    1. IntroductionThefollowingguidewilldescribethecorefeaturesofBloombergandshouldproveusefulasasteppingstonetogettingstartedwiththeBloombergdatabase.

    Bloombergisaveryusefuldatabaseformanypurposes,inparticularforgatheringrealtimetimeseriesdataasBloomberg isa financialservicesystemthatprovides24hourscurrentandaccuratefinancial,economic,and

    governmentinformation,coveringallmarketsectorsworldwide.Italsofeaturesanalytics,companyfinancials,currentnewsreports,statisticsandhistoricalmarketdataapproximatelythirtyyearsback.

    The purpose of this guide is to give a basic introduction to Bloomberg, including the custom Bloombergkeyboard,thebasicprinciplesofdatasearchandhowtoextractdatausingtheExcelAdd.

    For intermediary and advanced users, no indepth documentation of Bloomberg exists due to Bloomberg

    policy,butforbeginnersthefollowingadditionalcouldprovehelpful:

    TheKeyboardlooksdifferentfromanordinaryonethemaindifferencesarethethreecolorsofthekeys

    Yellow:Theserefertospecificmarkets,e.g.commodities,equity,etc.

    Green: Theseareactionkeysandallowyoutomovethroughoutthesystem.

    Red: Thisonekeyisusedtologinandoutandresetascreen.

    3. DataSearchInBloomberganydataisidentifiesbyTickerswhichareuniquereferences.ThedatasearchinBloombergisthusmerelyaquestionoffindingtherightticker,butasthetickersonlyhavealittledegreeafsystematicsthiscanbealittletricky.

    Themostreliablewayoffindingthetickeristopresstheyellowkeyinlinewiththedatayouareinterestedin

    e.g.Equity,then.Thisresultinageneraloverviewofequityfunctions.Under1)FindingEquitiesonewillfindTKTickerLookup.EitherclickthisorpressTKthenyouwillbeaskedtoenterPartialIssuerNamewhich is simply the name of the equity in question . Now a list of different datatypes will appear,

    includinghitnumber.

    Anotherpossibilityisusingthekey.Thiscanbedoneinthreeways:

    I. YoucanmakeyourPartialIssuerNamefollowedby.Thisisalessaccuratewayofdoingtheabove,andforveryspecificsearches,thismightnotgivethewantedresult.

    II. Alternativelyyoucanstartbypressingandthensortofclickingyourwaythrough.III. Atlastitisapossibilitytopress.Bydoingthisyouwillbeputthroughtoaonline

    24hour customer support representative. This shouldonly bedone inVERYurgent situations,whichisneverduringadatasearch.

    Thelastandmostrandomsearchoptionistotypeinthee.g.companynameinthesearchbarandhopeforthe

    best.Thiswillonlyworkincaseofaverygeneraldataseries.

    4. DataExtractionThewaytoextractthedatafromBloombergwhentheTickerisknownisinExcelbytheBloombergAddin.The

    Addinisapowerfultoolthatdeliversthedatadirectlyintoaspreadsheetforcustomanalysisandcalculations.TheExcelAddinfunctionalityisavailableinExcelfromtheBloombergmenuitemonthetopmenubar.

    IfyoudonotseetheBloomberginthetopmenubarinExcel,installitbythefollowingsteps:

    1. ClickStart>AllPrograms>Bloomberg>InstallExcelAddin.2. InthepopupwindowclickInstall.3. ReopenExcel.ThentheBloombergtabshouldappearinthetopmenu.

    The Wizards in the Bloomberg menu provide a guided process to draw data from Bloomberg into aspreadsheet.ThemostcommonlyusedareImportDataandFundamentalsAnanlysis.

    ImportDataWizardo Thisenablesyoutoretrieveanynumberofindividualseries.Ifyouclicktheiconinthetoolbar

    youarepresentedwiththefouroptionsofdatatypes

    o WhenthewizardasksforasearchtexttheningeneraloneshouldsearchforPX_LAST,whichwillmostoftengivethecorrectvalueofanyseriesevenifitisnotactuallyaprice.

    o It isalwaysagood idea tovalidate thedatabyusingHP (HistoricalPrices) in theBloombergprogram.

    FundamentalsAnalysisWizardo Thiswizardenablesyou to retrieveBloomberg fundamentalsanalysispredefined templates,

    suchasBalanceSheets,CashFlowsetc.

    Note:Thefirstdatacell inthespreadsheetwillcontainacommandfunction,whichwilldefinetherequestedseries.Ifthiscommandischangedorupdatesthenthedatawillupdateaccordingly.

    5. ExamplesInthissectiontwoexampleswillhopefullyproveusefulingettingstartedwithgettingbasicdata.FirstwewilltakealookatthedailydataontheS&P500indexandthereafteratquarterlydataontheUnitedStatesGDPgrowth.
