Green Tips• Please use your discretion on the amount of water used while showering.• We suggest that you have towels and linens changed only when needed to preserve water
and energy.• Reuse plastic bags for shopping, or buy reusable bags. Millions of plastic bags end up in
our landfills every year.• Lastly, recycle, recycle, and recycle! Before disposing of any plastics, metals or paper, ask
staff to place them in the appropriate bins for recycling if available at your property.
Fire Safety• In the event of a fire, remain calm and evacuate the property immediately. • If there is smoke in your villa, DO NOT STAND because smoke and gas rise. • Stay as low as possible to the floor, and keep a wet cloth over your nose and mouth to
avoid smoke inhalation.• Call the Fire Department immediately (‘411’) giving the exact location of the fire. • Sound an alarm for everyone in the villa. • Do not place yourself at risk. Ensure your personal safety first!
First Aid• A basic First Aid Kit is provided; please ask your housekeeper or Property Manager to

discretion of the guests and is always greatly appreciated. • Recommended service charge is about 5% of the entire rental charge. • This can be spilt between the staff as you see fit.

Barbados GeographyBarbados is a limestone island 21 miles long and 14 miles wide, 166sq miles. We are theeasternmost island in the Caribbean chain, located north east of Venezuela and west of Africaat co-ordinates 13 10 N, 59 32 W. Barbados is considered part of the Lesser Antilles. Thehighest point on our island is Mount Hillaby on the east coast, which is 1,089 feet.
Barbados ParishesSomewhat like Boroughs in England, Barbados is divided into 11 Parishes:To the North is St. Lucy, on the West is St. Peter, St. James, in the middle and land locked isSt. George and St. Thomas, on the East facing the Atlantic Ocean are St. Andrew, St. Joseph,St. John and St. Philip and on the South are St. Michael and Christ Church.

Beaches & SwimmingBarbados is surrounded by sea in just about every shade of blue, a delight to behold evenwhen simply driving around the island. With over 70 miles of palm-fringed, white sandbeaches owing to the coral geology of the island it is a sun-worshippers paradise. There areno private beaches in Barbados – they are open to all. Enjoy, but do remember that toplessor nude sunbathing is prohibited.
The East Coast Beaches of Barbados on the Atlantic Ocean offer not only the biggest waves, but also the most dangerous currents so swimming here is not recommended. Instead, enjoya drive along the stunningly beautiful East Coast road or a long walk along Cattlewash beach. But remember even though the sea can sometimes appear quite inviting there are nolifeguards on duty and rip currents are a daily occurrence.
For surfing enthusiasts however, Bathsheba, known worldwide for its fabulous surfing is theplace to go. Home of the famous "Soup Bowl" and with prime conditions year-round it's a hotspot for local and visiting surfers alike.
The South Coast Beaches of Barbados are characterized by small to medium waves, gooddive sites and excellent wind and kite surfing conditions. There are many stretches of whitesand bays and the sea is mostly calm and perfect for swimming while numerous shallow-water reefs make it ideal for snorkeling.
One of the best windsurfing spots is Silver Sands where several international windsurfingevents are held every year.
The beach bordering Carlisle Bay, which stretches from Bridgetown to the Hilton Hotel, is amagnificent stretch with lots of opportunities for beach walks and generally safe swimming. However, unexpected currents can occur, so always stay within your depth.
Northern Barbados may have less sand but makes up for it with spectacular weathered cliffsand pounding Atlantic swells in numerous little bays. The majority of the coast tends to be abit rockier than some of the other coasts, but there are some spectacular views of the oceanfrom the cliffs and ridges.
Swimming is quite safe within sheltered River Bay, but due to very strong on-shore currents itis extremely inadvisable to swim at Maycocks Bay, Cove Bay and Morgan Lewis Beaches, although they are fantastic photo spots.
The West Coast Beaches of Barbados are known for calm, clear water, excellent for swimmingand snorkeling. The gentle Caribbean Sea in all its turquoise glory laps soft white sandybeaches. The tranquil, translucent water is perfect for water sports: from snorkeling onshallow reefs or cruising on a catamaran to jet skiing and scuba diving.
About Barbados
Contact Blue Sky Luxury Concierge at: Tel: 622-4466 or Email: [email protected]
Flags on BeachKeep an eye out for flags on the beach indicating dangerous currents.• YELLOW FLAG: proceed with caution• RED FLAG: stay out of the sea
Lion FishThough somewhat rare these fish have been steadily increasing in numbers here inBarbados. Brightly colored, Lion Fish are usually found on coral reefs, especially in shallowwaters. They have venomous fin spines that can produce painful puncture wounds.
A person punctured by one of the spines will immediately feel strong pain. If stung, get out ofthe water, clean the wound and fight the pain with heat. The venom is protein base and willfade away when heated. You can use a hairdryer, warm water or compress massage with anyhot object. Make sure the heat is as high as you can stand. Local anesthetic agents mayprovide deep relief in most cases and occasionally a nerve block may be required. An X-ray ofthe wound should be performed to detect any presence of broken spines, so that anypossible infection can be prevented. Normally, there is pain and discomfort for about 24hours.
Manchineel treesBeware of these poisonous trees (usually marked with a red ring around the trunk) andyellow-green “apples” found along many of the west coast beaches. Contact with the leaves, branches or fruit of the Manchineel tree will cause severe blistering. Take care not to shelterunder these trees when it’s raining as the water dripping from the leaves will produce thesame unpleasant effect. Do not touch the fruit and warn kids not to play with them.
Mosquitoes and Sand fliesTraditionally these insects “make themselves known” at sunset and throughout the evening.Everyone reacts differently to these insect bites; some are not bothered while others withmore sensitive skin may become very uncomfortable. Ask your pharmacist for suggestions tokeep them from stinging and promote quick healing.
Sea Urchins/CobblersBarbados is surrounded by a series of coral reefs. As a result, sea urchins (commonly referredto as cobblers) can be found on rocks close to shore. They resemble a tennis ball with longblack spines or short white spines. Avoid them and wear protective reef shoes whensnorkeling. However, should you happen to step on one while exploring DO NOT try toremove the spines from beneath the skin as this will possibly lead to infection. They willdissolve and disappear but it is wise to soak the area with antiseptic. If spines are protrudingfrom the skin, you may try to remove them carefully.

