This month’s selection of Day Trips on board the British Pullman and Northern Belle can be a perfect treat as that Christmas gift or, for our female readers, why not get together and head to the races for Ladies’ Day at Royal Ascot?

CRUISE MILESYOUR CRUISE MADE MILES BETTER

Blue

PICTURE THE SCENE. IT’S BLEAK MID-WINTER IN THE UK. THE DAYS ARE SHORT, THE SKIES ARE GREY AND THE WINDS CHILL. AND THERE AM I, SITTING ON MY BALCONY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PACIFIC, ROLLERS IN HAIR, BOOK BY MY SIDE AND A COLD GLASS OF BUBBLY IN MY HAND AS I WATCH THE SUN GO DOWN AND IDLY THINK ABOUT DRESSING FOR DINNER. PERFECT.

And that, to me, is the joy of cruising. Complete relaxation as you sail the seas and fill your days with as many - or as few - on board activities as you fancy, while you wait for the next port or island to appear magically outside your door.

When we first started cruising, about 15 years ago, I was astonished to find that so many of our fellow passengers were old hands at this malarkey.

“Oh yes,” said one couple in answer to my inquiry, “we’ve certainly cruised before. In fact this is our 42nd voyage”.

Back then, I couldn’t imagine how anyone could notch up such an impressive tally. But now I reckon that my husband and I are half way there already! As air travel becomes more and more stressful, the appeal of cruising grows ever greater. I love to unpack my clothes just once, settle into my luxurious cabin and know that we’re off to explore new and exciting destinations without having to move a muscle.

We’ve sailed around the Mediterranean many times, experienced the majestic wonder of the Norwegian fjords, crossed the Atlantic to New York, seen the Seychelles and bobbed around the Caribbean to our hearts’ content.

I’ll never tire of the joyous, laid-back lifestyle of the Caribbean - but recently we’ve been lucky enough to get the best of both worlds by combining the islands with a

voyage through the Panama Canal to the Pacific. And I can guarantee that your first transit of that extraordinary feat of engineering will be something you’ll never forget. In fact we enjoyed it so much that we decided to do it again - in the opposite direction.

And there are still so many places I’d love to visit. As I grow older, the lure of a full world tour is becoming hard to resist. I want to see Papua New Guinea, Fiji and Samoa. I’d love to re-visit Australia - where I was last seen buried underground in a coffin full of rats in “I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!”

And I’d be thrilled to sail down the Amazon.

So much world, so little time.

That’s why I value the help and expertise of Reader Offers. They know exactly what’s available across all the major cruise lines, where to find the best deals and how to put together a package that will suit your taste and needs. It really is the most convenient and secure way to book your cruise.

And, in these tough economic times, we all know that every penny counts. So it’s great to earn loyalty points with each booking you make with Reader Offers. You can use your Cruise Miles in all sorts of ways - from car parking to upgrades, or money off your next holiday.

And that’s something else I’ve learned about people who cruise: we all love it so much that even while we’re enjoying one voyage, we’re already planning the next!

NIGEL’S

The facilities are right up there close to cruise line standards, making for a great start to a journey across Europe.

Germany’s shipbuilding industry has enjoyed much success in focusing on passenger vessels, with Meyer Werft in Papenburg constructing ships for Celebrity and Norwegian amongst others. As the yard is many miles inland, newly launched ships have to be towed slowly out to sea along a canal which runs through farmlands; a sight which always draws vast crowds of spectators. Across on the Baltic coast, shipyards are busy building river cruisers for that booming sector.

In Hamburg itself, the famous Blohm + Voss shipyard has a gigantic dry dock right by the river facing across to the city centre. The sight of a vessel like Queen Mary 2 towering over the waterfront is quite something to behold! It was in this dock that Fred. Olsen undertook the complex ‘cutting and stretching’ of both Balmoral and Braemar just a few years ago.

During the cruise conference, I enjoyed catching up with former colleagues from Norway, and starting to plan excursions for our Hurtigruten voyage to the Arctic booked for January. We will be hoping for some

clear skies in order to see the elusive Aurora Borealis.

You too can go in search of the Aurora Borealis with Hurtigruten, please see page 43 for more details.

