Eucharistic CongressFriday, November 6 – Saturday, November 7
The Diocese of Richmond will convene its first-ever Eucharistic Congress as the culmination of its bicentennial jubilee. A Eucharistic Congress is a large-scale gathering of a local Church—bishop, priests, deacons, religious, and lay people—for the purpose of deepening our understanding and appreciation of the Most Blessed Sacrament. The bicentennial Eucharistic Congress will be conducted virtually with some in-person elements, and will be open to people of all ages. • Mass livestreamed from historic St. Peter’s Church in Richmond • Eucharistic holy hour and procession livestreamed from the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart and conducted in-person at parishes • Keynote speakers • Breakout sessions • Special tracks (Spanish, Vietnamese, children, youth, young adults, and persons with disabilities)The Eucharistic Congress is free. All Saints DayThe weekend of October 31 – November 1 is the Solemnity of All Saints. As the name implies, All Saints Day celebrates all who are in heaven: those who have been officially declared (canonized) and particularly those who have not.
All Souls’ DayMonday, November 2 is the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, better known as All Souls’ Day. As the name implies, on All Souls’ Day the Church intercedes for all the dead. Mass will be celebrated at 12:00 noon and will be livestreamed: https://www.facebook.com/cathedralofthesacredheart/live “From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God. The Church also commends almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance undertaken on behalf of the dead” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 1032).

Calvary Cemetery. We will learn more about praying for the dead. When we come back to church, we will sing "Happy Birthday" to

Family PrayerWe know that our children develop habits from their par-ents and the life of our families. Do our children hear the words of our own prayers as parents? Do they see the gestures made in our prayers for one another? Bless your children as he or she leaves for school or logs on to Zoom for virtual learning by making a sign of the cross on their forehead or stopping with them to say a prayer before the day begins.
This week on our formation site, we will demonstrate mak-ing the sign of the cross and also learning about the Pearl of Great Price. If you have not registered yet for PREK-5th grade faith formation - please register today and receive the password for our formation site.
A Cleansing for Heaven:Why Purgatory Deserves a Better ReputationOn Thursday, November 12 at 6:00 p.m., Father Tony will offer a presentation on purgatory, the Church’s hopeful doctrine that comes into focus during this month. This session will take place in-person in the church and virtually over zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88059411092 “All who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 1030).
NovemberThe consecutive celebration of All Saints Day (November 1) and All Souls’ Day (November 2) presents the theme for this month: our eternal destiny. Traditionally, it is at this time of year that the Church reflects on the “Last Things”: death, judgment, the resurrection of the body, heaven, hell, and purgatory. These topics are featured in the readings and prayers for Mass as the liturgical year comes to a close. Accordingly, the Gospel reading focuses on the end of Jesus’ public ministry. (The account of Christ’s Passion, Death, and Resurrection is proclaimed during Holy Week and Easter.) In Jerusalem, at the end of his public ministry, Jesus speaks about the end of the world and his return in glory (Parousia). This theme segues into Advent—the beginning of the new liturgical year—whose first part focuses on the Second Coming of Christ.

CCM UpdateOctober was a busy month for students involved with Catholic Campus Ministry at VCU. Earlier in the month, we celebrated CCM Spirit Day in honor of St. John Henry Newman's feast day and participated in Step-by-Step for Haiti. Prayer has been at the heart of our ministry this semester through Mass, adoration, holy hours, and the rosary. Students have been able to build community with a variety of in-person and online fellowship opportunities including a bonfire, a game night, and a revised Sunday Supper. On behalf of the students, CCM would like to thank the Cathedral parishioners for their generosity towards our ministry. Please keep the students in your prayers as they begin their final month of classes for the Fall 2020 semester.

Annual Brunswick Stew SaleThe Knights of Columbus will be hosting their annual Brunswick Stew Sale, observing all necessary health precautions. The stew will be prepared outdoors, with all volunteers wearing masks and gloves. A drive-through and walk-up pickup for orders will be arranged on the sidewalk outside the Parish Hall for one hour after all Masses on November 14 and 15. Memorial CandlesDue to logistical issues from COVID restrictions, we are unable to offer our traditional memorial candles this November. We apologize, as we know this is a beautiful and important tradition of our parish. In lieu of a candle, you are invited to attend the holy hour on Novemeber 19 at 6:00 p.m. Parishioners are also encouraged to schedule a Mass to be offered for their deceased loved ones. In this fully illustrated book for children ages 5-12, Ray Ikanga is a young boy whose family fled violence in their home country to come to the United States as refugees.