Sea SafetyIt is advisable to stay within your depth when swimming anywhere. When snorkeling, remember to take a brightly colored buoy or float – there is a lot of water traffic along thewest coast.
SunWe suggest that for the first few days of your visit you spend only short periods in the directsun and apply a sunscreen every 30 minutes. Avoid sun bathing at the hottest time of the daybetween 1200hrs and 1400hrs and do not remain in the sun for more than 30 minutes untilyou see how sensitive your skin is. Additionally, we recommend you wear a hat to protect youfrom the direct rays of the sun.
Bus SystemIn Barbados, you can rent a vehicle, take a taxi or travel by bus. Should you wish to take a taxior rent a car please see the section on car rental and taxis for specific recommendations. Thecost will vary depending on your destination, or how long you would like to keep your rentalcar.
If you wish to travel by bus there are three different types of buses to choose from: Theprivately owned, white and maroon vans (otherwise known as ZR’s due to their licenseplates); privately owned yellow and blue mini-buses (B license plate) and Government ownedblue and yellow buses (BM license plate).
All bus fares are Bds$2.00 per person at the time of printing – you require exact change.
We do suggest that you travel on the government buses but should you be looking for a veryunique ride, try a ZR! But be prepared for crowded seats and loud music at peak hours.
Main bus terminals for the Transport Board buses are in Bridgetown and Speightstown. Themain terminals for the privately owned mini-buses and route taxis are located at the northernand southern ends of Bridgetown.
Depending on the routes, during the week buses can operate from as early as 5.30am to aslate as 12.30pm. For more information on the Government Transport Service, including theirSunday Scenic Tour contact at Tel: 310 3500 or 310 3672/73 Website:www.transportboard.com

