FINALS TIME
FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Early in the Stage 1 planning, a
community member put up her hand in a forum and said,
wouldn’t it be great if carers had somwhere to stay with a
patient? That one comment led to the creation of carer
zones, a first for Australian hospitals.
Four years down the track, the carer zones have been
nominated for swag of honours, and this week we found out
that our carer zone poster submission is a finalist for a
prestigious APAC Award.
Here’s a flashback of patient & carer experience manager
Wendy and consumer rep Judith checking out the carer zone
protoype room in 2015.
They looked pretty happy with the sample room back then,
but they’re even happier now!
Preliminary surveys show carer zones improve staff/patient
communication by 94%, significantly reduce anxiety and
improve the hospital experience.
Congratulations to the project team and its partners,
consumers and carers for a job well done.
Regardless of the results next week, you’re winners to us!
DYNAMIC DUO
NEW IDEAS: Matt tests out some prototype furniture for
the new ways of working B2Hub. In the B2Hub, the
workspaces match the type of work we need to do. No-one
“owns” a desk like an open plan office, and there are no hot
desks either. This is a sample of a duo lounge for small
group conversations. It’s comfy, it’s soundproofed and it’s
being road-tested by the staff who will use it to make sure
it’s fit for purpose. Consultation at work!
IF I HAD A HAMMER
HAMMER TIME: Peter and architect Don can’t resist a
closer look at the National Association of Women in
Construction Award, won last month by our architects
Jacobs.

CAN YOU HEAR THE PEOPLE SING?
HIGH STANDARDS: David and Joanne presented at the
recent National Standards Excellence conference on the
BMDH experience of implementing the national standards
in a time of change and expansion. The conference
highlighted the importance of creating a positive workplace
culture to drive the quality and safety agenda, achieved
through strategies such as meaningful staff and community
engagement, collaborative leadership and continued
improvement of the patient experience. Congrats, team,
and glad to see you got the memo about wearing the
project colours!
EXCELLENCE IN HEALTHCARE
ARE YOU CRAFTY?? We are looking for volunteers to participate in Blacktown
Hospital’s first ‘Sew-athon’ sponsored by Bernina, to help us make Fiddle Mats for our patients with dementia.
