Main blood vessels
Arteries
Capillaries
Veins
Arteries - the walls are smooth which contract &
relax . - transport blood away from heart . - transport oxygenated blood from
arteries to capillaries . ( arterioles )
Capillaries
- tiny blood vessels .
- supplied with blood by arterioles .
- 1 cell thick .
exchanges material between capillary & surrounding tissue .
- supply tissues & to remove waste .
- exchange of oxygen , carbon dioxide , water & salts .
Veins - consists of 3 layers of tissues . - include valves which helps the return of
blood to the heart by which prevents blood from flowing in the opposite direction .
- transport blood towards the heart . - transport deoxygenated blood .
Transport nutritionTransport respiratory gasesTransport hormones and enzymes from their
place of originBlood clotting-prevent loss of blood cells and body fluidDefend the body against the invasion of micro-
organismsRemove all waste product from tissues and cells
Plasma Red blood cells White blood cells Platelets Immunoglobulins
Plasma - carries dissolved substances & transports them to the
organs & tissues in the body . dissolve substance ; glucose ; digestion ; hormones ; vitamins ; urea ; carbon dioxide
Red Blood Cells - replace heavy blood loss . - transport oxygen to the heart . White Blood Cells - fights infection & part of the body’s defense
system . - part of immune system .
Platelets - stop blood from gushing / flowing out of the
injured area .
Immunoglobulin - protective antibodies , generated by white
blood cells . form when someone is recovering /
received some immunization . protect someone against future attack of
the infection - Specific immunoglobulin has special
selected antibodies to treat a specific infection .
