I’m only going to add one memory, and that is of an evening prayer service. September 11 was a Tuesday, and that evening I held a quickly-planned special evening Mass in our church at St. Peter’s, Mansfield. We had placed a short notice on local radio stations to let people know of the time. The large church was filled! What amazed me most was to see young families, often with little children, coming into church. There was fear in people’s hearts; so much was unknown at the time. Those who came knew that they had to look beyond themselves in order to cope with the level of horror that we had experienced that day. Ten years later I am still drawn to prayer when I think about that day of violence. Only with prayer can we continue to be our best selves and work against hatred, violence and such blatant evil that was visible on that day. Certainly, we as a nation need to protect ourselves. But we also need to work with others to overcome all that sets people off against each other. If we learn any single lesson from what happened ten years ago, maybe it should be to direct more and more of our daily energy towards finding ways to live with others of differing values and outlooks on life. No, we cannot always reach the fanatics of any religion or culture. But we have to try to build bridges where we can. Retaliation may do many things, but it never creates a more peaceful environment. MASSES THIS WEEK There will not be the usual 9:00 a.m. Mass on Tuesday and Wednesday (Sept 13-14) of this week. The full Mass schedule will resume next week. ________________________________________________________________ WELCOME TO OUR PARISH FAMILY THE NEWLY BAPTIZED Mario James, son of Mark and Amy Carek. May the Lord bless him and guide him through his spiritual path. _____________________________________________

TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

GENERATIONS OF FAITH Our next sessions will be on Sept. 25, when

we will begin our three-part series on the changes in the Roman Missal. This first session will be called Praying as a Community: Our call to Worship. If you would like to attend GOF, please register online or by using a paper registration form. GOF is open to parishioners of all ages.

CONFIRMATION PARENT MEETING Parents of Confirmation students are reminded that there will be a parent and student meeting at 7:00 p.m., Monday, Sept. 12, in Roncalli Hall. Our first Confirmation meeting with candidates and sponsors will be at 6:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 19.

NEW PARENT RETREAT Parents who are seeking Baptism for their children are invited to attend our next New Parent Retreat, at 1:30 p.m., Oct. 2. It begins with a meal and will conclude around 4:00 p.m. Babysitting will be provided for siblings. If this is your first child being baptized at Blessed John, please register using the registration form in the magazine rack. Please contact Marla for more information.

NEW PARENT RETREAT TEAM There will be a meeting of the New Parent Retreat Team to evaluate our retreat and plan for our quarterly retreats at 7:00 p.m., Wed, Sept 14 in the Atrium. If you are interested in welcoming new parents to our parish and preparing them for their role as Christian parents, please join us. For more information contact Marla.

MINISTRY SCHEDULER It is time to put in your changes for the fall ministry schedule. All you need to do is log on and list the dates you are unavailable to minister. There is a great tutorial on the scheduler, so be sure to watch it. If you do not have internet access, just call Marla and let her know your availability. The fall schedule will go into effect the weekend of Sept 24-25, and will run until December 18, 2011. Please plan to have your changes made by September 11. We will run the scheduler this week!

RCIA CONTINUES THIS WEEK! We started our RCIA process last week, but it is not too late for new persons to join us. If you think you would like to be part of a faith journey of discovery that opens up some of the mysteries of the Catholic Church, please contact Fr. Herb this week. Maybe Catholicism is for you. You’ll never know without investigating.

SACRIFICIAL COMMITMENT Our Sunday offering last weekend was $9,890. Thank you very much. For many, the beginning of the school year also means a review of budgeting and financial planning. In what ways does your commitment to your parish fit in your over-all financial picture?

WELCOME It’s always interesting to discover the starting point of those who come to visit us. Although many may be local residents who are coming here for the first time, we often meet visitors from across the country and even from other countries. Two weeks ago we met a couple from South America. Each parish has its own personality and some stylistic differences. At the same time, there is a universality to our faith that allows people to step in and become part of the faith community regardless of place. So whether you are from San Diego or Sault Ste Marie, Rochester or Little Rock, we are very pleased to have you with us. And if you are from closer by and are looking for a church to make your own, please check us out.

INSTALLING PASTOR This morning (Sept 11) Fr. Herb, as the new dean of this deanery, will be installing Fr. Jim Brown as the new pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH), Toledo. Because that Mass is at 11:00 a.m., Fr. Tom will preside at both the 9:45 and 11:30 Masses here. You may be wondering what a dean does. The actual title is Vicar Forane and means that the dean is the bishop’s representative to the outlying area. Our diocese has fifteen deaneries or geographical sections, each bearing a saint’s name. This deanery’s name is St. Katherine Drexel and includes eight parishes: St. Aloysius and St. Thomas More, Bowling Green; St. Rose and Blessed John, Perrysburg; All Saints, Rossford; St. Joan of Arc, St. Patrick of Heatherdowns, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Toledo. Besides installing new pastors, the dean runs deanery meetings, reviews sacramental records at all local parishes, meets with the bishop and other deans on a regular basis, and is the first line of response if a parish has special needs (like the illness of a pastor). Fr. Herb was named the local dean in July.

CATHOLIC ADULTS WHO WANT TO BE CONFIRMED If you are an adult who has not been confirmed in the Catholic Church, please contact Fr. Herb to discuss how to prepare for this sacrament during this year.

PASTORAL COUNCIL NOMINATIONS Our Blessed John XXIII Pastoral Council is made up of twelve parishioners who gather to pray, examine the needs of the parish, and review how our parish is living up to its mission. Each year we have a turn-over of about one third of the membership. Today there are nomination forms available for you to suggest anyone who might be interested in being part of this team. You may also nominate yourself. All those nominated will be invited to the September meeting (Sept 22). At that time, we will explain how the council works, and then those interested ‘discern’ if they should be on the council. This is very much a group of people who are thinkers and dreamers, asking what the parish is doing right and what more it can do. This past year the council headed up a five-year plan, which is also going to be unveiled to all this fall. Please start prayerfully thinking about those you would like to nominate.

YOUNG ADULT (21-35) CANOE TRIP If you are between 21 and 35, you are invited to join us on a Canoe Outing on Saturday, September 17. Please contact Mark at [email protected].

Upcoming events include a bonfire (Oct 1); God and Nature “Back to Earth” Twi-Night Retreat (Oct 9); and Friday night Small Faith Group (beginning Oct 14). For more information or to sign up, please contact Veronica ([email protected]) or Fr. Herb ([email protected]).

SIGN LANGUAGE Sign up for a course in Sign Language (multi-level), Sept 8 - Oct 20, at St. Pius Parish, Toledo. Contact Jean at (244-6711) or [email protected].

ICE CREAM AFTER 11:30 MASS The K of C will have an Ice Cream social, open to all, after the 11:30 Mass next Sunday.

SYMPATHY We extend prayers and sympathy to Matthew Garrity and family at the loss of his sister, Elizabeth Sumner. May God’s love bring you consolation.

SMALL FAITH COMMUNITIES (GROUPS) Small faith groups meet for two six-week seasons each year, one in the fall and one during Lent.

Forms for registration will be available next Sunday.

Many blessings come from these groups. You will get to know each other better and experience a sense of belonging to Blessed John XXIII Parish. As you reflect and share on the readings, the Sunday Mass celebration is enhanced and the Gospel message becomes a lived expression of faith.