On the subject of northern destinations, I am following with interest the development of new itineraries around the top of the Pacific Ocean. Expedition ships are now sailing further north up the Russian coast to the Kamchatka Peninsula, whilst Alaska is featuring in ever more adventurous Pacific Rim voyages. I’d like to think that we helped pioneer this concept when Balmoral first operated a northern hemisphere Round the World itinerary. I must admit to being sympathetic for passengers trying to pack for springtime temperatures ranging from 40ºC in Singapore to 4ºC in Alaska! Today’s cruises are at rather more sensible times!

See pages 30 & 31 for an exotic Far East and Beyond voyage with Celebrity Cruises.

All too quickly another year has flown by, so in closing may I wish everyone an enjoyable Christmas time.

EVERY AUTUMN THE EUROPEAN CRUISE INDUSTRY ASSEMBLES FOR THE ‘SEATRADE’ CRUISE CONFERENCE, ALTERNATING BETWEEN MEDITERRANEAN AND NORTH EUROPEAN VENUES. THIS YEAR IT WAS THE TURN OF HAMBURG, A CITY WHICH MAKES THE MOST OF ITS MARITIME HERITAGE TO DRIVE TOURISM, WITH SUBSTANTIAL INVESTMENTS IN ORDER TO ATTRACT CRUISE LINER VISITS.

We drove across to northern Germany, allowing Sonja to drop me off and then visit her family in the old university town of Oldenburg - curiously enough another marine industry hub, albeit accessed by canal from the North Sea.

The wonderful overnight Stena Line ferries which speed smoothly across from Harwich to Hoek van Holland demonstrate just how far passenger ship design has developed. These enormous vessels swallow up hundreds of trucks, and then fit over a thousand passengers high up on decks 9 to 11.

REGION FOCUS: AZORES AND MADEIRA

he Torre de Herculés lighthouse and an extensive beachfront signal your arrival into La Coruña, where you may be surprised to find kilt-clad Galicians armed with

bagpipes marching the streets. It’s then adiós to Spain and olá to Porto. Ribeira manifests as its beating heart which, if this is the case, is accompanied by the main artery of the Douro River. Here, narrow barrel-filled rabelo boats float lazily under the iconic arch of the Dom Luís Bridge by day, while the plazas are filled with a convivial revelry in the evening, conducted by the tripeiros (locals).

Unwind with a couple of sea days before honing in on Europe’s westernmost point, the Azores, where humpback whales and tropical triggerfish surround this autonomous cluster of islands, strutting their stuff. There is ample solace and adventure for the discerning traveller on land; ironic considering it was once an alleged lost continent of Atlantis. São Miguel, the big brother of the chain, is righteously dubbed ‘the Green Island’, and with a notable trio of enchanting crater lakes, it’s a photographers

utopia; the Vista do Rei viewpoint flaunts both the emerald and sapphire waters of Sete Cidades; a visual treasure chest. Of the aforementioned lakes, Furnas is renowned for its ‘Cozido’ (a hearty stew), which is cooked underground, while the heart-stoppingly beautiful Lagoa do Fogo lies untouched in its volcanic caldera. The now-defunct mass export of oranges bestowed São Miguel with a much needed injection of wealth, evident in the classic movie-like scene of Ponta Delgada’s

black basalt and white limestone streets. Charismatic Praia da Vitória, on Terceira, sheds a contemporary vibe. Terceira itself is a mixed bag with more cows than people, and

most nights the enthralling Touradas à Corda bullfighting traditions ensue on the streets.

If Madeira is considered small, then Porto Santo is microscopic, although Christopher Columbus deemed this island fit for his marriage. Contrasting to the predominate calculus matter found here are the intense hues of Funchal; admire the flamboyant flora of Jardim Botânico, brave a traditional

toboggan ride, or work off a legendary Levada walk with some more fortified wine, famous in this region.

Lisbon, made a municipium by Julius Caesar, was always destined for historical significance. Nowadays, bright yellow trams intersect and Lisboetas chinwag on Alfama’s streets, complemented by a soundtrack of infectious fado music, whilst the Romanticist Pena Palace of Sintra overlooks the city from afar. Santa Justa’s high

street elevator is a jaunty facet, but more in line with a sea-facing city are the pleasant beaches of Estoril and Cascais. A perfect finale for a perfect discovery.

