April is the perfect month to feature a wonderful local charity, Court Meadow Riding for the Disabled. Mainly because our photographer Amanda Lucas was able to photograph the children outside, where they were enjoying their lesson at the Albourne Equestrian Centre in the spring sunshine. This is the group’s new home since moving from Ditchling just over a year ago. They are actively seeking new volunteer members to help keep the children riding; if you’d like to get involved please look at our article on page 26. We had such a fun morning, we came away inspired and smiling, we think you will too.

We were sad to hear that our local independent councillor at Horsham District Council Sheila Matthews has decided not to stand in the 2015 elections. As many of you will know, Sheila has worked tirelessly for Henfield over many years and has been instrumental in pushing forward some great community projects in the village, we are very grateful to her for making Henfield a better place to live. Thank you for your enormous efforts and enjoy your well-earned retirement Sheila, we have a feeling you’ll soon find plenty to do!

Next month we’re featuring the very new, very shiny, very swanky Henfield Tennis Club pavilion. There are lots of positive changes happening, built on by the dedicated coaching team, with plenty of good news about youth tennis and some exciting achievements. Time to dust off those rusty rackets!

Enjoy April issue,

LEARN TO RUN The Henfield Joggers ‘Start Running/Learn to Run’ course starts on Wednesday 8 April. It’s an eight-week jog/walk programme that

is aimed at taking someone from being new to running to being able to complete a 5k run without stopping. The sessions are led by a certified Run England ‘Leadership in Run’ fitness coach and meet at Henfield Leisure Centre before going out around the footpaths and maybe even trails around Henfield. The process is coached along the lines of walking/jogging for set periods, starting off with more walking than jogging, then building up each week so that at the end of eight weeks the ratio is all jogging (gently at a pace suitable for all).Naturally just one session each week won’t be enough, so this requires commitment to continue on a personal basis in between the coached sessions. What we provide is structure, motivation, feedback, humour and group therapy! Don’t underestimate the group benefit: many of us started exactly this way and have gone on to 10k’s, half and full marathons, even ultra marathons. But lets not get carried away! You’ll get out of this what you put in. We simply understand how everyone feels when starting out: daunted. You’re not alone – and of

DAY CENTRE FUTURE SECURED!After a year of uncertainty, the future of Henfield Day Centre has been secured under an agreement reached by Henfield Community Partnership (HCP) with West Sussex County Council. The existing specialist services for people living with dementia will be retained but the centre will also offer a much wider range of services to promote living well in later life. Carers and other family members will be able to obtain support as well. The community-led initiative is seen as the way forward for social services at a time when the County Council is subject to heavy spending cuts. “Our aim has been to retain local services and jobs. West Sussex has been extremely supportive of our ideas and we are working together to make the plans happen,” said HCP volunteer Steve Bailey. “The centre will become a terrific asset for Henfield”.Legal processes are still underway and it is expected to take another four months before the centre transfers to community leadership. In the meantime, there is a great deal of preparation to be done, including plans to redecorate the centre. A local care charity, Impact Initiatives, is partnering with HCP and will manage the expanded services on behalf of the community. If you are interested in learning more about the plans or would like to get involved, please contact Steve by emailing [email protected] or telephone 01273 494824.Steve Bailey

MP OPENS HENFIELD’S NEW DEMENTIA CAFÉArundel and South Downs MP Nick Herbert officially opened the Purple Angel Memory Cafe in Henfield in March. The new dementia cafe, the second in the country after Torbay, has been set up to encourage families affected by dementia or memory loss to get together.Mr Herbert was invited to open the cafe at the Evangelical Free Church in Henfield by Alex and Jennie Cowan-Morrison who have established the Know Dementia charity. The MP praised the charity and thanked the local agencies and volunteers who care for dementia patients. He then declared the cafe open before cutting a cake made specially for the occasion by The Artisan Bakehouse in Ashurst. Jennie Morrison-Cowan thanked their sponsors, including Saxon Weald Housing Association, Sussex Police and Horsham Rotary Club, for their financial support, and paid tribute to the many individuals who have helped to make the cafe possible. Know Dementia have worked with the local community through setting up awareness campaigns and identifying dementia friendly businesses. They have also established popular activity groups to help those living with dementia and their supporters. The need for dementia services is growing. People are living for longer and dementia diagnosis is increasing. There are an estimated 13,500 dementia patients in West Sussex and the number is set to double in the next 30 years.Mr Herbert said: “I was delighted to open the cafe and think this is a tremendous initiative, providing much-needed local support for dementia patients

and their families. The number of people at the inaugural event showed why this facility is needed. I would like to thank Know Dementia, their sponsors and volunteers for their hard working in getting the cafe off the ground.”The next Purple Angel Memory Cafe will be held on Saturday 11 April , 2pm - 4pm, and every other Saturday afternoon. For more information call 01273 494300 or e-mail [email protected] Taylor