Time ZoneBarbados is 4 hrs behind GMT and so during the winter it is four hours behind the UK (fivebehind the rest of Europe) and an hour ahead of the Eastern US. Barbados has no daylightsaving time in the summer so the island is then five hours behind the UK (six hours behindthe rest of Europe) and on the same time as EST in the US.
TransportationContact Blue Sky Luxury Concierge for preferred taxi services and car hire details, or see ourCars & Taxis section.
Driving TipsPlease remember in Barbados we drive on the left side of the road, just as they do inEngland, which may take some getting used to for North American drivers. Also take extracare crossing the street – out of habit you may find yourself looking where cars are goinginstead of coming.Road conditions are reasonable throughout the island, but watch out for “potholes” outsidethe larger towns and cities.
Use caution when driving at night because of narrow roads with no shoulders and frequentpedestrian and bicycle traffic.
TurtlesBarbados beaches are the most important and instinctive nesting beaches in the EasternCaribbean for the endangered Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys Imbricata) as well as manyother species of sea turtles. BARBADOS RUMThe spirit of Barbados is, of course, rum. The island prides itself on being the birthplace of
rum believed to be the oldest distilled spirit in the world. It is certainly the oldest in
Barbados.
First made in the 17th Century by plantation workers who started experimenting with
fermenting molasses into alcohol, the original product was so raw and strong that it was
referred to as “Kill-Divil”.
Over time, as distillation practices improved Barbados rum became renowned in Europe and
Colonial America until today it is recognized and appreciated by rum connoisseurs the world
over.
Among the oldest producers of rum is Mount Gay Distilleries which began distillation of its
famous brand in 1703. Other brands of excellent quality have followed and a visit to one of
the island’s rum distilleries is a fascinating one. Please ask Concierge for recommendations
and details of opening times and available tours. Tel: 622-4466

Dining
Dining out in Barbados is a rewarding adventure. From roadside vendors, fast food outlets,
cafes and sports bars to family-run and top-of-the-line gourmet restaurants, the Barbados
dining experience offers something for every taste.
Traditional Bajan food may be found on most menus, even the more sophisticated ones
where it’s often presented with an interesting international twist! It’s well worth exploring.
Fresh fish is abundant with the iconic Flying Fish leading the way closely followed by Mahi
Mahi. Local pork is delicious especially when baked and served with rice ‘n peas, macaroni
pie, candied sweet potatoes and lots of gravy! Other wonderful root vegetables (ground
provisions) include yams, cassava and eddoes. Roasted breadfruit and corn meal coo coo are
also ingredients for a solid Bajan meal.
On the sweet side there are tropical fruits – mangoes, bananas, oranges, melons, golden
apples, pineapples and paw paw (papaya) – while popular sweetmeats include coconut
sugar cakes, tart tamarind balls and exotic guava cheese (similar to Turkish Delight).
At Independence time (November 30th) Conkies made with corn meal, coconut and raisins
and steamed in banana leaves, are served. And no Bajan Christmas would be complete
without clove studded ham, jug jug and Great Cake washed down with a glass of ice cold
sorrel.
Eastern culinary influences have also become a part of Bajan cuisine, chief among them
being the Roti – a spicy curry (usually chicken, beef or vegetable) encased in a dhal puri
wrap.

possible to arrange a rental as long as you present a document from a physician stating

years.
• A local driving permit is necessary and is issued by the rental agent’s representative at a
cost of $5 US each and they are valid for 30 days. Longer permits are also available if
your stay with us goes beyond this time.

Taxi ServiceTaxis are a great way to get around Barbados, whether for customised tours or general
transport services. Most local taxi companies offer a choice of luxury cars, small vans or large
coaches for groups.
Please note that the taxi’s in Barbados are not metered as they are in other parts of the world
so it is best to clarify with the driver what the full cost is before you start out – that way there
will be no surprises once you reach your destination.
Airport transfers are always higher as the transportation of luggage will require a larger
vehicle. Prices will vary according to the number of passengers and the type of vehicle the
driver supplies.
Please feel free to contact any of the taxi companies listed in this section – they are Blue Sky
Luxury approved! – or have Concierge make arrangements for you.