KIELBASA IS A COMMON TYPE OF CENTRAL AND

EASTERN EUROPEAN SAUSAGE, AND IS A STAPLE

OF POLISH CUISINE. IT COMES IN MANY DIFFERENT

VARIETIES; SMOKED OR FRESH, AND MADE WITH

PORK, BEEF, TURKEY, LAMB, CHICKEN OR VEAL.

This Polish dish is quick, easy to make and very tasty. The smokey

kielbasa steals the show in this hearty home-style all-in-one meal,

however if kielbasa is not available you can replace with another

fragrant sausage.

This is an Ideal meal for the cold, dark and wintery nights to come.

CRUISE LINE INTERVIEW: DAVID CHIDLEY

WHEN WAS THE COMPANY ESTABLISHED?

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line was founded in 1968, and we have been changing the way the world cruises ever since!

WHAT IS YOUR COMPANY ETHOS? From its very beginning, our company has been guided by the principles of designing ships and creating itineraries that lead to a cruising experience like no other. All of our on board amenities offer us the opportunity to see how we can WOW our guests every time they cruise with us.

HOW MANY SHIPS ARE IN YOUR FLEET?

While we’re always adding to our fleet, Royal Caribbean currently has seven ship classes (Quantum, Oasis, Freedom, Voyager, Radiance, Vision and Sovereign). That’s a total of 22 ships, with Quantum of the SeasSM set to sail in Autumn 2014.

WHAT IS THE MOST POPULAR DESTINATION YOU SAIL TO IN 2013/14?

For our UK guests, having two ships sailing from Southampton has proven to be very popular as guests don’t have to fly. Due to their popularity in 2013, we will have Independence of the Seas and Adventure of the Seas sailing from Southampton in 2014 once again, taking in various Mediterranean, Canaries and Northern Europe itineraries.

WHAT ARE YOUR UP AND COMING DESTINATIONS?

We now travel to 233 destinations in 72 countries on six continents, so there are so many destinations to choose from! We are, however, noticing a lot of interest for people wanting to experience fascinating cultures and vibrant cities in the Far East.

WHAT ARE THE FUTURE PLANS FOR THE COMPANY?

It is a very exciting time for Royal Caribbean International right now. After the success of the Oasis Class, the world’s largest and most innovative ships, which have been in service for a couple of years now (Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas) we have just started work on our THIRD Oasis Class ship to be launched in 2016. Oasis of the Seas will be visiting Europe in 2014, sailing from Barcelona, and a transatlantic ocean voyage from Southampton! We are also incredibly excited about the launch of our newest class of ship - the Quantum Class. This first ship, Quantum of the Seas, will start sailing in Autumn 2014. There is a transatlantic ocean voyage from Southampton to New York available to book now! The second ship, Anthem of the Seas, will sail in 2015.

WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON MISCONCEPTION ABOUT THE COMPANY?

That we only go to the Caribbean! We now travel to 233 destinations - however the Caribbean is where we started and we are industry leaders here. We even have our own private islands - one being Labadee sitting on the north coast of Haiti, surrounded by beautiful mountain slopes and exotic foliage, our private paradise. This exclusive destination offers pristine beaches, breathtaking scenery and spectacular water activities.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR TYPICAL CRUISE GUEST?

Anyone and everyone will find elements of a Royal Caribbean cruise that would appeal

to them, due to the great variety of cruise destinations, range in size of ships, the fantastic service and facilities on board. You can expect to see a varying age range amongst our guests, and single travellers will cruise alongside couples, groups of friends and multi-generation families!

DO YOU MAKE ANY INAUGURAL VISITS IN 2013/14?

Once again, having Oasis of the Seas in Europe is a first - with the highlight being the Caribbean ocean voyage from Southampton on the world’s largest ship - one not to miss - on 14th October 2014. We also have the brand new Quantum of the Seas sailing an ocean voyage from Southampton to New York on 2nd November 2014. This will be its inaugural cruise!

WHAT IS YOUR FONDEST MEMORY OF THE CRUISE LINE?

When I joined the company almost 10 years ago, I was fortunate to attend the launch of our brand new ship Jewel of the Seas. The feeling I got when seeing it for the first time will always stay with me and I get the same thrill when I see the faces of people seeing their first ever cruise ship.

ARE THERE ANY INSIDE SECRETS YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH OUR READERS?

All of our entertainment on board is fantastic. However, if you sail on one of our ships which has an Ice Rink - you have to go and see the Ice Show. It is spectacular - and something you will be talking about long after the cruise has finished!

