Blood is made up of 4

components.

Red Blood Cell

White Blood Cell

Platelets

Plasma

PLASMA• The liquid portion

of the blood• Mostly made up of

water• It carries:

– nutrients – chemical

messengers– wastes

Red Blood Cells (RBC)• Takes up O2 &

delivers it to cells.• No nucleus• Round donut, with

no hole

• Hemoglobin:- Found in the RBC.– An iron containing

protein that binds chemically to O2.

White Blood Cells (WBC)

• Fights diseasesGet rid of bad bacteria, viruses and other invaders

• How are they different from RBC?– There are fewer of

them.(1:1000)– They are bigger– They have nuclei– Most live for months

or even years.

Platelets • They are pieces of

cells fragments.• Help form blood

clots.– Fibrin (a protein)

weaves a net of tiny fibers across a cut, which traps blood cells & platelets that form a clot.

Blood Transfusion

• The transfer of blood from one person to another when clotting isn’t working and a person is losing too much blood.

BLOOD TYPE “A”• Has “A” antigens

• Can donate to “A” and “AB”

Rh Factor (13)

• Another protein found on RBC.• Rh+ you have the Rh

marker(s)• Rh- no Rh marker

Lymphatic System (18-20)

• A network of vein like vessels that returns fluids to the bloodstream.

• Lymph: fluid inside the lymphatic system.

• Lymph nodes filter lymph trapping bacteria & other micro organisms that cause diseases.
