The rain in Spain falls mainly inthe plain. And momma has an ankle sprain.

“You have a boo-boo on your ankle because you fell over a wok,” Peyton told me as she saw me wrap my killer cankle for the umpteenth time. “You have to be careful.”

Yes, it finally happened. I got a “boo-boo” that has sidelined me a bit.

It happened up along the Blue Ridge Parkway somewhere with a Marine friend of mine. We’ll call him Jack. Around mile 6 on the most gor-geous spring day yet, a big bad rock or root jumped out at me. I heard a very loud pop that probably echoed through the mountains. I won’t tell you my exact reaction but I will say it began with a verb and ended with a “me!”

Verb me! Verb me!“Are you alright? What hap-

pened?!” Jack said, as he started doing his Vietnam-era Marine medic ninja hand moves on my throbbing foot.

I think in between the groans, I told him I just needed to let the pain pass for a minute.

Then, in classic Marine-comes-to-rescue-me voice, Jack said, “I can carry you back to the car.”

Ladies, chivalry is not dead.Though I appreciated the offer, I

finished the remaining 3 miles down WhiteFallsTorryOverlookRidg-eSlackSomethingGapTrailPass with-out much pain, as long as I avoided any lateral moves. I was so excited to see our car, I tripped and fell face forward just yards from it.

Back in the valley, I watched Jack drink a craft beer as I ate the best turkey club sandwich ever. And I would have had another one of those today if I had been able to compete in the 25k I had been training for. Time will tell.

I shan’t train in rain, for fear of a sprain. Insane!

Friend BASIC NECESSITIES

Eternal springs of hope!Let us delight your sensesand fulfill your dreams.

HopeHope is the thing with feathers/

That perches in the soul/And sings the tune without the words/ And never stops at all.

— Emily Dickinson

There’s a new chorus outside my open window, beyond the first delicate and achingly beautiful birdcalls we awaken to at dawn. This voice is the chorus of our hearts as spring settles solidifying hope. The hope that our seeds will grow, be they beets, vines, children, ideas or dreams.

Some people husband hope, saving it for the rainy day that never comes, while others employ it like fantasy without the work to back it up. Such is hope’s power to intoxicate, and all the more in spring.

Hope must have been in the hearts of the Hochar family, particularly Serge Hochar, to persevere produc-ing Château Musar, just outside of Beirut, through years of civil war. The same hope and expectation all farmers cultivate when they plant that first tiny seed and trust it will grow. As the years pass, I find I admire this wine

more than ever, and I think perhaps it has to do with what the wine, the land and the family endured, coupled with tremendous passion. I know no other wine that is less manipulated than Musar. Not only is it all organic, but Serge adds nothing even in dif-ficult years. “When you are a wine-maker, you have the luck to work with something that is alive and you should never kill it,” he says. Because of Serge’s noninterventionist approach, Musar is a wine that changes dramati-cally from one vintage to the next, and in an age when the winemaker is often seen as the genie who produces great wine, Musar is, instead, completely a product of the vineyard, shaped most by the varying amounts of rain and wind and sun each year.

Jeune Musar Blanc 2012– This brilliant, delicious white is a florally blend of Viognier and Vermentino, giving it crisp acidity and fruit, and Chardonnay, adding depth. Pair with olives or mezze and you can almost feel the Mediterranean. $23

Château Musar, 2005- Musar often takes years of aging in the bottle to become great. But the 2005 has a

secret, and it’s great right now. Pop the cork and let the subtle aromas of lavender, leather, ripe plums and figs greet your nose while the real magic will happen an hour or so into your meal as the wine opens and evolves. As you drink it taste, in Serge’s words, this relationship between man and wine, “of life meeting life. This is the only thing that matters.” And this already great wine has as much aging ability as its siblings in other vintages, and with time in the cellar will only become greater! $54 Hochar, 2009 – With just as much finesse, elegance and deliciousness as the flagship Mu-sar, for half the price. Notes of stewed cherries, coffee and mocha. $29

Maybe the downside to hope is that it implies a sense of living in the future—especially a better future—when life is found in the moment we are. So as this day comes to its end and the peepers begin their song, I may briefly close my eyes and imag-ine that great orange ball sinking into the sea of the Levant, leaving Beirut to the light of her cafés and clubs. I hope you can raise a glass (of Musar) and toast the moment you’re in.

