Talking Health: Brain Beauty

How do we identify Brain Beauty? Is the brain beautiful if one does well in school or industry testing exams? Is the brain beautiful if

one expresses consummate empathy and/or heightened spiritual advancement? Is the brain beautiful if one excels on beating the Jeopardy buzzer? Or wins the football pool? Our health food store is about “Optimum”. Optimal immune health, optimal digestive function, optimum energy and heart function. Optimum circulatory performance, and how that brings better health. Our health food store should be the beauty-parlor for Brain Health. It should be where people want to go to make their brains better: and that is a heady proposition.

Everyday we walk among our fellow citizens, not knowing if we are walking past a brilliant mind, or a troubled mind or a wounded mind. There it is, nestled in its little cranial nest, the steering wheel of the ship that is the human: and we can either marvel or worry about the intellectual capacity of the other people on our planet. (I am sure we worry!??). We spend so much time judging how our peers dress, or their weight, or the car they drive: when the real judgement of a beautiful life can be found in the garden that is the beautiful brain!

The visuals. The brain is defined as “an organ of soft nervous tissue contained in the skull of vertebrates, functioning as the coordinating center of sensation and intellectual and nervous activity”. Cold science. Let’s consult an artist! Santiago Ramon y Cajal was the first person of Spanish origin (Basque Province of Navarre) to win the Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine in 1906 for his work in neuroanatomy and the histology of the central nervous system, [histology: study of the anatomy of tissues and cells using microscopy]. He was an interesting guy: part artist and part scientist—and the thoughts that he must have had as he conducted his inquires!?! Identified as “The Father of Modern Neuroscience,” Cajal was an artist who became obsessed with drawing the anatomy of what he saw—recorded in drawings—as he explored the brain and its switchboard cousin, the central nervous system. There is a beautiful book on his lifelong drawings, (and you can learn of the book and see some pics through

this quick youtube video: www.youtube.comp/watch?v=72IPPIt5iMw) – to see how earlier scientists began to explore the universe of our complex and beautiful

brains. Beautiful Brain: The Drawings of Santiago Ramon y Cajal can be a transfixing way to understand today the wonder grappled with by scientists at that time as to the miracle and complexity discovered in those early 20th Century pencil drawings. These were the textbook ideas that led to the next level of understanding! That our brains can even do that, and that these experiences are captured in history and shared by print (and internet) is all part of the awesomeness of what we can comprehend, with our brains!

The Brain, understood in linear representation, by Cajal; and from that artistic brain imagery, science leapt to understandings and advances that got us to the limitations that are our understanding today!

Now, with the marvels of modern science, 3D technology and other techno-experiences, we are able to make the brain even more front & center, “mind-blowing,” and studiable. But science is still eons away

from understanding what goes on in the generic human brain. Insofar as personalized medicine, let’s just say that we have a long way to go. We can slice and dice, and remove and prod and look and theorize—and produce journals—but to the individual, the person holding that brain (you) it is all about feeling, understanding and proper function. As wordsmith artist Bob Schneider says in the rhythmic song “Capn Kirk“, “I just want to feel good. I don’t want to hurt nobody. I just want to get a good time out of my life!” Science is doing its best, but our appreciation should be—and will be for centuries—left in some state of absolute awe.

Everyone should take a moment to look through the drawings of Santiago Cajal. He found and drew such beautiful anatomical representations... What I see is the brain as a congested neuronal garden; the brain is an organized labyrinth closet. Beautiful brain: BEING!

(I don’t want to speak over your head (brain humor here), and of course I am drowning in the magnificence of all this thought, but we all need at some point to reflect and appreciate the beauty that is our brain!) What to do about it? Well, quite simply, we need to feed our brain!

The average human brain is about three pounds, and six inches long. Our life experience and our mental development is captured, processed and stored in the spacious growth of our brain from the ¾ lb. that it is when we are born. Not much real estate there to work with: no extra storage variable to use up for storage or unwanted relics! The brain makes up less than 2% of our body weight (you do your own math!), yet it ‘consumes’ about 20% of the body’s energy when the body is at rest. The human brain is an interesting organ.

News today as I write: “Scientists have taken another step toward understanding what makes the human brain unique. An international team has identified a kind of brain cell that exists in people but not mice, the team reported … in the journal Nature Neuroscience." “This particular type of cell had properties that had never actually been described in another species," says Ed Lein, one of the study's authors and an investigator at the Allen Institute for Brain Science in Seattle.” (www.npr.org/sections/health-

shots/2018/08/27/642255886/a-new-discovery-may-explain-what-makes-the-human-brain-unique) My brain does what brains often do in these situations, and it says, “interesting!” It always usually comes back to nature; as they have named this peculiar and newly-discovered neuron, The Rosehip Neuron.

How does our brain do it, and will we ever learn that? That is not my chosen field of study: rather, I want to know how to best feed the brain. I am interested in lines of study that try to understand how our diet can influence the capacity of the Brain to function optimally, and to be Happy: and that, my fellow travelers, is really what Brain Beauty is all about!

Fatten it up! The most elementary factor needed for brain health is not what I want to spend the most time on here in this article. Our industry has spent the last 10-15 years understanding that we want to truly make our communities Phat Heads (oops: Fat Heads!) We need to build upon the knowledge that we have already determined, and which is also advancing with research every day. Everyone needs daily Omega-3s. The answer is in this fact: and while more Omega-3s (in conjunction with an effort to reduce Omega-6 consumption in our diet) is the best, #1-answer for optimal brain health —it is not the only solution. Blue Moose Consulting has written about the necessity of increasing our Omega-3 consumption, specifically through supplementation, and I hope that message rings loud and true for every day your store is open. Foundational. Given. Primary. But to create Brain Beauty, we need to continue to advance our thoughts (actions) and scientific understanding. Realize this, the Brain is an ecosystem. That collection of human parts up there is truly like a garden: it is the most beautiful machine every made…and its capabilities dwarf the mechanics of microchips and the evolutions that will inevitably replace them. We need to think about all the food that we can offer the brain. For Brain Beauty, let’s recognize the importance of Omega-3s for everyone as essential… and make sure our message in our stores is the loudest message possible, everyday. 100-1x over phospholipid-rich products, I have never really understood why every store does not sell 100-200% more Nordic Naturals® Omega-3™ Phospholipids? For optimal Brain Beauty, these fats are imperative.
