a woRtHy causeThe Steps-N-Stages Jubilee House was established by 15-year Navy veteran,

Barbara Marshall, using her own money. The Jubilee House offers shelter,

support, and services such as mentoring and life coaching for homeless women

veterans. Along with housing 3 women veterans and their children, the Jubilee

House works with over 30 homeless women veterans seeking assistance each

week. Unfortunately, Barbara could only do so much – The Jubilee House

needed additional space and resources to continue the work Barbara was

doing with the veteran women in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Blue Ridge

answered the call.

see tHe BuIld, day By dayIn the summer of 2011, Blue Ridge Log Cabins and the award-winning ABC

television show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition united to serve America’s

heroes. Working day in and day out, Blue Ridge Log Cabins brought together

the North and South Carolina communities helping Barbara Marshall provide

shelter, services, and support to her fellow female veterans in Fayetteville,

North Carolina. Through the donors, builders, and volunteers of

“Heroes, Hearts, and Hardhats,” this extreme team gave these fearless

women a new start in life.

tHe Road to FayettevIlleextreme at first siteBlue Ridge travels to Fayetteville to meet with the staff of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and city officials to start discussing plans for this awe-inspiring project. Back at the 110,000-square-feet manufacturing facility, Blue Ridge expert craftsmen stand ready to make Barbara Marshall’s dreams come true and provide a place of comfort and transition to so many of America’s homeless female veterans – one log at a time.

next stop: campobelloExtreme Makeover: Home Edition’s design team heads to Blue Ridge to see how hundreds of log homes have come together – seamlessly and precisely – in our state-of-the-art, climate-controlled facility. The show’s designers and Blue Ridge’s own in-house designers and engineers lay the plans for one of the show’s largest projects ever completed.

announcing Blue RidgeOn June 22, 2011, two press conferences were held to announce the exciting news. The first was held at Blue Ridge’s facility in Campobello, SC. Later that day, in the historic Market House in downtown Fayetteville, Blue Ridge’s Chip Smith and Fayetteville Mayor Tony Chavonne shared their excitement for the opportunity to work together to assist an amazing veteran who continues to serve America.

“move this House” press conference Just days before the on-site build begins, South Carolina Governor, Nikki Haley, along with local and state officials join Chip Smith at the Blue Ridge Log Cabins facility to send off the final construction sections to the “Top Secret” location in Fayetteville. An official government addendum is presented, commending Chip and the entire Blue Ridge family for their amazing contribution.

good moRnIng maRsHall FamIly! The day starts with the famous “Door Knock,” as seen on TV. The Blue Ridge crew, volunteers, military personnel, and designers Ty Pennington, Tracy Hutson, Paulie DiMeo, Sabrina Soto, and Johnny Littlefield all watch as paratroopers from the Army, Navy, and Air Force fly in to hand Ty his iconic megaphone. Children on the street cheer and wave American flags as this colorful crew passes by on its way to surprise Barbara Marshall and the members of Barbara’s Jubilee House. Everyone waits until Ty yells out his classic phrase, “GOOD MORNING Marshall Family!!!”

Barbara, her son, and the female veterans currently benefiting from Barbara’s love and support at the Jubilee House rush out as they realize their extreme dream is about to come true.

A black stretch hummer soon pulls up to whisk Barbara and her family off to a Disney World vacation. Then no time is wasted, as the Heroes, Hearts, and Hardhats of Fayetteville and Blue Ridge begin to remove furniture from the home, cut down trees, and prepare for demo.

gIRl poweR!tearing down the house The second day starts when more than 150 female veterans of all ages all ban together to start demolition. They grasp an enormous red and yellow woven rope that is tied to the house, then – using their combined strength – pull on the rope to tear the house down. They are joined by United States Senator for North Carolina Kay Hagan, who makes a special visit to help.

With the house gone, a hole is dug and preparations for the foundation are completed. Representatives from NASCAR arrive with the hood of a genuine Army race car that’s been signed by all the stars. The hood will be auctioned off during the “Heroes, Hearts, and High Heels” fundraiser just days away. By days end, the Superior Wall foundation is put in place.

Reveal day, “move tHat Bus!” Finally, the big day arrives. The crowd of spectators reaches down the block and is seven rows deep. The bus blocks the view of the finished home as the limo pulls up, and an elated Barbara Marshall and her “family” get out. They are met by Ty, Chip, and the crew, and – in a surprise perfect for these American heroes – they are then greeted by First Lady Michelle Obama, who welcomes them warmly and thanks Barbara for her dedication and service to our nation’s female veterans.

The crowd continues its excitement, as everyone soon starts chanting “Move that Bus! Move that Bus!” The bus pulls away and the cameras break to Barbara’s expression of awe and happiness as she sees her new Blue Ridge Log Cabin home and all it will provide for homeless women veterans throughout Fayetteville and North Carolina.

Have a look InsIdethe west wingBefitting a true White House, the new Jubilee House has its own West Wing, with a grand dining hall where the Jubilee women can gather for meals and events. The rustic open atrium is done in modern earth tones with wood-planked walls, exposed painted beams, and double-stacked windows. There is an overhead catwalk, a tall glass fireplace, and a grand dining table with high-back chairs.

The West Wing is home to the kitchen, where all the Jubilee women can come together to cook for the residents and other female vets in the community. The kitchen features a rolling library ladder, a dual sink, a custom butcher-block island, custom stone backsplash, an exposed pantry, and a hanging metal pot rack, plus modern amenities like a pot faucet at the range. The exquisite and rustic Blue Ridge design is continued with the exposed ceiling beams and white and natural woods. A highlight of the room is the Jubilee Menu on the wall, which outlines each day’s meals, information sessions, projects, and resource offerings.

The garden features a sitting area, green house, fountain, and of course a Rose Garden. There are fruit and vegetable beds, and a specially created vegetable vacuum tube to easily transfer these garden delights to the kitchen table. The fresh, bright, and airy area is a place the women can work together, share resources, and grow, as they plant seeds for the future.

There are also wall-to-wall shelves with a rolling library ladder, a four-poster bed, and a restored antique desk signed by First Lady Michelle Obama herself.