HENFIELD PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

Henfield Parish Council would like to extend its thanks to Southern Piling for storing a large quantity of salt on its behalf for a period of around 18 months. This salt is now deposited in eight bins that are now strategically placed around the village and will be opened up to residents in the event of snow or adverse freezing conditions. Thanks also to West Sussex County Council for providing the bins to the village free of charge. You will no doubt now be aware that the Parliamentary, District and Parish Elections, will be taking place on Thursday 7 May. Anyone wishing to stand as a Parish Councillor has until 4pm on Thursday 9 April to submit his or her nomination forms to the Senior Electoral Services Officer at Horsham District Council. These forms must be hand delivered and can be obtained from the Henfield Parish Office or Electoral Services at Horsham DC.I would personally like to pass on a huge vote of thanks to Sheila Matthews who will be retiring in May as one of Henfield’s District Councillors. Sheila has been a District Councillor for the last 20 years and prior to that for 12 years as a Henfield Parish Councillor, including a spell as Chair of

NEW LEADER FOR 1140 SQUADRON AIR CADETS A new chapter has begun at 1140 (Steyning) Squadron Air Cadets with a change of leadership. He will be missed by all.To mark the occasion Flt Lt Emsley handed over the Squadron ceremonial sword (supplied by the Squadron Vice-President Robert Pooley of Pooley Swords, Shoreham) to his successor Flt Lt Tina Tucker. Dave said: “It has been an honour and a privilege to command 1140 over last nearly five years. As a team we have grown a strong and prosperous unit and I look forward to see them continue to prosper under the command of Flt Lt Tina Tucker. It has been hard work but I have

enjoyed see the cadet grow in confidence, gain new skills and have fun. The Air Cadets offer some fantastic opportunities to young people and I encourage anyone interested in joining as staff or cadet to contact the Squadron” Flt Lt Tucker, along with WO Kev Tucker, will now take up the exciting and challenging role, joining the existing staff team in keeping the Squadron running smoothly and ensuring the cadets take every opportunity available to them to gain the maximum achievement and enjoyment from their time in the Corps. The Air Training Corps is open to boys and girls

CALLING ALL EX-SERVICEMEN AND WOMENAfter the Second World War, nearly every town and village had a branch of the Royal British Legion. As the number of branch members dwindled, branches amalgamated so they could still offer the welfare and support promised by the RBL. The Sussex Weald Branch now encompasses Henfield, Olney, Cowfold, Partridge Green, Shermanbury, Small Dole and West Grinstead. Our presence in some of these locations has not been sufficient in recent years, but without representation from each village it is very difficult to offer the welfare and support that is sometimes required to ex-service personnel and their dependants. If you would like to join the Sussex Weald Branch of the RBL, find out more information, or you know someone who requires support, please contact Geoff Case on 01403 864662 or Renford Marsden on 01403 864117.Michael Gething

AN AUDIENCE WITH HENRY VIIIThe High Chamberlain has been instructed to command you to attend an audience with the kingly-founder of the Church of England. This is to take place in the Parish Church of St Peter in Henfield on Tuesday 21 April at 7.30 of the clock in the evening.Responsibility for the mounting of this very special occasion lies with The Friends of St Peter’s Church, which has a fine reputation for their promotion of topical events. The recent televising of ‘Wolf Hall’ (adapted for the small screen from the book by Hilary Mantell), has more than doubled the bookings of ‘Henry’ (Tony Harris). For three years he resided at Hampton Court Palace, where he was encountered as a knowledgeable and suitably costumed guide. In common with royal patrons and presidents, as well as huge crowds of supporters at Warwick Castle and Wembley Arena, you will learn of Henry’s lifelong quest to produce an heir to the throne and hence his necessity for six wives.Admission by ticket at a cost of £8 (Members of The Friends £7) to be had from Jasmines Florists or via The Friends ticket-line on 01273 492294.Anthony Abbott

QUIZ NIGHTThe Henfield Lions are holding a charity quiz evening on Saturday 9 May in support of the Youth Club. There will be a cash bar available and nibbles on the tables as well as a cash prize for the winning team. Please come along and help raise much needed funds for the Youth Club which provides a fantastic facility for the young people of Henfield. David Pryor

RETAIL VOLUNTEERING WITH ST BARNABAS HOUSEWith 11 charity shops across Worthing, Adur, Arun and Henfield, an array of volunteers is needed to help run the shops. A new shop supervisor post has been introduced to ensure the shops can remain open and trading if a manager is not present. Shop supervisor volunteers are given full training and will be responsible for running the shop when the manager is away. Duties include holding keys, cashing up and banking and looking after the volunteers in the shop as well as keeping customers happy and ensuring the stock is replenished through the day.

