MATCH UP: For the third consecutive season, Bloomsburg University opens

its season against Ashland University. Th e Huskies have won the previous two

editions of the battle: in 2009, the Huskies edged the Eagles 10-7, and 2008

featured a come-from-behind victory, 49-42. Th e Eagles feature 15 returning

starters from a 6-5 team that tied for fi fth in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate

Conference. Bloomsburg returns 13 starters from a team that fi nished with the

third best rushing defense in the nation.

THE HEAD COACHES: Huskies coach Danny Hale (West Chester ‘68)

enters his 18th year on the Bloomsburg sideline having racked up a 144-49-1

(.745) record and the most wins in school history. For his career, Hale is 184-

62-1 and his winning percentage of .747 is ranked among the top 20 active

coaches in Division II. Hale has led BU to six playoff appearances, including

the latest in 2008. He has been honored as the PSAC East Coach of the Year 10

times, the AFCA Regional Coach of the Year nine times, and was named the

AFCA National Coach of the Year following the 2000 season.

Lee Owens (Bluff ton ‘77) has a 41-25 record in his fi ve seasons as Ashland’s

head coach. He has led the Eagles to NCAA playoff appearances in 2007 and

2008, putting together a 17-6 record over that span. Prior to Ashland, Owens

was the head coach at the University of Akron from 1995-2003, compiling a

40-61 record.

PSAC PRESEASON POLL: Th e PSAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll was released

at PSAC media day on August 2 with Bloomsburg slotted second in the

Eastern Division. Th e Huskies received one fi rst place vote, while West

Chester, was ranked fi rst despite not receiving any fi rst-place votes. Out in

the West, California, the 2009 PSAC Champion, was selected to defend its

Western Division title. Here’s a look at the rest of the voting:

2009 SEASON

STATISTICS

SCOUTING ASHLAND: (By Sandy

Gholston, Special Writer for the GLIAC)

Th is is a year of transition for Ashland

as it will play without the steady arm and leadership of quarterback Billy Cundiff , a

three-year starter and former All-American passer. Entering preseason camp, the top

candidate to replace Cundiff might well be Taylor Housewright, who played in fi ve

games last season and completed 3-of-9 passes for 12 yards. Ashland welcomes back

38 returning letter winners including 18 on off ense and 19 on defense. On the other

hand, the Eagles lost 25 letterwinners while returning 16 starters.

If Housewright can comfortably step in, however, he will have two talented receivers

in Christian Livingston, who had 57 catches, 634 yards and fi ve touchdowns, while Joe

Horn had 45 catches, 677 yards and seven touchdowns. On the line, the Eagles bring

Justin Magruder, center Matt Knez and tackle Kyle Stout. Look for D.J. McCoy to be a

solid candidate to take the lead role carrying the football out of off ensive backfi eld.

On the defensive line, Matt Stoinoff had eight tackles for loss last season and 6.5

sacks while linebacker Carmon Wolfe totaled 64 tackles and 5.5 tackles for loss. In the

defensive backfi eld, Quinton Scott had a banner 2009 season with 65 tackles, a team-

best 9.5 tackles for loss, three sacks and two interceptions.

Handling kicking duties again this season, Gregg Berkshire, a junior, made good on

16-of-20 fi eld goal attempts last season and converted 2-of-3 in the range of 40 to 49

yards.

August 27, 2009

BLOOMSBURG-Senior running back Stefan

Adams ran for 104 yards, including a key 46-

yard run in the fourth quarter, as Bloomsburg

University defeated Ashland 10-7 in a battle

between two nationally ranked football teams at

Redman Stadium.

Th e 13th-ranked Huskies (1-0) got on

the board fi rst with a 28-yard fi eld goal by

senior Jon Koenig at the 11:11 mark in the fi rst

quarter. Th e kick came after a nine-play, 29-yard

drive that was set up by a 42 yard kickoff return

by senior cornerback Jesse Cooper.

After 15th-ranked Ashland’s (0-1) fi rst

drive stalled at the Bloomsburg 34, the Eagles

tried some trickery when punter Derek Reidel’s

fourth-down pass was intercepted by sopho-

more cornerback Oscar Rivera. Th e Huskies

then started an eight-play, 85-yard drive that

ended when senior quarterback Dan Latorre

bolted into the endzone from eight yards out to

put Bloomsburg up 10-0.

Th e Huskies defense controlled Ashland

for most of the game, forcing two fumbles, two

punts and stopping the Eagles four times on

fourth down plays through nearly three quarters

of play. Seniors Justin Presley and Anthony

Smith led a Bloomsburg goal line stand late in

the second quarter, coming up with three stops

inside the Husky one yard line.

