A planning team is born

● Established in 2005 and is a subcommittee of the Blue Ribbon Plan Steering Committee

Mission: To provide leadership in securing comprehensive health & wellness education, information, and services across the continuum of care.

Vision: Our vision is for a community, who shares responsibility to become the premier model of a healthy community by embracing lifestyles of wellness.

Health & Wellness Planning Team

● Hosts annual health summit● 7 to date● Topics included tobacco use, childhood obesity, adolescent risky

behaviors and Affordable Care Act ● Several of the task groups were created based on feedback from

health summits

Hosted stakeholder meetings with business leaders, educators, physicians and healthcare providers, and social service agencies to gain feedback on their understanding of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Health Care Reform)

Healthcare Professions Recruitment and Retention Group

● Members include hospital CEO, CEO of FQHC, hospital medical staff coordinator and mostly community members (insurance agent, banker, city director, etc.).

● Objective: Recruit and develop health-care providers to meet the needs of the communities we serve.

● Accomplishments:

o Hosts Doctor’s Day appreciation events

o Planning a welcome party for new providers

o Provide personalized experiences for prospective physicians during site visits.

o Net of 20 new providers and 12 minority health professionals recruited to Sedalia/Pettis County in the past year.

Objective: To enable adolescents and parents to access information to help adolescents develop healthy lifestyles

● Starting with the health summit in October 2012, the Adolescent Health Coalition has held meetings with parents and guardians to provide educational materials and tools for communicating with their teens

● Develop and deliver a school based sexual health education program for 9-12 grade students

● For the 2012-2013 school year, the AHC plans to provide programming to the Sedalia 200 and Northwest school districts

● Develop a half day prevention workshop for 7-9th graders on internet safety, impact of drug/alcohol use, and safety in personal relationships

Started Start Now Talk Now website through the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services

Billboards to advertise the website

Recognized through the Missouri Department of Mental Health to focus on suicide and drug abuse in adolescents

Arranged for a Megan Meier presentation for high school students

Working with the Missouri DHSS to become a provider for an evidence based pregnancy prevention program – Teen Outreach Program, developed by the Wyman organization

Joined Health and Wellness Planning Team in March 2012

Members represent Early Head Start, Bothwell Regional Health Center, Birthright, LaLeche League, Pettis County Health Center, midwife from private practice, and SFCC nursing faculty

Activities: Developed a breastfeeding resource guide for the county Started a local LaLeche League Group for mother-to-mother

breastfeeding support Made and distributed breastfeeding cover-ups to new mothers Started the Mother-Friendly Workplace Initiative

A coalition of community organizations, agencies, and individuals working together through education and empowerment to promote smoke-free indoor air and tobacco-free lifestyles

●Presented to Sedalia City Council about the effects of second-hand smoke

●Contacted most council members individually

Made presentations to local restaurants and bars recognizing them as tobacco-free establishments

Purchased lighted signs to highlight tobacco free restaurants and businesses throughout Sedalia

● Surveyed likely voters to determine the interest in an indoor smoking ban – 61% in favor of a smoke free law.

● Collected signatures in favor of a smoke-free ordinance

● Received support from ACT Missouri to purchase banners to be placed around the community promoting stopping tobacco use.

● Billboard on highway 50

● Sedalia Parks have now become smoke free in designated areas

●Objective: Inspire and motivate the Pettis County community to make lifestyle changes that result in weight loss, and create a culture where healthier choices are encouraged

●Members represent Bothwell, Katy Trail Community Health, Pettis County Health Center, Pettis County Community Partnership, Boys & Girls Club of West Central Missouri

● Started in January 2012, after two years of planning

● 12 students selected from 142 applicants

● Students must share with others about their weight loss journey through media, blogging and social media

10 of 12 have lost more than 10 percent of their starting weight

Students have indicated their immediate family members have experienced weight loss as well