On board Navigator of the Seas®, the small amount of food waste generated is incinerated on board in keeping with our environmental policy Save The Waves.

REGION FOCUS: THE BRITISH ISLES

BEAUTIESBritish

The intimate size of Fred. Olsen’s Black Watch ensures access to the smaller, picturesque harbours of the English Channel, Atlantic Ocean and Irish Sea. As you sail, the circumstances that have shaped their individual cultures shift. The Anglo-French aura of Guernsey gives way to the Scandinavian and Viking influences of Orkney and the Celtic heritage of the Scottish Isles and Ireland. Listen to the ‘English’ language in a variety of regional brogues as you order a local speciality in any of the unique ports, the words rolling, bending and twisting off the tongue as evocative and mysterious as the landscapes through which you may sail, walk and tour.

From St. Peter Port’s harbour, small narrow streets climb sharply, concealing an interesting array of cafés and shops while Tobermory, in Mull, is wreathed by a waterfront terrace of brightly coloured town houses that have made it a destination for many a film crew. The Outer Hebrides offer up Stornoway on Lewis, ever a landing point for seafarers through the ages due to the shelter it provides. Sailing onward, Kirkwall has an imposing cathedral and many small museums while Belfast and Dublin present more familiar cityscapes with urban bustle, a vibrant feel and plenty to see and do.

Just as the towns visited en route offer contrasts so too do the dramatic landscapes. In Orkney the upright stone circles that sit eerily on the open moorland seem almost ‘civilised’ compared to the stark magnificence of the Old Man of Hoy. This 450ft rock column has been isolated from the cliffs behind by the pounding winter seas which will, in time, bring the whole edifice crashing down to the sea bed below.

It may be that you are a connoisseur of a pint or a dram in which case this delightful itinerary offers two interesting diversions. The waters of the River Liffey are said to enhance the flavour of ‘the black stuff’, meaning that Guinness from the Dublin brewery has a taste and texture that no other brewery can replicate. So too the single malt whiskies from the Highland Park Distillery in Kirkwall, Orkney, which are produced using barley dried in peat and heather-fired kilns lending the flavour a unique smokiness. Don’t take our word for it as pre-bookable tours to both will offer the opportunity to find out for yourself.

It is not necessary to travel to far-off continents to experience a wealth of fresh experiences; sometimes the compelling is nearer than you think.

WORLD CRUISE HIGHLIGHTS• MONTEVIDEO - Explore the old town which is rich in historic buildings and monuments interspersed with attractive gardens and grand squares

• MAGELLAN STRAIT - In 1520, Ferdinand Magellan sailed five ships from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. Follow in the footsteps of this historic adventurer as you cruise through the Magellan Strait, flanked by the rugged mountains of Southern Chile

• MOOREA - Lush, jagged vistas, encircled by deep blue ocean, resemble a vast star-shaped garden, branching out into eight valleys. You can walk barefoot on clean, quiet beaches or swim in the crystalline lagoons, where snorkelling opportunities abound

• RAROTONGA - This paradisiacal island sits like a jewel in the Polynesian Sea. There are countless picturesque lagoons which are perfect for swimming and snorkelling or cross-island hiking trails which will lead you to breathtaking scenery

• SYDNEY - Aside from the symbolic Opera House and Harbour Bridge, the nearby Blue Mountains make for an ideal trip off the beaten track

• AKAROA - This quintessentially French settlement is situated on a picturesque harbour, flanked by the volcanic slopes it nestles on. The ideal way to get about is on foot; whilst doing so, admire the colonial architecture, dainty cottages or largest penguin colony on mainland New Zealand

• SAN FRANCISCO - Cruising under the Golden Gate Bridge is one of the world’s greatest travel experiences for it acts as a gateway into this fascinating city. Fisherman’s Wharf, Alcatraz and a trip on the city’s 130-year-old tram system are all worth experiencing

were the talk of the ship, but she also conjured up western-style food for those who preferred it. We also had an Italian assistant hotel manager, Amanda, but the rest of the crew were from Myanmar and could not have been more caring and helpful.

The cruise itself was a fascinating insight into the lives of the local people, who incongruously have mobile phones (they have their own network so ours don’t work there) but live in ramshackle huts and are pleased to receive even a few slices of bread as a gift for the children.

