Dear Grandma Ruth,
I hope all is well back home. I am still living in the big city with tall buildings and cars racing around. In your last letter, you asked about the Athletic Club of Columbus, where I am a member. It is a little bigger than the AAA club back home and has more to do than the county YMCA. We have a chef (fancy word for cook) and he and his team do amazing things. They don’t make soup beans and corn bread like you, but their fish dishes are better than Uncle Jed’s and soups scream like a trapped frog. We just opened up a new Café and they are making these juices and salads that you and Aunt Rose couldn’t imagine. They call it healthy living. I go there and work on my computer, drink coffee and meet with friends.
I see a lot of business professionals at my club, and I also see youngsters, grandparents, moms and dads, athletes, dressed up people and some folks wear jeans every day. You’ve never seen anything like it. The most special thing is the people. The employees are like the people back home, nice as all get out. The other members are really friendly and there’s nary a stuck up fellow like that Mr. Crowley you don’t care for.
We do have a few carpers; they just need to get involved in one of the 100 things that are available and they’ll see how special this place really is. We even had 20 people start a Christmas Party about 10 years ago, and this year had 750 members drinking martinis (fancy word for good shine).
That’s all I have for now. I miss you and will write soon.
~Selly

Paul Kroll, Jr., CCM General Manager
After a two-year timeline that has included facilities master planning, concept meetings, design drawings, financial planning, communications, construction, and incremental operating, the Club is coming upon the final weeks of the first floor renovation project. To date, the member response to the improvements to the Café, Carmichael’s Bar and Lounge, and the Lobby have been enthusiastically positive. The performance of the new spaces has also been positive as early signs indicate that the Club is realizing the hoped-for benefits. Once construction is fully complete, the occasion will certainly call for a celebration! Please be on the lookout for an upcoming announcement from the Club for a ribbon cutting ceremony in April.
While we’re closing in on project completion, there are features yet to come that are sure to add intrigue and further ways to use your Club. Here are a few to keep in mind.
The Lobby will see new mahogany front doors that, similar to the exposed brick and replicated ceiling murals in the new Carmichael’s, are a nod to the Club’s original design. The completion of the casual dining room will offer more traditional dining seating that will be nicely appointed for casual family meals. The formal dining room will be a very intimate space in what was formerly the back half of Carmichael’s. Chef John Wolfe is working on a menu to blend the best of Carmichael’s offerings with special dishes that can be enjoyed in an adult-only, jacket-required environment.
We are also making progress on patio seating. Yes, outdoor space is coming soon! The space identified for this patio area is the stretch between the side entrance (formerly the Library Bar door) and main doorway. Access will be from inside the Café. The initial plan will be to offer café food options on the patio, with an option to consume alcoholic beverages.
Lastly, you may be wondering about art work in these new spaces. We have a small amount of art that will be arriving soon and installed in the Café. Outside of the Café installation, the Board of Directors has elected to pause on further art selections while a comprehensive plan can be determined. The Board sees the Club’s investment in the process of choosing art as another way for members to take pride in their Club’s culture. There are important decisions to make on this front, and we will likely have an update on our progress come Summer 2018.
In the meantime, enjoy your Club! And, as always, we welcome your feedback as you experience your Club in new ways this spring.