Julie Angell is one of the volunteers who took up the new role of shop supervisor at the Henfield shop. She said: “I had previous retail experience, and my friend volunteers at the shop, so encouraged me to volunteer, too. The supervisor role is incredibly important as it means the shop can remain open if there was unexpected absence, or when people are on holiday. It would be a fantastic opportunity for someone to develop their skills in retail and help further their career.” If you are looking to gain retail experience, we also have other shop volunteer roles available across East and West Sussex. From window dressing and sorting stock to cashing up, there are plenty of duties and tasks to keep you busy.So what’s the next step? You can pop into one of our shops or our Retail Distribution Centre in Worthing to find out more. Or you can contact our Voluntary Services Team by phone on 01903 706315 or email [email protected] and we will send you an application pack.

GREAT BRITISH FISH AND CHIP SUPPER – FRIDAY 15 MAY 2015Want to eat Fish and Chips, while raising money for charity? Hold a fish and chip supper on Friday 15 May 2015 whilst raising awareness of spinal cord injury and supporting Spinal Injury Association’s (SIA) vital services. You can hold a fish and chip supper in your own home, at work or hold a larger supper at your local community centre. By inviting eight friends and asking them to donate an additional £5 means you will raise at least £40 from your supper but we will also give you additional fundraising ideas to raise even more money for SIA.In 2015 we want to make the batter matter and raise £40,000 from everyone holding suppers. The money raised from the suppers will help the Spinal Injuries Association offer support to individuals who become paralysed and their families, from the moment a spinal injury occurs, and for the rest of their lives by providing services and publications which enable and encourage paralysed people to rebuild lives after spinal cord injury. Every year in the UK over 1,000 people experience a spinal cord injury and there are an estimated 40,000 spinal cord injured people in the UK alone. BEATING THE BOUNDS OF SHERMANBURYShermanbury Parish Council and the Rector of St Giles, Paul Doick, are inviting local residents to join them in a ceremony of ‘Beating the Bounds’ on Sunday 10 May at 2.30pm, followed by tea and home made cakes. Beating the bounds is an ancient tradition going back to Anglo-Saxon times and may have had its origins in the Roman festival of Terminalia, held in honour of Terminus, the god of landmarks. It was carried out so that inhabitants knew the extent of the parish, before maps were available. The locals, led by the vicar, would walk the boundary of the parish checking that the boundary stones or markers were in the right place and ensuring that information regarding the location of the boundary was passed on to future generations. During the procession, the boundary markers were beaten with sticks, usually birch or willow. Sometimes a young boy was beaten or held upside down and his head brought into contact with the boundary stone to ensure he remembered where it was! It was a way of strengthening the community and giving it a sense of place. The aim of the current revival is to increase the sense of community cohesion between the two parts of the parish, Wineham and Shermanbury. Rather than walk the entire boundary of Shermanbury (which is more than 12 miles and runs along several busy roads and across private farmland), the bridleway between the A281 and Frylands Lane (also known as The Grove), has

been chosen as a family-friendly route of about one mile. This route connects Wineham and Shermanbury. A ceremonial beating of markers will take place at each end, and refreshments will be available outside the church so that people can linger and chat to their neighbours. If you haven’t been inside the beautiful Grade II* Church of St Giles, it will be open when we are enjoying our refreshments. Join us for a relaxing afternoon amble in the Shermanbury countryside with views over the River Adur and bring the family and the dog! Put the date in your diary and bring your own stick!Angela Lightburn

WEST SUSSEX GOOD NEIGHBOURS SCHEMERoyal Voluntary Service is a voluntary organisation that enriches the lives of older people and their families across Britain. We support older people by giving time and practical help to help them get the best from life. Our volunteers – ordinary men and women of all ages and ethnicities – love spending time with the people they help. Through them, we want to help create a society where everyone feels valued and involved whatever their age. Our overriding aim is to provide the support that enables older people to live independent and fulfilled lives – we want everybody to matter, regardless of how old they are. When friends and family live too far away to make regular contact, Royal Voluntary Service can provide a little bit of company and friendly social contact at home through our befriending services. This is available as part of our ‘Good Neighbours’ service and it helps to reduce feelings of loneliness and increases motivation and confidence. The scheme in West Sussex provides a vital service for older people who might otherwise not see anyone else for days on end; but we urgently need more volunteers to get involved to fulfil the growing demand for help. As a Good Neighbours volunteer, you need a friendly personality and an understanding of