We rode a trishaw to the ‘Returning Home Pagoda’, so nicknamed because the bronze Buddha statue it housed was stolen by the British but returned to Myanmar on the orders of Queen Victoria, and rode in an ox cart to Gwechaung Fort, built between 1860 and 1863 against a possible British attack (in the event the British army did attack, in 1885, and took the fort in one day).

We saw the golden Shwesadaw Pagoda and 100ft high sitting Buddha in Pyay, hundreds of Buddhas carved into cliffs as we sailed past Akauk

20 months after I promised myself I would cruise the Ayeyarwady River in Myanmar with Orient-Express, I finally made it, sailing a seven night cruise from Yangon to Bagan on the company’s new 50-passenger ship Orcaella, which launched in July. It’s a long way to go for one week so I’d suggest throwing in a few days travelling from Singapore to Bangkok on the Eastern & Oriental Express, also operated by Orient-Express, for the ultimate Asian experience.

It was actually my second time in Myanmar, but the first, last December, was on an ocean cruise and I only stayed two nights in Yangon. We had enough time to see the city and have a day trip to Bago, but I was still itching to see more of the country.

It was well worth the wait. Orcaella is lovely, much like a traditional river cruise boat without a bow from the outside but unmistakably Asian inside, from the beautiful teak flooring to the excellent local cuisine prepared by Ban Sani, a Thai chef. I loved her noodle dishes, and her soups and curry lunch

Taung and hundreds of the 2,237 pagodas and temples that are in Bagan (there were more than 10,000 in the city’s heyday, between the 11th and 13th centuries, before many were destroyed by earthquakes).

Luckily Danny, our guide, resisted taking us to each one, but instead picked out four of the best, including Ananda Temple, with its 46ft high standing Buddhas - there are four, but only two are originals - and Sulamani Temple, which we were able to climb for a fantastic view across the Bagan plain. Sadly, cloud put paid to our plan to see the same view that evening with the sun setting over the pagodas but the settling

mist gave it a wonderfully eerie feel.

Each day when we returned to the boat, cold towels and drinks were waiting, and they took our shoes off for cleaning. A real treat. I don’t think mine have looked so shiny since the day they left the shop!

You do spend a lot of time cruising on this itinerary but each day there was entertainment on board, from local dancers and a puppet show, to a cooking demonstration and talks on life in Myanmar from a Burmese professor who was born during British rule. We were also each given a longyi, the local skirt worn by both men and women, and then had a lesson on how to wear it, which proved a lot harder than it looks.

The longyi was just one gift left each night on our beds. We also had a piece of gold leaf, similar to which covers many temples and stupas, a hand massager, handcrafted soaps and a wooden owl, a symbol of good luck.

The beds were wonderful, incidentally, and the pillows seemed to melt from under you as you laid your head on them. I was in a State cabin, which is the middle grade accommodation, but I believe it was the best room on the boat; big and perfectly located by reception, with floor-to-ceiling French windows, a sitting area, desk, large bathroom with shower and a walk-in closet.

There were some downsides to the cruise, though, most notably the NAP (Not Another Pagoda) disorder that a few of my fellow passengers went down with. It’s a bit like temple fever, for those of you who have cruised the Nile, but luckily the cure was quick and easy. Get them back to the ship and into the bar (beers, soft drinks and bottled water is included in the cost of the cruise, but there is a charge for wine and spirits) and they are soon back to normal. It worked every time!

s this is the last issue of Blue Horizons in 2013 (where has the year

gone?), may I take this opportunity to thank everyone for reading my column over the past 12 months and wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Here’s to plenty of cruising in 2014.

REGION FOCUS: MACHU PICCHU

Machu Picchu, Peru

As the sunrise crests over south America’s Andean mountain range something rather special becomes illuminated; an incredible sight unlike anything else on earth takes shape, and in the overwhelming silence of this mystic, misty mountain top, the remains of an ancient civilisation comes to light. One can marvel over photographs and enjoy the many descriptions of Machu Picchu, but to be there and to see with

your own eyes is the only way to completely appreciate the numerous remarkable aspects of this fascinating place.