No holiday is complete without a little ‘retail therapy’ and in Barbados it is particularly
attractive because visitors can shop ‘duty-free’ for luxury items. The savings on exquisite
jewelry, alluring perfumes, top of the line cosmetics, designer clothes and shoes, as well as
liquor and tobacco, are considerable.
You will find Duty-Free shops in the main shopping areas of Bridgetown, Holetown and
Speightstown as well as in several malls on the south and west coasts.
All duty-free items (with the exception of liquor and tobacco) may be taken away at the time
of purchase. But, remember, you will need to present your immigration slip or passport and
airline ticket when duty-free shopping.
Store opening hours are generally between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Monday to Friday and
9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays. But these do tend to vary a bit according to location so
it’s wise to check with Blue Sky Luxury Concierge for specific times.
In addition to luxury shopping there are many shops and boutiques offering arts, crafts and
souvenirs as well as markets with fresh produce and well-stocked supermarkets and delis.
Below is a selection of recommended ‘shopping experiences’.
Bridgetown ShoppingDiamonds International, one of the world’s largest duty-free jewelers, offers a diverse brand

shops can also be found at the Grantley Adams International Airport and the Bridgetown
Cruise Terminal. For a truly personalized shopping experience you can book an appointment

marble memorial tablets by well-known English sculptors Richard Westmacott and Joseph
Nollekens.
St. James Parish Church was originally a wooden structure erected by English settlers in
1628. In the early 1690’s the stone structure was built with the church bell cast in 1669.

Fun Facts about BarbadosThe following fun facts about Barbados truly depict the quaint yet charming nature of the
island. We hope that you enjoy reading them and that they help you to understand a few
peculiarities of our island.
The National dish of Barbados is Cou-Cou and Flying Fish.
Cou-Cou is a dish made with cornmeal and okras, in much the same way that it has been
made in Africa for centuries. It is accompanied by flying fish, which have been prepared in an
aromatic sauce of tomato, onion, chives, thyme, fresh pepper, garlic and other herbs.
It is good luck to have a mongoose scurry across the road in front of you.
The Mongoose is a slender, furry creature of about 24 inches from its head to the end of its
bushy, squirrel-like tail. It has a brown coat and looks a bit like a weasel. Mongoose were
brought to Barbados from India in 1879 to combat the problem of the increasing rat
population – and the ensuing threat to the sugar industry.
Chattel houses are wooden dwellings peculiar to the island of Barbados.
A chattel is a man’s moveable possession; hence these are ‘moveable houses’. Barbadian
chattel houses were traditionally built on top of blocks, so that if the owner had to move to
another area, then he would literally move his house with him.
Flying fish jump out of the water and can glide for 30 – 50 metres.
Barbados is hailed as “The land of the flying fish”. This interesting fish abounds in our waters
and has become something of a national emblem as well as a staple part of our diet. Other
popular local fish are dolphin, kingfish, sailfish, barracuda, tuna, red snapper and chub.
Incidentally, whenever you see “dolphin” on a menu, please do not think that you are about
to eat “flipper” and his friends. Dolphin is also known around the world as Mahi Mahi.
November 2014 marks the 48th year of Barbadian independence from Britain.
Barbados became independent from Great Britain on the 30th November 1966. Today we
remain a commonwealth with Queen Elizabeth II as our titular head of state. On the actual
Independence Day a parade is held at the Garrison Savannah site of the original

independence ceremony while in Bridgetown the Parliament Buildings, Independence
Square and the Independence Arch are floodlit in the national colours of blue and gold.
There were originally 400 standpipes installed across the island of Barbados.
Until recent times the standpipe was very much a focal point in Barbadian village life. In
every populated area the government installed a standpipe where people could go to collect
free water for their household needs. Thus the standpipe became a busy centre of activity
and the venue for a great deal of social interaction – from gossip, to courtship, to political
discussion!
Barbados was originally named Los Barbados, meaning ‘the bearded ones’.
To Pedro Campos, the Portuguese explorer who sighted the island in 1536, the aerial roots of
the Bearded Fig Tree (a type of Ficus) resembled long beards, hence the name ‘Los Barbados’
from the Portugese for ‘bearded ones”.
The Barbados National flower is the Pride of Barbados.
The official name is Caesalpinia pulcherrima. These flowers are generally red, yellow or
orange and can be found year round across the island. You will find that they add a wonderful
splash of colour wherever they grow.
Mount Gay Barbados Rum is over 300 years old!
Mount Gay Rum was first produced in 1703. This makes it one of the oldest rum brands in the
world. Today, Mount Gay Barbados Rum is sold in over 66 countries, the US being the number
one market and some consider it to be the most famous brand of fine rum in the world!

