OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS FOR TUNGSTEN-HALOGEN LAMPS

LUMINOUS FLUX

Theluminousflux,i.e.theamountoflightemittedbythelampperunitoftime,isgiveninlumen(lm)andisdeterminedbyusingthenominalvoltageandcurrent,preciselyregulated,afterpreliminaryageing.Thisvalueismainlydeterminedbythewatt-ageofthelampandthedesiredcolourtemperatureorlife.Whileburning,thelamp‘swattageconsumptiondropsbyupto3%,causingonlyaveryslightreductionintheluminousflux.Thehalogencyclepreventsanyfurtherseveredropintheluminousfluxcausedbyevaporatedtungsten.Theluminousflux(lm),inrelationtothewattage(W)consumptionofthelampgivestheluminousefficacy(lm/W),fromwhichtheexpectedcolourtem-peratureandlifecanbecalculated.

VOLTAGE DROP

Withlow-voltagetungsten-halogenlampsandbecauseofthehighlampcurrentsthatprevail,thevoltagedropintheleadwirebetweentransformerandlampmustespeciallybetakenintoaccount.Thevoltagedropincreasesindirectproportiontothelengthoftheleadandthecurrent.Toavoidoverheatingofthelead,insufficientlampwattageandultimatelyadropintheluminousflux,thecross-sectionoftheleadwiremustalwaysbecorrectlyadaptedtoitslengthandtothecurrentconsumption.

TRANSFORMERS

Low-voltagetungsten-halogenlampsmustbeoperatedwithatransformertoconvertthemainsvoltageintothevoltageactuallyrequired.

Wheninstalling,pleasenotethefollowingpoints:

•Installthetransformerascloselyaspossibletothelightsource(voltagedrop!),butpayattentiontotheoperatingtempera-tures.

•OnlyusesafetytransformersaccordingtoVDE0551withthermalfuse.

•Transformersshouldbeoperatedatnominalloadtoavoidovervoltageatthelampasthismayshortenthelife.

•Ensureeasyaccess,sothatanyintegratedfusecanbeexchangedeasilyifnecessary.