Often described as ‘the lost city’ of Machu Picchu, this ancient Inca city in the clouds was brought to the attention of the world in 1911 by explorer Hiram Bingham. Bingham was looking for an altogether different ancient Inca site when local farmers led him on a perilous trek high into the Andes. They brought him to a place that the world had all but forgotten, except by those who lived in The Sacred Valley. To this day there is still much mystery surrounding Machu Picchu, sitting almost 8,000ft above sea level; why this ancient city was positioned in such a remote and lofty place is still unknown. The remnants of stone buildings match the contours of the mountain as the different levels of this mountainous society can be seen, from the residential areas and temples to farming plateaus. One can’t help but be amazed at the architectural sophistication on display as you

gaze on the serenity of this enchanting place.

The journey to this ancient city atop the mountain is almost as marvellous as the destination itself, and on the Vistadome train, with its large panoramic windows, including windows in the ceiling, you won’t miss a thing. The valleys deep and mountain peaks are simply breathtaking as the train navigates its way through The Sacred Valley of the Incas. Travelling at a comfortable pace so as to take in every last bit of spectacular scenery, the train follows the meandering Urubamba River all the way to its final stop at Aguas Calientes for Machu Picchu.

A trip that also includes journeys to, among others, the wonderful city of Cusco, the historical capital of the Inca Empire and also Peru’s current capital, Lima, is a wonderful contrast between the ancient and modern aspects of a tremendous country rich in beauty and history. Words will not do this once-in-a-lifetime trip justice; you’ll just have to go and see it for yourself!

REGION FOCUS: RIO CARNIVAL BRAND NEW

Carnival

The

Against the backdrop of incredible scenery, which features stunning beaches that stretch for as far as the eye can see, undulating mountains so picturesque in the distance, not to mention the beautiful Cariocas (the name given to the native Rio inhabitants), all under the gaze of the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue, Rio has a lot going for it. But it’s the annual Carnival that perhaps affords the city most of its attention, both nationally and worldwide. The carnival in Rio is a spectacular extravaganza of colour, music, dancing and fun. It’s a time when the city, and indeed, the whole country, will put everything on hold and join in the celebrations. Bar the performers and anyone involved in Carnival-related events, most of the city will stop working so they can fully enjoy the festivities - such is the importance of this event in the Brazilian calendar. The history of what is now a gargantuan event has a somewhat mixed origin. The name Carnival seems to have its origin in the Italian ‘Carnevale’ festival meaning ‘to remove meat’; a Catholic tradition of indulgence and merriment where revellers will celebrate in this time before having to sacrifice the eating of meat for the 40 days of Lent. This would have been spread throughout Europe and

eventually brought to Brazil by Portuguese settlers, where over time it would adopt other influences and become something that is uniquely Brazilian.

Samba Samba is the beating heart of the Rio Carnival. The rhythmic drums, the flamboyant costumes and the impressively energetic dancing is what the festival is probably best known for. The music and dance is an evolution of the styles brought over by west African slaves and it is now all put on display for the world to see. The Sambadromo in Rio is a purpose-built exhibition area and is for all of the participants of the Carnival to parade down and display their wonderful floats, costumes and dance routines. It is a long alley where spectators line either side in bleachers and marvel at the brilliant pageant procession passing by. It goes without saying that seats in one of the stands are in high demand.

It’s a wonder, it’s an experience, it’s unrivalled by anything like it in the world, and all in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Let the rhythm take control.

ONCE A YEAR RIO DE JANEIRO COMES TO LIFE LIKE NO OTHER TIME - IT THROBS WITH AN INFECTIOUS ENERGY THAT FILLS THE AIR FOR DAYS. A CITY WITH PLENTY OF ENERGY AND EXCITEMENT YEAR-ROUND TURNS IT ALL THE WAY UP TO ELEVEN. IT’S TIME TO CELEBRATE; IT’S TIME FOR CARNIVAL.

ARCTIC CIRCLE

Northern Lights, Norway

REGION FOCUS: NORTHERN LIGHTS

IN SEARCH OF THE AURORA BOREALIS

Like many of the world’s greatest natural phenomena the northern lights are beautiful, elusive and enigmatic. They have been recorded throughout history and evidence of their existence is found in many cultures. For some they signify the work of God. For us they are an exciting bucket-list favourite.

