It has been quite a winter for most of us. Record snowfall, cold temperatures, and blizzard conditions on occasions have made calving, for those of us who are January-March calving enthusiasts, quite an adventure weather-wise. Touch wood, for the three of us, calving has gone well.

Calving is an important part of the cattleman’s year. As it starts we are extremely excited to see the new calves with fresh genetics and the old tried and true genetics. A huge part of a successful calving season is the proper mating plan and the breeding of the very best cows we can raise. AI’ing, embryo work and herd bull selections enhance each breeder’s calf crop. You will see that we talk about our cows a lot throughout the footnotes. The reason for this is because we take great time and pride in selecting cows that work and mate them to bulls that work. Cows and bulls that work should produce calves that also work. If they work for us they should work for you.

The Blue Collar Bull Sale group has been working very hard to provide new and fresh genetics as well as tried and true ones for all our past and future customers. Our sale offering is the result of our pursuit of “Affordable, Honest, Hard working cattle that’ll get’er done”.

You will notice that we have attached a graph of the results of last year’s sale. When we analyzed the data it demonstrated to us that our bulls are very affordable for any budget with 49% of our bulls selling for $2500 or less.

Each year we bring bulls to town that are the best we have. The three of us have been chatting, and all feel that this is the deepest, most consistent and best group of bulls and heifers we have offered at the Blue Collar.

The bulls are fed grain and hay which are tested and analyzed to create a balance ration to maximize feed efficiency, promote growth, testicle and semen development, grow good hair coats and provide longevity. The bulls are held in large pens or pastures for ample exercise and roaming.

We all have young families and our cattle need to be content around children. Cattle that are easy to handle are essential in all our operations; therefore, good temperament in all our bulls is a must.

We have also made some changes to our sale staff. This year we have added Castlerock Marketing-Shane and Tammy Castle- as our sales consultants and block man. It is very exciting to have them join us and we look forward to their professionalism and expertise in the cattle business as we move forward as a sales group. Escalade has surpassed all expectations at J Square S Angus. He has an ability to stamp his progeny as his own. Escalade’s calves at birth are very smooth and have lots of vigour. Like Escalade himself, his progeny have a great hair coat along with an excellent disposition. His sons are all very mature looking and have lots of testicles. His daughters are very angular and feminine. Escalade’s dam is an outstanding mother cow that continues to produce year after year for Matt and Leanne Glasman of Glasman Farms. Escalade stood alongside her at The World Angus Forum in Calgary, Alberta, MLE in Brandon, Manitoba and Agribition in Regina, Saskatchewan. We purchased Blackman 8311U from Bone Creek Angus in the spring of 2010. He was the high selling bull that day at $9900. We felt that he was the best bull we could come across that spring. He had a unique pedigree for ourselves and our customers, he had great feet and legs, deep and broad body and ample scrotal development. Blackman has compiled a nice set of EPD’s. His females look like they are going to be great. This spring is the first group of Blackmans we are going to be breeding. We are quite excited about the prospects here. There isn’t enough you can say about this bull. We purchased this bull from the 2009 SAV sale. He is a direct son of the infamous Traveler 004 bull and comes from one of the most powerful cows in the angus industry. His dam, SAV Heiress 1184, has sold over $240 000 worth of sons all over the world from their past sales. This bull was quoted as “as thick, muscular and powerful as ever produced in SAV’s 67 year history.” His full brothers include SAV Heavy Hitter 6347, the top selling bull of the 2007 SAV sale and SAV Payroll 5281, a feature bull of the 2006 sale. He is also a brother to SAV Mandan, SAV Predominant, SAV Density and SAV Net Worth, all top sellers of their respective sales.

