“Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth;

you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the kingdom.” Cf. Mt 11:25

Dear Parishioners,

In our parishes, when the Pastor has the assistance of Parochial

Vicars, the Vicars share in the ministries with particular duties and

responsibilities. In the priest assignments this past June, Father Louis

Kolenkiewicz was assigned to the Cathedral Parish as a second Parochial

Vicar with service to the Convent of Divine Love (the Pink Sisters) on

Green Street in Philadelphia. In addition to his liturgical and sacramental

duties, Father Kolenkiewicz will assist in the area’s medical and nursing

facilities, and work directly with the Legion of Mary, the Parish

Charismatic Prayer Group, and the League of the Sacred Heart. He will

also coordinate the ministry of Holy Communion to the sick and the

homebound.

Another very significant part of Father Kolenkiewicz’s ministry will

be the oversight of our Parish Outreach Ministries. These include Aid for

Friends, the Saint Vincent de Paul Society and Saint John’s Hospice.

I have asked Father to describe below his plan for the promotion of these

ministries in the Cathedral Parish:

“Dear Friends in Christ, One sign of an active parish life, indeed an active Christian life, is an

ongoing charity toward those in need. Our parish has a proud history of

such service. On the second Sunday of each month we collect nonperishable foods for Saint John hospice. Perhaps in preparation for

that Sunday, each month we could each add a few items to our ordinary shopping list and prepare a small package to be dropped off at the

sacristy for that purpose. This donation enables the hospice to maintain

an adequate supply of foods needed for their daily work.

Another great opportunity is to participate in Aid for

Friends. Everyone is encouraged to take home the packages that are supplied to us, place meals inside, and then return them to the freezer in

Chapel Hall. The packages can be found near the freezer. These meals

are for those in need, particularly the elderly and the homebound who find it difficult to food shop or prepare cooked meals for themselves. This

is a wonderful opportunity for us to help those in need. Participation in this program really does not demand much from us since we are already

preparing meals for our own families. This also helps us to cut down on

waste in our own homes by sharing our surplus with the needy.

Our parish also participates each year in the Saint Vincent de Paul

Society Clothing Drive. The parish provides a green drop box for clean, usable clothing items which are re-purposed by the Saint Vincent de Paul

Society for those in need.

I invite everyone to heed the frequent reminders in our Sunday

bulletin to support these most worthy acts of charity. In doing so, we are hearing and heeding the words of Christ our Savior who cries out to us

through the poor: “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and

you gave me drink, I was naked and you clothed me...whatever you do to the least of my brothers and sisters you do to me."

Sincerely in Our Lord,

Father Dennis Gill &

Father Louis J. Kolenkiewicz

AID FOR FRIENDS AT THE CATHEDRAL PARISH

Aid For Friends is a non-profit organization

that seeks volunteers to prepare meals in their

homes and/or to deliver food for those unable to prepare

their own meals. These prepared meals are a tremendous

service to the elderly and disabled who cannot afford their

meals or have difficulty getting to the food store.

Please consider helping Aid for Friends by picking up

the meal trays in Chapel Hall on Sunday mornings during

the Mass times, from 8:00 AM to 1:30 PM. These trays are

located next to the Aid For Friends freezer with further in-

structions in Chapel Hall. Please return prepared meals any

weekday between 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM or Sunday morn-

ings during the Mass times.

If you are interested in taking meals to the homebound,

especially in the Cathedral Parish area, please contact

Mrs. Lynn Trumbetta, by phone (215-464-2224) or email

Friends to deliver meals. Aid for Friends encourages a visit

No ob-

ponemos a nuestra belleza interior? ¿A quiénes queremos

impresionar? ¿A nosotros mismos?

The Bishops of Pennsylvania voted to

approve a recommendation that each

Catholic diocese and eparchy in the

Commonwealth be dedicated to the Blessed Mother.

What prompted the proposal was the

intent for the dioceses and eparchies in

the Commonwealth to observe the 100th

Anniversary of the apparition of the

Blessed Mother at Fatima.

The official dedication will be marked

with a special Mass to be celebrated in

Saint Patrick Cathedral in Harrisburg at

12:00 noon on Wednesday, September 27 by all bishops in

the state.

The second part of the dedication will be an observance in

each diocese and eparchy the weekend of October 14-15.

This means that the Archdiocese of Philadelphia will be

consecrated to Our Lady on the weekend of

October 14-15. More details are coming soon!

LIVING STEWARDSHIP NOW

WHAT DO YOU WANT? WHAT DO YOU NEED?

Seattle resident Alex Martin made a dress. She

washed it frequently, wore it with different accessories,

and hardly anyone noticed that she had it on every day

for a whole year. Martin was protesting

over-consumption and the intensive marketing that

pushes us to buy “stuff.” Most of us aren’t going to stop

shopping, but we could ask ourselves why we focus so

much on outward appearance. Do we give equal attention

to our inner self? In today’s first reading Solomon could

have prayed for more riches, the defeat of his enemies, or

long life. Instead, he asks for a heart that knows right

from wrong in order to fulfill his kingly responsibilities.

God grants him wisdom, and he uses the gift for the good

of all. Perhaps you dream of winning the lottery or

making a fortune. Pray, rather, for the inner gifts you

need to help build the kingdom of God.