WHAT ARE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS? THE SCIENCE BIT…

The northern lights are caused by solar activity. Solar flares send charged particles into space in the form of solar winds. When these particles reach the earth many of them are diverted away. However, some reach the upper atmosphere at the Polar Regions, and this is where the magic happens. At around 100km above the earth’s surface the solar particles collide with atmospheric particles and become ‘excited’, at which point they emit light, so causing the dazzling light shows we dream about. The colour of those lights depends upon the type of gas particle the solar particles collided with: oxygen is greenish yellow whilst nitrogen produces crimson light.

WHERE TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS

The aurora usually takes place in the auroral zone, which is between 3 and 6 degrees. This means that Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Canada, Alaska, Greenland and Iceland are all good locations. Having said that, there are times during periods of high magnetic activity when the lights can be seen much further to the south. Despite the fact that the lights are often seen in the UK and Ireland, Norway is still one of the most popular places to see them.

FINDING THE PERFECT CONDITIONS

They say the best time to see the northern lights is from September to April: autumn, winter and spring. Between 5pm and 2am is optimum. This isn’t necessarily because the lights only happen in that time because they can happen at any time. It’s just that the chances of seeing them are better. To witness the aurora at their best you need cloudless skies and lots of darkness. So the winter, when it’s dark for most of the day above the Arctic Circle is ideal. However, spring and autumn are also considered to be good times because there is still more night than day after the autumn equinox.

LET THE LIGHTS SHINE ON YOU

Blue Horizons December 201342

As predicted by NASA, the graph above shows the

sun’s solar activity. In its peak, you have the best

chance of witnessing the magnificent Northern

Lights. The good news is that the next few winters

should have high solar activity (Solar Maximum), so

this is an ideal time to book your Northern Lights

cruise with Reader Offers.

With an overnight stay on board, delve into ‘Lion City’s’ soul. A city tour whisks you 344ft high atop Mount Faber, exhibits its grandiose colonial offerings in Parliament House and City Hall, and dunks you into Chinatowns and Little India’s ethnic enclaves. Thian Hock Keng Temple’s elaborate details pay homage to Mazu, Goddess of the Sea. Cornucopias of pretty plant life, most notably Singapore’s darling orchids, are showcased in the Botanic Gardens. During December, 200 tropical trees representing different countries and cultures are the talk of the gardens. One can also marvel at the abundant avifauna flitting about Jurong Bird Park. Orchard Road is the entertainment core of Singapore and during this festive period, transforms into a magically illuminated winter wonderland.

If you’re looking to escape the same old Christmas

and New Year festivities, river cruise maestros Swan

Hellenic are serving up a jolly journey of Southeast Asia,

encapsulating the crème de la crème of Indochina. With

savings of £1,000pp and complimentary excursions along

the way, this is sure to top your Christmas wish list.

Once docked in the ‘Pearl of the Orient’, perhaps switch to a red-sailed junk boat for a watery jaunt around world famous Victoria Harbour. On land, the assortment of silk, jewellery and Chinese works of art at Stanley Market is worth a browse, and the traditional printing presses of Sheung Wan hark back to ancient times. Flee the crowds with a hike on the famed Dragon’s Back trail, which rewards with sensational panoramas, or on Lantau Island, ascend the less strenuous steps leading to the gargantuan Tian Tan Buddha. The Buddhist sanctum of Po Lin Monastery is minutes away. Over in Kowloon, barter for a piece of Chinese Jade or be thoroughly enlightened at the Hong Kong Museum of History.

As Minerva shimmies up the eastern coastline into Nha Trang, the gleaming white Buddha of Long Sơn Pagoda will most likely be the first sight to greet you. Easily accessible by foot are the Po Nagar Towers, which houses hundreds of ancient relics. Get up close and personal with the local communities in Da Nang, which has a village temple, husking mill and rice paddies, or get some glorious white sand under your feet on Non Nuoc Beach. Monkey Mountain is home to the Linh Ung Pagoda and Vietnam’s soaring Guan Yin statue. To the South, cross the symbolic Japanese Covered Bridge of Hội An or in Huế, visit the historic Thiên Mụ Pagoda, which overlooks tranquil Perfume River; the banks of which are dotted with the fascinating Tombs of the Emperors. Rewind to the Nguyễn dynasty, and seek solace within the Citadel of the Forbidden Purple City, widely regarded Huế’s prime attraction. Further North in Hanoi, lose yourself in the many rural areas adorning the Red River Delta or behold a captivating show at the Water Puppet Theatre. Heavenly Halong Bay, renowned for its lumbering limestone karts; some with grottos ripe for exploration; caps the end of your Vietnamese affair.

