Blessed Lord, accept this burning candle as a sign of my faith and love for You.

Like this candle, I am ready to be used in your service without asking why and to what purpose.

Even as this candle, I wish to stand in Your presence and to be consumed in the light and warmth of our Love.

Please hear my prayer and, if it is Your will, grant my petition.

But above all, make me loyal and faithful to You in all circumstances of my life.

Amen.

Sunday August 9th is the 75th Anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Let us pray with the words that Pope St. John Paul II shared at the Peace Memorial in Hiroshima on February 25, 1981. To the Creator of nature and man, of truth and beauty

I pray: Hear my voice, for it is the voice of the victims of all wars and violence among individuals and nations;

Hear my voice, for it is the voice of all children who suffer and will suffer when people put their faith in weapons and war;

Hear my voice when I beg you to instill into the hearts of all human beings the wisdom of peace, the strength of justice and the joy of fellowship;

Hear my voice, for I speak for the multitudes in eve-ry country and in every period of history who do not want war and are ready to walk the road of peace;

Hear my voice and grant insight and strength so that we may always respond to hatred with love, to injus-tice with total dedication to justice, to need with the sharing of self, to war with peace.

O God, hear my voice and grant unto the world your everlasting peace.

After the miracle of Jesus walking on water, the disciples exclaimed, “Truly, you are the Son of God.” Most Christians will probably never experience such a dramatic miracle.

Like Elijah, we await the manifestation of God in oth-er moments. Maybe the biggest challenge for the be-liever is to be constantly attuned to the possible pres-ence of God in the everyday events of life. This may take some people years to develop. Some seem to find the Lord easily in the simple things. Try and look for the presence of God in the little things around us. Maybe, like Elijah, we will be surprised at what we find. And, like the disciples, we can add our voice to the confession, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

Nature has perfections in order to show that she is the image of God,

and defects to show that she is only God’s image.

DEACON TIM’S BOOK & MOVIE REVIEW

A doctor phoned his patient one afternoon and told him: “I have some bad news and some worse news. The bad news is that all your tests show you only have 24 hours to live.” The patient said: “What could be worse than that?” The doc answered: “I’ve been trying to

reach you since yesterday.” Fear is something that comes to us all. It can be a healthy thing when it motivates us to protect ourselves from some threat to our wellbeing or threat to those we love. We are seeing that with the current pandemic we are caught in. It motivates us to do those things to pro-tect ourselves and our families from the virus, like mask wearing and washing our hands. Today we hear a story of Peter and one of his experiences with fear. Peter often acted impulsively without thinking things through. It often ended in failure or grief. Jesus always asked that a man should look closely at a situation before he acted. Many of our fail-ures come when we, like Peter, act in an emotional mo-ment without counting the cost. It has been said a saint is not a person who never fails; a saint is a person who gets up and goes on again every time they fall. Peter’s failures only made him love Jesus more. Peter always knew who to reach out to when his failures came. As his faith failed him and he began to sink in the waters, he reached out to Jesus to save him. If we learn nothing else from Peter, know that our salvation lies in Jesus. We only need to reach out to him.

DEACON MIKE’S CORNER

Page Six August 9th, 2020

With all of the upheaval in the world today, I'm pleased to bring you this review of the excellent DVD "USS Indianapolis: The

Legacy". In July of 1945, the USS Indianapolis (CA-35) just completed a secret mission that directly con-tributed to the end of World War II. They completed their successful high-speed run to deliver the compo-nents of the atomic bomb to Tinan. When they were in route from Guam to Leyte, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed and sunk by a Japanese submarine within the first hour of July 30th. The ship sank within twelve minutes and the men that did not die in the explosions or sinking spent the next five days floating in the ocean until they were rescued. Of the nearly 1,200 on board, only 325 survived. As some of you know, one of my favorite movies is Jaws, and my favorite scene from Jaws is the one where Cap-tain Quint tells of how he barely survived the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. This DVD and the story of the USS Indianapolis is told entirely through interviews with the surviving crew members, their families, their rescuers, and even the family of the captain of the Japanese sub that torpedoed the USS Indianapolis. One of the more remarkable things about this DVD is how many of these men spoke about their Faith in Jesus and how much they prayed during their five days at sea. As one of the men said in his interview "Think about how your hands look when you wash your car for 30 minutes. Now think about how your skin would look if you were floating in the ocean for five days." I proudly give this DVD Five Beards out of Five Beards because of the creative way that their amazing story is told entirely through interviews. The various interviews are woven together seamlessly to tell their story. The Faith of the crewmen, what they endured, and their love of our country is something that we need to be remind-ed of today more than ever. That is why they are called The Greatest Generation.