STUARTS DRAFT [ augusta county ]

STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMSPHOTOGRAPHY by DANIEL GAYLE

Daniel Gayle of Stuarts Draft decided he wanted to travel and see the world.

That’s where he found his love.

10 Blue Ridge LIFE MAY 2014

Daniel, who lives in Stuarts Draft but says his other home is “The World,” started out pretty typically – he graduated high school and went to a community college for two years, hoping to discover his path and figure out what he wanted to do with his life. Unfortunately, Daniel didn’t find his calling at college.

Fortunately for Daniel, though, he did discover his passion: traveling. For several years after high school, his group of friends was planning to go to Costa Rica. After several last minute cancellations, Daniel decided to go to Costa Rica on his own. And fell in love with the world.

“Immediately I started making friends and for about a week we all just hung out and had a great time,” he said. “I had never been in another coun-try before.”

So once he had a dream, he just had to figure out how to make it come true. His warehouse job wasn’t exactly his dream job, but it was definitely a job that helped him live his dream. He was able to

He came back home to Stuarts Draft and worked again until January, and then headed in the op-posite direction: Hawaii, where he spent three months going to all of the major islands, a different adventure on each one.

“On July 7, 2013 I quit my job at the warehouse to travel the world and see what would happen to me,” said Daniel, acknowledging that it was a huge – and emotional – decision to leave his job, even though he does have an income from his tenants and also from his water garden business, Clearview Water Gardens (Clearview-Watergardens.com).

But three days later he flew to Europe. And that’s where it all began.

He thought about flying into Eastern Europe

Daniel Gayle doesn’t exactly follow the path he’s given. He prefers to make one up as he goes along.

save a lot of his earnings - enough to buy a house in 2009 and pay it off completely by 2012 (with the help of tenants).

“I kind of realized I had the chance to be free and live my life and live my dreams,” said Dan-iel. “So in August of 2012 I went to Iceland for a month; I hitchhiked around the island and had 53 cars pick me up.”

because he knew he wanted a car and figured, “Everything’s cheaper in Eastern Europe!” But it turns out that (a) that’s not quite the case, and (b) he learned that England was the only place an American can legally buy and own a car in Europe. So first stop: London.

“I got to immigration and I wasn’t really think-ing clearly so I told her I’d just quit my job and I’ve come here [to England] to buy a car and travel and she just stopped me right there,” said Daniel, who landed with his Canon 5D Mark III and not a whole lot else. “I told her I was here to travel but she didn’t believe me! They put me in a detention room for about six hours - it was so ironic to me that I had just achieved my freedom but I was being held.”

When they finally agreed that Daniel was just in the country to look around (and not to work il-legally), he was let out to see the world.

“From there, I crossed the English Channel, I went up through Belgium, north through Germany, Denmark, across the straight up through Norway and then I drove to the top of Norway, picking up hitchhikers and making friends along the way,” he reminisced, adding that he and a friend he’d met decided to go to Svalbard - the northernmost settle-ment in the world, located inside the Arctic Circle.

In Bangladesh, foreigners are treated like celebrities.

What’s left of a car stuck in a lava field in Big Island, Hawaii.

The young couple share a birthday and blow out some candles just days before saying goodbye.

Page 13: Blue Ridge Life, Issue #110

MAY 2014 Blue Ridge LIFE 13

But after spending a week in a place where it never got dark, he decided to head back down south. He met some friends from home in England and toured the U.K, which he hadn’t had time to do before. Then ferried across the English Channel to Paris, and continued to Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Italy (where he primarily couch surfed - “made a lot of friends that way!”), Albania, Montenegro, Croatia, Slovenia, back to Italy and then north to Germany.

