BAPTISM: Parents who wish to have their child/
children baptized should contact the Parish Office for
arrangements. A preparatory session is mandatory
for the proper formation of parents and godparents.
MARRIAGE: Those wishing to enter a sacramental
marriage should contact the Parish Office at least six
months prior to the intended date.
VISITING THE SICK: Please inform the Parish
Office should a relative/friend who is homebound/
hospitalized need a pastoral visit or the Sacrament of
Anointing. A priest will attend to the Sacrament and,
as needed, will arrange for Holy Communion to be
brought to your loved one.
FIRST HOLY COMMUNION & CONFIRMATION:
Preparations for the reception of these Sacraments
are taken care of by the Office of Faith Formation.

A weekly TELEVISED SUNDAY MASS has
begun airing on WCBD, Channel 2. The Mass will
be broadcast both at 5:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
every Sunday. When you or someone you know is
unable to get to church due to sickness or physical
impairment, the TV Mass offers spiritual comfort
and inspiration.

COUNSELING SERVICES provides psychological
services to adolescents, couples and adults. For

BLESSED SACRAMENT CATHOLIC SCHOOL CORNER
HALLOWEEN, ALL SAINTS, ALL SOULS ….
HALLOWEEN (which means ALL HALLOWS EVE, ALL SAINTS EVE) is the vigil of the Christian
observance of All Saints. In its early years of remembering, it was customary that children
would ‘dress up’ like saints to signify that living a good life is the goal of every Christian from
childhood on. Tell the children this reason. The social mores of today, trick or treat!,
has evolved differently. There are no tricks to living a saintly life. Jesus has told us
how this should happen.
In the history of the Christian Calendar, the two special days following Halloween are
significant because they flow from our theology of discipleship … followers of Jesus Christ, Lord
and Savior.
In its simplest form, ALL SAINTS is observed in memory of those who lived holy lives here on
earth and are looked upon as examples and models of good Christian living. Thus, in following
their good example one can prepare for the Beatific Vision (seeing God face to face) in the next
life. The theology therefore dictates the life of Christians. Jesus Christ, Son of God, is the
exemplar; following Him will lead to the eternal Kingdom (heaven) when this material world
comes to an end. The description of this world as transitory, temporal, passing, is in direct
contrast to that of the next world as eternal, permanent, forever. All of this is related to the
theology of the Death, Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus Christ: the souls of the just will rise
from the dead in a new and glorified body, not bound by time and space. This is the Christian
faith.
The observance of the Feast of ALL SOULS is the remembrance of those who transition from
this world to the next awaiting (preparing) the glory of heaven. Human frailty and its resulting
‘imperfect’ life need a purification which purges (Purgatory) the souls of the deceased so as to
free them of the temporal imperfections that impede entrance into eternal life, the Kingdom.
The ancient practices of remembering the dead pre-dates the Christian observance. From ages
before, humans have retained this close tie to those who have died. This remembrance is
christianized with the advent of Jesus into the world of time and space. He is the pivotal image
of how one is to live here and how one will live in the hereafter. The Old Testament Book of
Maccabees (Chapter 2.42-46) tells us that ‘it is a holy and wholesome practice to pray for dead
that their souls will be cleansed for the afterlife’.
Various rituals and practices around the world reflect the above beliefs. Visits to a cemetery, at
any time but more particularly on All Souls’ Day, reflect this remembrance in the hope of a new
and resurrected life. In many parts of the world the observance of this day brings people to
burial grounds as the venue for collective remembrance. Stories are exchanged, food is shared,
burial space are cleansed of debris, prayers are offered – all for the eventual salvation of the
dead.
(Since I am not in the hometown my friends visit the gravesites of my parents and older sister,
lights candles and pray for the repose of their souls. I am told that they are also remembered
for the good they have done during their earthly lives and express the hope that they would,
someday, enter the Kingdom of God).
The celebration of the Eucharist (Holy Mass) is the highest form of all offerings so the dead are
specifically remembered at the Altar. All such offerings for the repose of the souls of the faithful
departed are placed on/near the Altar of Sacrifice and specific/general remembrances are made
on their behalf. You have this opportunity when filing out the names of the deceased on the ALL
SOULS DAY envelopes.
Remembering the Old Testament Book of Maccabees, it is a wholesome practice. I do what you
do – I remember my loved ones when I celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. (According to
an old Irish family tradition in some parts of the old Emerald Isle, at the time of death, the
mother’s wedding band is given to the oldest living son (I am the only living son!) and the
father’s wedding band is given to the oldest living daughter. My mama’s wedding band is
affixed to the chalice that I use at the Altar. Mother was the Hibernian in our family!).

estimada para hacer los arreglos. La quinceañera

inscrita en su preparación.
BAUTISMO: Los padres que deseen bautizar
a sus hijos deben contactar la Oficina
Parroquial para hacer los arreglos. Una
sesión preparatoria es obligatoria para los
padres y padrinos.
MATRIMONIO: Aquellos con deseos de
entrar al Sacramento del Matrimonio deben
contactar la Oficina Parroquial al menos seis
meses previos a la fecha deseada.
VISITA A LOS ENFERMOS: Por favor

o amigo que está confinado en casa u
hospitalizado necesita una visita pastoral o el
Sacramento de la Unción. Un sacerdote