chicken along with macaroni pie, vegetable rice, steamed vegetables, tossed salad, coleslaw,
corn and garlic bread. Unlimited drinks are also included and you should try the world
famous Jolly Roger rum punch to put you in the spirit for the pirate wedding and congaline.
There are 2 swimming stops to feed the turtles and fish and view the sunken ships.
SpearfishingSpearfishing is a fantastic sport that combines the thrill of catching fish and the extreme
tranquillity of freediving. It is unique in that spearfishing is one of the oldest methods of
catching fish and is extremely ecological, providing virtually zero by-catch thus reducing the
damage to fish populations.
Whether you spearfish in your home town or love the idea of freediving in Barbados'
beautiful waters hunting fish, look no further! Spearfishing Barbados provides tours catered
for all ages and abilities throughout the year, all around the island. All equipment is provided
including water and refreshments as well as training and tips/techniques for the most
effective hunt. Call us today or visit our website to find out more!
Scuba DivingBarbados offers a wide range of diving to suit both novice and experienced divers. There are
currently over 20 dive sites to choose from with the majority strung along the West Coast,
Maycocks Bay and Dottins being amongst the most popular. The upper South Coast is better

known for its drift diving, being closer to the Atlantic side of the island. The East Coast has
very strong currents and diving is therefore limited.
The barrier reefs of Barbados are roughly half a mile to 2 miles from shore and slope up to
within 60ft of the surface. Closer to shore, there are fringe and patching reefs that range from
40-60ft in depth and almost run a ring around the island. Visibility is good (70-90ft) pretty
much year round and there is an abundance of corals, sponges, and sea life – hawksbill
turtles, seahorses, frog fish, barracuda among others, though there are few of larger pelagic
creatures.
There are many wrecks and in Carlisle Bay, which is littered with old anchors and cannons,
there are at least 8 wrecks of note, some over 100 yrs old. Wrecks include the Berwyn sunk
1919, Eilon, C-Trek, Fox and former party boat the Bajan Queen which was sunk in 2002.
Just off Needham’s Point, the Old Fort drift dive has a reef strewn with antique bottles and
cannon balls. Carlisle Bay also has an area called Bottle Ground where 18th & 19th century
bottles are found.
Probably one of the most interesting of all dives (for advanced divers only) is the SS
Stravronikita, a 365 Greek freighter which was purposely sunk in 1978 (off Fitts Village), and
sits upright at a maximum depth of 130ft.
Game FishingThe waters around Barbados provide some interesting big game fishing with catches
including blue marlin, white marlin, Dorado (also known as mahi-mahi/dolphin), Wahoo,
kingfish, sailfish, swordfish, black fin tuna, bonito, barracuda and yellow fin tuna.
The offshore season is from November to May. Fishing Tournaments are organized by the
Barbados Game Fishing Association, with the highlight of the season being the annual
Sagicor/Mount Gay Rum International Tournament held in April. Tel: 428-6668.Website:

your days in Barbados being lazy on the beach, what better way for you to have some added
fun than taking a surf lesson! Surfing in Barbados is fun for everyone regardless of their
experience with beginner size waves to heavy, overhead coral reef breaks.
From September until February the surf averages 2 to 3 meters reaching as high as 6 meters
due to the consistent winter swells. During the summer months the surf is smaller and less
predictable ranging anywhere from a ½ to 2 meters. Surf during this time of year is usually
determined by how active the hurricane season is. As tropical storms pass well north of the
island on their way to the United States, Barbados can receive some of the largest ground
swells at this time of the year while maintaining its beautiful climate.
The average water temperature in Barbados is 26 degrees Celsius. The lowest temperature
you should expect to experience is about 25 degrees in winter. So no wetsuits are needed
just board shorts and a bar of tropical wax for Barbados surfing!
Surfing lessons are readily available at various locations. If you are interested in rentals or in
lessons, please contact Blue Sky Luxury Concierge. Tel: 622-4466.