But then it started to get cold.“My main goal was to avoid the cold,” said Daniel. “So it was time

to leave my car behind. But by this time it was covered in bumper stickers.”

The car had become somewhat of a beloved travel companion so he decided to leave it with a German friend and return to it in the future (more on that later).

“On October 17 I flew to Nepal and found a little hostel there called the Sparkling Turtle,” said Daniel. “And one morning I came down to get my breakfast and there’s this really attractive blond-headed girl standing in line so I walk up behind her and started mak-ing small talk. And she ended up inviting me to come with her!”

On their first day-trip together, they were sitting down next to the Garden of Dreams in Kathmandu when they were leafing through each other’s passports and discovered they had the same birthday - March 19.

“We have the same mindset, interests and values. Even the same kind of work and birthday,” said Laura, whose father owns a land-scaping business. “I was interested in Daniel from the first time I talked to him, but the more time I spent with him, the more he got my attention.”

“So I kind of took that as a sign that I should push a little harder for this girl,” he said. “So later that even we were talking and next thing you know we were on a rooftop in Kathmandu.”

From that point, Daniel and his now-girlfriend Laura Klein were inseparable for five months.

After a month in Nepal, Daniel and Laura flew to Bangladesh, a densely populated, ethnically homogeneous country that moves at lighting pace.

“We just really stuck out completely,” said Daniel. “After a few weeks of living the celebrity status lifestyle, it started getting old so we decided to go to India.”

They crossed the country and crossed back again before heading to Sri Lanka for two weeks. Since Laura had started her trip in Asia, she wanted to head away from the continent, after spending a few months visiting countries Daniel hadn’t seen yet.

“I thought about asking Daniel if he would like to come with me this time to New Zealand,” she said. “Luckily he said yes!” So they bought a van and did a five week road trip around both the northern and southern islands.

“It was a really interesting situation for me because I realized I owned three different cars on three different continents,” he said. “That van was our home.”

They built a bed in the back of the van and drove around the coun-try with no specific route – down the west side and back up the east. But that’s where the story ends… for now. Daniel had to get back home to Virginia for the spring – the busy time for his water garden business. But Laura stayed and worked on a horse farm in Auckland.

“I told Laura goodbye on the 23rd of March, which was quite an emotional moment because I had spent every day and almost every hour of the five months with this girl,” said Daniel. “It was a very intense period of time to be with one person and to find someone like that that matched so well to you and to have so little conflict while we were together was really an amazing thing. So when I told her goo bye I was very teary eyed and I could barely talk. So that was really a special thing.”

Daniel will spend a few months here in Stuarts Draft before head-ing off to the Netherlands to spend some time with Laura and her family, where he’s looking forward to living like a native instead of a tourist. From there, he’s not sure where he’ll head, but he hopes it will involve Laura and the world at large.

“I plan on traveling for the rest of my life,” he said. “I realize that there’s going to be another stage of work in my life to really, fully achieve the dream and that makes me happy. To have a dream to strive for is really a great thing.” BRL

Wood-fired Pizza on WheelsFIRST CAME LOVE. THEN CAME MARRIAGE. THEN CAME

continued on page 17

“My wife and I had a wood-fired pizza truck out of Floyd, Virginia come and cater our wedding in 2011, and everyone really loved it,” explains Chris Bullard, proprietor of Blue Ridge Pizza Co. and main pizza-maker. “For a year or so after that we were like, ‘Someone should really start this business’ and then one day we said, ‘Maybe we should start this business’”.

It wasn’t long after that this newlywed couple received what you could call a great, late wedding present.