the needs of older people. You will provide companionship and a helping hand to the growing number of older people in your local community who wish to maintain their independence by living in their own homes, but struggle to get out by themselves. Volunteers simply pop in at a convenient time to check that elderly neighbours are in good health and spirits. It’s an ideal opportunity if you want to use your caring skills and contribute to the work of the charity by enriching the lives of older, vulnerable people. Our volunteers love the fact they are helping in their local area and that they are giving something back and really making a difference whilst gaining valuable skills and experience at the same time. Volunteering doesn’t have to take up a lot of time – just an hour or two a week can mean so much to older people who find it difficult to get out. Loneliness and isolation can have a devastating impact on a person’s health and wellbeing, but you could make a real difference to their quality of life. If you would like to do something amazing today and volunteer then please get in touch either by phone on 01293 228060 or by email at [email protected] Visit www.royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk/westsussex to get more information.Corrine Clarke

Information Standard-approved information on IPF at the point of diagnosis, and all patients to have access to a specialist interstitial lung disease (ILD) nurse to help them navigate their care. Greta Coleman said: “IPF kills so many people every year in the UK – and the number has been rising for decades – yet still no one knows what causes it, and still there is no cure. I hope this launch will help us raise awareness about this terrible disease.”Nick Herbert said: “It was a pleasure to meet Greta at the Commons and to learn about this devastating lung condition. My constituent made a huge effort to be at this event and I hope she feels that it was worthwhile. Certainly I am now much better informed about IPF. Clearly we do need to improve awareness about this disease, which severely impacts the lives of those affected, their families and carers.Michelle Taylor

MP MEETS HENFIELD LADY AT BRITISH LUNG FOUNDATION EVENTArundel and South Downs MP Nick Herbert met a Henfield resident at the Commons last in February to hear about a lung disease and the impact it has on thousands of sufferers. Greta Coleman travelled to the Westminster to join a British Lung Foundation event to raise awareness of the little-known condition that affects her husband, David.IPF, or Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, is a fatal lung disease that causes scarring of the lungs. It is estimated that around 5,000 people a year in the UK die of the disease, more than better known diseases such as leukaemia, yet it remains poorly understood, with limited treatments and no cure. The disease often acts with devastating speed, with barely half of patients surviving the three years after diagnosis. The British Lung Foundation gathered IPF patients, carers, and MPs at the launch in order to raise the profile of the disease. Mr Herbert discussed IPF and its impact on patients with Greta, who cares for her husband David. The MP also discussed the care and support available in his constituency for IPF patients. The report is an important step for IPF campaigners and calls for all those providing IPF services to follow NICE guidance, all patients to be given

April 2015, more people will benefit. If you die before the age of 75 your family can inherit your pension tax-free. If you die after age 75, withdrawals from the pension or payments to a spouse under a joint-life annuity are subject to income tax. Lump sum payments will be taxed at 45 per cent until April 2016.

Pension contributions: With the announcements focusing mainly on pension flexibility at retirement, we should not lose sight of those continuing to work towards their retirement and the importance of making pension contributions along the way. There are multiple changes coming into effect in April 2015. I would urge those looking to plan for retirement, or who are due to retire to ensure they fully understand the changes to help them make the right decisions. This will ensure they have the level of income they need to enjoy their retirement years.Pension advice and planning is one of the areas that I can help my clients reach their goals alongside other areas of independent financial advice such as mortgages, protection, savings and investments.

What the imminent pension reforms could mean for your retirementWith the recent changes announced by the Chancellor concerning defined contribution pensions, individuals are faced with more options than ever to think about their retirement income. With much more flexibility and choices to be made, the need for expert pension advice has never been greater.

Many of my clients have been asking me what are the things they need to know about the reforms. The key areas I have been supporting them to understand are:

New found flexibility and freedom:Individuals can now choose to withdraw part of or their whole total pension fund, this needs to be done in a considered manner as there can be significant tax implications if the wrong choice is made.

Annuities and their role in pension planning: These can still play an important role in retirement planning. They can continue to provide people with a guaranteed income and offer certainty, or they can be used as part of a wider more varied portfolio of income streams.

The need to have a mix of income streams:The changes announced in the pension reforms not only offer individuals greater flexibility when considering retirement income but also a more diverse selection of income sources. To this extent it is important that individuals are utilising their tax allowances and reliefs where available to maximise the amount of income they receive.

