ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOOS NESTNURSE RATCHEDR. P. MCMURPHY

>>0 >>1 >> 2 >> 3 >> 4 >>5Though not mentally ill, McMurphy hopes to spend the rest of his prison sentence in a relaxed environment. Nurse Ratched a former army nurse rules her ward with an iron hand. She controls her patients through a psychologically manipulative program aimed at emasculating and destroying their self esteem.

MEDIA

Written in 1959 the movie was released in 1975. Set in an Oregon psychiatric hospital R.P. McMurphy (Nicholson) was transferred from a prison work farm to the hospital, thinking it would be an easier way to serve out his time. What ensues is a battle between Nurse Ratched and McMurphy which in the end turns violent. Nurse Ratched is a tyrannical leader who uses oppression, fear and emasculation (all male patients) with little medical intervention. Nurse Ratched often uses the group therapy sessions to point out the flaws of the members to pit them against each other. McMurphy calls her out on this which escalates the conflict between Ratched and McMurphy. This allows McMurphy to become someone the group looks up to. I do not want to give away the ending. This is a must see movie in my opinion.

BIOMEDICAL THERAPIESELECTROCONVULSIVE THERAPY Electric shock is used to produce a cortical seizure accompanied by convulsions.

VALIDITY: The movie depicts ECT as a form of torture and punishment, but in reality it can be a useful tool in treating severe depression.

This movie has some very funny parts in it, but it also has some serious and heart-wrenching truths. Most of the characters depicted their roles as psychological misfits really well. Taking these disorders to an extreme is what I liked most about this movie. Jack Nicholson portrays McMurphy as the rebellious rule breaker in a believable role.

Several scenes are straight out of Hollywood, but that is part of the entertainment factor. Overall being in a mental institution draws a fine line between normal and crazy. MY TAKE
