Department of Physics and Engineering Chair’s Summary 2019 Peter Stine

Department Update

The Department of Physics and Engineering had a busy 2019. Our faculty and student community of scholars conducted research on topics including Rydberg physics, protecting cities from climate change, the efficiency of human locomotion, designs for photovoltaic energy harvesting, and identifying faint oscillations in stars. Our Electronics Engineering Technology majors designed and built an Engine Control Unit and an Energy Efficient Homestead.

The year included our visit from ABET for accreditation of the Electronics Engineering Technology program and the PASSHE five-year reviews of our Physics and Health Physics programs. We also saw the retirements of two of our long-term faculty members: David Simpson and Ghassan Ibrahim. We wish them well for the future and will certainly miss them at Bloomsburg.

This report lists some of the highlights of the department for the past year.

Enrollment

As of fall, 2019, 88 students majored in disciplines within the department, with Electronics Engineering Technology comprising the largest group.

Graduating Seniors The department graduated 14 seniors during 2019 including:

Retirements Dr. David Simpson retired from Bloomsburg University after sixteen years of service. He served as a director of our Health Physics program, whose discipline is designed to protect the public from harm from radiation. Dr. Simpson’s research focused on health effects of radiation and led to published results on topics including lead aprons in hospitals, indoor radon levels, and the misuse of handheld x-ray fluorescence devices. He always included BU students as co-investigators in his research. During his years at Bloomsburg, Dr. Simpson served as a volunteer for the radiological emergency response team (PaRAP) for the State of Pennsylvania. He encouraged volunteerism with his undergraduate students. For many years, he served as the University’s radiation safety officer. Dr. Ghassan Ibrahim retired from Bloomsburg University after Fall 2019 after fifteen and a half years of service. He was an integral part of our Electronics Engineering Technology program. He taught a variety of course in his specialty including radio frequency effects and communications systems. He completed vital work to ensure continued program accreditation by ABET. He served with our industrial advisory board and frequently volunteered to promote the University. Dr. Ibrahim’s research focused on applications of radio frequency identification systems. His projects included a method for tracking blood units in medical centers and a “smart box” for securing delivery of controlled substances. He investigated the problems associated with radio frequency identification in environments with fluorescent lighting.

Senior Design Projects Electronics Engineering Technology seniors presented senior design projects in December 2019. They included: Engine Control Unit (Steve Kunkelman, Mark Minier, Joe Intrieri, Shawn Hale) Energy Efficient Homestead (Adam Beck, Cameron Farr, Lewis Kamamo, Emily Mottern) Research Presentations Students presented results of research from independent study projects at The College of Science & Technology Research day in April , 2019.

• Jarrett A. Willis “Investigation of Potential Sources of Release of Fission Products in the Environment in the Absence of Nuclear Incidents” (First place award: Field based research).

Electronics Engineering Technology co-ops As part of the Electronics engineering Technology program, students gain practical experiences by working in a six month co-operative program with industry. PLC workshop for students Grantek presented a four-hour hands-on workshop on campus. The program, which was completed by nineteen electronics engineering technology students, presented an overview of systems integration, PLC software and hardware, and programming and testing.

Visiting Scholar Pierre Bataille from the University of France visited the department during the summer and fall semesters to conduct research in the UltraCold laboratory. Pierre delivered a lecture “High Spin Magnetic Quantum Gasses” on September 13, 2019.

Laboratories The Department of Physics & Engineering has nine laboratories dedicated to teaching.

• Physical Science laboratory • Two laboratories for General Physics • Industrial Technology Laboratory • Electronics Laboratory • Radio Communications Laboratory • Advance Physics Laboratory • Nuclear Physics Laboratory • Health Physics Laboratory

In 2019, we received new oscilloscopes with function generators that will serve our Electronics Engineering Technology majors in our Manufacturing Processes laboratory. The Communications Systems Laboratory received new digital multimeters and new soldering irons. We upgraded the labVolt modules for our Electrical Machines and Power Systems course, General Physics laboratories received new equipment including new dynamic tracks, photogate pulley systems, sine wave generators, string vibrators, and centripetal force kits. upgraded the function generators and vector network analyzer for engineering technology labs and replaced the projectile launchers for the general physics labs. The nuclear physics laboratory received new amplifier/pulsers and power supplies. Research labs include: The Astrophysics Laboratory, in which ongoing investigations focused on analyzing delta Scuti and gamma Doradus variable stars as observed by the Kepler Space Telescope and the recently launched Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS).

Ultracold Bloom is designed to produce temperatures close to absolute zero to produce Bose Einstein condensates.

• The Power Electronics Laboratory, where activities include modeling and simulation of hybrid energy-storage systems consisting of aircraft generators, ultracapacitors, Li-Ion batteries, and flywheel subsystems and PSpice simulation of 3 GHz RF power limiters, including SiC PIN diodes.