“We got the truck as a gift and that started the wheels rolling, and that was in June of 2012. We spent the summer coming up with a business concept, we did some small fundraising, and then started building out the truck in January of 2013,” says Chris. “I worked with a local welder here in Nelson County, and we built and outfitted the truck from nothing. We used all repur-posed steel from either the Charlottesville Airport or from the UVa Hospital. The oven itself is almost ten inches of concrete and about 52 inches long.”

During this time, the truck wasn’t the only thing under construction. Blue Ridge Pizza Co. spent this time launching their web site, as well as utilizing numerous social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to help spread the news. And as you can imagine with a busi-ness such as this, Chris and Jessica spent a lot of time taste-testing the merchandise.

“We do a lot of not at all traditional pizza flavors that sell really well,” says Chris, referring to creations such as ‘Cool as a Cantaloupe,’ which pairs prosciutto ham, cantaloupe and arugula. “And for those, we go to an event with what we need for it, we make a couple, and let people try them. If they like it, then we’ll just add it to the menu right there and go with it. And we take suggestions from people on how to make it better.”

Flexibility and humility seem to be a couple of the key ingredients in the company’s recipe for success.

“I don’t have any sort of catering or restaurant background whatsoev-er, so when people come to me with flavors or pizza ideas, we’re always willing to give it a try,” admits Chris. “I just love pizza. I’ve always loved pizza. It’s my favorite food by far. And I never cooked in a wood-fired oven before. It was all kind of a learning period.”

So what makes a wood-fired oven superior to versions we find in most restaurants?

“It’s a traditional Italian-style oven, it is a dome shape, it looks like an igloo. The advantages to cooking in a wood-fired oven as opposed to a conventional oven are that you get a really nice smoky flavor, and you cook at a much higher temperature,” Chris clarifies. “The floor of the oven is around seven hundred and fifty degrees, with the dome of the oven in the upwards of twelve hundred. That allows for the pizza to cook really fast, it keeps the dough very moist and you get a good crust on the pizza, but you get a really nice soft texture on the inside.”

In the small amount of time that Blue Ridge Pizza Co. has been in operation, it has certainly been rising to the occasion. With their lengthy list of upcoming events, there are plenty of opportunities for you to hunt down this traveling pizza-truck.

“We have a menu before we go to an event, but all of our pizzas are made to order. Literally, someone orders a pizza, we take out a dough ball, we slap it out, which means we turn it into a crust, top it, and then it goes into the oven, and that whole process takes about five minutes per pizza,” says Chris. “When we’re busy, there will be six pizzas in the oven, and one will come out every fifteen to twenty seconds and one will go in every fifteen to twenty seconds.”

Their revolutionary pizza flavors can be found regularly at Afton Mountain Vineyard during Afton’s After Hours, Champion Brewing Company and Three Notch’d Brewing Company in Charlottesville.

“The Three-Notched event we do about once a month,” mentions Chris. “Because breweries no longer have to have food, they contract trucks to come out and set up. It benefits us because we have a place to go and it benefits them because it keeps people at their establishment longer.”

Serving the greater Charlottesville area successfully, while adding a second unit in the form of a pull-behind trailer and nearly doubling their team size is an impressive feat for their first year. But for Chris, it’s about more than making a lot of dough.

“We are a disabled veteran-owned business. I served in Afghanistan in 2010 and I was injured in a helicopter crash, came home and kind of spent a little time trying to figure out what I really wanted to do, because life’s too short… and making pizza is it.” BRL

What’s happening in Nelson?2014 first quarter residential real estate summary

Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson and besides being a Realtor, is a family business partner at Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery in Nellysford. Marlo provides real estate services in Nelson and surrounding counties.

Residential real estate sales in Nelson County may have ended on a positive note for 2013, but the harsh winter has certainly put a damper on the number of sales for the beginning of 2014. While fewer sales were real-ized, there have been some positive strides worth noting. Here is a quick market summary for Nelson County. *Sales figures were pulled from the Charlottesville Area Association of Realtors (CAAR) Multiple Listing Service (MLS).

