2. Red blood cells are the mostcommon type of blood cells whichtake up oxygen in the lungs. They lack of a cell nucleus The cytoplasm is rich in haemoglobin(an iron-containingbiomolecule)that can bind oxygenand is responsible for the bloodsred colour 3. White bloodcells(leukocytes) are ofthe immune systeminvolved in defending thebody against bothinfectious disease andforeign materials. They live for about threeto four days in theaverage human body. 4. Platelets are small, irregularly shaped clearcell fragments (cells that do not have anucleus containing DNA) The average lifespan of a platelet is normallyjust 5 to 9 days. If the number of platelets is too low, excessive bleeding can occur. However, if the number of platelets is toohigh, blood clots can form thrombosis(theformation of a blood inside a blood vessel),which may obstruct blood vessels and resultin such events as a stroke. 5. Plasma is the straw-colored or pale-yellow liquidcomponent of blood normally holds the blood cells in whole blood insuspension. It makes up about 55% of total blood volume. It is mostly water (93% by volume) and contains dissolvedproteins(Major proteins are fibrinogens, globulins andalbumins) 6. Thereare three major types of blood vessels: 1) arteries 2)Capillaries 3)veins 7. Artery are blood vessels that carry bloodaway from the heart. This blood is normally oxygenated, exceptions made for the pulmonary andumbilical arteries 8. Capillaries are the smallest of a bodys bloodvessels Capillaries do not function on their own 9. Inthe circulatory system, veins (from theLatin vena) are blood vessels that carry bloodtowards the heart. Most veins carry deoxygenated blood fromthe tissues back to the heart. 10. Sources:,