Th e Eagles closed the Bloomsburg advan-

tage to three late in the third when Carlin Isles

scored from 50 yards out to make the score 10-

7. However, the Husky defense stifl ed Ashland’s

fourth quarter drives, registering three sacks

and forcing Billy Cundiff into 4-of-11 passing

for just 24 yards.

Smith led Bloomsburg with 11 tackles

while Presley recorded eight, including three

sacks. Smith, senior Alphonso Nathan, and

juniors Marcus Zimmerman and Todd Givler

were also able to get to Cundiff , combining for

three sacks.

Latorre fi nished the game 16-of-28 for 158

yards, while rushing for an additional 18 yards

on eight carries. Four of Latorre’s runs went

for key Bloomsburg fi rst downs. Senior Jordan

Weisman and sophomore Branden Wright

each caught four passes for the Huskies.

*Poll as of 8/9/10 (records as of 8/30/10)

HUSKIES IN THE PLAYOFFS: BU has made the NCAA Division II playoff s in

three of the past fi ve seasons and seven times overall. Th e Huskies claim a 7-7 overall

playoff record, including a 5-2 mark games played at Redman Stadium.

Th e Huskies also reached the NCAA playoff s after the 1985, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2005,

2006 and 2008 seasons. In 2000, Bloomsburg went 12-3 and advanced to the NCAA

championship game, eventually losing to Delta State in the title contest. Th e team

reached the fi nals after rallying from a 19-point defi cit against UC-Davis in the

national semi-fi nals to post a 58-48 win.

PSAC EAST AT A GLANCE: Here’s a look at what’s going on around the PSAC

East.

Record Th is Week Next Week (9/11)

Shippensburg 0-1 lost to Shepherd, 35-27 vs. Gannon (1 p.m.)

West Chester 0-0 at Delaware (9/2, 7 p.m.) vs. Edinboro (1 p.m.)

Millersville 0-0 vs. Assumption (9/4, 12 p.m.) vs. Lock Haven (1 p.m.)

Bloomsburg 0-0 at Ashland (9/4, 1 p.m.) vs. Clarion (1 p.m.)

C.W. Post 0-0 at American Int’l (9/4, 1 p.m.) vs. California (1 p.m.)

East Stroudsburg 0-0 at Pace (9/4, 1 p.m.) vs. IUP (6:05 p.m.)

Kutztown 0-0 vs. St. Anselm (9/4, 1:05 p.m.) vs. Mercyhurst (6:05 p.m.)

Cheyney 0-0 vs. Lincoln (n) (9/5, 3 p.m.) vs. Slippery Rock (1 p.m.)

CONSISTENT SUCCESS: Over the past fi ve seasons, the Huskies have recorded

the best overall winning percentage (.817) of any PSAC school, tallying 49 wins and

only 12 losses. BU’s conference record over that span (27-4) is identical to that of

West Chester and second only to that of California (30-2), which had a .813 (52-12)

percentage overall.

A FAREWELL TO ARMS: Both the Huskies and Eagles said good-bye to star

quarterbacks last season. Th e Huskies will look to Lafayette transfer Pat Carey to

replace four-year starter Dan Latorre under center. Latorre fi nished his career having

thrown for 60 touchdowns and 7,370 yards, the second-best career total in school

history. Th is year, Ashland will be fl ying without former QB Billy Cundiff , who

played in 41 games for the Eagles and ranked in the top-fi ve nationally in passing

effi ciency in each of the past three seasons. Cundiff threw for 9,143 career yards

and 79 touchdowns, completing 646 of 1001 throws (64.6%) and allowing only 16

interceptions.

MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU: Th e 2009 Huskies ranked No. 3 in the nation

in 4th-down defense, stopping their opponents on 19 of 23 (82.6%) fourth-down

conversion attempts.

TURNOVERS: Th e 2009 Ashland Eagles ranked No. 7 nationally in turnover margin

(+1.09 per game), collecting 10 fumbles and 11 interceptions, while losing only seven

and two, respectively. Th e Huskies forced 20 turnovers and lost 16, averaging +0.36

on the year.

Page 5: Bloomsburg Football Game Notes - Ashland

Bloomsburg University Football Game Notes 5

THE HUSKY OFFENSE: For the fi rst time since 2005, Dan Latorre will not be under center for the Huskies. Junior Pat Carey, a

transfer from D-I FCS institution Lafayette College, had a productive spring and will take the reins of the Huskies. Behind Carey

will be Mike Wagner, a two-year backup to Latorre, and Adam Diltz.