IMAGINE A SPECTACULAR BALL IN THE THROES OF LIQUOR AS CHANDELIERS JITTER TO A BOLD NEW BEAT. THEN, SUDDEN AS A TRUMPET, THE LIGHTS GO OUT WITH THE GUESTS AND THE BALLROOM IS GUTTED. JUST SO, ON THE ADVENT OF WWII, THE CRUISING INDUSTRY CEASED. SHIPS AT SEA WERE ORDERED TO PORT ON A ZIGZAG COURSE UNDER BLACKOUT CONDITIONS. ONE BY ONE, THE WORLD’S MOST GLAMOROUS SHIPS WERE SHUT, STRIPPED AND FITTED FOR WAR. FOR THE NEXT EIGHT YEARS, PLEASURE CRUISING WOULD CEASE TO EXIST.

n 1940, three giants of the cruise-world awaited their fate in New York harbour - the SS Normandie, RMS Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth. The Normandie, France’s current flagship, was a radical new design featuring

a slanting clipper-bow and bulbous forefront beneath the waterline. Combined with a slim hydrodynamic hull and powerful steam turbo-electric propulsion, Normandie had whipped the Blue Ribband off Italy’s SS Rex. Funnel advancements created vast interior spaces while a third false funnel concealed bulky equipment such as the latest mod-con: air conditioner units. Her Grand Lounge was comparable in size and spectacle to the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles. If you were ridiculously wealthy you’d be swanning through one of her deluxe apartments: the Deauville indulged with multiple bedrooms, a private deck and a dining room with baby grand piano.

RMS Queen Mary rivalled Normandie’s facilities with two swimming pools, a music studio and lecture hall, global telephone connectivity, dog kennels, beauty salons, a three-storey grand salon and the first ever Jewish Prayer room. Although luxuriously appointed, she appeared modest in comparison to Normandie which was deemed ultra-Deco to the point of elitist intimidation. But the QM offered something superior - affordable luxury for an emerging market: the modern American tourist. With nearly as much emphasis on furnishings and facilities in Second Class, and comfortable ‘Tourist Class’ accommodation replacing 3rd Cabin, the QM steamed into prime position full to capacity.

Between ’38 and the early 40s, gambling ships were also enjoying a winning streak. Besides the aforementioned SS Rex, there was

another Rex anchored in international waters off L.A.’s coast - a gambling ship run by Anthony ‘The Hat’ Cornero. With space enough for 2,000 gamblers and crew, including gourmet chefs, waitresses, an orchestra, croupiers and gunmen, the Rex was a hot-spot for prohibition’s escapees, ferried out in water-taxis for cards and French cuisine. But the success of the Rex was its downfall - after the State District Attorney caught wind he ordered the Rex to cease and desist; an order that, ironically, was outside state jurisdiction. Cornero escaped charges.

By law or by war, ships and their playgrounds were shut by ’41. By ’43, liners had been converted. The Île de France, Normandie’s predecessor, became a prisoner of war camp. Cunard’s queens triumphed as troopships. Normandie, during conversion at New York pier, caught fire and capsized. Deemed too expensive to restore, she was scrapped in ’46.

In that same year the QM returned troops and their G.I. brides to America. In ’47, Cunard-White Star (as the merger was now known) finally matched the times and trends that Normandie had accommodated, and the QM was upgraded with 577 Tourist Class cabins (along with air conditioning). Both she and the QE dominated the transatlantic through to the end of the 40s and long into the 50s. But their veteran predecessor, the Aquitania, was most impressive: having served in both world wars since 1914, she once again returned to cruising her chaps and chapettes until 1950 at the grand old age of 36.

Next issue: Horn-rimmed glasses and rock n’ roll - it must be the 1950s! Hop on board for a retro cruise experience.

Inspired by sailors after a visit to the French coast, Coco Chanel

introduced the Breton Stripe top to the fashion world in her 1917

nautical collection, as worn by Doris below and still fashionable today.

Nautical attire became especially modish during the patriotic 40s. Sailor pants with wide legs and high waists were favoured by women requiring

flexible comfort for work and leisure.

you can see the setting sun move across one of the chamber's

doorways and, on each and every Winter Solstice, the sun shines

directly up the tomb's passage filling the inner chamber. A