Q1 Countywide Overview; 38

residential properties sold in Q1 of 2014 which represents a 30% decrease from the same time period in 2013 when 54 properties sold.

Q1 Statistical Comparisons; Q1 2013 recap: median $196,000, aver-age price $226,727, Average price per sq ft 140.10, Days on Market (DOM) 234. Q1-Q4 2013, year end recap: median $245,950, average price $267,153, Average price per sq ft 140.42, Days on Market (DOM) 187.

Q1 2014: median $220,000, aver-age price $287,801, Average price per sq ft 149.01, Days on Market (DOM) 105. The 2014 market reflects a slow start in terms of number of sales, but shows improvement on all other fronts, such as an increase in price for median, average price, and price per sq ft. The make up of the properties sold is reflected in the price increases. There were 6 (out of 38) properties to sell above 500k in Q1 of 2014 compared to only 1 (out of 54) that sold above 500k in Q1 of 2013. The reduction in days on market would indicate that sellers across all price points priced properties to sell. Properly priced properties can gener-ate quick action on behalf of buyers who may fear losing it to someone else. In addition, some of the proper-ties to sell quickly had been on the market previously at a much higher price. Value continues to play a major role in purchase decisions especially since home inventory remains high. Distressed sales, foreclosure and/or

lender owned, represented 13% of all Q1 sales.

Q1 Sales Summary by Locality; Nelson County sales encompass 3 main markets, Wintergreen (moun-tain) with 21 sales, Stoney Creek (valley) with 3 sales, and all other non-resort or county properties with 14 sales. When comparing Q1 2014 sales with Q1 2013 sales, county sales remained unchanged, but resort sales declined; County sales volume - 0% change, Wintergreen – 36% reduc-tion, Stoney Creek – 57% reduction. Another notable statistic is within Wintergreen (mountain) and the dis-tribution of sales; 57% of all mountain sales have been condos as opposed to detached, single family homes. The county locality with the most sales was Faber representing 36% of all county/non-resort sales. Last year Af-ton had the greatest number of sales; this shift may reflect buyers willing to flex on their location parameters in or-der to get more house and/or acreage for a similar purchase price.

Reflection and Projections; As previously mentioned Q1 sales are historically low. The cold and snow may have also been a major factor in sluggish sales. Now that spring has finally arrived, the market activity may increase. However, if sales in Q2 follow historical trends for Nelson County, it could be our slowest quar-ter. In the past 2 years, quarterly sales have been consistent with Q3 having the highest number of sales followed by Q4, Q1 and Q2.

Variables such as location, views, acreage, condition and features can affect values. For further explanation and comparison relative to a property you want to sell or purchase, contact a real estate professional.

If you’re friends with Trager Brothers Coffee on Face-book, then you’ve grown accustomed to – and rather fond of – the mug shots shared of happy baristas and custom-ers visiting the Lovingston coffee shop. Recognizing your friends and neighbors from the county in these fun snap-shots will be just as easy to do from TBC’s new location in the Rockfish Valley Community Center starting April 26th.

And although this move has bean the grounds for some heated debate on the Board of Zoning with concerns di-rected towards any odors emitted from the on-site roasting room, the overwhelming wave of support has pushed this project forward.

“This community center is trying very hard to make it this neat thing, and I don’t think people even know it really exists yet, but they’re starting to find out now,” expresses founder and roaster, William Trager. “So I think it’s really at the beginning, and we’re just queuing up for the wave. I think five years from now this whole place will be a completely different thing. I think it will be very vibrant, because it’s just such a wonderful facility and it’s perfectly positioned.”

Trager Brothers is excited to bridge the gap between the northern and southern sides of the county with this second operation. And aside from location, the RVCC comes with a lot of perks.

“I feel like the county needs to be linked. There is no

non-alcoholic venue on this entire corridor, unless you go to Crozet,” William explains. “There are so many soccer moms that I know that go to North Branch and stuff that come over that have a two hour gap to kill. They can come here, they can let their kids spill out, there are bathrooms, WIFI, fields, no leash laws in Nelson so their animals can kick it, and they can come in here and get coffee.”

