Introduction
Blu-ray (BD) is a next-generation optical disc format.
The format was developed to enable recording,
rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD),
as well as storing large amounts of data.
The format was developed by the Blu-ray Disc
Association, a group representing makers of
consumer electronics, computer hardware, and
motion pictures.

The companies that have jointly established the BD
specifications are Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG,
Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung,
Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson.
The name Blu-ray is derived from the blue-violet
laser it uses to read and write to the disc.
The “e” was intentionally left out of the name due to
trademark restrictions.

3rd GENERATION:Blu-ray disc (BD): --- 25/50 GB-Next generation optical disc format.-Developed by blu-ray disc association (which includes
Apple, Hitachi, HP, LG, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony)
-Wavelength of laser which reads data: 405 nm-Color of laser: Blue-violet which was developed by

Life Span: In the case of ordinary discs , the discs life is
less.
In the rewritable version , as re-writing is done repeatedly to one area of the disc most probably , the inner perimeter limiting the disc life.
BDFS is designed so as to avoid this problem , by using a system that uses free disc spaces with equal frequency
![Page 9: Blu ray disc](https://reader033.vdocuments.mx/reader033/viewer/2022061300/54c8c1364a79598c568b45a5/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Cost: Cheapest production cost.
Capacity: The Blu-ray disc enables the recording,
rewriting and playback of HD video up to 27GB of data on a single sided layer.
It is enough to put 2.5 hours of HDTV recording on it
It also can record over 13 hours of standard TV broadcasting
![Page 10: Blu ray disc](https://reader033.vdocuments.mx/reader033/viewer/2022061300/54c8c1364a79598c568b45a5/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Robustness: Stronger resistance to scratches and
fingerprints the protective layer is hard enough to prevent accidental and abrasions and allows fingerprints to be removed by wiping the disc with a tissue.
Compatible: The BD drives are designed to be backward
compatible, i.e. CD and DVD’s work equally well with the BD drives.

Hard-coating technology
Hard-coating technology provides resistance to:- Finger prints- Marks- Scratches- Dust
Various hard coating technologies make Bly ray disc most durable and family -friendly”
Much more ROBUST than today’s polycarbonate-based CD/DVD’s (and HD DVD’s)

Types Of Blu-ray Discs
SINGLE LAYER :- Can hold data up to 25/27 GB that means 2 hrs of HD
video or about 13 hrs of standard video.
DOUBLE LAYER :- Can hold data up to 50 GB that means 4.5 hrs of HD
video or more than 20 hrs of standard video.

Advantages
record one program while watching another on the disc .
automatically search for an empty space on the disc to avoid recording over a program.
access the Web to download subtitles and other extra features.
Has the potential of up to 54MB/s read and write speeds.
Allows for high definition 1080p movies to be marketed.

Recent Development
Blu-ray 3D
The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) created a task
force made up of executives from the film industry
and the consumer electronics and IT sectors to help
define standards for putting 3D film and 3D television
content on a Blu-ray Disc.
Sony has released a firmware upgrade for PlayStation
3 consoles that enables 3D Blu-ray Disc playback.
