Much of the discussion on how to improve and make the event more meaningful centered on efforts to avoid boredom and decrease the total length of the program by such means as moving the Citizens Award’s to another meeting, and cutting down on the amount of information from student applications read on introducing them. Other means of obtaining cri-tique information voiced included polling the students and high school representatives who accompanied them.
The remainder of the meeting time was a period of fellowship enjoyed by all.

Meeting of GJB SAR Finance Committee
A meeting of the GJB SAR Chapter Finance Commit-tee was held at the request of the GJB SAR Chapter-Pres., J. Gordon Bidner to discuss the financial state of the Chapter and the feasibility and sustainability of increasing the size of the Scholarship given the stu-dent/students at the annual Good Citizenship/Scholarship Banquet. Those in attendance at the meet-ing included Kelly Gray, Chairman, Dave Asbrook, Don Hyland, and Dr. Phares O’Daffer.
After consideration of the current financial state of the chapter the committee concluded it was possible, be-ginning in 2017, to increase amount of the award/awards from $1000-$2000. They did leave up to the Citizenship Committee the manner and amount in which it would be allocated.
The committee also decided to look into the matter of changing banks.
Meeting of GJB SAR Citizenship Committee
The GJB SAR Citizenship Committee consisting of J.
Gordon Bidner Chairman, Bill Hammitt, William White, Virgil Short MD, Lee Wilder, Dr. Phares O’Daffer, and Alternate David Ashbrook, held a
luncheon meeting, May 5, 2016, at the Busy Corner’s Restaurant in Goodfield after having received the re-port of the Finance Committee. The matters before the
committee were the format of the annual Good Citi-zenship/Scholarship Banquet and how to allocate $2,000 of Scholarship money.
All in attendance were agreed the length of the event should be decreased and after considerable discussion the following measures to accomplish this were decid-ed:
Efforts to begin the Program by 12:20 PM should be made
Adult Good Citizenship awards be moved to the Constitution Week meeting
Speakers should be limited to the Keynote Speaker
When students introduce their guests, hold the applause until all have been introduced
The amount of comments about each student should be limited
The SAR and DAR’s in attendance should be introduced as a group
The report from the Finance Committee indicated it was financially feasible to increase the Scholarship money awarded to $2000. After considerable discus-sion on its allocation it was decided to give two $1000 awards.

Dr. Clark Spencer Killingsworth
Illinois No. 7988
National No. 172031
Date of Admission – July 15, 2008
By Descent From
John Killingsworth
Service of John Killingsworth
T he Killingsworth family name can be traced to Northumbria, the northern most country of England. The family is believed to
have descended from the ancient Boernicians, a mixture of Scottish Picts, Angles, and Vikings, dating from about the year 400
A. D. The surname is spelled variously as Killingworth, Chillingworth, or Shillingworth, and is said to be one of the oldest surnames
or clans that can be traced to the territory along the Scottish/English boarder. Early appearances of the Killingsworth name reveal a
family of great antiquity seated in Northumberland where they held a manor and estates in that shire. The Killingsworth Coat of
Arms is officially documented in Burke’s General Armory. Although our ancestor, John’s pre-Revolutionary War lineage is undocu-
mented, the family name links his descendants to the Anglo-Saxon legacy—the tradition of the peoples participation in their gov-
ernment.
John Killingsworth was born February 19, 1750. He assisted in establishing American Independence while residing in Halifax Coun-
ty, North Carolina. John served as a Musician in Captain Darnel’s Company of Col Edward Buncombe’s 5th Regiment in the Conti-
nental Line (the regular troops) where he was trained to fire a musket. Although the regiment initially served under the command
of Francis Nash and joined the troops of General George Washington in March 1777, they later served under the commands of
Charles Lee, Robert Howe, Benjamin Lincoln, Horatio Gates, and Nathanael Greene, as part of the Southern Department.
Shortly after John’s enlistment on August 1, 1777, Buncombe led his men into the battle of Brandywine on September 11, and Ger-
mantown on October 4. After Buncombe’s death in May 1778, the regiment saw action at the Battle of Monmouth, the Siege of
Savannah, and the Siege of Charleston. Since John became a private in January 1778 and served for the duration of the war, his
regiment would have been assigned to Sumner’s Brigade on January 11, 1779 and reassigned to Armstrong’s Brigade on June 3,
1779. The regiment was captured by the British Army on May 12, 1780 at Charlestown, South Carolina and was officially disbanded
on January 1, 1781.
At the close of the war, John married Sarah X (last name undocumented) in ca. 1783. Sarah was born February 12, 1750. Their eight children were born in North Carolina: Thomas (b. Sept. 2, 1784, NC), Reuben (b. June 4, 1787, NC), Eliza (b. Feb. 27, 1790, NC), William (b. Feb. 29, 1792, NC), Nathaniel (Dec. 23, 1793, NC), Anderson (b. June 3, 1797, NC) Isaac (b. Apr. 25, 1800, NC), and Sallie (Dec. 17, 1802, NC).
The Killingsworth family was among other pioneers who left Halifax County, North Carolina in the early 1800s. The family settled in
Knox County, Tennessee. Sarah died sometime between the 1830 census and an 1833 deed. Similarly, the exact date of John’s
death is unknown but would have occurred sometime after a Knox County deed dated October 25, 1833