Quality caffeination will be offered to all, whether they be Northies, Southies, Moms, Dads, teachers or bank tellers.

“We’ll have a brew bar here, so you’ll be able to get a French Press or a Chemex or pour overs, ya know we’ll be kinda fancy that way. Kinda like third wave-y,” says Wil-liam, who’s a West-coaster himself. “It’s really important to have the right equipment. We wanted a Probot because we wanted to be consistent with what we have over there [refer-ring to the Lovingston branch] and there’s a reason they are the industry leader.”

With a difference you can taste in every cup, stopping by their newly acquired venue will most definitely be an addi-tion to my own daily grind. Maybe I’ll make the mug-shot list for the North side, as I have already done for the South.

“The idea is to create a place where people can come that’s just coffee focused with an emphasis on quality. It will just be a really great spot. It will be like a third wave coffee place, but not pretentious. Our mission is quality, commu-nity and sustainability – that is TBC’s mission.” BRL

Kai Crowe-Getty and his brother, Bram were only around 11 and 8 when they decided to travel down the path of the musically inclined. Selling their souls in the name of music, they’ve traveled a long way since their first middle school band, Bluelava.

Their newest project, Lord Nelson, which began in 2012, is a funky collaboration of rock, folk and blues, with a sound as unique as its Nelson County roots.

“We learned how to play music in barns, basements, and field parties scattered around the county, so when it came time to pick a name for the band, it just seemed natural to pay respect to that land that brought us up,” tells Kai, who sings vocals and plays guitar in the band.

Younger brother and band drummer, Bram agrees.

“There is something about those mountains and swimming holes that makes you feel like you are rural royalty, even if you’re broke.”

And for serendipitous effect, the band’s new bassist, Adam Wilson, is actually a descendent of Thomas Nelson himself.

“I’m very much on board with their naming choice,” says Adam. “I went to school with Kai, and we both studied guitar under Joe Madison at Blue Star Music, so it’s been a blast to have our musical paths meet again.”

Since their album release last June, the band has been surging into the local music scene, booking gigs at familiar venues like Rapunzels Coffee and Books, The Whiskey Jar, and Fardowners. And although drinking beer and playing rock ‘n roll inside a church isn’t exactly the norm for this group’s upcoming show list, they can officially check it off their bucket list.

“This area is disproportionately weighted with great music and opportunities for artists. We enjoy playing all types of venues and gigs, from crowded bars and weddings to festivals and stages,” Kai explains. “The recent show at the Tom Tom Founders Festival was great because we’ve never played in a church before. They did an outstanding job with the production that night and the crowd was nice and rowdy.”

“We were hoping that playing in a church (The Haven) would make us Rock Gods,” Bram admits.

Having personally bared witness to both Bluelava and Lord Nelson, I can attest to the fact that on April 10, under those red, yel-low and blue spot lights that filled the grand ceilings of the church hall, in the presence of all who attended, kicked their shoes off and danced, those Lords were more than just mere men.

“This band has come a long way in a short period. We challenge each other constantly and hold ourselves to a high standard, which has been healthy in bringing out our best,” says Kai. “The most beneficial thing though, is that elusive magic we find onstage and are constantly chasing,”

To witness this elusive magic for yourself, check out Kai, Bram, Adam, Henry Barrett on Trombone and vocals, and Taylor Vactor on Electric guitar at their single release show at the Southern on Friday, May 23.

But don’t get your hopes up ladies. All of these Lords have Ladies, except the drummer – but apparently they’re a different breed. BRL

Pack A Picnic!

Thirty-some-odd years ago, Bruce Bertelsen was training for the Marine Corps Marathon – one of the many he’s run over the years. As he trained, he ran for hours at a time. One of these runs has ever since stood out from the rest.

“In the course of one of these runs, I started to get the ideas of a story,” said Bruce.