Inheritance Tax Friendly:

Pension pots can be inherited free of tax in limited cases but from the new tax year beginning 6th

It’s a beautiful March morning and it feels like the first day of spring, with the sun almost warm enough for jumpers rather than coats and scarves. I arrive at the

Albourne Equestrian Centre to find the immaculately swept yard a hive of activity. Ponies, half fluffy and half cleanly clipped, of varying sizes and colours but all of equally placid temperament, are being tacked-up and led towards the outdoor arena. Volunteers and instruc-tors wearing navy jackets and fleeces embellished with the Court Meadow Riding for the Disabled logo busy themselves with preparations for their first arrivals. It’s not long before minibuses arrive, carrying children from two local schools, Woodlands Meed in Burgess Hill and LVS in Hassocks. The excitement and anticipation is tangible as they don hard hats and make their way to the waiting ponies, greeting them with warm smiles and hugs. The weekly Thursday morning trip to Albourne Equestrian centre is a real highlight for these children, who all have learning difficulties and some physical disabilities. To sit up high, enjoy the freedom of movement and synergy with a living animal, to gain confidence and be equal with others, to learn a skill and to improve balance and physical strength – these are the benefits which the children may not even notice. For them, it’s just pure and simple joy.I have no doubt that there’s a lot of work involved in the background. The morning is running like clockwork, each immaculately turned-out pony is assisted by three volunteers; two to walk next to the rider, and one to lead. The ponies are exceptionally kind and placid, their ‘star’ pony is Banner, owned

by volunteer Sue Coote. Banner (pictured top right) has been a stalwart of the RDA with an incredible 20 years service and counting - he is much loved by the children and volunteers alike. The children are helped as much as they need – but they strive to be as independent as possible on the horse. Many are experienced riders, who have been coming to Court Meadow RDA since they were just three years old. One rider, 15 year old Charlotte, is clearly an accomplished horsewoman who is naturally at ease in the saddle. Her confidence is clear and she needs very little assistance. I chat with Anna Kerr, Chairman of the group, and Carolyn Hawkins, secretary. Their organisational skills are exceptional and they need to be, to

arrange enough volunteers to allow the 42 regular riders to attend the weekly sessions as well as the smaller Wednesday groups of very young children. If the weather is bad then the children have to ride in the smaller indoor school which means less ponies and a little more juggling. They have both been involved with RDA for some years. Originally at the Ditchling Stud, Court Meadow RDA became homeless when land was sold for development and the stud closed. Albourne Equestrian Centre came to their rescue and they’ve not looked back – they love their new home and the Centre have been incredibly generous and supportive.“To be involved with RDA is incredibly fulfilling,” said Anna. “To watch the progression of a child, a child who often finds it difficult to reach the small milestones that other children find easy, is wonderful. One little boy came to us for the first time. He didn’t speak at all and found communication and expressing his feelings difficult. To see his face break into an enormous smile was a wonderful moment that I’ll never forget – he took to riding like a duck to water.”Carolyn said; “We have 42 volunteers, we’re always looking for more because if we don’t have enough then we would have to turn the children away, which would be terrible. You only have to see their faces to realise what an important part of their education these lessons are. It costs us £16k a year to keep running and provide all the equipment and riding clothing for the children, we rely on the generosity of donations and the support of our fundraising events. It is quite an uphill task to keep running, but it’s so worth it. Not everyone has an equestrian background and they don’t need to; just patience, kindness and to enjoy the company of children and animals.”As we talk, eight of the children are participating in a lesson, which includes games and activities to develop their balance, coordination and physical skills. Inside, another group are learning about pony

care and remembering their last lesson on the names of colours and breeds. As with anything in life, it’s much easier to learn when you’re interested, and these children are enjoying their remembering games as they identify the different ponies. It all goes towards their Personal Progress and Skills for Living certificates.During the summer the fun really starts. The children attend the RDA gymkhana, the Annual Felbridge Fun Day. Then comes the main highlight of the calendar, the ‘RDA Pony Camp’ - where they ride, compete, learn about pony care and play lots of fun games. There are plenty of rosettes and huge beaming smiles.Teacher at Woodlands Meed Sylvie Taylor told me how the children benefit. “These children struggle with so many things, to be able to ride is a great leveller for them. To see them achieve and develop new relationships outside school and their families is very special. The RDA volunteers are so patient, gentle and kind, some of our quietest children really come out of their shells. Many have speech difficulties which make communication harder, and some have autism and anxieties that need to be taken into consideration. The volunteers and instructors have endless patience and always make the children feel special and listened to.”The volunteers all agree that their weekly RDA commit-ment gives them an enormous sense of fulfilment. When Sheila Matthews first moved to Henfield in her twenties somebody told her that she wouldn’t fit in the village because she wore green welling-