Stand-up PaddlingSweeping the world with its popularity, Stand-up Paddling is a watersport that can be

beach they can even come to you. For the ultimate work-out try doing your fitness exercises or

coast. Founded in 1957, with the aim of making sailing available to all, the BCC hosts the
Annual Round Barbados Race held annually on January 21st. This event is a tribute to one of
the club’s founding members The Right Excellent Errol Barrow (the first Prime Minister of
Barbados) known to many as “The Dipper”. The clubhouse is home to Dippers Beach Bar,
offering drinks and refreshments. The club’s beachfront location makes it the perfect spot to
swim, soak up some rays or go for a paddle. In the evenings the clubhouse’s elevated deck is
ideal for relaxing and watching the sunset.
The Barbados Yacht Club is located on Carlisle Bay, about one mile south of Bridgetown
within the historic Garrison area. Visiting yachtsmen are welcomed and are given seven days
complimentary membership on establishing their bona fides. The club also has reciprocal
agreements with select yacht clubs. Check online for a list of these clubs. Tel: 427-1125

St Vincent and the Grenadines is an uncluttered island chain buried deep within the
Caribbean Sea. Thirty-two islands dot the seascape. St Vincent is the
largest in the group, home to the capital, Kingstown. This lively town is a throwback to
colonial times with cobblestone streets and colourful markets. Once you get off the big
island and into the Grenadines, everything changes. In Bequia, beaches stretch out before
you, the pace of life slows to a crawl and the desire to go home vanishes. Or you can spend
time on the island of Mustique where renting a house for the week will cost more than buying
a luxury car! These islands have enchanted sailors for centuries, and continue to do so
Canouan. A short flight from Barbados is the tiny Grenadine island of Canouan sheltered by
one of the world’s largest coral reefs and home of the Caribbean newest luxury resort, Pink
Sands Club. A full day allows you to enjoy a round of golf on the 18-hole, par-72
championship course designed by Jim Fazio or a half day’s boat trip to the nearby Tobago
Cays for swimming and snorkeling.
The Grenadines are perfect for one-day sailing excursions. A brief 50 minute flight takes you
to Union Island where an authentic schooner and the stunning Grenadine islands await. A
light breakfast snack is served on board before setting sail to Mayreau. Swim, snorkel or
explore the island! Later in the morning it’s over to the break-taking Tobago Cays – a marine
reserve made up of five uninhabited islands, excellent for swimming, snorkeling with the
turtles or simply relaxing at the water’s edge. Back on board, there’s an open bar and a
delicious Caribbean influenced buffet lunch. In the evening there’s a gentle sail to ‘discover’
Palm Island before returning to Union Island for your return flight.
St. Lucia. From hidden coves, to tropical forests and waterfalls, the natural beauty of St. Lucia
guarantees a great experience. A day-tour includes a brief flight from Barbados after which
you can enjoy a drive around the island with visits to mineral Springs and the world’s only
drive-in volcano or board a luxury speed boat for a trip along the coast to the magnificent

the island is the proud home of one of the oldest and most beautiful Synagogues in the
Western hemisphere!
Here is some information on what you will need if you’re planning to get married in Barbados:
An application for a marriage license must be made by both parties at the Ministry of Home
Affairs Office between Monday and Friday – 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Please note that same sex
marriages are not permitted in Barbados. Following are the documents necessary to procure
your Marriage License:
Valid Passports
• Original or certified copies of your Birth Certificates
• If either party was divorced, an original Decree Absolute or a certified copy of the Final
Judgment must be presented.
• If either party was previously married and widowed, a certified copy of the Marriage and
Death Certificate in respect of the deceased spouse is required.
• If either party has had a change of name, supporting documentation as applicable by
Deed Pole or Adoption papers must be supplied.
• If the bride or groom is under the age of 21 years, both parents must be present as they
procure their legally required Marriage License, or evidence of parental consent is
required in the form of an affidavit stamped by a notary public or a solicitor.
If there is any doubt as to either person’s status in respect to the above, it may be necessary
for an affidavit to be sworn in the presence of a local solicitor.
Where necessary, all documents not in English must be accompanied by a certified
translation. Couples will then be required to verbally verify that the information and
documentation supplied is true and correct, and that each of them is legally free to marry the
other.

Two (2) witnesses, both over the age of 18 years, are legally required to sign the Marriage
Certificate. A Certificate is usually presented to the Couple following the Ceremony. One copy
is retained in the Officer’s Marriage Register and one is submitted to the Registry of the
Barbados Supreme Court so that the Marriage is legally recorded in Barbados. Civil
Ceremonies are arranged on request for a supplement, and are more time consuming, as
additional procedures are required, including visiting the Magistrate's Court Office.