A story that is now a published novel: Beneath the Grid.

Beneath the Grid is an environ-mental thriller about a disgruntled EPA attorney named Chris O’Brien. Chris is already plagued by night-mares and job insecurity when he learns of a close friend and col-league’s “accidental” death. When yet another colleague is murdered, Chris teams up with others to find out why.

“I was an attorney and for thirty-plus years I was involved in both the public and private sectors working on environmental issues – principally clean air,” said Bruce, who has never written fiction before, but has always enjoyed writing non-fiction and read-ing thrillers and mysteries. “People say you should write what you know!”

But it wasn’t so easy to write. And it took several decades to get started, and then five years to finish. After moving to Nelson County (which may or may not have inspired the fictional town of Mason in Beneath the Grid), running marathons became a no-go, due to the hilly terrain. But unwilling to give up his long-distance courses, Bruce started walking mara-

thons and while he was out, he stockpiled ideas.

“So when I sat down, the fun was putting it down on paper and making it all fit together,” said Bruce, who walked about 4,000 miles during the course of writing his book, but didn’t carry with him any recording devices for his ideas. “Because once I had an idea, I kind of played with it as a walked. Most of the time it sort of stayed in my consciousness.”

Even though the backdrop of the novel is based on fact (and there’s even a little bit of fic-tion about the clean air program worked in), Bruce maintains that the novel is completely fictitious. Except perhaps for that part about “Mason” County … BRL

Priceless Beauty for aReasonable Price!

To Hedge or not to Hedge

One of the most misused concepts in landscaping is the successful hedge or screen and its components. My definition of a successful hedge is one that not only conceals the intended target but also rewards the eye by improving the view, not just hiding it. Contrary to popular belief, installing a single cultivar en masse around an existing eyesore or unwanted view does NOT draw the eye away and in most cases actu-ally draws the eye in – kind of like, ‘hmmm, I wonder what’s behind that curtain’. Dark and deep green shrub-bery creates a dark image on the eye that actually draws it in like a black hole. Adding to that effect are the one-dimensional attributes of such a planting which instead of acting like a canvas to throw color onto, act as the aforementioned phenomena. Light colors and layers against this background deflect the eye, coupled with the hard lines of a hardscape ac-tually control the eye and ultimately reward it – eye candy. So what are the components of the perfect screen?

One of the first rules of design that I learned at school was how to carefully and skillfully take an object that is not desired and turn that same area into eye candy and therefore a focal point for the landscape. For the purpose of this example, power boxes will be our subject since so many are poorly landscaped/hidden. This offending object is just over 2 feet tall and about equally wide. An English laurel such as Prunus laurocerasus ‘Schipkaensis’ or the Skip Laurel will be the founda-tion for our screen. Installing two of these on the corners and another in the middle (shading away from the unit) will create a triangle and our blank canvas – providing a clean green slate of around 10 feet in mature height. Add in three lower shrubs (3-4 feet in mature height – Annabelle Hydrangea

or equivalent) planted between the Skips and spilling out past one of the outside Skips (either side) to create an asymmetrical shape that will ultimately draw the eye to the side. Now add in your focal point – a birdhouse or other vertical object which will then draw the eye up to a ‘fixed line’ object. Sprin-kling in color (perennials or annuals) around the post of the vertical object and even in front of the Hydrangea further draws the eye away from our box. So instead of your eye searching for the ‘fixed line’ object behind the planting, it is satisfied to find an easily viewable object on the post.