tons! But after 32 distinguished years of serving Henfield both as a Parish and a District Councillor, I think it’s safe to say that Sheila is well and truly a part of village life!Sheila has always stood as an Independent Councillor and has taken a pragmatic and sensible approach to local government. Over the years she has been involved in many hard won battles to improve the village life for residents of all ages. Once such scheme is the local bus service for elderly residents: The scheme was the brain child of local resident Eddie O’Reilly, but Sheila was instrumental in helping to set up the service. The scheme has changed over the years, but it is still going strong today, more than 20 years on. Sheila was also influential in securing the planning obligation funds from the Parsonage development for the development of the Youth Club. Sheila was (and still is) a member of the Youth Club committee which made sure that the youth of the village were involved in the design of the new building. She was also involved in the transfer of Holm Garth housing development in Furners Mead to Saxon Weald which are now available for older people on the housing needs list, and also in the successful sell off of the Upper Mead Nursing Home with the retention of 9 NHS beds for and elderly EMI care. More recently she was heavily involved in helping to push through the loan from the District Council

to Henfield Leisure Centre for the development of a soft play area.Sheila was rewarded for her community work with an MBE in 2008: “That was a fantastic experience, although I couldn’t tell anybody about it for a while. I remember travelling back from a holiday and seeing my name in the papers – it was a humbling experience.”As well as work for the Parish and District Councils, Sheila has also been the Chairman of the West Sussex Town and Parish Council Association and she was a founder member of the Henfield West Residents Association. As mum to three children and hands on grandmother to five grandchildren she has spent many a year doing the school run and also spent seven years on the school Parent Teacher Association!“I’ve had a fantastically fulfilling time since living in Henfield” said Sheila. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time as a councillor and I am grateful to the leaders of Horsham District Council. I would also like to express my deep felt thanks to my partner Mike Morgan for his unstinting support.”Sheila has been an enormously positive force for the village over the years and her energy and enthusiasm will be greatly missed in local politics. On behalf of the village we would like to thank Sheila for all her work in supporting Henfield and helping to make it a better place to live. We wish her a long and happy retirement.Sarah Butler

Using Your Vote: some useful information about the elections on 7 May 2015Who am I voting for?Once every five years you vote for one MP to sit in the UK Parliament in Westminster and represent your constituency. At the general election on 7 May you have one vote to choose a candidate to represent your constituency in the House of Commons. The UK is divided into 650 constituencies, each with one Member of Parliament (MP). Most candidates are from a political party but there can also be independent candidates. Local Council elections are also taking place on the 7 May. You can also vote for between one and three councilors to represent your ward on the local council. Councils are responsible for providing local services and facilities and your elected representatives are elected for four years. How can I find out who the candidates are for the election? To find out who is standing for election you will need to contact your local election office at Horsham District Council on 01403 215126 or www.horsham.gov.uk Where can I get information about candidates? There is no single source of candidate information. To find out about candidates ahead of an election you could visit candidate or political party websites or write to the political parties.Who is elected? The candidate with the most votes is elected: they do not need to get more than half of the votes cast. If there is a tie then the candidate is selected by the drawing of lots (i.e. a method of selection by chance such as tossing a coin or picking a name out of a hat). How do I know which polling site to visit?Residents can only vote at their allocated

Polling Station – this is to reduce electoral fraud. Information about allocated polling stations is printed on the front of each polling card. Additionally, each poll card has a voter registration number on the front. The prefix to this number is the key to which Polling Station residents will have to visit.Residents living in the BN5 postcode will be voting in one of the following polling stations:PPB (Small Dole Parish Ward) Small Dole Village Hall, Henfield Road, Small Dole, Henfield BN5 9XE NW (Henfield Parish Ward)Henfield Village Hall, High Street, Henfield BN5 9DBPPA (Small Dole Parish Ward)Small Dole Village Hall, Henfield Road, Small Dole, Henfield BN5 9XEQD (Woodmancote)Woodmancote Parish Hall, Brighton Road, Woodmancote BN5 9SRWhen are election results announced? This will depend on the individual areas and returning officers. In most areas votes are counted at the close of poll on the Thursday evening, but in some areas votes are counted the next morning. Results will usually be announced as soon as possible after the count has been completed. For more information: www.aboutmyvote.co.uk

‘In my experience men often find it harder to come for counselling than women, and some leave it until they are at crisis point before asking for help. This is an extract from a piece by Matt Haig, a writer who has personal experience of being a man with depression and who puts it so much better than I could.’ -Leasa Langridge

I want to talk about being a man... Men, traditionally, see mental illness as a sign of weakness and are reluctant to seek help. Boys don’t cry. But they do. We do. I do. If you are a man or a woman with mental health problems, you are part of a very large and growing group. Many of the greatest and, well, toughest people of all time have suffered from depression. You are no less or more of a man or a woman or a human for having depression than you would be for having cancer or cardiovascular disease or a car accident. So what should we do? Talk. Listen.

