If you pay for childcare, you may be eligible for some tax and exemptions. If your employer provides a work-place nursery, you won’t pay tax or National Insurance on any of the benefit. If your employer offers childcare vouchers or otherwise helps with the cost of childcare and you are a basic rate taxpayer, you won’t pay tax or National Insurance on the first £55 a week in 2014-15. The £55 limit applies regardless of how many chil-dren you have, but it does apply to both parents, so you could get up to £110 a week in all. The childcare must be provided by an approved or registered per-son (such as a registered child minder), and the ben-efit must be available to all staff. If your employer provides childcare vouchers it may offer these through a salary sacrifice arrangement, whereby it will deduct the amount you wish to claim from your salary in exchange for the voucher, which you give to your childcare provider. If you claim the full amount and are a basic rate taxpayer, you could save £900 a year. However, new claimants that are higher rate taxpayers now face restrictions on how much they can receive tax free. For 40% taxpayers the limit is £28 per week and for 45% taxpayers it is £25 a week. In the 2013 Budget, Chancellor George Os-borne announced a new system of childcare vouchers worth up to £1,200 a year for working parents. Details have yet to be announced but the new vouchers are expected to start in October 2015.Paul SamrahFor further advice on this or other business issues, contact Paul Samrah on 01737 781546 or email [email protected]
