BLUE JAY corner By Chloe Sierks Founded in 1997, Netflix is an on-demand provider of mov- ies and television shows for a monthly fee. As of December 2015, Netf- lix had around 75 million sub- scribers worldwide. The major- ity of these subscribers stream movies and tv shows directly to their electronic devices us- ing the Netflix app, which al- lows its users to select movies or tv shows from a limited list. Although the app doesn’t offer every movie or tv show ever made like the company’s nor- mal DVD-by-mail program, it has quite the wide selection that is pleasing to the subscribers. In the past three years, Netf- lix's popularity has skyrocketed not only in the amount of sub- scribers but also throughout so- cial media. Over the past year, I have seen many posts on all the popular social media websites that have pertained to Netflix in some way. However, the most popular topic that seems to arise from these users is the concern of having an addiction to Netf- lix. Is this claim an actual con- cern for Netflix subscribers, or is the situation being exagger- ated? Addiction is a state character- ized by compulsive engagement in rewarding stimuli, despite adverse consequences. It can be thought of as a disease or bio- logical process leading to such behaviors. In 2015, it was discovered that Netflix users had watched 42.5 billion hours worth of stream- ing, and 61% of those users spent their time binge-watching television shows. The conse- quences for watching Netflix for this many hours are not as detrimental as other conse- quences brought on by more common addictions. It may, however, cause extreme lazi- ness and procrastination as well as headaches from staring at the electronic screen for longs peri- ods of time. Even though these conse- quences probably won’t cause Netflix’s viewers long-term harm, it is imperative for each individual to recognize when he or she just needs to turn off Netflix and walk away. Sadly, it is just not that easy. When I’m deep in a binge-watching ses- sion, I usually can find a mil- lion excuses to watch just one more episode. Before I know it, one episode has turned into five, and I’m stuck wondering where the day went. Many of my fellow Netflix users know this feeling all too well. Even though this habit has caused me to prioritize incorrectly and made me lose some sleep, I’m not actually concerned that I have an addiction to Netflix or will ever develop one. Becom- ing aware of the hours I have spent on Netflix, however, has helped me watch less and less each day. So, is Netflix addiction a great concern for our society? I per- sonally do not think so. I think it is up to the individual to pri- oritize his or her’s own time and decide how important watch- ing seven straight episodes of “Grey's Anatomy” really is. On January 27, Rock Port FCCLA sent six members and two chaperones to the regional STAR event competition at Northwest Missouri State Uni-versity.

STAR Events, which stands for students taking action with recognition, are competitive events in which members are recognized for proficiency and achievement in chapter and in-dividual projects, leadership skills, and career preparation. The students who were not par-ticipating in STAR Events were student-evaluator and timers where they got to experience all the aspects of STAR Events firsthand.

This year, the Rock Port FC-CLA chapter had one group par-ticipate in STAR Events. Paityn Alberti, Dayle Davis, and Chloe Sierks presented their project “Like A Diamond in the Sky,” in the category Illustrated Talk.

Dayle, Paityn, and Chloe had to give their presentation to three judges, consisting of two advisors and one student-eval-uator.