Encourage talking. Encourage listening. Keep adding to the conversation. Stay on the lookout for those wanting to join in the conversation. Keep reiterating, again and again, that depression is not something you “admit to”, it is not something you have to blush about, and it is a human experience. It is not you. It is simply something that happens to you. And something that can often be eased by talking. Words. Comfort. Support. It took me more than a decade to be able to talk openly, properly, to everyone, about my experience. I soon discovered the act of talking is in itself a therapy. Where talk exists, so does hope. © Matt Haig. Extracted from Reasons to Stay Alive, published on 5 March 2015 by Canongate.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT WHAT YOU DOI’m the gym manager at Henfield Leisure Centre and my work is really varied. I create personal fitness programmes for customers (including GP referrals), carry out gym inductions for new starters, act as personal trainer for individuals, lead boot camps and take fitness classes. As well as the fitness side I do general jobs around the Centre.WHY DID YOU DECIDE ON A CAREER IN FITNESS?I’ve always been active since a young age and have always enjoyed keeping fit and staying active throughout the day, so a career in fitness was a really natural progression for me. I’ve been personal trainer for the past six years.WHICH ASPECT OF YOUR JOB DO YOU LIKE BEST?The best part of my job is taking fitness classes and training my clients. Every class is different and every client has different goals, so I never get bored – there’s always something new or something different.HAS ANYONE INSPIRED YOU IN YOUR WORK?All my personal clients inspire me! They inspire me to push myself in challenging them to help them achieve their goals.

PROFILE

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE EVENT IN THE LOCAL CALENDAR?My favourite local event is the Henfield Strongman Competition. It’s a relatively new event but already it’s generating loads of interest. Last September’s competition had a real buzz about it and I can’t wait for this years’ competition, it’s going to be brilliant!CAN YOU GIVE US SOME FITNESS TOP TIPS?Short bursts of high intensity workouts are also great for burning fat and by doing your fitness training in the morning before breakfast, you will increase your fat burning by 15%. You should try to change your workout routine every six to eight weeks to stop you getting into a fitness rut.WHICH FAMOUS PERSON WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO HAVE DINNER WITH, AND WHY?I’d love to have dinner with Usain Bolt – it would be great to chat with one of the greatest sprinters of all time!TELL US A JOKE!What do you call a man with no shins... The Swiss have dominated watchmaking for many years, but local boy Giles Ellis of Schofield Watches is proud to be one of the few companies

spearheading the resurgence of English watchmaking.Born and brought up in Steyning, Giles spent time living in Brighton and Australia, before settling in Henfield. He has an eclectic curriculum vitae that includes graphic design, manufacturing mountain bike components, refurbishing vintage musical instruments and tree surgery! But the one thing that is consistent throughout his career is his passion for whatever he is doing and his attention to detail: “If I do something, I have to do it properly and I put my heart and soul into it” he admitted. Giles came to watchmaking with no formal training in horology, but a passion for design and the desire to create the perfect watch for his lifestyle: “There are some amazing watches out there but with price tags to match so I set out to create the perfect watch for me without any restraints or compromises” he explained. “Watches have their own language and I had to learn what makes a good wrist watch from scratch. You reference a watch throughout the day so you don’t want to be annoyed by its design. You want to be charmed by it every time you look at it. Good design also helps with longevity – you don’t get bored of classic watches!”Once he had a design he was happy with Giles started to look at the manufacturing process. As the minimum batch number for the manufacture of watch dials was 100, this left him with 99 watches to sell and so the Schofield Watch company was born. Launched in 2011, the first Schofield watch

was an instant success, achieving the third year sales figures within the first eight months.Schofield Watches are a unique but quintessentially English boutique brand. You won’t find them in any retail outlets and when you purchase one of the watches, you are admitted to an exclusive club.

The watches have developed a cult following and have been described as “fantastically cool” with “quirky and well executed design”. “When I designed my first watch I put a number of design details in which I didn’t think anyone else would get. But people do understand them and that’s really satisfying” said Giles.Schofield Watches have created a stir in the national and international world of watches with articles appearing in The Times, The Telegraph, Vanity Fair and the International New York Times. But Giles is very proud of his Sussex heritage and each watch dial features the words ‘Sussex England’. “Growing up in Steyning, the South Downs were very much my stomping ground. I’m very influenced by my surroundings and the colour palettes I use in my design are often colours of the South Downs. I’m currently researching Sussex mud colours – I want to get that lovely chalky white colour!”Giles, who lives with his wife Alice and three gorgeous daughters on Southview Terrace, loves Henfield: “Henfield is the perfect village really, it’s very rural, but there are lots of amenities and it has a great community spirit. It’s small enough to be able to get to know people quickly and really I wouldn’t want to live and work anywhere else!”Sarah Butler