In the case of a bigger object to screen, say another home or busy street, it’s best to go vertical with our deep green canvas. A prime candidate is Thuja (standishii x pli-cata) ‘Green Giant’ or Green Giant Arborvitae. This particular tree has become the preferred alternative to Leyland Cypress as it has less pest issues and is deeper rooted, therefore has less issues with snow loads and high wind damage. The preferred pattern is an intermittent zig-zag, installing more trees in front of the intended screen area flanked by single trees at the beginning or end (or both) to allow the pattern to bleed before and after the screened area. The end result draws the screen out more and allows for layered plantings intermixed with the screen. Add-ing in medium sized shrubs (dwarf boxwood, Andromeda, etc.) and even a deciduous tree (Japanese Snowbell, flowering dogwood, etc.) favoring the end where the single Green Giant is located adds interest to the area opposite where the eye sore ex-ists. Inserted in with the lower layer shrubs should be another ‘fixed line’ object – this time a lower one like a birdbath since we want the eye to go down and not up. Sprinkle in color around the birdbath and our hedge is complete.

MAY 2014 Blue Ridge LIFE 35

Dr. Charles Cole is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton. This column is provided as a service to readers of Blue Ridge Life Magazine and it does not necessar-ily reflect the views of the publishers of this magazine. If you have a question about your personal health, please consult your doctor.

Dear Dr. Cole,I get so many tick bites each year

that I am always worried about Lyme Disease. Is there something I can do to decrease the risk of getting it?

Spring has finally arrived and with spring comes the ticks. Although ticks can carry several different in-fections, Lyme Disease is the one we see the most in this area and the one people worry about the most. The incidence of Lyme Disease in Central Virginia has increased over the last decade and it is not an uncommon infection any more.

The best way to prevent Lyme Dis-ease, or any tick borne infection, is to avoid the tick in the first place. This means avoiding areas with long grass and walking in the center of trails. Using insect repellent on exposed skin and clothing can decrease the risk of tick bites. If you can’t avoid the ticks you should shower soon after coming inside and do frequent tick checks. Removing ticks as quickly as possible decreases the risk of infection. You should also check your pets and remove ticks.

If you do get a tick bite there are 2

approaches that can be taken. Under certain circumstances a single dose of antibiotics may be indicated. The In-fectious Diseases Society of America recommends preventive treatment with antibiotics only in people who meet ALL of the following criteria: the tick is a deer tick that is estimated to have been attached for ≥36 hours (based upon how engorged the tick appears or the amount of time since outdoor exposure), the antibiotic can be given within 72 hours of tick re-moval, and the person can take doxy-cycline. Otherwise treatment with antibiotics to prevent infection is not recommended and treatment should be given only if signs and symptoms of Lyme Disease develop.

So be sure to enjoy the outdoors. But do your best to avoid ticks, do frequent tick checks and check with your doctor if you have any ques-tions.

Strategies: Train Your Weak LinkWhen it comes to fitness and

sports, all of have weaknesses. Can you make your weak link become a strength? For example, I have sprained my left ankle badly two times where I had to be in an aircast for six weeks on both occasions and I have plantar fasciitis. So, when I run for distance, I have custom foot orthotics and proper shoes. I make sure to stretch and strengthen my ankle muscles. That little bit of extra attention along with learning running technique has improved my running and I am running better now than I was ten years ago. In addition to old injuries, weak links come in many forms: poor mental focus, lack of flexibility, decreased core strength, physical diseases, being overweight, low endurance, eating unhealthy snacks, allowing your temper to af-fect your game or not practicing your sport.

Where to start? Get honest. First, self - assess your weakness and write them down. Second, get tested through a fitness assessment to obtain

objective measures of your physical attributes. Third, develop a program to work on those areas. It is impor-tant to be disciplined when you start and it doesn’t necessarily take too much time. For example, if you have knee arthritis and enjoy playing ten-nis. Instead of playing and “getting by” with the pain, become proac-tive. Seek attention to learn how to strengthen the entire leg, become more flexible, learn agility skills and possibly get shoe inserts for shock absorption in your tennis shoe. Seek assistance by professionals to man-age the discomfort while strengthen-ing the leg and your tennis game.

A common thread during many of the strategies presented this year in BRL magazine has been the mental focus that is needed to get honest with yourself and achieve your goals. That may be the toughest link to develop in ourselves. Good Luck!