Betsy Ross Facts - Interesting Personal Information
Betsy Ross marr ied her fir st husband at the age of 21 and was widowed at 24 when he died in a gunpowder accident. The first of two husbands she would lose as a result of the war.
Betsy Ross was ex-communicated from the Quaker church and disowned by her family when she married her first husband, John Ross, who was an Episcopalian. She then joined him as a member of the influential Episcopalian Christ Church where his father was an assistant rector.
After suggesting to the secret flag committee that the flag have five-pointed stars instead of six-pointed stars, George Washington, who was then Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, sat down in Betsy's parlor and redrew the flag design in pencil incorporating her suggestions.
John and Betsy Ross apparently knew George Washington before the secret flag committee arrived at her home to ask her to make the first American flag. Betsy Ross told relatives that Washington was a frequent guest at her home for social visits as well as for having clothes tai-lored.
Betsy Ross' pew, number 12, at Chr ist Church was r ight next to George Washington's pew. People sat in their own regular pew in church at that time, so every time they were in church at the same time they would have seen one another. This may have been how they became friends.
Betsy Ross' fir st husband John had two uncles who signed the Declaration of Independence, George Ross and George Read. These close family relations may have been par t of the rea-son she was allegedly asked to make the first American flag.
The name of William Franklin, Benjamin Franklin's son appears on Betsy Ross' marriage certificate because he was the governor of New Jersey at the time she was married. Betsy Ross' relationship was cut off from her family due to marrying outside of the Quaker faith. William Franklin's rela-tionship with his father was also irrevocably cut off three years later because William remained loyal to the King and would not turn his back on England as his father did.
The early part of the Revolutionary War was rough on Betsy. Her first husband died in a gunpow-der accident and the economy plunged due to the war. Sewing jobs were very hard to come by. The secret committee that asked her to create the first American flag changed all that for her though. Con-gress allegedly ordered all the flags Betsy could make, a job which she continued in for the next 50 years! Betsy told her family that after that day she never had to look for employment again.
Betsy Ross was known for car ing for the sick and the poor . It is said that the sick would of-ten seek her out before they would go to the doctor because of her successful homemade remedies.
Betsy Ross claimed to have done tailor ing for George Washington, specifically mentioning having done work on ruffles for his shirts and on cuffs for his sleeves.

Benjamin Franklin while at the Constitution Convention 1787
"In the beginning of the contest with Britain, when we were sensi-ble of danger, we had daily prayers in this room for Divine pro-tection. Our prayers, Sir, were heard, and they were graciously answered. All of us who were engaged in the struggle must have observed frequent instances of superintending providence in our favor... Have we now forgotten that powerful friend? Or do we imagine that we no longer need his assistance? I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth - that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the Ground without his Notice, is it proba-ble that an Empire can rise without his Aid?...
I therefore beg leave to move that, henceforth, prayers imploring the assistance of Heaven and its blessing on our deliberation be held in this assembly every morning before we proceed to busi-ness."