Last season, RB Derrick Price was named fi rst team All-PSAC East for the second straight season after earning Rookie of the

Year honors as a freshman. Price will have to pull extra weight with the absence of Kenny Domzalski, who will be sidelined this

year due to injury. Look for Franklyn Quiteh, who had an excellent spring, to add depth. At fullback, Matt Cox will see starting

action with Mike Quintans backing up.

Senior Cory Stiger leads the receivers after making a team-high 28 catches with seven touchdowns a year ago. Tyler Guise, who

missed last season with an injury, is healthy and ready to play, while Chris Tressler, who also plays baseball for the Huskies, will

return after making 21 catches last season. Also look for Matt Marchioni, Keter Crosby, Ryan Dickerson and Glenn Hutton to

see playing time this season.

Senior TE Ben Weaber, caught 25 passes last season and is also a top-notch blocker. Also looking for playing time at the position

will be Mark Daniels.

Th e off ensive line will be one of the strengths of the Huskies in 2010 with lots of experience among the fi rst string. Th ree players

return as starters this season: Daryl Kurtz at tackle and guards Pat Casey and Justin Walker. Brian Clarke, who saw time a year

ago, will get the nod at one of the tackle spots. Also working into the rotation for the Huskies will be Kenny Orlando, who moves

over from the defensive line, while Brandon Allen returns after sitting out last season.

BLOOMSBURG DEFENSE: Th e Huskies return four linesmen who fi lled starting roles last season, including Marcus

Zimmerman, Todd Givler, John Pettine and Dave Huot. Joining that group in the rotation will be Ryan Olaf, who moves from

linebacker to the line, Dave Onorato, Shaun Moore, Marc Francola and Mike Schlauch. Also, look for contributions from

Chris Kennedy and Josh Chromiak, who returns from injury.

LB’s Mike Varanavage and Th omas McFarland, combined to make over 160 tackles a year ago and will start again this season.

In the middle, Jarrett Pidgeon is ready to step into the starting role for

the Huskies. Th e Huskies also have added depth at the position with Ryan

Feldman, Sean Clift, Jeff Owsley and Pat Michael.

All-PSAC East selection Oscar Rivera returns as DB, while the Huskies also

feature seniors Alex Landis and Dan Oliver and junior Vince Browning

as starters. Rivera and Landis were both starters last season and combined

to make over 100 tackles last season, while Browning and Oliver combined

for 75 tackles as back-ups. Joining the group will be Justin Rivera, Dan

Haverstock, Mark Scattene and Terrell Oglesby.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Jared Shannon returns to handle kickoff s for the

Huskies after notching seven touchbacks a season ago and holding

opponents to just 20 yards per return. Look for Shannon and Dan Fisher

to handle extra points and fi eld goals, while Fisher will also contend with

Drew Snyder for the punting duties. Specialist Ian Murray will do the long-

snapping for special teams. Look for Tyler Guise and Alex Landis to share

time in the kick/punt return role.

Coach Hale in Road Openers

OPEN SEASON: Th e Huskies are 31-41-1 all-time in

season openers. Danny Hale is 9-8 in season openers

with Bloomsburg, 3-6 on the road.

FROM THE ARCHIVES

By Bloomsburg University Archivist Bob Dunkelberger

BU Coach Danny Hale, a one-time student at Green High School in

Akron, Ohio, returns to coach only his second college game within

the borders of the Buckeye State. Bloomsburg’s record against teams

from Ohio is 2-1. Th is includes a 10-7 home win over Ashland

last year, a 49-42 victory at Ashland in 2008, and a 43-7 loss at

Youngstown State in 1990.

Th e Huskies’ all-time record against out-of-state teams is 36-30-2:

a 22-8-1 record at home and 14-22-1 on the road. In these games

Danny Hale is 16-10, a mark of 8-3 at home and 8-7 on the road.

Bloomsburg has won at least seven games for 11 consecutive years.

Th e only Division II program with a longer streak is current National

Champion NW Missouri which has won seven or more for 14 straight

years. Th e all-time PSAC record in this regard (while a conference

member) is held by IUP, which had at least seven victories 13 con-

secutive years from 1984-1996.

Th e 2009 Husky defense held nine of their opponents to no more than

14 points in a game. Th e only other team in school history to accom-

plish this feat was the undefeated 1948 squad that surrendered only

19 points in nine games and recorded seven shut-outs.