The tender process

Submitting a tender is common practice for businesses supplying goods or services to the public sector. Becoming increasingly common is

submitting a tender for business in the private sector. On a very simplistic level, you expect to quote for a job or to explain in writing why you should be given the business. But more formal tenders often apply to bigger jobs or for supply contracts spread over time. Even if you do not win the work, writing a tender can clarify your aims, strengths and weaknesses. It raises your profile with the customer and helps you learn about customers’ needs. You can find out about upcoming contracts and tender opportunities by building contacts with potential customers and by looking at the local and national press, as well as the trade and professional publications in your business sector. Opportunities might arise through networking and picking up ‘intelligence’ from other businesses.Preparing tenders can help you to win big orders, but it can also be time-consuming, cost money and tie up valuable resources. You should obtain the bid documents and go through them line by line. Ensure that you can match the technical, skill and experience requirements. Evaluate how much it will cost, in pounds and time, to prepare the bid. Ask yourself whether the work will fit in with your strategy and positioning of your business. Estimate the costs of fulfilling the contract and whether the return is sufficient. Assess how the contract would affect your other work, staffing and ability to take on other new business. You should also consider how important the potential customer is to your business. Is this a good potential client or one you do not want to offend by not tendering? Try to understand things from the client’s point of view. Many potential clients will be happy to chat things through on an informal basis before you decide to bid. Do not be afraid to ask for a face-to-face meeting or a telephone chat. You should always raise questions by phone or email if the tender documents are unclear for any reason.Once you have decided to tender, you should decide who collates the necessary information and does the research as well as agree on who writes and checks the bid presentation.Always focus on the client - talk about their needs and how you can solve their problems. When you speak about yourself, it is to prove you

have the skills, experience and organisation to fulfil the client’s requirements. Think outside the box and come up with innovative ideas - from alternative ways of doing things to how to tackle possible worries about future maintenance and staffing implications. Value for money and not price alone, decides most bids. Emphasise business benefits, service improvements, risk reduction, low maintenance, quality, reliability, previous satisfied customers etc. It is about helping to ease your client’s workload by relieving them of a burdensome contract.Information within your tender can be disclosed at any time in the future under the Freedom of Information Act. This gives anyone (including your competitors) the general right to see information held by public authorities - including the information in your tender. Therefore you should clearly indicate which information is commercially confidential. If the information is particularly sensitive, you might want to ask for a non-disclosure agreement to be part of any negotiations. Show you have the resources to do the work and a feasible, cost-effective way to meet the client’s needs, to meet deadlines and to respond flexibly to changing situations. Address the potential financial, commercial and legal risks that could cause contract failure. Give details of your team, emphasise their strengths, qualifications and experience. Clients will expect you to summarise your work as a contractor, your past experience and credentials for this job, to explain how you will carry out the work, and how and when the client’s aims will be achieved. You should explain the benefits and value-for-money of your bid, you should detail when and how goods and services are to be delivered, and provide a timetable. You must demonstrate your team’s skills, experience of similar work and their responsibilities if you were to win the contract. You should explain how you will manage the project and provide details of your pricing and any aftercare arrangements within the price. Be practical and identify potential problems without promising what is clearly impossible for you to deliver. Ensure your tender document matches the bid specification and answers all its questions. Summarise your bid and why it answers the client’s needs. Write this last, but put it at the beginning of your tender. Include a covering letter that responds to the bid invitation, summarises your main message and explains

Page 69: BN5 April 15

01273 494002 BN5 MAGAZINE | 69

how the documents are organised. Keep sentences and paragraphs short, punchy and businesslike, use bullet points and headings to break up text. Decide on a consistent typeface, layout and type size - not too small. Make sure everything is standardised. Read everything again. Then get a colleague to read it - for meaning, typing mistakes and omissions. Use appendices for supporting additional information. Have a front cover with project title, date, name of the organisation requesting the tender, and that of your own business. Include a contents page, number paragraphs so material can be easily located and consider getting it bound at a print shop. Either hand-deliver personally or courier the required number of copies of the final tender document to ensure it arrives! Follow up with a courtesy telephone call to confirm safe receipt and to demonstrate your personal concern and involvement. If ultimately your bid fails, ensure you learn for next time by asking for feedback on your tender. Good luck!Paul SamrahFor further advice on this or other business issues, contact Paul Samrah on 01737 781546 or email [email protected]