CONFIRMACIÓN: La preparación para la

frecuentemente. Debemos. La Fe nos dice que todo
viene de las Manos de un Padre amoroso… sí todo…
aún nuestras posesiones materiales. Cuando
cooperamos con el plan de Dios para cada uno de
nosotros, podemos usar nuestros dones y talentos
dados por Dios para ser creativos, para tener
trabajos que concuerden con nuestras habilidades,
etc. Dios nos da TODO.�
Ser un administrador es ser un cuidador (recuerde
que no somos dueños; ¡Dios es el dueño máximo!).
A un cuidador se le confía los bienes y propiedades
de alguien más, y habrá un cálculo de la confianza
depositada en cada uno de nosotros. Solo una
mente que comprende esto puede activar su
corazón para responder en/con gratitud. ¿Cómo
logramos esto? Respondemos. Damos de vuelta a
Dios una porción del tiempo que Él nos ha dado;
damos de vuelta a Dios una porción del talento que
el nos ha dado; damos de vuelta a Dios una porción
del tesoro que el nos ha dado. Y cuando hacemos

HALLOWEEN, TODOS LOS SANTOS, TODOS LOS DIFUNTOS ….
La NOCHE DE BRUJAS (HALLOWEEN que significa ALL HALLOWS EVE: Noche de Todos los
Santos) es la vigilia de la celebración cristiana de Todos los Santos. En sus primeros años de
conmemoración, se acostumbraba que los niños se vistieran como santos para expresar que
vivir una buena vida es la meta de todo cristiano desde la infancia. Díganles a los niños esta
idea. Las costumbres sociales de hoy en día, truco o dulce (trick or treat), han evolu-
cionado de manera diferente. No hay trucos para vivir una vida santa. Jesús nos ha
dicho como esto debe suceder.
En la historia del calendario Cristiano, los dos días especiales que le siguen a Halloween son
significativos porque fluyen de nuestra teología del discipulado… seguidores de Jesucristo, Se-
ñor y Salvador.
En su forma más simple, el día de TODOS LOS SANTOS se observa en memoria de aquellos
que vivieron vidas santas aquí en la tierra y los vemos como ejemplos y modelos de una vida
cristiana buena. Así, siguiendo su buen ejemplo uno se puede preparar para la Visión Beatífica
(ver a Dios cara a cara) en la próxima vida. La teología, por consiguiente, dicta la vida de los
cristianos. Jesucristo, el Hijo de Dios, es el ejemplo; seguirlo a Él nos llevará al Reino eterno
(cielo) cuando este mundo material llegué a su fin. La descripción de este mundo como transi-
torio y temporal, está en contraste directo con ese del próximo mundo que es eterno, perma-
nente, para siempre. Todo esto está relacionado con la teología de la Muerte, la Resurrección y

y glorificado, no limitado por el tiempo o el espacio. Esta es la fe cristiana.
Las prácticas antiguas de la conmemoración de los muertos anteceden a la celebración cristia-
na. Desde años atrás, los humanos han mantenido esta unión cercana con aquellos que han
muerto. Esta memoria es cristianizada con el adviento de Jesús al mundo del tiempo y del es-
pacio. Él es la imagen fundamental de como uno debe vivir aquí y como uno debe vivir en el
más allá. El Libro de los Macabeos del Antiguo Testamento (2Mac 12,42-46) nos dice que «es
piadosa y santa» la idea de rezar por los muertos para que sus almas sean limpiadas para la
resurrección.
Varios rituales y prácticas alrededor del mundo reflejan esta creencia. Las visitas al cementerio,
en cualquier momento, pero particularmente más en el Día de Todos los Fieles Difuntos (Día de
los Muertos), reflejan este recuerdo en la esperanza de una vida nueva y resucitada. En mu-
chas partes del mundo la celebración de este día atrae a la gente a los terrenos de un cemente-
rio como el lugar para la conmemoración colectiva. Se intercambian historias, se comparte comida,
el lugar de la sepultura se limpia, se ofrecen oraciones – todo por la salvación eventual del di-
funto.
(Dado que no estoy en mi pueblo, mis amigos visitan las tumbas de mis padres y de mi herma-
na mayor, prenden velas y rezan por el descanso de sus almas. Me han dicho que también son
recordados por el bien que habían hecho durante sus vidas terrenales y expresan la esperanza
de que ellos, algún día, entren al Reino de Dios).
La celebración de la Eucaristía (la Santa Misa) es la máxima expresión de todas las ofrendas
para que los muertos sean recordados específicamente en el Altar. Todas las ofrendas por el
descanso de las almas de los fieles que han partido son colocadas sobre o cerca del Altar del
Sacrificio y se hace memoria en nombre de ellos. Ustedes tienen esta oportunidad cuando ano-
tan los nombres de los fallecidos en los sobres del Día de Todos los Fieles Difuntos.
Recordando el Libro de Macabeos del Antiguo Testamento es una práctica sana. Yo hago lo que
ustedes hacen – recuerdo mis seres queridos cuando celebro el Santo Sacrificio de la Misa.
(Según una antigua tradición familiar de Irlanda en algunas partes de la vieja Isla de Esmeral-
da, a la hora de la muerte, el anillo de matrimonio de la madre es dada al hijo vivo mayor (¡yo
soy único hijo!) y el anillo de matrimonio del padre se da a la hija viva mayor. El anillo de mi
mamá está incrustado en el cáliz que uso en el Altar. ¡Mi madre era la Siberiana de nuestra fa-
milia!).
