•A superstition is excessively credulous belief in and reverence for supernatural beings.

There are several theories here as well, but all of them suggest that the story has been told for so long that it has become an amalgam of several. The most popular theory is that Mary is Mary Worth a made up witch from the Salem witch trials who was wrongly accused of murdering children, who was then burned at the stake and is now coming back to seek revenge. This name has been mixed up with Mary I, or Mary Tudor, Queen of England who was a murderous ruler, plagued with a series of miscarriages which is why one sometimes plays the game with the line "Bloody Mary I stole your baby." Oddly, if you believed this was potentially true, would be a pretty antagonistic thing to say. Colleen & Victoria: We both have the same opinion. We

don’t fully defend, but we don’t fully refute the idea of Bloody Mary. We naturally don’t want to try it out just in case it is real. Bloody Mary is something that we don’t necessarily believe in because we don’t believe in ghosts.

Bloody Mary is always something that we think about trying but we never actually have. Maybe someday when we get older and we fully refute it, we will try it out. We will let you know what happens…if we get the chance…

Graveyard Superstition

This superstition is based on an old wise tale. It states that if you don't hold your breath and put your feet up while you passing a graveyard/cemetery that you may breathe in the soul of that certain deceased person. Even though other's that say that it's in respect to the dead since they are no longer alive.

What is a Superstition?

Superstition: a belief or notion, not based on reason or knowledge, in or of the ominous significance of a particular thing, circumstance, occurrence, proceeding or the like.

Origin of SuperstitionNo one really knows for sure who created

this superstition, but some think it could date all the way back Adam and Eve. People think that because God breathed life into Adam. Other people think that this superstition has something to do with Indo-European languages because the word for “soul” is derived from the word breath.

Defend or Refute?Juliana: I refute this superstition, in other

words I don’t believe in this superstition. I do not believe because I’ve had past experience; I went past a cemetery and I didn’t hold my breath, so I should have breathed in the soul of a deceased person, but I did not.Sophia: I defend and refute this

superstition. When I go passed a cemetery I normally hold my breath and lift my feet up, but sometimes I don’t. I know that it is probably not real because I’ve passed several cemeteries and not held my breath but I’m still alive.

• A belief in a supernatural occurrence that is unexplainable.

• Some examples are Friday The 13th and Ghosts.

• Commonly applied to luck and prophecy.

• Also known as devil’s triangle. • In the western north Atlantic Ocean• More aircraft and surface boats disappear

here than on any place in the world• The earliest recorded disappearance

happened on September 16 in 1950

Michael: Refute I think there is nothing

going on that is out of the ordinary. The volume of ships and planes that go through. The Bermuda triangle is one of the two areas of the world that magnetic and true north meet messing up instruments.

Kyle: Refute I believe that nothing

supernatural is going on in the Bermuda Triangle. So many ships and planes travels across the triangle that some ships must go missing. There are also many whirl pools

and other oceanic movements.

• The U.S.S. Cyclops was launched on May 7, 1910.

• It was commissioned on May 1, 1917 because America entered World War One.

• It was transporting heavy loads and had catastrophic failure.

• Most people have the theory that this navy ship disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle.

DEFEND…

OR REFUTE?

“I defend because I have broken a mirror before. One day I had a soccer tournament and we lost because I had broken a mirror a day before the tournament. Also, one day at school a kid spilled his chocolate milk all over my shirt.”

Zara

“I refute because I have broken a lot of mirrors before and I have never had bad luck.”

If you do not blow out all of the candles on your birthday cake with the first breath you will get horrible luck untill your next birthday.

Even today people still hold this superstition if you do not blow out all your candles in one breath you will have bad luck for the coming year. A Person celebrating his or her birthday makes a silent wish while blowing out the candles on the cake. It is said if the person is able to blow out all candles in one breath it signifies that the wish would be answered and if you do not you will have horrible luck. that the person would enjoy bad luck in the coming year.

Evan: I agree, because I never blow out all the candles on my birthday cake in one blow all the time I get bad luck. I wished for an I-pad and I did not blow out all the candles in one blow and i did not get it. What I did get was bad luck. Michael: I disagree, because every year I blow out all of my candles in one blow and never get my wish. One time I wished for a new phone when I blew out all my candles in one blow and didn’t get it.

SuperstitionsSuperstitions

When a dog howls death is near.

Definition

Superstition is a belief in an event that causes another bad event of which there is no way of linking the two events.

Origin

the origin of the superstition is traced back to Egypt, where the dog-faced gods were objects

of worship. Sirius, the Dog-star, appeared before the rising of the Nile. this gave the

people a supernatural warning to prepare for the overflow of the Nile.

OPINIONS

PATRICK: I believe that this is true because in my fathers dreams when a dog howls one of his close friends is going to die soon.

SEAN: I believe that this is true because my father’s, grandfather’s, uncle died in Oklahoma after his neighbors dog was going through a crises and started howling.

Happy Halloween

Superstition

Origin

In some countries such as Spain, knock on wood

after an event occurs that might bring bad

luck.

Defend Or Disagree

Defend

• Caroline and Zoë agree to this

because we have experienced a position where we have to use

this superstition and it has worked

for us at that time

Disagree

• Emily disagrees because when we tried to use

this superstition it didn’t work at the time when

we timed to use it

RelationEmily-I related to this in the

hallways, when I said “I hope I don’t trip” but after I “Knocked on wood”

I tripped.

Caroline- I related to this superstition when I get a bloody

nose. Now whenever I had a bloody nose and I knocked on wood, I

haven’t gotten bloody noses ever since then.

Zoë- I related to this when I was in the car an I said “ I hope we don’t

crash” and knocked on wood. After that we didn’t crash n we were safe