Here we have a bull that is sheer power. He is impressive in his eye appeal, structure and numbers. He has gained 3.65 lbs. per day to 365 days of age, check out his

weaning and yearling weights. 79Z possesses great legs and feet, excellent hair and excellent scrotal development. The Pioneer calves come out easily and really grow. They have big rumps, broad tops and deep bodies. Pioneer 79Z’s dam is a beautiful female we purchased as a bred from Soo Line. She has produced calves we have either kept in our herd or sold as breeding stock each year. I would suggest that if you wanted to add performance to your calves and keep females with good udders and maternal qualities you will want to look at the guy. Last year her bull calf sold to Demetry Procyk from Fort Qu’Appelle. A paternal sister sold to J & S Angus from Kenaston, SK in the Touch of Class Sale. This bull is a very powerful and has unique genetics for us. As a result, we are retaining 1/3 semen interest. This of course will have no impact on the breeding use for the bulls by his new owners.

Pioneer 75Z is a stylish bull out of Ruth 85P. He has solid numbers starting with a moderate birth weight and moving to above average weaning and yearling

weights. He gained 4.19 lbs. per day to his 365 day weight. 75Z comes from a terrific cow family. Ruth 85P has produced a bull calf each year but one. The only year she had a heifer we kept that female and she is the dam to the lot 3 bull in this year’s sale. Any females which go back to the Ruth family should be excellent mama cows. This bull should be able to style up your calves while providing them with solid growth and functionality for breeding stock. Now here is a bull that will ap-peal to your calving ease needs, desire for pounds at weaning and yearling weights and eye appeal. 103Z’s birth weight and EPD’s

are in line to recommend him for use on heifers. His weaning and yearling weights are well above the breed average and at the top end of our pen. He has gained over 3.5 lbs. per day to 365 day weight. This is real appealing for a calving ease bull. As you can see from her picture 103Z’s dam Ruth 81S is a deep bodied, beautifully uddered, structurally sound cow. We took her picture this past fall after weaning. She has had 6 calves to date-this year’s calf a bull, one fe-male who is producing in our herd and 4 bull calves that have all gone through the Blue Collar. This includes last year’s offering that sold to Morris Klimchuk from Roblin, Manitoba. Based on the history with the Ruths, any females from this bull should be kept. Pioneer 103Z was a member of our 2012 Harvest Showdown Reserve Grand Champion pen of bulls. This bull is halter broke. Be sure to take a close look at this sale feature type of bull.

Pioneer 20Z is an end of February bull that has really come on since weaning. You will notice his 1469 lb. adjusted yearling weight. He gained 4.55 lbs./day

since weaning. This bull would be recommended for heifers. 20Z dam, Lucy 20N, is a deep broody cow. She is a consistent producer. One of her daughters 28T is working in our herd and has been designated as a Canadian Angus Association Elite Dam. A wise cattleman told me that any genetics that produce Elite designated cattle are ones you want to get your hands on. You will appreciate 20Z for his style, smooth structure and performance ability.

This is a calving ease bull we would recommend for heifers. All the Pioneer 6X calves come out easy and have a real will to live. We purchased Pioneer 6X

from Willowview because of his style, deep body, ample scrotal development and calving ease potential. His calves have not disappointed us. Pioneer 16Z is from one of our few Ambush daughters we have in production. She is a very complete U cow. Last year’s heifer calf from 35U sold through the Blue Collar sale to Windy Willows Angus Farm from Hodgeville, SK.

Quantum 106Z is a very, very good bull. He is thick, deep, great feet and leg, large scrotal, excellent hair. It seems anything Quantum have been gold for

us. We love the females, as they have gone on to produce fantastic calves. We calved out our last first calving Quantum daughter this spring and we are nothing but impressed with her, especially her udder. 106Z is from Quantum 83W who was our high selling bull in 2010, selling to Windy Willows Farm. 106Z looks very similar to 83W in many ways. Quantum 83W has been producing for 3 years at Collin and Michelle’s. Last year his first calves went through their sale and did very well. Both the bull and heifer calves were well received. If you want a bull that will add thickness, depth and style to your calves, I believe that this is the bull for you. He has excellent EPD’s and numbers to support him.
